The best cozy bars in New York aren't all the same kind of place. Some have fireplaces and overstuffed couches. Others feel cozy because they're tiny, candlelit, wood-paneled, hidden down an alley or built like an old neighborhood pub. Once the temperature drops, these are the bars we want for a long glass of wine, a Guinness, a serious cocktail or a quiet nightcap.

This guide covers 31 cozy bars across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens where the room itself is part of the reason to go. We've grouped them by type, from fireplace bars and hotel lounges to old taverns and candlelit cocktail rooms, and we note when a place is better early, gets lively late, or works well for a date or a group. We checked every bar in this guide for fall 2026 and removed spots that have closed.

Cozy NYC Bars With Fireplaces

These are the bars to start with when it's cold out. Each one has a fireplace or a stove in the room, though that doesn't mean it's lit every night, so call ahead if the fire is the whole point. Seats near the hearth go first, and most of these rooms are at their best early in the evening before the crowd builds.

Black Mountain Wine House

Black Mountain Wine House

415 Union St Ground Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11231, USA

The closest thing Brooklyn has to a mountain cabin: wood siding, a brick fireplace, candles and a long list of wines by the glass. Go early if you want a seat near the fire.

Molly's Shebeen Bar + Restaurant

Molly's Shebeen Bar + Restaurant

287 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10010, USA

A real old Irish pub with low ceilings, a mahogany bar and a wood-burning fireplace. Good Guinness, proper pub food, and it's open late.

Black Rabbit

Black Rabbit

91 Greenpoint Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11222, USA

Old-pub feel in Greenpoint, with enclosed wooden booths you can shut yourself into and a fireplace by the benches. Tuesday trivia makes it busier.

Art Bar

Art Bar

52 8th Ave, New York, NY 10014, USA

Walk past the front bar to the back room, where there are couches, rotating art and a fireplace. Casual, open late, and easier than most West Village date spots.

The Portrait Bar

The Portrait Bar

1 W 28th St, New York, NY 10001, USA

Wood-paneled hotel cocktail room built around a stone fireplace, with walls of portraits and serious drinks. Upscale, and tables can come with a time limit.

The Auction House

The Auction House

300 E 89th St, New York, NY 10128, USA

Red velvet, gilded mirrors and a fireplace in a room that feels more like a Victorian parlor than an Upper East Side bar. Opens in the evening and is quieter on weeknights.

Union Hall

Union Hall

702 Union St, Brooklyn, NY 11215, USA

Part library, part pub: bookshelves, leather sofas, a stone fireplace and indoor bocce. The one to pick when you want cozy with a group.

Dynaco

Dynaco

1112 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11216, USA

Dim neighborhood bar with stained glass and a wood stove in the back room. Cash only, and there's usually a layer cake on the back bar.

Donovan's Pub

Donovan's Pub

57-24 Roosevelt Ave, Woodside, NY 11377, USA

A Woodside pub that's been around since 1966, with a fireplace, a dark dining room and one of the better-known burgers in Queens.

The Flatiron Room NoMad

The Flatiron Room NoMad

37 W 26th St, New York, NY 10010, USA

Whiskey bar with a huge bottle list, live music and a fireplace. Pricier and more of a night out than a neighborhood drink, so book ahead.

Blind Tiger

Blind Tiger

281 Bleecker St, New York, NY 10014, USA

Small, wood-lined West Village beer bar with a fireplace and one of the best tap lists in the city. It's busy most nights, so go on an off-hour if you want a seat near the fire.

Cozy Hotel Bars and Lounges in NYC

A good hotel lobby is one of the easiest ways to get a couch, low light and a drink without a reservation. These four range from downtown lobbies with fireplaces to the most famous piano bar uptown. Expect hotel prices, and expect the best seats to fill by mid-evening.

The Bowery Hotel

The Bowery Hotel

335 Bowery, New York, NY 10003, USA

The lobby is the draw: rugs, velvet, dark wood and a big fireplace that feels like someone's very nice living room. Best earlier in the evening.

The Marlton Hotel

The Marlton Hotel

5 W 8th St, New York, NY 10011, USA

A small, bohemian hotel lobby in Greenwich Village with dark wood, vintage furniture and a fireplace. More of a lobby hang than a cocktail bar.

The Lobby Bar

The Lobby Bar

180 Ludlow St, New York, NY 10002, USA

Hotel lobby bar with a stone fireplace and velvet couches. Grab the seats by the fire if they're open.

