San Francisco does Halloween in layers. Some bars spend all of October filled with coffins, axes and glowing graffiti. In ticketed pop-ups, the cocktail is part of the show. A few restaurants serve a real dinner before the costumes and DJs take over, and a handful of dark, theatrical bars feel right for Halloween without changing a thing.
This year Halloween falls on a Saturday, October 31, so the whole weekend turns into a costume party. The Marina and Cow Hollow have the most walkable cluster of pop-ups, and Union Square and Lower Nob Hill have the most decorated cocktail bars. SoMa has the city's biggest horror production, while the Castro and Mission bring the street-party energy. The month-long takeovers come first in this guide, followed by the events that only happen this weekend.

Halloween Pop-Up Bars in San Francisco
These are the bars that go all out for October. You can walk into Black Lagoon and Rye like any other bar. The Nightmare Bar, Ghostlight and Frankenstein's Lab run on timed tickets, so book them for a planned group night rather than a bar-hop.

Black Lagoon at The Sea Star
2289 3rd St, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA
The Sea Star goes completely dark for October: coffins, gravestones and witchy apothecary props fill the room, and the regular drinks are swapped for a dedicated horror cocktail menu. It still feels like a serious cocktail bar, just one that's moved into a crypt. There's no ticket or time slot, which makes it an easy first stop, a festive date or a small-group night. Get there early on Fridays and Saturdays because the room is compact. Details: Oct 5–31 · walk-in · no cover

Rye: The Shining Bar
688 Geary St, San Francisco, CA 94102, USA
Rye has turned itself into The Shining for several Octobers now, and it still feels handmade. Axes hang from the ceiling, the menus are shaped like the Grady sisters, and there's a tribute to Shelley Duvall. Cocktails include Tony's Negroni and the Elevator of Blood. It's small and dark with no cover, so come on a weeknight or right at opening to see the decor before the weekend crowds. Details: Through Oct 31 · walk-in · no cover

The Nightmare Bar at The Blue Light
1979 Union St, San Francisco, CA 94123, USA
The Blue Light's rooms are taken over by horror-movie props, moody lighting and photo setups, with games running through each 90-minute session. It's playful rather than scary, which makes it a good pick for groups and birthday nights. A welcome drink is included, and costumes are encouraged, but realistic weapons and full-face masks aren't allowed. General admission doesn't guarantee a seat, so book a table package if you need one. Details: Oct 8–31 · 90-minute timed tickets · 21+ · one welcome drink · ADA accessible

Ghostlight
580 Sutter St, San Francisco, CA 94102, USA
The whole room glows under blacklights, the walls are covered in neon graffiti, and you get a marker to add your own. Skip it if you want cobwebs and skeletons, but it's the most photogenic stop on this list. The later Grave Rave sessions turn into a proper party. It moved a few doors down this year, so ignore older listings at 588 Sutter. Details: October sessions · timed tickets · check your entry time

Frankenstein's Mad Scientist Cocktail Lab
2036 Lombard St, San Francisco, CA 94123, USA
The basement under Westwood is set up as a mad scientist's lab, full of beakers, potions and test tubes. You add the final ingredients to your own cocktail or mocktail, and it bubbles, smokes or changes color. The 90-minute session gives a group a clear start and finish, and tarot readings cost extra. Wizards & Wands, a fantasy-themed bar a couple of doors down, is an easy follow-up for anyone who'd rather have magic than monsters. Details: Through Oct 31 · 90-minute timed tickets from about $22 · 21+ · one drink included

Halloween Restaurants and Dinner-and-a-Show
San Francisco has fewer Halloween restaurants than Halloween bars, but the good ones are worth planning around. Palm House works on any night in October. Chotto Matte is the big dinner on Halloween itself, and Brujera turns dinner into part of a theatrical night out.

