Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, and a good night out in Austin doesn't have to mean buying a crawl wristband and hoping for the best. Sometimes you want a bar that's been turned into a haunted carnival, sometimes you want dinner somewhere atmospheric, and sometimes you just want to wear a ridiculous costume and dance.

This guide sorts those nights out: seasonal pop-up bars, Halloween dinners, bars that feel spooky all year, and dated parties and events. There are picks for families, for 18-to-20-year-olds, and for anyone whose idea of Halloween stops well short of being chased by a clown.

Plan around two things on Saturday, October 31. Texas hosts Mississippi State at DKR that night, with kickoff in the 5–7 p.m. window, and APD typically closes Sixth Street to cars from Brazos to I-35 on Halloween evening. If you're headed downtown, eat early, leave the car at home, and give yourself extra time.

The Best Halloween Pop-Up Bars in Austin

These are the bars that transform for the season, plus one haunted house that added a bar. Most wrap up on Oct. 31 or Nov. 1.

Gibson Street Bar

Gibson Street Bar

1109 S Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78704, USA

Gibson goes all out every year, and you can tell from the street. Twisted Carnival turns the bar into an abandoned circus with cages, unsettling scenery and Halloween cocktails. Groups can book a private table inside a cage, which beats trying to keep eight people together in a packed room, and JewBoy Sliders handles the food. Regular entry is free through Nov. 1. On Halloween there's a separately ticketed 21+ Mushroom Cowboy Morning Spin from 11 a.m.–2 p.m., and DJ Teeks takes over at 10 p.m.

King Bee

King Bee

1906 E 12th St, Austin, TX 78702, USA

Black Lagoon is a touring horror-tiki pop-up, and King Bee is its Austin home. Expect swampy green light, skeletons and sound effects, with drinks served in spooky collectible tiki mugs and fall flavors like pumpkin-infused spiced rum. Come for the cocktails more than the photo op: this is the pick for friends who care what's in the glass. It runs through Oct. 31.

Nickel City

Nickel City

1133 E 11th St, Austin, TX 78702, USA

Not every Halloween bar has to be scary. Every October, Nickel City turns into Moe's Tavern from The Simpsons, with a Moe cutout, neon signs, a Simpsons arcade game, Flaming Moes and doughnuts as drink garnishes. The on-site food truck becomes Krusty Burger for the season, so you can make a real meal of it. Entry is free through Oct. 31. It's a short walk from King Bee, and the two make a good pair: one funny and nostalgic, the other dark and cocktail-focused.

The Wheel South

The Wheel South

3116 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78704, USA

The Wheel's South Congress bar went Beetlejuice for its first full seasonal takeover, with skeletons, specimen jars and oversized campy lawn decor. Alongside the Halloween cocktails there's a separate non-alcoholic Halloween menu, which makes it an easy call for a group that isn't all drinking. One drink on that list, Mr. Black, is low-alcohol because of its bitters. The Halloween night party runs 4 p.m.–2 a.m., and the bar is 21+. Make sure you're headed to South Congress, not The Wheel's East Austin location.

Sign Bar

Sign Bar

9909 FM 969 Bldg 3, Austin, TX 78724, USA

This is the one for people who actually want to be scared. Fear Fair is a rebuilt haunted clown maze with live actors after dark, and Halloween week (Oct. 26–31) puts six scare actors in it every night. The actor-free daytime walk-through costs $6.50 and the live-actor maze $14.50, with drinks on top. It runs through Nov. 1. Kids are welcome with a parent or legal guardian until 7 p.m., when the bar goes 21+. Since the actors come out after dark, families should plan on the daytime version.

House of Torment

House of Torment

2632 Ridgepoint Dr, Austin, TX 78754, USA

Austin's best-known haunted house added a drink this year: the Nocturne Sanctum, a 21+ secret bar hidden partway through. Ask about it at check-in, stop mid-scare for a shot and a few photo ops, then head back into the dark. It's a haunted house first and a bar second, so buy tickets ahead; it's open select nights through Nov. 8.