Bemelmans Bar

Bemelmans Bar

35 E 76th St, New York, NY 10021, USA

Murals, low lamps and live piano and jazz at The Carlyle. It's the splurge pick: drinks are expensive and there's a cover once the music starts.

Cozy Pubs and Old Taverns in NYC

Some of the coziest rooms in the city are just old bars: dark wood, tin ceilings, a proper pint and no reason to hurry. None of these are precious about it. They're pubs first, and that's the appeal.

Fraunces Tavern

Fraunces Tavern

54 Pearl St, New York, NY 10004, USA

Historic tavern with several bar rooms. Head for the Whiskey Bar, which has leather chairs and a fireplace.

Hartley's

Hartley's

14 Putnam Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238, USA

Small, friendly Irish pub on Putnam Avenue with a well-kept Guinness tap and traditional Irish music on Monday nights.

Brooklyn Inn

Brooklyn Inn

148 Hoyt St, Brooklyn, NY 11217, USA

One of Brooklyn's oldest bars: dark carved wood, high ceilings, a pool table in back and no TVs. No food, so eat first.

The Landmark Tavern

The Landmark Tavern

626 11th Ave, New York, NY 10036, USA

An 1868 tavern on Eleventh Avenue with wood paneling, tin ceilings and Irish-American pub food. A good non-hotel option near Midtown.

The Penrose Bar

The Penrose Bar

1590 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10028, USA

Warm lighting, vintage details and a busy neighborhood crowd. Cozy but lively, not quiet, and the kitchen works for a full meal.

The Winslow

The Winslow

243 E 14th St, New York, NY 10003, USA

British-style pub and gin bar on 14th Street with a long gin list and a social crowd. More lively than snug, and it gets loud later, so go early.

Candlelit Cocktail Bars and Intimate Rooms in NYC

Not every cozy bar has a fire going. These rooms get there with candlelight, curtains, booths and small spaces, and most of them take their drinks seriously. Several take reservations, which is worth doing on a Friday or Saturday.

Raines Law Room Chelsea

Raines Law Room Chelsea

48 W 17th St, New York, NY 10011, USA

Candlelight, curtained seating and sofas in a room styled like a Victorian apartment. Built for seated conversation over serious cocktails. Reserve.

The Back Room

The Back Room

102 Norfolk St, New York, NY 10002, USA

Reached down an alley, with velvet seating, chandeliers and cocktails served in teacups. Go early in the week or early in the night; weekends get loud.

Clover Club

Clover Club

210 Smith St, Brooklyn, NY 11201, USA

Brooklyn cocktail institution with a mahogany bar, leather banquettes and a back room with a fireplace. It gets loud when full, so go early for a quiet drink.

Spygold

Spygold

451 10th Ave, New York, NY 10018, USA

Small, firelit cocktail bar downstairs from Greywind near Hudson Yards. It closes early and is shut Sundays, so treat it as a first stop.

Hotel Delmano

Hotel Delmano

82 Berry St, Brooklyn, NY 11211, USA

Small rooms, booths, low light and old paintings, with good cocktails and oysters. The cozy pick in Williamsburg.

Sugar Monk

Sugar Monk

2292 Frederick Douglass Blvd, New York, NY 10027, USA

Moody, plush Harlem cocktail lounge with inventive drinks. Pricier than the neighborhood norm; reserve on weekends.

The Campbell

The Campbell

15 Vanderbilt Ave, New York, NY 10017, USA

A restored 1920s office inside Grand Central with a painted ceiling and a huge stone hearth. Grand more than snug, and dressier than a pub.

Freemans

Freemans

2 Freeman Alley, New York, NY 10002, USA

At the end of Freeman Alley, a rustic tavern-style room with taxidermy and worn leather. It's a restaurant first, so come for dinner or a drink at the bar.

How to Pick a Cozy Bar in NYC

Go early. Almost every bar here is cozier at 6pm than at 11pm. The Back Room, Clover Club and Art Bar's front room all get louder as the night goes on, and Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest.

Don't count on the fire. A bar having a fireplace doesn't mean it's lit on the night you go. If that's the reason for the trip, call first.

Pick the room, not just the bar. At Fraunces Tavern it's the Whiskey Bar. At Art Bar it's the back room. At The Bowery Hotel and The Marlton it's the lobby.

Match the bar to the night. Raines Law Room and Brandy Library are for sitting and talking. Union Hall and The Penrose are for a group. Molly's, Hartley's and Donovan's are for a pint with no plan.
