Pike Place Market is really a stack of different meals: tiny counters in the Main Arcade, candlelit rooms below street level, French and Italian dining along Post Alley, and seafood and beer down on Western Avenue. What you should eat depends on whether you've got twenty minutes or a whole evening.
For one proper sit-down meal, start with Matt's in the Market. Sushi Kashiba is the splurge, The Pink Door is the date night, Cafe Campagne is brunch and Place Pigalle is the quiet seafood dinner with a view. At the counters, we'd make time for Oriental Mart, Market Grill, Pasta Casalinga and Maíz. Most counters wrap up by late afternoon, so plan dinner around a restaurant.

Sit-Down Dinners at Pike Place Market
These are the rooms to plan a meal around. Most are tucked above, below or behind the arcades, so leave a few extra minutes to find the door. Sushi Kashiba gets a fuller write-up in our best sushi in Seattle guide, and Maximilien and Place Pigalle are the Market's entries in our Seattle waterfront restaurants guide. Radiator Whiskey's Monday deal is in our Seattle happy hours guide.

Matt's in the Market
94 Pike St #32, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
The dining room looks across the neon clock toward Elliott Bay, and the kitchen leans on what's sold downstairs. Lunch is the best way in: get the fried catfish sandwich and the house chips with hot bacon and caramelized onion dip. Dinner goes further into seasonal seafood and Northwest cooking. Details: 94 Pike St, Suite 32, top floor of the Corner Market, with an elevator. Book on OpenTable and ask for a window, but don't count on one. Lunch daily, dinner Monday through Saturday.

Sushi Kashiba
86 Pine St Ste 1, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
Counter seats are the prize here: a formal run of pristine fish from the Pacific Northwest, Japan and beyond for about $190 a person. The dining room is no consolation, though. It has set menus and a la carte, and it's the better call if your group wants cooked dishes like the black cod kasuzuke alongside the sushi. Details: 86 Pine St, Suite 1. Counter seatings are at 5, 7 and 9 p.m. A few seats go on OpenTable, and the rest are first come, first served. Open from 5 p.m., closed Tuesday. The counter can't do vegetarian meals.

The Pink Door
1919 Post Alley, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
The room, the entertainment and the food all compete for your attention, with jazz, cabaret or aerial performance depending on the night. Get the spinach lasagna and fill out the table with pasta and seafood. In summer, the patio looks across the water. It's polished, but playful enough for a birthday or a first night in town. Details: 1919 Post Alley. Reservations open 90 days out, and the 16 bar stools plus some tables are held for walk-ins. Open Tuesday through Saturday. Check the schedule if a particular show matters to you.

Cafe Campagne
1600 Post Alley, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
A classic Parisian cafe on Post Alley, and the place for a slow morning or midday meal. Start with the quiche, especially the Dungeness crab version when it's on. French onion soup, oeufs en meurette, croques and frites can stretch brunch well into the afternoon. Dinner is quieter, built around roast chicken and seafood. Details: 1600 Post Alley. Book on OpenTable, or come for a weekday lunch to dodge the busiest stretch. Open daily for daytime food and dinner.

Place Pigalle
Behind where they throw the fish!, 81 Pike St, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
It's hidden behind the fish-throwing, and once you're inside, the Market drops away. Water views, attentive service and a seafood-first menu make it a good long lunch, a calm date or dinner with parents. Build the meal around the steamed mussels, saffron clam chowder or Northwest bouillabaisse. Details: 81 Pike St, behind Pike Place Fish and not visible from First Avenue. Reservations recommended, and ask for a window. Open daily for lunch and dinner.

Le Pichet
1933 1st Ave, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
French food without a production. The 32-seat room is narrow, warm and comfortably worn-in, with a bar that works for coffee, wine, lunch or a solo dinner. Terrines, salads and frites are all good, but the slow-roasted chicken for two is the reason to plan ahead. It's just outside the busiest stretch, which helps after an hour of crowds. Details: 1933 1st Ave. Dinner reservations are by phone, and daytime is mostly walk-in. Open daily from 10 a.m.

Maximilien
81A Pike St, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
The Market's classic French view room, with candlelight and picture windows on Elliott Bay and the Olympics. The menu stays close to what that setting calls for: onion soup, oysters, mussels, duck confit, steak frites and seared fish. It's more traditionally romantic than Place Pigalle and more formal than Le Pichet, so it suits anniversaries and proposals. Details: 81A Pike St. Book on Resy and time it for sunset, but don't count on a window. Dinner daily from 4 p.m., lunch Friday through Sunday.

