Villa Catignano pairs a frescoed seventeenth-century villa and formal Italian garden with the more relaxed accommodation of a linked farmhouse and six cottages. Just outside Siena, it lends itself to several days together: getting ready in the villa, gathering among the lemon trees and statues, and sitting down to dinner in the courtyard.

The 2028 four-night offer is €25,468 for the whole property, plus a €2,500 wedding-day location fee, giving an accommodation-and-location subtotal of €27,968 before catering, production and any additional tax or charges. A split four-night/three-night stay brings that subtotal to €23,955. The estate’s 27 accommodation units have occupancy ranges totaling 70–86 guests. For the wedding itself, the courtyard seats up to 180 for dinner, while Tinaia, the principal indoor alternative, seats up to 100. That gap is the main consideration for a larger guest list.

The accommodation range depends on the mix of adults, children and sleeping arrangements within the apartments and cottages. It is a room-allocation starting point, rather than 86 interchangeable hotel beds.

Catignano’s value lies in using the accommodation. The €27,968 four-night rental-and-wedding-location subtotal buys a place for a substantial part of a medium-sized wedding to stay together, not just a backdrop for one evening. Because the accommodation price is fixed, a group that fills much of the estate makes better use of that spending than a small wedding leaving most apartments empty. Food, service and the celebration itself remain separate costs.

The experience is more relaxed country house than polished resort. Guests can occupy apartments and cottages, meet for breakfast, spend time by the pool and wander between different parts of the estate. The historic villa supplies the more formal interiors, while the gardens and courtyard do much of the visual work outside. That contrast is part of the appeal: the wedding can feel elegant without requiring every hour of the weekend to be formal.

Our preferred guest count is around 60–100. Most of the group can stay on the estate, depending on room assignments, and dinner remains below Tinaia’s 100-seat indoor limit. Around 80 feels particularly sensible: large enough to use the property well, with more flexibility indoors than a wedding at the room’s maximum.

The main drawback is the jump from a medium-sized wedding to a large one. At 150–180 guests, the courtyard still works for dinner, but many guests need other accommodation and the reception needs a separately planned covered alternative. That changes both the cost and the ease of the weekend. Catignano is a stronger choice for a guest list that works comfortably indoors than for one chosen around the largest possible outdoor layout.

The other tradeoff is service. Apartments and cottages give guests independence, but meals, room servicing and wedding coordination need more individual planning than at a full-service hotel. The split-stay option is a useful saving when only the closest group needs the extra night; four nights throughout is simpler when everyone wants the same itinerary.

Bottom line: We would shortlist Catignano for a multi-day celebration with a garden ceremony, courtyard dinner and indoor party, especially when staying together matters as much as the wedding day. It is less suited to a one-night event, a fully bundled hotel package or a large wedding that must fit in one indoor reception room.

The 2028 rental structure

The 2028 wedding offer has three accommodation arrangements. These are stay totals, not nightly rates, and the price does not fall when fewer guests attend. Four nights is the normal requirement; a full three-night stay is an exception available outside July and August. The wedding-day fee below is linked to booking the accommodation.

The split arrangement also applies in July and August. For a weekend wedding, one practical version is Thursday to Monday in the main villa and Friday to Monday in the other accommodation, aligning with the requested Monday departure. This gives the couple and a smaller family group an extra evening without paying for a fourth night in every building. The entire estate is not reserved for the same four-night period under that arrangement.

In 2028, moving from the split stay to four nights everywhere costs €4,013 more. Moving from the exceptional three-night stay to the split arrangement costs €2,355 more. Those are differences between packages, not separately bookable nightly rates.

The wedding-day fee is additional

The accommodation-linked wedding-day fee is €2,500 for the Tinaia Hall, Italian garden and courtyard arrangement. It is one wedding-day location charge, not €2,500 for each named space. Catering, drinks, furniture, flowers and entertainment sit outside it.

The 2028 rental increases over the equivalent 2027 arrangements are €1,212, €1,021 and €908 respectively. The larger financial choices are still the length of stay, the wedding design and the number of hosted meals, rather than this year-to-year difference.

