A first-date bar has a narrower job than a great bar. It needs enough energy to cover the odd pause, but not so much that you spend the night leaning in and asking each other to repeat things. You want a seat, a good drink and an easy exit after one round, or an easy way to keep going.
San Francisco is good at this. A drink on Valencia can turn into dinner around the corner, a glass at Fort Mason comes with a waterfront walk, and North Beach and Chinatown put a second stop a block away. This isn't a ranking of the city's most technical cocktail programs. It's a guide to the bars that actually work for a first date, grouped by neighborhood, with what you need to know about booking, seating and noise.
One rule covers almost every bar here: go early. Most of these rooms are different places at 6:30 than at 9:30, and a weeknight, or a start before 7:30 on Friday or Saturday, is the easiest way to get two seats together and actually hear each other.
For a date that's more about a fireplace than a cocktail list, see our guide to San Francisco's coziest bars. If it goes well and you're both hungry at midnight, the late-night food guide has the kitchens still cooking.

First-Date Bars in the Mission and Bernal Heights
The Mission has the deepest bench of first-date bars in the city, and it's the easiest neighborhood to improvise in: start with a drink, add food if it's going well, and walk to a second bar without turning it into a plan.

ABV
3174 16th St, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA
ABV is the safest bet in the city for most first dates. It feels like a real neighborhood bar rather than a date-night set, but the cocktails are serious and the burger alone is a reason to stay. It doesn't take reservations, and the kitchen runs until midnight every night, so one drink can turn into dinner without a second booking.

Buddy
3115 22nd St, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA
The closest thing in town to a Parisian wine bar: small, warm and a little dressed up, with about ten wines by the glass, a short cocktail list and real plates like braised lamb shank. Book on Resy, since there are only a handful of bar seats. Mondays bring a Levantine pop-up to the kitchen.

Bar Gemini
2845 18th St, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA
One of the city's best wine-first picks, with green plaster walls, redwood booths and a natural-leaning list. Book a booth on Resy, or take a heated outdoor table for more room and less noise. The food goes well past snacks (cacio e pepe deviled eggs, real mains, oysters), and there's a proper nonalcoholic list. Closed Sundays.

Lone Palm
3394 22nd St, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA
One of the last white-tablecloth lounges in town, with votives on every table, neon behind the mirrored bar and a martini that costs less than it should. It's dim and quiet, so it's romantic without trying. Keep the order simple, and go early; it's small.

The Beehive
842 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA
A playful 1960s room with low-slung lounge seating, a candlelit back lounge, good cocktails and easy bites like sliders and spinach dip. There's enough going on to keep things moving, and it's still fine for conversation before the later Valencia crowd shows up. Closed Mondays.

True Laurel
753 Alabama St, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA
From the Lazy Bear team, for someone who cares about cocktails but doesn't want a lecture. The drinks change with the seasons, there's a real mocktail list, and the room stays conversational even when it's full. The food (get the patty melt) is enough to make a night of it, and Tock reservations open three weeks out. Closed Mondays.

Wildhawk
3464 19th St, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA
A dark, dramatic martini and cocktail lounge in the old Lexington Club space, with floral wallpaper and cushioned seats. It's calmer than its location near Valencia suggests, which works in your favor, and dozens of second stops are a few blocks away. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 5:30.

Trick Dog
3010 20th St, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA
Trick Dog rewrites its whole menu around a new theme every six months or so, which hands you something to talk about from the first minute. The drinks are ambitious, the mood is playful, and burgers upstairs mean you can stay past round one. Reservations are available on SevenRooms but not required.

20 Spot
3565 20th St, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA
In a former record store with the old neon sign still up, 20 Spot feels like the candlelit living room of someone with very good taste in wine and music, with full albums playing on vinyl. It's quieter than anything on Valencia, and the food is real (start with the chicken liver mousse). It closes by 9 or 10:30, so plan on 6 or 7.