The Haunting at Palm House
2032 Union St, San Francisco, CA 94123, USA
Palm House hangs decorations from the ceiling, adds theatrical touches around the dining room and puts Halloween cocktails on the menu next to its usual tropical-leaning food. You get a sit-down meal without giving up the pop-up atmosphere, which is rare. It's also a short walk from The Nightmare Bar and Frankenstein's Lab, so it's the natural dinner before a night in the Marina. Details: Decor through Nov 1 · full food menu · reservations recommended, walk-ins when there's room

Chotto Matte
50 O'Farrell St, San Francisco, CA 94108, USA
On Halloween night, Chotto Matte serves a menu of Japanese-Peruvian Halloween specials from 5 p.m. After dinner, the bar and lounge turn into a costume party with a DJ, themed cocktails, a costume contest, rooftop views and a free sake tasting. Dinner and the party are booked separately, so a table doesn't get you into the party. Rye, Ghostlight and Zombie Village are all an easy walk for later. Details: Saturday, Oct 31 · dinner from 5 p.m. · sake tasting 6–9 p.m. · book dinner and RSVP for the party separately

Brujera at 200 Channels
111 6th St, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA
Brujera turns 200 Channels into a haunted forest under a blood-red moon. Burlesque, cabaret and aerial acts tell a story of witches and supernatural creatures, and it's a real adults-only show, not background entertainment. For dinner, The Pawn Shop's hidden tapas bar is around the corner. Leave about 90 minutes for the meal before or after the show and it's a complete date night in one block. Details: Through Nov 7 · show tickets sold separately

The Pawn Shop
993 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA
The Pawn Shop is the dinner half of a Brujera night: a hidden Spanish and Mediterranean tapas bar and speakeasy around the corner from 200 Channels. Leave about 90 minutes for the meal before or after the show. Details: Confirm the booking policy before you go
Spooky Bars That Don't Need a Halloween Makeover
These places are dark and strange all year, so they're good fallbacks when the ticketed pop-ups sell out. Terror Vault is the exception: it's a full horror production, and its bar is open to anyone.

Fang Bang and Terror Vault
88 5th St, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA
Terror Vault's 2026 show, SLASHED: Return to Hellville, drops you inside a 1980s slasher movie, moving through an abandoned school, a haunted campground, a frat house and a video store. Downstairs in the old vault, Fang Bang is a vampire bar with goth and New Wave music, performers and Halloween cocktails. You don't need a Terror Vault ticket to drink at Fang Bang, and there's no cover while the show is running. Book the haunt if you want real scares, or just come for the bar. Details: Through Nov 1 · haunt is 18+ with timed tickets · Fang Bang has no cover during show hours · behind-the-scenes tours Nov 7–8

Zombie Village
441 Jones St, San Francisco, CA 94102, USA
Zombie Village is spooky all year: shadowy rooms, carved figures and strong rum cocktails. On Halloween it throws a no-cover party, with surf-rock band The Batrays playing from 9 to 11 p.m. Couples can arrive early for open seating, while groups should reserve one of the enclosed tiki huts instead of hoping for stools together. Details: Year-round · Oct 31 party 5 p.m.–midnight · no cover · 21+

Last Rites
718 14th St, San Francisco, CA 94114, USA
Last Rites is dressed as a dim, tropical ruin in the aftermath of a plane crash, with elaborate cocktails to match. It works for Halloween every night of the year without changing a thing. Tables are first-come, first-served, so it's a reliable plan B when everything else is sold out, and it's a short walk to the Castro or the Mission for the street parties. Details: Year-round · walk-in · ask about private areas for larger groups
Halloween Weekend Events and Parties in San Francisco
These only happen on October 29 and Halloween weekend. The street parties are free. The rooftop and club parties need an RSVP or ticket, so sort those out before Saturday.