IL Bistro
93 Pike St A, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
Low light, brick and dark wood make this room below the Market feel more like a Tuscan grotto than a tourist stop. The menu is traditional and direct: cioppino, rigatoni Bolognese, steak, antipasti and rich desserts. Go after the stalls close, then stay for a nightcap in the lounge, which keeps going later than most Market restaurants. Details: 93A Pike St. Book online. Dinner from 5 p.m.

Radiator Whiskey
94 Pike St #30, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
The dark, loud counterpoint to Matt's next door. The bar takes whiskey seriously, the kitchen leans toward smoked and braised meat, and the arched windows keep you connected to the Market. For two, take bar seats and order selectively. For a group, the whole smoked pig's head or Beast Feast turns dinner into an event. Details: 94 Pike St, Suite 30, top floor of the Corner Market. 21+. Reservations recommended, and the pig's head needs a week's notice. Monday through Saturday from 3 p.m.

Lonely Siren
1501 Pike Pl Level 2 #200, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
Down two flights of stairs, a glassy sunroom and lived-in dining room seem a long way from the crowds. Come for cocktails and Portuguese-inspired small plates like grilled sardines, salt cod fritters and potatoes. Treat it as a drinks night with a few plates to share, not a big dinner. Details: 1501 Pike Pl, Suite 200. Mostly walk-ins, with a limited number of reservations. Opens at 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon Friday through Sunday, until midnight. Call ahead if anyone in your group is under 21.

The Alibi Room
85 Pike St #410, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
The escape hatch for anyone who needs a dark booth, a pizza and a drink after the daytime Market has wound down. Its Gum Wall entrance is easy to miss, and the kitchen runs later than nearly anything nearby. Save it for the unplanned late dinner. Details: 85 Pike St, Suite 410. Walk-ins. Open daily until 2 a.m., and it turns 21+ later in the evening.

Casual Sit-Down Meals at Pike Place Market
You want a chair, a view or a beer, but you don't want to plan the day around a reservation. Most of these wind down earlier than you'd expect, so check the hours before counting on dinner. Old Stove is also in our Seattle breweries guide and takes bigger bookings, covered in our bars for large groups guide.

Old Stove Brewing
1901 Western Ave, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
The easy choice when a mixed group wants space, beer, food and a view without negotiating a formal dining room. The western wall opens toward Elliott Bay, the Olympics and the ferries, and the beer is brewed on site. The menu aims for broad appeal, which is why it works so well for families and groups that can't agree on anything. Details: 1901 Western Ave, Suite A, in the MarketFront. Mostly walk-ins, with an event form for larger groups. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and it fills up by late afternoon.

Mr. Fish
2010 Western Ave, Seattle, WA 98121, USA
Mr. Fish is for when you want fried seafood and a chair. It's a casual, tourist-friendly room with a patio at the north end of the Market, and the menu runs from fish and chips to chowder, oysters and seafood sandwiches. Order the fried cod and don't expect more than a good, easy lunch. Details: 2010 Western Ave. OpenTable and walk-ins. Lunch daily from 11:30 a.m., and dinner until 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Lowell's
1519 Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
Three floors of windows and several ways to use them. The first and third floors are counter service, while the second has table service, a bar and a small set of market-view booths. Breakfast is the strongest reason to come, and the crab Benedict and Bloody Marys are the classic order. The food's straightforward, and the view and easy format do the rest. Details: 1519 Pike Pl. No reservations. Second-floor table service is limited, and bar and lounge seats are 21+. Order downstairs and head up before the lunch rush. Open daily until about 4 p.m.

The Athenian
Next to Pure Food Fish Market, 1517 Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
It's been serving the Market since 1909, and it still looks out across Puget Sound from nearly every table. Come for the history, a beer, breakfast or a straightforward seafood plate, not a polished modern dinner. The room's a big part of the attraction, so keep the order simple and take the first good window. Details: 1517 Pike Pl, in the Main Arcade. Walk-ins. Closed Wednesday, and hours vary by day.