Etcetera Wine Bar
795 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA
A comfortable middle ground between a casual glass and a full night out, with wine flights, cheese and charcuterie, and French-style pizzas. Book through its website, or walk in for a bar seat. Live music on several weeknights adds warmth rather than drowning out the conversation, but ask for a table away from the band.

The Royal Cuckoo
3202 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA
It calls itself the only organ lounge in Northern California: a Hammond organ built into the end of the bar, church pews, vintage lamps, old records and a string-lit backyard. Bands start at 8:30 most nights (7 on Mondays), so come before then for a quiet drink, or take the backyard once the music starts. Better for two people who like places with personality than for a high-stakes first meeting.

First-Date Bars in Hayes Valley, NoPa and the Haight
Hayes Valley is the easy pick for a polished drink before dinner; Divisadero and the Haight are more casual and local. Most of these bars are small, so timing matters more than planning.

Birba
458 Grove St, San Francisco, CA 94102, USA
Birba's plant-filled back patio is one of the nicest places in Hayes Valley for a glass of wine and a few bites, like tinned fish, burrata or a cheese board. It's walk-in only (your whole party has to be there to be seated) and closes at 8 or 9, so make it the first stop, not the last.

Anina
482 Hayes St, San Francisco, CA 94102, USA
Bright, social and made for an aperitivo-style date, with spritzes, amaro and a big heated patio full of picnic tables. It's mostly walk-in, and dinner in Hayes Valley is a short walk away.

Linden Room
292 Linden St, San Francisco, CA 94102, USA
Nightbird's tiny cocktail bar is small enough that the room becomes part of the date. Drinks come in vintage glassware, groups max out at four and cocktail seats are first come. That intimacy is the draw and the risk: be there at 5 when it opens, and have a backup nearby. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Fool's Errand
639A Divisadero St, San Francisco, CA 94117, USA
A snug, cabin-like wine-and-beer bar with a low ceiling, a strong Riesling list and window seats onto Divisadero. It gets packed in the evening, so an afternoon or early start is the move, and there's plenty of dinner along Divisadero after.

Horsefeather
528 Divisadero St, San Francisco, CA 94117, USA
Cocktails, a full menu (get the duck fat fries) and a sunny, plant-hung atrium make this a good call when dinner is possible but not promised. Book a table on OpenTable for certainty; bar seats are first come. It's packed most nights, so book before 7:30 if conversation matters.

Stoa
701 Haight St, San Francisco, CA 94117, USA
The Lower Haight's moodiest date bar, with booths, low light and short, precise cocktails. The food is unusually good (grilled mochi, cumin lamb belly tacos), so a drink can quietly turn into dinner. No reservations, and an early weeknight is the sweet spot.

The Alembic
1725 Haight St, San Francisco, CA 94117, USA
Dark wood, floral wallpaper, bookshelves and leather booths, with serious whiskey and agave lists and food that holds its own. It's owned by the people behind the Booksmith next door, which explains the look. No reservations and not many seats, so go early and check which days it's open.

Woods Lowside
530 Haight St, San Francisco, CA 94117, USA
A casual alternative to the neighborhood's cocktail bars, with Woods' own beer, a long natural-wine list, Tacos Oscar in the kitchen and a plant-filled backyard. Good when the date should feel spontaneous; some Mondays add live jazz.
First-Date Bars in the Castro and Duboce Triangle
Three very different dates: a comfortable cocktail bar, a game-driven icebreaker and an immersive rum escape.

Blackbird
2124 Market St, San Francisco, CA 94114, USA
A comfortable Market Street cocktail bar with lounge seating, a red banquette, and a pool table and photo booth in back if the conversation needs a hand. It's an LGBTQ+ bar that welcomes everyone, and it's busiest at happy hour and on weekends, so a weeknight is the easiest version. Groups of 10 or more can book ahead; otherwise just walk in.

The Detour
2200A Market St, San Francisco, CA 94114, USA
The best activity date in the guide: about 40 arcade games, a row of pinball machines and a 10-player Killer Queen cabinet, plus trivia on Thursdays and free play on the first Tuesday of the month. Playing side by side takes the pressure off when sitting across a table feels too formal. It's loud and game-focused, which is the point, so save the long talk for the walk afterward.