Fright NightLife at the California Academy of Sciences
55 Music Concourse Dr, San Francisco, CA 94118, USA
The museum's adults-only Thursday night becomes a Halloween party hosted by drag legend Peaches Christ, who also co-founded Terror Vault. Scare actors and vampires roam the aquarium and rainforest, alongside a drag show, costume contest, face painting, flash tattoos, arcade games and tarot readings. There's enough going on to fill the whole evening without leaving the building. Details: Thursday, Oct 29, 6–10 p.m. · 21+ with physical photo ID · planetarium add-on $7

Castro Night Market: Halloween Edition
18th St at Castro St, San Francisco, CA 94114, USA
The Castro's monthly night market comes back for Halloween night, with 18th Street closed for food vendors, local merchants, two stages and a costume contest. It's a tamer, organized version of the neighborhood's old Halloween street party, and it's the clearest pick on this list if you have a mixed-age group. Start here, then head to Beaux or QBar once it wraps. Details: Saturday, Oct 31, 5–10 p.m. · free

DanceOWeen
16th St BART Plaza, 2000 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA
DanceOWeen is a free costume dance party that rolls from the BART plaza toward Valencia Street. Wear comfortable shoes, and check the organizer's live updates if you're arriving late, since the party moves. Eat an early dinner in the Mission or have a drink at Last Rites first. Details: Saturday, Oct 31, about 7:30–11:30 p.m. · free · costumes expected

Gumbo Social Halloween Block Party
5176 3rd St, San Francisco, CA 94124, USA
Gumbo Social throws a neighborhood block party in the afternoon and early evening, which makes it the easiest Halloween plan for anyone who doesn't want a late night. Black Lagoon in Dogpatch is a short ride up 3rd Street for a cocktail afterward. Details: Saturday, Oct 31, 3–8 p.m. · free with RSVP

The Devil's Sea at KAIYŌ Rooftop
701 3rd St 12th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA
KAIYŌ's rooftop party is themed around Japanese yōkai spirits, with DJ Playstation, a costume contest and views over SoMa. Standing room is free with an RSVP, and tables are booked separately. Eat at the restaurant downstairs first if you want a real dinner. Details: Saturday, Oct 31, 9 p.m.–1 a.m. · 21+ on the rooftop · free standing-room RSVP or a booked table

La Cave Maudite at Verjus
550 Washington St, San Francisco, CA 94111, USA
Verjus is the grown-up alternative to a club night: vinyl DJs, a bowl of spooky punch, special wine pours and a costume contest in a Parisian-style wine bar. The full food menu stops at 10 p.m., so arrive early if you want to eat properly. Details: Saturday, Oct 31, 7–11 p.m. · ticketed · limited capacity

Hallo-Queen at Beaux
2344 Market St, San Francisco, CA 94114, USA
Beaux throws a Halloween dance party with DJs, go-go dancers and performances that runs until 3 a.m. It's the natural next stop when the Castro night market winds down. Details: Saturday, Oct 31, 8 p.m.–3 a.m. · ticketed · 21+

Pop-O-Ween at QBar
456 Castro St # B, San Francisco, CA 94114, USA
QBar's Halloween party is all pop music and a packed, straightforward dance floor, without a theatrical show. Go here if your group wants songs they know rather than a DJ set. Details: Saturday, Oct 31, 8 p.m.–2 a.m. · check admission
Also this weekend: Crawloween, a pub crawl across more than 40 bars in Polk Gulch, the Marina, Cow Hollow, Russian Hill, Union Square and Lower Nob Hill, runs Oct 30, Oct 31 and Nov 1, with wristbands, drink specials and shuttles. It's fun for a big group, but skip it if you've got timed reservations elsewhere that night. Club nights at Madarae, Public Works, The Stud and 888 Garage are destination events rather than easy add-ons.
Three Easy Halloween Nights Out
Each of these plans has one timed booking at most, so a late dinner or a long line won't wreck the evening.
Marina and Cow Hollow: the walkable pop-up crawl. Have dinner at Palm House, then book one timed stop: either The Nightmare Bar or Frankenstein's Lab, not both. End at Wizards & Wands or any bar on Union Street.
Union Square and SoMa: dinner, drinks and a scare. Eat at Chotto Matte, then walk to Rye for an intimate cocktail or Ghostlight for the neon party. Finish at Fang Bang, with a Terror Vault ticket if your group wants real scares.
Castro and Mission: the street-party plan. Start early at Last Rites, which also makes our first-date bars and 30s bars guides. Pick the Castro Night Market or DanceOWeen, then dance late at Beaux or QBar.