Emmett Watson's Oyster Bar
1916 Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
Seattle's first dedicated oyster bar is still a cozy, no-frills spot for raw oysters and beer, with a small patio out back. Order the oysters first, then add fish and chips if the stop turns into lunch. It's less polished than the destination seafood restaurants and more comfortable because of it. Details: 1916 Pike Pl, in the Soames-Dunn Building near Seattle Dumpling Co. Walk-ins. Closed Tuesday.
Market Counters at Pike Place Market
This is where the Market's best cheap lunches are. Go early, because many of these close by late afternoon and some sell out before that.

Oriental Mart
1506 Pike Pl #509, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
A grocery store with an 18-seat counter in the back and one of the best meals in the Market. There's no fixed menu, so you might get pancit, adobo, longanisa or salmon collar sinigang. Ask what's good, accept that a dish may be gone and order enough rice for the sauces. It's a James Beard America's Classics winner for good reason. Details: 1506 Pike Pl, in the Corner Market building across from the Main Arcade. Order through the grocery counter. Lunch only from 11 a.m. until about 3 p.m., so come early.

Market Grill
1509 Pike Pl #3, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
A few counter seats and a small grill, right in the flow of the arcade. Wild salmon goes on the heat, then onto grilled bread with rosemary mayonnaise and vegetables. It's expensive for a sandwich and still worth ordering. If there are two of you, split one with a cup of the herby clam chowder. Details: 1509 Pike Pl, Stall 3. Seats are limited and there are no reservations. Open daily until 5 p.m., 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Pasta Casalinga
93 Pike St #201, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
Hidden above the atrium, this counter is worth treating as a destination. The menu changes often and is organized around the ocean, farm and garden, with fresh pasta shapes matched to seasonal seafood, meat and vegetables. Lasagna and a simple tomato pasta round it out. The vegetable bowl is as thoughtful as the others. Details: 93 Pike St, Suite 201. Counter service. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., and popular dishes can sell out.

Maíz
1914 Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
Maíz starts with the corn. The team nixtamalizes and grinds heritage corn into masa, then turns it into tacos, tlacoyos, huaraches, gorditas, sopes and tamales. A sope, tlacoyo or huarache shows off the masa better than a rushed taco order, and it's a good stop for vegetarian or gluten-conscious diners. Details: 1914 Pike Pl, next to the First Starbucks. Counter service. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Rubys
Pike Place Market, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
Chef Alex Jackson's mostly vegetarian cafe treats vegetables as the point, with no fake meat in sight. Get the mushroom melt, add the roasted carrots with tahini or the kimchi-cheddar potatoes, and save room for the oversized chocolate chip cookie. The lower-level room is calm, has views toward the water and is a real break from the arcade. Details: 1501 Pike Pl, Suite 300, lower level. Walk-ins. Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Pike Place Chowder
1530 Post Alley, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
Famous enough to create its own traffic problem, but the New England clam chowder earns a place on a first visit. It's creamy and rich and built for a cold Seattle afternoon, especially in a sourdough bread bowl. The line adds nothing, so order ahead online and collect from the back-kitchen pickup. Details: 1530 Post Alley. Very limited seating, with public seating nearby. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Jack's Fish Spot
1514 Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
A fish market and seafood bar at the same time, with the counter supplying the kitchen. It turns out fish and chips, grilled salmon, chowder, cioppino, raw oysters and steamed Dungeness crab. Go when freshness matters more than a polished room, or when your group can't agree between fried, grilled and raw. Details: 1514 Pike Pl, in the Sanitary Market. The cooked seafood bar keeps shorter hours than the fish counter, so arrive before late afternoon.

Seattle Dumpling Co.
1916 Pike Pl #14, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
A small counter near the First Starbucks with a few seats and a patio out back. The wrappers are the reason to focus on dumplings, with fillings like pork and fennel, pork and shrimp, chive and shrimp, and beef and onion. Pick two, and add sesame noodles only for a bigger meal. Details: 1916 Pike Pl, Suite 14. Counter service. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Tuesday.