Last Rites
718 14th St, San Francisco, CA 94114, USA
A Polynesian-noir rum bar where you can sit inside a crashed-plane fuselage, under banyan roots and giant stone skulls. The room hands you conversation material, so it suits someone who enjoys a little theater, and any house cocktail can be made nonalcoholic. No reservations, so expect a wait at peak times; earlier is easier. Closed Mondays.
First-Date Bars in Fort Mason, Cow Hollow and Pacific Heights
The north side is strongest for polished dates, waterfront walks and grown-up bars that don't need a dinner reservation.

The Interval
Center Building A, 2 Marina Blvd, San Francisco, CA 94123, USA
Part café, part bar, part museum, with a floor-to-ceiling library, bottles hanging from the ceiling and gin and tonics on draft. The setting makes conversation easy, and the Fort Mason waterfront supplies the walk. It opens at 10 a.m. on weekdays, which makes it one of the few good daytime first dates in the city. No reservations, and hours shift around events, so check before crossing town.

Left Door
1905 Union St, San Francisco, CA 94123, USA
The pick for an elevated date that stops short of a formal dinner. The hushed upstairs room above the Bus Stop sports bar has a fireplace, velvet chairs and jewel-toned wallpaper, and pours martinis (try the seaweed-gin dirty one) alongside oysters and caviar bumps. Book on Resy for weekends; weekday walk-ins can often get bar seats. Closed Mondays.

Scopo Divino
2800 California St #101, San Francisco, CA 94115, USA
A comfortable wine lounge with food and half-price oysters with wine from 3 to 6. It books on OpenTable and holds plenty of seats for walk-ins. There's live music most nights, so check the calendar if you want it quiet. Handy for anyone coming from the Presidio, Laurel Heights or the Richmond.

The Social Study
1795 Geary Blvd, San Francisco, CA 94118, USA
About as unintimidating as a bar gets, with exposed brick, a long communal table by the windows and movies projected on the wall. It's beer and wine (plus wine- and beer-based cocktails) with snacks and sliders, and it opens in the early afternoon, which makes for an easy weekday meetup. DJs Thursday through Saturday make it busier late.

Laureate
444 Presidio Ave, San Francisco, CA 94115, USA
Hotel bars are underrated first-date territory, and the midcentury lounge at the Laurel Inn, with a terrazzo fireplace and brass accents, is a good example. There's light food like flatbreads and dips and a 4-to-6 happy hour, and you won't fight for seats the way you will at the smaller cocktail bars. A smart fallback when reliability matters more than buzz.
First-Date Bars in Russian Hill, Nob Hill and the Tenderloin
Everything from neighborhood wine bars to booking-only speakeasies. Pick based on whether the date should feel spontaneous or planned.

Bar Iris
2310 Polk St, San Francisco, CA 94109, USA
The sister bar to Michelin-starred Nisei next door, with hinoki tables, wingback chairs and cocktails built on Japanese spirits. Izakaya bites like chicken karaage and milk bread with miso-honey butter mean you can stay a while. Parties of five or fewer walk in, so go early. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

Macondray
2209 Polk St, San Francisco, CA 94109, USA
Cocktails and real food (a lobster roll, oysters, frozen palomas) under enough hanging plants to pass for a greenhouse, with booths that make conversation easy. Good when one of you is hungry and the other only planned on a drink, and there's a nonalcoholic spritz for anyone skipping the booze.

Union Larder
1945 Hyde St, San Francisco, CA 94109, USA
An easy wine-and-cheese date behind a wall of windows on Hyde Street, with cable cars rolling past the bar seats. A big cheese selection and house charcuterie let you linger without ordering a meal. It's small, so plan on walking in before the dinner rush. Closed Mondays.

Bar Bibi
1448 Pacific Ave, San Francisco, CA 94109, USA
A natural-wine bar with a real kitchen (spaghetti vongole, brick chicken with chermoula), a mezzanine, a pillow-strewn lounge corner and sidewalk tables on a quiet stretch of Pacific. It feels current but not like a scene. Seating is open and you order at the bar, with no table reservations. Closed Tuesdays.