Where to Eat in Austin on Halloween

One purpose-built Halloween dinner and two easier sit-down options. For a burger in a properly spooky room, Casino El Camino is in the next section.

Jupiter Supper Club

Jupiter Supper Club

718 Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78701, USA

Jupiter has the one real Halloween dinner on this list. The Spirits Among Us is a four-course meal in Nova Lounge, a red-lit, velvet-draped room, with a live performance built around witches, ghosts and spells. The menu is plant-forward with omnivore options, so it isn't a strictly vegan night. It runs Oct. 31, 8–9:30 p.m., at $150 a person plus 20% gratuity, which covers dinner, the show and one Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Rye Manhattan. Book the prepaid experience on OpenTable and add dietary needs when you do. With the UT game letting out and Sixth Street closed a few blocks away, get downtown early.

The Cavalier

The Cavalier

2400 Webberville Rd A, Austin, TX 78702, USA

The Cavalier is a neighborhood dive with a from-scratch kitchen doing Southern-leaning bar food, plus a dog-friendly patio, a pool table and vintage arcade games. On Halloween it throws a party from 8 p.m.–midnight with Dana Channing Brown, food and drink specials, and a costume contest at 10. There are no reservations, so come early, eat, and keep your table for the party. The kitchen stays open until midnight on Saturdays.

Clay Pit

Clay Pit

1601 Guadalupe St, Austin, TX 78701, USA

Clay Pit is a proper sit-down dinner with ghost-story credentials instead of a costume contest. Its historic building turns up on lists of Austin's haunted places, and the curries, tandoor dishes and naan make it easy to feed a table where not everyone wants burgers. Book ahead and treat the ghosts as atmosphere: there's no special Halloween program.

Spooky Bars That Don't Need an October Makeover

These three feel right for Halloween any night of the year, which also makes them good fallbacks when the pop-ups are packed.

The Driskill Bar

The Driskill Bar

604 Brazos St, Austin, TX 78701, USA

The Driskill is Austin's most famous haunted hotel, and its bar is the spot for a dressed-up drink with old-building atmosphere. You don't need to believe the ghost stories to enjoy them. Expect cocktails, small plates and room to talk, not a maze or a scheduled scare. The hotel sits at the west end of the Sixth Street stretch APD usually closes on Halloween night, so it's an easier stop before dinner than at 11 p.m. on the 31st.

Mama Dearest

Mama Dearest

515 Pedernales St, Austin, TX 78702, USA

Mama Dearest skips the seasonal makeover because it doesn't need one: the taxidermy, dolls and deliberately strange decor are up all year. It's less a polished installation than a room that makes you ask what exactly is going on in here, which suits a group that would rather find a distinctive neighborhood bar than queue for a pop-up. On Friday, Oct. 30, there's free live music with Preachers OHC at 5:30 p.m. and London Swinging at 8, an easy start to the weekend for anyone who'd rather hear a band than join a crawl.

Casino El Camino

Casino El Camino

517 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701, USA

Casino El Camino is a dark, horror-leaning dive with big burgers, and it earns a place here whether or not it's Halloween. It's in the middle of the stretch of Sixth Street APD typically closes on Halloween night, though, so treat it as a Thursday or Friday pick, or an early burger on the 31st before the crowds arrive. The bar's open 11:30 a.m.–2 a.m., but don't count on the kitchen running that late.

Halloween Parties and Events in Austin

Dated events, from a kids' carnival on Saturday afternoon to a goth dance floor that runs until 2 a.m. Daytime and family picks come first.

Meanwhile Brewing

Meanwhile Brewing

3901 Promontory Point Dr, Austin, TX 78744, USA

Meanwhile is the family pick. Its Oct. 31 carnival runs noon–4 p.m. with games, a photo booth, free face painting, a puppet magic show and a kids' costume contest at 3, with food trucks for lunch and specials in the taproom and creamery. On Thursday, Oct. 29, the brewery screens Frankenweenie at 6 p.m. and Young Frankenstein at 7:30, and admission is free. Get there early for a seat and make it a food-truck dinner and a movie.