What is included, and what costs extra

The whole-property arrangement brings together the main-villa accommodation, Fattoria apartments and six cottages, with exclusive use under the agreed stay pattern. Many units have kitchens or kitchenettes, so the estate can work well for families and guests who prefer more independence than a conventional hotel room allows. The pool adds a natural focus for downtime during its operating season.

Breakfast and other resident meals cost extra, as do wedding catering, bar service, planning, flowers, rentals, lighting, sound, photography, music licensing and transport. Daily housekeeping, linen changes during the stay and event cleaning should be itemized in the agreement, with any associated charges, so the group knows what service to expect.

Breakfast can be arranged in the villa’s living rooms for a 90-minute service. It is optional, but it is a group booking rather than an individual guest add-on: once selected, it must cover all guests, with a minimum of 30. Book before February 1 of the year of the stay, and agree whether the required headcount covers residents or the wider wedding group.

Wedding food and drink are modeled at €225–€350 per guest, covering the aperitivo, dinner, dessert or cake, wine, a defined bar period and service. The welcome dinner is €65–€100 per guest and the farewell meal €50–€80. These are planning allowances, not Catignano menus.

The three other breakfasts use 70 residents at €20–€24 per person per morning, a simple-breakfast allowance with headroom above the indicated 2028 Italian-breakfast calculation. The farewell meal replaces breakfast on one of the four mornings. In the sample Thursday-to-Monday itinerary, that means breakfast on Friday, Saturday and Monday, plus Sunday’s farewell brunch. A separate breakfast before a farewell lunch would be an additional meal. The €0 optional-room allowances apply when those rooms are not used.

Excluded: any VAT added to the stated venue or supplier figures, tourist tax, off-property guest rooms, airport transfers, flights, attire, rings, honeymoon costs, unquoted mandatory service charges and any substantial marquee or covered-structure installation. Additional everyday meals and drinks beyond those named in the model are also excluded.

The low end assumes a restrained design and modest entertainment, not a large live band or elaborate production. Caterer-supplied tables, linens or tableware should be credited against the rentals allowance rather than purchased twice. Moving only the rental to the 2028 split-stay arrangement reduces the calculated 80-person model by €4,013, to €94,795–€152,259; the actual breakfast and arrival plans would then also change.

Catignano has room for a larger dinner outdoors than indoors: 180 in the courtyard and 100 seated in Tinaia. Tinaia can also hold 120 for dancing, in a separate configuration. The room choice therefore matters as much as the overall guest count.

Tinaia’s dinner and dancing capacities describe different uses of the room. Grey Hall provides another setting for the day, with the advantage of keeping drinks separate from a prepared dinner room.

How we would use the estate

A natural sequence is a garden ceremony, drinks among the formal planting, dinner in the courtyard, then an indoor party in Tinaia or Grey Hall. The garden’s stone steps and statues give the ceremony an existing sense of arrival, while the courtyard allows dinner to feel like its own occasion rather than a continuation in the same space.

We would preserve that change of scene rather than overdecorate every corner. Spend on a good table plan, comfortable chairs and lighting that makes the courtyard and walking routes feel inviting after dark. A dinner room that is attractive in daylight also needs a thoughtful evening lighting scheme.

For a wedding of up to 100, Tinaia is the principal indoor dinner option. Grey Hall can take the covered drinks portion under the rain concession, helping avoid the problem of trying to serve cocktails in a room already set with dinner tables. The frescoed sitting room is another option for €700 when used, but it is not available after dinner.

The indoor ceremony needs its own room and seated layout for your guest list; the intimate chapel is not a like-for-like substitute for the garden. Keeping drinks in Grey Hall allows Tinaia to remain set for dinner. When Tinaia also hosts the party, the plan should leave somewhere for guests to gather while tables are moved. At the 100-seat limit, that dinner-to-dancing changeover is especially important.

The additional rain rooms can be selected on the wedding day, subject to the agreed decision deadline. The ceremony, dinner and party layouts should already be planned, so the choice is between two workable versions of the day rather than a last-minute redesign.