Amélie
1754 Polk St, San Francisco, CA 94109, USA
A lively French wine bar and bistro with flatbreads, cheese and charcuterie, cocktails and a long list to talk your way through. Live music runs Thursday through Sunday, so go Monday to Wednesday if conversation matters more than the band. Book on Resy, and come during the daily 4-to-6 happy hour for a custom wine flight.

Stookey's Club Moderne
895 Bush St, San Francisco, CA 94108, USA
An Art Deco lounge built around post-Prohibition San Francisco, with white-jacketed bartenders, vintage glassware and a 2 a.m. close most nights. Next door, Stookey's Blue Room has live music Wednesday through Saturday, including a no-cover jazz jam on Wednesdays, so you can start at the bar and move over for a set.

Bourbon & Branch
501 Jones St, San Francisco, CA 94102, USA
For a planned first date, not a spontaneous one. Book the main bar on OpenTable and the night's password arrives by email; the near-dark room and house rules (no phones, no standing at the bar) set the mood instantly. Main-bar bookings run one to two hours, so treat it as the opening act. The book-lined Library takes walk-ins.
First-Date Bars in North Beach, Chinatown and Jackson Square
Some of the most memorable rooms in the city, for when you want the setting to carry part of the date. Reservations and timing matter more here.

Golden Sardine
362 Columbus Ave, San Francisco, CA 94133, USA
A wine bar and poetry bookstore in one narrow room, with an outsized German Riesling list, about ten kinds of tinned fish and an upstairs poetry loft. Grab the big front window if you can, or the parklet. It hosts readings and winemaker nights, so check the calendar if you want a quiet one.

Verjus
550 Washington St, San Francisco, CA 94111, USA
A candlelit French wine bar from the Quince and Cotogna team, with a serious bottle list, an open kitchen and real food like pâté en croûte and soupe de poisson. Reservations open a week out and go fast, but a walk-in waitlist starts at 4. Closed Sunday and Monday. Afterward, Jackson Square is good for a walk.

Moongate Lounge
28 Waverly Pl, San Francisco, CA 94108, USA
One of the strongest "this feels like a real night out" picks in the city: red velvet booths, lotus lamps and a glowing skylight on the top floor above Mister Jiu's, with cocktails built around the lunar calendar. Book on Tock up to two weeks out, though walk-ins are almost always welcome. Closed Sunday and Monday; dinner is downstairs.

Cold Drinks Bar
644 Broadway, San Francisco, CA 94133, USA
A hidden Scotch lounge: follow the bats painted up the stairwell to a bat-marked door. Inside, bartenders in white tuxedos pour from more than 350 whiskies in an Old Shanghai-style room. Book on OpenTable. Best for someone who likes spirit-forward drinks more than a broad casual menu.
First-Date Bars Downtown and in SoMa
After-work territory, easiest on weeknights. Most of these sit within a few blocks of each other around Market Street.

The Treasury
200 Bush St #101, San Francisco, CA 94104, USA
The most dramatic after-work room downtown, in the 1916 Standard Oil building, with double-height ceilings, a curved soapstone bar and one of the better sherry lists in town. Sliders and deviled eggs keep you going. It's open weekdays only, so it's an after-work date for two people who work nearby; bar seats are walk-in.

Pacific Cocktail Haven
550 Sutter St, San Francisco, CA 94108, USA
Creative cocktails built on Asian-Pacific ingredients (start with the pandan Leeward Negroni), red banquettes and an open-air front courtyard. It's first come, first served with no reservations, so being there at 5 beats the later line. There's no kitchen, but you can bring food in. Closed Sundays.

The Dawn Club
10 Annie St, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA
A dressed-up cocktail bar off Market with live bands every night it's open, mostly jazz with some swing and Latin nights mixed in. Tables booked between 5 and 7 p.m. are free; after 7 there's a per-person fee that goes straight to the musicians, and the music starts at 8. Come early to talk and stay for the first set if it's going well. There's no food, so plan dinner separately. Closed Sundays.