Jester King Brewery & Kitchen

Jester King Brewery & Kitchen

13187 Fitzhugh Rd, Austin, TX 78736, USA

Jester King is an outing in itself, on a ranch outside the city. On Saturday it hosts an all-ages Halloween market with local makers, beer and food. For something stranger, Doom Metal Goat Yoga starts at 10 a.m. (check-in 9:30) in the goat pen; it's booked separately, and dogs aren't allowed. Plan the drive, because this isn't a stop you tack onto a downtown night.

P6 at The LINE

P6 at The LINE

111 E Cesar Chavez St, Austin, TX 78701, USA

A free rooftop costume party is rare on Halloween, and P6 has one. Park & Scream runs Oct. 31, 7–10 p.m., with a 1970s horror-film theme and a DJ set from Maximum Overdrive; RSVPs are encouraged through The LINE. The early finish works either way: the whole night for someone who doesn't want a 2 a.m. close, or a first stop before something later. Drinks are on you.

Azul Rooftop

Azul Rooftop

310 E 5th St., Austin, TX 78701, USA

Ghoul at Azul is a three-night rooftop takeover, Oct. 29–31, with four limited-time Halloween cocktails and the skyline behind them. It suits a date or a small group that wants to dress up without signing on for a big dance party. Pair it with dinner elsewhere downtown or book a table through Azul's OpenTable link; Thursday or Friday will be calmer than Saturday.

Fairmont Austin

Fairmont Austin

101 Red River St, Austin, TX 78701, USA

Fairmont is the big ticketed production: four DJs across Palm Court, Palm Park Ballroom and Rules & Regs, 9 p.m.–2 a.m. on Oct. 31, 21+. Go with it when your group wants one destination for the whole night instead of a string of bars. Check your ticket type. VIP includes the prepaid Rules & Regs bar from 9–11 p.m.; other ticket holders get into Rules & Regs from 11. Tickets are sold through the organizer's Eventbrite page.

Ani's Day & Night

Ani's Day & Night

7107 E Riverside Dr #6709, Austin, TX 78741, USA

Ani's gives Halloween night an actual program. Tails From the Crypt mixes drag and burlesque with horror storytelling, trivia, raffles, a costume contest and vendors. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 31, the show starts around 7:30, and the Monster Mash dance party with DJ Xoy kicks off at 10. It's 18+, which makes it one of the few picks here open to 18-to-20-year-olds. The night before, Oct. 30, Ani's has a swing-dance evening from 7–11 p.m.

Elysium

Elysium

705 Red River St, Austin, TX 78701, USA

Elysium, Austin's oldest goth club, is where the music matters as much as the costumes. A Gothic Halloween brings DJs Neph and Depressed Mode playing goth, darkwave, industrial and post-punk, with a special drink menu and a midnight costume contest. Doors open at 9 p.m. on Oct. 31; the $13 cover is cash only, and it's 21+ with ID.

Prefer a Bar Crawl? 6th Sense

6th Sense runs Oct. 30 and 31, 7 p.m.–2 a.m., on East Sixth, east of I-35 and away from the downtown blocks that close to traffic. The 21+ wristband, sold online only and picked up at Zilker Brewing (1701 E. 6th St.) from 7–9 p.m., gets you into participating bars with cover waived and drink specials. Drinks themselves aren't included.

What works for families with kids?
Meanwhile Brewing's carnival on Saturday, noon–4 p.m., is built for them, and Jester King's Halloween market is all ages. Sign Bar welcomes kids with a guardian before 7 p.m., when the actor-free maze is running. Most other places on this list are 21+, playful themes included.

Ani's Day & Night's Tails From the Crypt cabaret is 18+. Elysium, Fairmont, The Wheel South, the House of Torment bar and the 6th Sense crawl are all 21+.