Larger weddings need a different covered plan

Above 100 seated guests, the couple is responsible for arranging a marquee solution. Its approved location, capacity and cost should be settled before committing to that guest count. Above 120, the party also needs an alternative to putting everyone into Tinaia. A 180-person courtyard wedding is therefore a different undertaking from the 60–100-person budget scenarios in this guide.

Splitting dinner between Tinaia and Grey Hall may suit some couples, but it changes the experience. Guests have different views of speeches and separate service areas, while the second room may no longer be available for drinks or the afterparty. Their capacities should not be added together as though they were one reception room.

Rain also changes the walk between the gardens and the buildings. The plan needs sheltered gathering space and manageable routes, not just enough dinner chairs. We would favor a prepared indoor reception over delaying the evening in the hope that the courtyard becomes usable.

Understanding the 70–86-person inventory

The accommodation consists of eight main-villa units, 13 Fattoria apartments and studios, and six cottages. Their occupancy ranges total 70–86 guests across 27 units. A unit may contain more than one bedroom, and the upper occupancy options do not establish how many permanent beds are available. The practical capacity depends on your households, shared bathrooms and willingness to use the larger sleeping configurations.

La Maestà is the designated apartment for the couple. Its frescoed interiors and garden views make it a natural getting-ready base. Elsewhere, the mix includes two-bedroom apartments and smaller studios, often with a living space and kitchen or kitchenette. This is useful for families and groups of friends, but room allocation is more individual than distributing hotel room keys.

Our approach would be to allocate the couple, immediate family and wedding party first, then match the remaining apartments to actual households. 

Comfort, access and the pool

For a July or August stay, room cooling deserves as much attention as the bed plan. Air conditioning should not be assumed in the main villa, so allocate heat-sensitive guests around the cooling arrangements confirmed for their specific rooms.

The Italian garden has stone stairs, and several apartments are on upper floors. For guests with limited mobility, match the bedroom and bathroom to a manageable route through the ceremony, dinner and party spaces. Accessibility needs to work across that whole route.

The pool normally operates from early May to mid-October, depending on weather. It is warmed by the sun rather than mechanically heated, so a spring or autumn pool afternoon will not feel like a heated-resort-pool experience. Wi-Fi is identified in common outdoor areas, and there is a coin-operated laundry. These are useful details for guests staying several nights.

For overflow accommodation, we would use one nearby countryside hotel or a concentrated Siena base rather than scatter guests across numerous unrelated rentals. Siena also works well for people extending their trip, because they can spend their free time in town instead of depending on a car for every meal.

Borgo Scopeto Wine & Country Relais

The nearby countryside choice for guests who want a more serviced stay, with hotel rooms, suites and villas, restaurants and wellness facilities. It suits parents or guests who value hotel amenities while staying in the same general Chianti landscape. Allow roughly 10–20 minutes by car to Catignano as a planning estimate.

Villa Ermellina Siena, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel

A hotel option on Siena’s northern side, with on-site parking and a more conventional hotel operation. It is worth assessing for a coordinated room block, particularly when transport simplicity matters more than staying in the middle of the medieval streets. Allow roughly 20–30 minutes to the venue.

Hotel Athena, Siena

A useful choice for guests who want to stay inside Siena’s walls and walk to its historic sights. The hotel has parking, but the wedding transport company should set the pickup location around the actual vehicle rather than assume a large coach can collect at the front door. Allow roughly 25–35 minutes to Catignano.

Driving times are RoamRecs planning allowances. For the return journey, an earlier shuttle and a final departure after the indoor party give guests more flexibility than a single late-night pickup.

Food, drinks and supplier flexibility

Food, drinks and wedding production are arranged separately from the estate rental. Catignano can introduce caterers, florists, musicians, lighting teams and suppliers for a welcome barbecue or pizza evening. A planner is recommended; the booking information does not make one compulsory.

We would budget for professional planning and on-site coordination. Someone needs to manage the room list, catering, event timings and any weather changes on the couple’s behalf, while the venue team looks after the property.