Riccio's Sausage Co.
1511 Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
A Main Arcade Italian sandwich counter that opened in the last year and already belongs on this list. House-made Calabrian and Italian sausages come with peppers, onions, potatoes, broccoli rabe or cheese, and cold sandwiches arrive on house focaccia. Split the Matteuccio or Spezzanese with a mortadella focaccia, and add marinated vegetables to cut the richness. Details: 1511 Pike Pl. Counter service with some tables. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

DeLaurenti Food & Wine
1435 1st Ave, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
An Italian grocery first and a lunch counter second, in the Market since 1946. A sandwich from the front case is the easy move, but the better one is building your own lunch from cheese, salami, bread and olives. Add a cannoli and you've got a picnic or a hotel-room spread. Details: 1435 1st Ave. Limited cafe seating, so don't plan on a sit-down meal. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Baiana
1505 Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
The Market's one Bahian Brazilian counter, with coconut milk, red palm oil, seafood, okra and cassava in bowls like moqueca, feijoada and caruru. Think of it as a change of pace after chowder and salmon, not a must-stop. Don't leave without the tapioca doughnuts and a little of the green sauce. Details: 1505 Pike Pl, steps from Pike Place Fish. Counter service. Open daily until 5 p.m., 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Beecher's Handmade Cheese
1600 Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
The food and the production share a glass-walled room, so you can watch curds become cheese while the cafe turns Flagship into grilled cheese, soup and very rich mac and cheese. A small mac is plenty for a snack crawl, and a grilled cheese with tomato soup makes it lunch. The line looks worse than it is. Details: 1600 Pike Pl. Counter service. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Three Girls Bakery
1514 Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
The tiny counter behind this old bakery is one of the Market's most charming practical lunches. Soups change daily, sandwiches are made to order and the long-running meatloaf sandwich is the one to get. Take a stool and add the day's soup if the weather calls for it. Details: 1514 Pike Pl, in the Sanitary Market. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Bakeries and Sweets at Pike Place Market
Good for breakfast, a snack between stops or the last bite of a food crawl. The best of these are at their best early. For coffee to go with them, our Seattle coffee shops guide starts a few blocks away at Monorail Espresso.

Piroshky Piroshky
1908 Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
It's not hidden, but popularity doesn't make it a mistake. The bakery fills hand-held pastries with beef and cheese, smoked salmon pate, potato and mushroom, cinnamon, chocolate and other rotating combinations. Go savory if you're on a food crawl, since one can anchor several smaller bites. Details: 1908 Pike Pl. Order a timed pickup if the line reaches the corner, because waits build before and during lunch. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Mee Sum Pastry
1526 Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
Trays hold shu mai, potstickers, skewers, curry buns and sweet pastries, but the barbecue pork hom bow is the first order: soft, slightly sweet dough around savory pork. Add a curry beef bun and a dumpling for contrast. A mixed box travels well if a few of you are sharing. Details: 1526 Pike Pl. Takeout only, and the line moves quickly. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Le Panier
1902 Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
The Market's bakery for classic French pastry. Croissants, pain au chocolat, brioche, macarons, tarts and baguettes fill the cases, with enough savory options to turn coffee and pastry into breakfast. Arrive before 9 a.m. for the best selection, and pick up a baguette for later. Details: 1902 Pike Pl. Seating is limited. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Crumpet Shop
1503 1st Ave, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
Warm crumpets come with combinations that run from butter and preserves to egg, ham, cheese and pesto. It's best before the Market fills, when tea and a savory crumpet can start the day without slowing it down. Order one savory and one sweet to share. Details: 1503 1st Ave. Counter service. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hellenika Cultured Creamery
1920a Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
Dense, tangy cultured gelato that lands somewhere between yogurt and ice cream, in rotating flavors tied to the Market and the season. It's the cold, bright finish a savory food crawl needs. Taste before you choose, and pair a fruit flavor with a richer one. Details: 1920A Pike Pl. Open daily from 10:30 a.m., and lines build in warm weather.

Daily Dozen Doughnut Co.
93 Pike St, Seattle, WA 98101, USA
These mini doughnuts are at their best when they're almost too hot to hold. Cinnamon sugar is the classic and the one to get, and the small size makes a bag easy to share without derailing the rest of the day. Details: 93 Pike St, in the Economy Market near DeLaurenti. Open daily until 5 p.m., 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Pufftown Bakehouse
1928 Pike Pl, Seattle, WA 98121, USA
A small, limited-hours bakery with excellent croissants, filled knots and playful savory pastries. The best items can disappear well before noon, so treat it as a planned morning stop. Preorder if you can, or arrive near opening and take whatever just came out warm. Details: 1928 Pike Pl. Tuesday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to noon, and it can end early after a sellout.
