There's a particular kind of optimism involved in buying a Christmas tree in New York: you find the perfect one, picture it covered in lights, and then remember the staircase. The best place to buy yours depends on which part of that process matters most. Some sellers make choosing a tree a proper December ritual. Others make the whole thing easy by bringing it upstairs, putting it in a stand, and leaving you to decorate.

This guide covers the familiar names like Greg's Trees and SoHo Trees, smaller neighborhood stands, garden centers worth a longer trip, and the budget chains to price-check when you want to keep the bill down. It's about real, cut trees, with one good option for anyone who wants to compare artificial trees in person.

Most NYC stands open Thanksgiving weekend. Four sellers (Tree Riders, Foley Firs, NYC Trees, and Queens County Farm) have already posted 2026 dates, and everything else below is last season's lineup until sellers update. We'll refresh this guide in late November; until then, check the seller's site before making a special trip.

Cheaper Christmas trees in NYC: Home Depot, Lowe's, and Whole Foods

If you can carry the tree home yourself and are comfortable choosing from that day's stock, the chains are a sensible first price check. None has confirmed fresh-tree stock for 2026 yet, so call the branch before traveling, and include the stand and the trip home in both totals before deciding a chain beats the stand around the corner.

Budget chains to price-check

Home Depot (Bronx Terminal)

600 Exterior St, Bronx, NY 10451, USA

Home Depot's Bronx Terminal garden center, the most consistent value suggestion in neighborhood discussions if you can collect the tree yourself. Fresh-tree stock not yet confirmed for 2026; call the branch before traveling, and budget for a stand and transport.

Lowe's (Gowanus)

Lowe's (Gowanus)

118 2nd Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11215, USA

Second Avenue store that comes up alongside Home Depot and Whole Foods in Park Slope and Gowanus discussions about keeping the cost down. Fresh-tree stock not yet confirmed for 2026. Add the stand and the trip home before comparing with a nearby stand.

Selected Whole Foods stores also bring in trees once the season starts. Last December, ABC7 found seven- to 8.5-foot trees at Whole Foods for about $90, well under the $175 to $240 quoted at the specialist stands in the price table below. The tradeoff is that selection, stock, and help with unwrapping or cutting the trunk vary by store. Ask whether you can see the tree opened up and whether staff will give the trunk a fresh cut.

The Bronx doesn't have a specialist stand we could verify for 2026. Bronx readers have the Home Depot at Bronx Terminal as a price check, and NYC Trees and Tree Riders both deliver to the borough.

How to compare Christmas tree delivery in NYC

The number that matters is the price for a tree of the height you need, in your apartment, with the services you actually want. A delivery charge alone doesn't tell you whether someone will carry it upstairs or leave it standing in a stand.

SellerWhat the online price includesWhat to price separately
Tree Riders NYCDelivery, setup, and stand; no stair-carrying surchargeTax, decorations, removal
NYC TreesLocal delivery, installation, stand, and skirtStaten Island delivery fee, lighting, decorating, removal, COI ($40)
SoHo TreesStand, delivery, and installation on online ordersDecorating; retail-stand terms differ
Greenpoint TreesTree only, with selectable extrasSetup, stand, and lights are separate add-ons
NYC Tree LadyFree Manhattan delivery on the listed FraserStand, decorating, $50 delivery to Brooklyn, Queens, or the Bronx

If your building requires a certificate of insurance, sort it out before delivery day. Tree Riders supplies one free; NYC Trees charges $40 and asks for two business days. Tell the seller about stairs, elevators, or delivery-hour restrictions when you order.

How much does a Christmas tree cost in NYC?

There's no single fair price. Height matters, but so do species, shape, seller, delivery, and whether a stand and setup come with it. Only the Tree Riders figure below is a 2026 price; the rest are from ABC7's December 2025 reporting and are context, not quotes.

SellerSeasonTree and priceWhat's included
Tree Riders NYC2026Six-foot Fraser, $239 plus taxDelivery, setup, and stand
Whole Foods2025Seven- to 8.5-foot trees, about $90Tree only
Urban Garden Center2025Seven-foot Fraser, $175Ask about stand and delivery
SoHo Trees2025Seven-foot Fraser, about $200Stand included in the quote

Set a budget for the whole purchase before you fall for the biggest tree on the lot. If it's going in a corner, you care more about the side facing the room than perfect symmetry. If you already own a good stand, ask how much of the quote is paying for one you don't need.

Choosing a Christmas tree for a New York apartment

Measure the width, not just the height. Floor to ceiling, minus the stand and your topper, is the easy part. Also measure the space the branches can take up. A tree can clear the ceiling and still block the path from the sofa to the kitchen. For a tight room, a narrow tree or a tabletop fir usually beats a short, very broad one. Tell the seller your maximum width when ordering delivery, and ask whether the advertised height includes the stand.

Pick the variety for the way you decorate. Fraser fir has strong, upward-turning branches and holds its needles well, which makes it the safe all-rounder, especially for heavier ornaments. Balsam has the classic shape and the strongest Christmas-tree smell. Noble fir has stiff branches for heavy ornaments. Nordmann fir has dark, glossy needles, sturdy layered branches, and almost no scent, which some people prefer. Whatever the species, ask to see the tree opened up, check it from a few angles, and look for flexible outer branches and needles that don't come away in your hand.

Plan the trip home before you buy. If you're carrying it, choose a size you can get through the building and ask the seller to wrap it. If you're using a car service, confirm the driver will take a tree before you depend on that ride. For a tall tree or a bad staircase, seller delivery is the part of the purchase that makes the most difference.

Get it into water fast. Ask for a fresh half-inch cut off the base, then get the tree into a stand that fits the trunk and holds plenty of water. Check the level daily and keep it away from radiators. Plain tap water is fine; the National Christmas Tree Association doesn't recommend sugar, bleach, or other additives.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to buy a Christmas tree in NYC?
Late November and early December give you the most choice of shape and size. Shopping later can work if you're flexible, but a lower price is never guaranteed and small stands sell out. For a very tall tree, contact the seller early; Foley Firs already takes 2026 preorders for trees nine feet and up.
Do you need a car to buy a Christmas tree in NYC?
No. A neighborhood stand is the easiest route for a manageable tree, and several specialists deliver and set up. A car becomes useful for destination shopping at Brooklyn Terminal Market or the garden centers in eastern Queens and Staten Island. Count transport in the comparison before deciding a distant tree is cheaper.
Which NYC Christmas tree sellers deliver and set up?
Tree Riders NYC, NYC Trees, and SoHo Trees include delivery and installation with online orders. NYC Tree Lady, Greenpoint Trees, New York State of Pine, AA Christmas Trees, and J.G. Brands deliver with setup as an add-on or by arrangement. The delivery comparison table in this guide shows what each package includes.
Can you cut your own Christmas tree at Queens County Farm?
No. Queens Farm runs a tree-and-wreath sale, not a choose-and-cut program. Go for the farm setting and the outing.
Where can you buy an artificial Christmas tree in NYC?
House of Holiday in Ozone Park sells both fresh-cut and artificial trees, so you can compare shape and size in person before committing to something you'll store between holidays.
How do you get rid of a Christmas tree in NYC?
Two ways. The Department of Sanitation now collects undecorated real trees with regular curbside compost pickup on your recycling day, year-round; remove the stand, lights, and tinsel and leave it unbagged. Or bring it to a Mulchfest site in an NYC park, where Parks chips trees into mulch; the 2025–26 window ran December 26 to January 11, and this season's dates post at nyc.gov/mulchfest. If getting it downstairs is the hard part, compare the seller's removal service when you book delivery.