For a meaningful catering comparison, price the whole service: aperitivo, seated dinner, cake or dessert, wine, bar hours, staff and cleanup. The caterer and venue should settle kitchen use and equipment, while any wine requirements, corkage, required suppliers or venue service fees belong in the quote. Those details can change the value of an apparently lower per-person price.

2 a.m. music, 2:30 a.m. room closure

With the entire property rented exclusively, music may continue in the wedding room until 2 a.m., followed by room closure at 2:30 a.m.. A one-hour music extension costs €200, available only under exclusive use, and the venue needs the party’s ending time two weeks in advance. These are indoor-party hours; an outdoor music schedule needs separate agreement.

Build the last dance around the music cutoff, with the remaining half-hour for departures. An extension needs an agreed room-closing time as well as a new music finish. Other indoor lunches or dinners follow the separate 11 p.m. closing rule.

A symbolic ceremony in the gardens

For many couples, this is the simplest fit. The garden provides the setting and the couple handles the legal marriage separately, allowing the ceremony itself to focus on their vows and guests. The statues, stone steps and planting give it character without needing a large constructed backdrop.

The private chapel

The private chapel is an intimate option for Anglican or Protestant ceremonies, arranged with the appropriate officiant. That offering does not establish permission for a Catholic wedding, and the legal recognition of a religious ceremony needs separate attention.

A legally binding civil ceremony

Siena’s municipal rooms offer a practical setting for an off-site legal ceremony before returning to Catignano. Sala del Concistoro and Palazzo Patrizi each hold 50 people, while Loggia dei Nove holds 80. A smaller legal ceremony followed by the full celebration at the estate can work well when the wedding guest list exceeds those limits.

An on-site legal civil ceremony should only enter the plan once Villa Catignano and the Comune di Castelnuovo Berardenga confirm an authorized space and arrangements for the date. Symbolic garden ceremonies do not establish that legal status. The relevant municipal or religious office should set the paperwork and interpretation requirements for the couple’s circumstances.

Villa Catignano is about 8 km northeast of Siena, approached through the Ponte a Bozzone area. It is close enough for a city-based guest stay while still feeling rural. Send guests the full street address and the estate’s map pin for the final approach.

Florence is the first airport we would compare for convenience, with Pisa a useful alternative when its flight schedule works better. The estate can help arrange transfers.

Guests traveling through Florence can also use the 131R bus connection to Siena, followed by a pre-arranged car or shuttle to the property. For rail arrivals, Siena is the practical final collection point. Public transport gets guests to the area; it does not replace the final transfer to the estate.

Siena’s historic center has restricted vehicle access, so choose hotel pickup points with the transport company. The vehicle also needs to suit Catignano’s final approach and turning space. This is worth settling with the operator before reserving a fleet of full-size coaches.

Guests do not need rental cars for a well-organized wedding weekend with transfers and meals planned. Cars are more useful for those exploring independently or stocking their apartment. We would prioritize a reliable shared transport plan over asking guests to navigate country roads after the party.

Our first choices are late May, June and September. June offers a strong balance of warmth and lower average rainfall for the gardens and courtyard, while May and September generally bring more comfortable daytime temperatures.

These are Siena’s 1991–2020 climate averages, not a forecast for the estate. Midsummer is hotter and generally drier; September and October carry more rain. A late-afternoon ceremony, shade and water matter in July and August. Cooler-season weddings should be designed to feel good indoors from the outset.

Date selection also affects the stay pattern: the exceptional three-night rental is excluded in July and August. The quoted 2028 rental options have no separate seasonal breakdown, so October does not carry an automatic saving over June for the same stay.

The standard four-night arrangement naturally suits a Thursday-to-Monday stay. We would keep the first evening informal, hold the welcome gathering on Friday, marry on Saturday, and leave Sunday for a slower farewell meal and time together. This is a proposed itinerary, not an included events package.

Ordinary pool time fits naturally into the stay during the pool season, while a catered pool event needs its own arrangements.

Before paying a deposit, settle the stay pattern, the full price and a wet-weather plan you would be happy to use. Those decisions shape the wedding more than the courtyard’s maximum capacity.