Novela
662 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94105, USA
A literary-themed lounge with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, a menu organized into chapters and punch on tap. It fills up right after work, so book a table or come a little later on a weeknight. Friday and Saturday run late and get more nightlife-y. Closed Sundays.

Kona's Street Market
32 3rd St, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA
A playful cocktail menu organized by regions of the world, from the Pacific Cocktail Haven team, with a neon portrait of the owner's dog watching over the bar. The dedicated zero-proof section makes it one of the best picks when one of you isn't drinking. It's open Tuesday through Friday only, so it's a weeknight date.
First-Date Bars in Dogpatch
A neighborhood cocktail bar and a wine-driven restaurant, with plenty of dinner options in between.

Third Rail
628 20th St, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA
A spare, approachable cocktail bar that still bills itself as a cocktail-and-jerky bar, which tells you it doesn't take itself too seriously. The surrounding blocks have enough restaurants for an easy second stop. It's open until 2 a.m. on weekends, but early evening is the better first-date window.

Ungrafted
2419 3rd St, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA
A neighborhood restaurant, wine bar and bottle shop with a France-first list and staff who know it well without quizzing you. The 12-seat bar serves the full menu, so it's easy to turn a glass into dinner; book on Resy if that's the plan. It closes at 8 or 9 and is closed Sunday and Monday, so think 6 p.m., not 9.
First-Date Bars in the Richmond and Sunset
The west side is best for relaxed neighborhood dates. These bars feel less performative than downtown, and several pair with Golden Gate Park, Clement Street or Ocean Beach.

High Treason
443 Clement St, San Francisco, CA 94118, USA
A low-pressure wine bar from two sommeliers, with records stacked between the bottles at the end of a long, low bar. It's wine, beer, small bites and vinyl, and nobody expects you to dress up. It opens at 4 every day; come early for seats, then head down Clement for dinner if the date earns it.

Rampant Bottle & Bar
3516 Balboa St, San Francisco, CA 94121, USA
A welcoming natural-wine bar and bottle shop where the owners will steer you toward something unfamiliar without making it a test. The glass list rotates, and the chocolate chip cookies come out of a toaster oven hot. It closes by 9 or 10 and is closed Tuesdays.

White Cap
3608 Taraval St, San Francisco, CA 94116, USA
Surf-bar cocktails in a room built for Ocean Beach, with driftwood walls, teal banquettes, old surf films on a screen and a fireplace in the back. There's outdoor seating too. It's one of the best west-side picks for a drink and then a walk by the water; bring a layer.

Lost and Found
1439 Taraval St, San Francisco, CA 94116, USA
A quiet neighborhood cocktail bar with booths, low music and drinks named after SF landmarks. The kitchen does Asian-leaning comfort food like loco moco and garlic noodles, so dinner's easy. If the night wants to get sillier, it has two private karaoke rooms. Book on OpenTable, though you rarely need to.

Pearl 6101
6101 California St, San Francisco, CA 94121, USA
More restaurant than bar, in a big, airy old apothecary space from the Pizzetta 211 team, but the bar and the drinks make it a great first date when dinner is likely. It opens at 5 every day. Book on Resy if you can; otherwise try for bar seats right at opening.
What a First Date Costs in San Francisco
Plan on roughly $40 to $60 for one drink each once tax and tip are in. These are rough estimates for two people, assuming cocktails or glasses of wine in the $16 to $22 range, which is where most of these bars sit.
| Date | Rough total for two, with tax and tip |
|---|---|
| One drink each | $40–$60 |
| Two drinks each | $80–$115 |
| Two drinks each plus shared food | $120–$180 |
| Wine and a full dinner | $150–$250 |
Happy hours and the beer-and-wine bars run cheaper. Many San Francisco bars also add a surcharge of around 4 to 6 percent for staff benefits or city mandates. It isn't a tip, so check the bottom of the menu before you tip on top.
