Buying a Christmas tree in DC can be a ten-minute errand or a whole Saturday outside. You can pick one up on Capitol Hill, browse a firefighters' charity lot in Navy Yard, or head into Maryland or Virginia and saw one down yourself. If you've been meaning to visit Evergreen Acres in Nokesville, this is the year: the farm is selling trees for the 36th and final time.

This guide covers the city lots, the garden centers and neighborhood sales just outside DC, six cut-your-own farms and the services that'll carry a tree into your living room. It's about real, cut trees, with a couple of pointers for artificial and living ones.

Tree season starts early here. Gaver Farm and Dreamland open November 21, the National Arboretum sale runs November 27 to December 6, and some city lots have opened the weekend before Thanksgiving. Where a seller hasn't posted its 2026 schedule yet, we've given last year's so you know what to expect, and we'll keep updating dates as Christmas gets closer.

Christmas Tree Lots and Garden Centers in Washington, DC

DC's tree shopping clusters on Capitol Hill, with a few charity lots worth crossing town for. The Salt Line and Wunder Garten double as a night out, and both turn up in our DC Christmas bars guide too. The Arboretum's holiday market and the rest of the city's markets are in our DC Christmas markets guide.

National Arboretum Holiday Tree Sale

National Arboretum Holiday Tree Sale

3501 New York Ave NE, Washington, DC 20002, USA

The easiest way to make tree shopping feel like an outing without leaving the District. Almost Heavenly brings pre-cut trees, wreaths and garlands to the grounds, and part of every sale goes back to the Friends of the National Arboretum. Go on December 5 if you can: the holiday market runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with local artisans and food trucks, and the tree sale overlaps from 11. You can also pre-order for home delivery or pickup. Details: November 27–29, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.; November 30–December 4, 2–7 p.m.; December 5–6, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Northeast DC.

Dan & Bryan Christmas Trees

Dan & Bryan Christmas Trees

3810 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016, USA

The name Northwest DC grew up with: formerly Sundback Trees, on the grounds of the Church of the Annunciation, selling Douglas and Fraser firs, wreaths, roping and stands. They grow trees too, and their West Virginia farm supplied the White House Blue Room tree in 2020. There's a second lot in Chevy Chase at 4600 Davidson Drive. Details: Usually opens the Saturday after Thanksgiving at 2 p.m. and stays open daily until sold out; the DC lot runs Monday–Friday 10 a.m.–9 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m.–9 p.m. 3810 Massachusetts Avenue NW.

Frager's Garden Center & Foliage

Frager's Garden Center & Foliage

1123 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, Washington, DC 20003, USA

The all-in-one Capitol Hill stop: buy the tree, then sort out the stand, lights and decorations before you get home and discover what's missing. Frager's sells fresh-cut trees and greenery, and the Foliage holiday shop next door adds decorations and artificial trees, so treat them as one trip. It's especially handy if this is your first real tree. Details: Monday–Saturday 8 a.m.–8 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m.–6 p.m. 1123 Pennsylvania Avenue SE; the garden entrance is off 12th Street SE by the Exxon station.

Agora Farms at Eastern Market

Agora Farms at Eastern Market

225 7th St SE, Washington, DC 20003, USA

The move when a tree is one part of your Saturday rather than the whole plan. Agora Farms is one of the market's farm vendors and sells Christmas trees alongside its usual produce, so you can do the food shopping and grab a tree on the way out. Look outside around 7th and C Streets SE, not in the hall. Details: Last year's tree sales ran November 30 to Christmas Eve, 7 a.m.–8 p.m. daily. 225 7th Street SE.

Ginkgo Gardens

Ginkgo Gardens

911 11th St SE, Washington, DC 20003, USA

A small Capitol Hill garden shop for anyone who'd rather buy from a neighbor than a big lot. Expect trees, wreaths, greenery, stands and decorations, at fair neighborhood prices. Details: Last year's hours were Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–7 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.–6 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m.–5 p.m. 911 11th Street SE; 202-543-5172.

The Salt Line Christmas Tree Lot

The Salt Line Christmas Tree Lot

79 Potomac Ave SE, Washington, DC 20003, USA

The most fun lot in the city. The Salt Line sets up on its Navy Yard patio by the water with Fraser and balsam firs from tabletop size up to 12 feet, and 100% of tree sales go to the DC Firefighters Burn Foundation. Every purchase has come with a free hot cocktail from the Winter Warmers menu, which is a hard perk to beat on a cold night. Details: Last year it opened November 22, Monday–Friday 4–8:30 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m.–8:30 p.m., until the trees ran out. 79 Potomac Avenue SE.

The Giving Tree Project at Wunder Garten

The Giving Tree Project at Wunder Garten

1101 1st St NE, Washington, DC 20002, USA

NoMa's neighborhood lot, running at Wunder Garten since 2019. It stocks Fraser, Douglas and balsam firs from tabletop size to 10 feet, staff help with wrapping and loading, and part of each sale supports the h3 Project's outreach to people experiencing homelessness. If you're buying tabletop, make sure it comes with a stand. Details: Last year it opened November 22, Monday–Friday 4–8 p.m. and weekends noon–7 p.m., closed Thanksgiving. 1101 First Street NE.

Christmas Tree Lots and Garden Centers in Maryland and Northern Virginia

If you're in the close-in suburbs, or have a car and want more choice, these are a short drive from the District. North Star and the Optimists are dedicated tree sales; the garden centers are better when you've got a longer holiday list.

North Star Christmas Trees

The Chevy Chase and Beltsville lots give you a free fresh cut, netting and help loading, and leashed dogs are welcome. Delivery comes in two versions: to your door or lobby, or brought inside and installed in your stand. Stands are extra. There's also a lot at the Fort Myer Post Exchange in Arlington, where you don't need a DoD ID to buy, though you'll go through Hatfield Gate with a photo ID. Details: Chevy Chase usually opens the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Monday–Thursday noon–9 p.m., Friday–Sunday 10 a.m.–9 p.m. Beltsville runs 10 a.m.–9 p.m. daily. Greenstreet Gardens

Greenstreet Gardens

1721 W Braddock Rd, Alexandria, VA 22302, USA

Almost Heavenly Christmas Trees at North Ridge

2911 Cameron Mills Rd, Alexandria, VA 22302, USA

Cut-Your-Own Christmas Tree Farms Near DC

None of the DC lots let you cut your own, so you'll need to drive for this. Four of these farms are in Maryland and two in Virginia. Fields can sell out before a farm's last day, so check its updates the morning you go. Evergreen Acres welcomes leashed dogs, but Gaver, Mayne's and Snickers Gap don't allow pets.

Butler's Orchard

Butler's Orchard

22222 Davis Mill Rd, Germantown, MD 20876, USA

The Germantown farm most Montgomery County families already know from strawberries and pumpkins, and the one farm here where you need a plan. Cutting has been by reservation with no walk-ins, for Douglas and Canaan firs of about 4–8 feet, and the booking includes Holiday Harvest Days in the farm park. There's a pre-cut lot too. Last year's cut-your-own price was $89.95 plus tax, with $5 per car. Details: Holiday season runs November 21–December 20; last year cutting ran Friday–Sunday. 22222 Davis Mill Road, Germantown.

Gaver Farm

Gaver Farm

5501 Detrick Rd, Mt Airy, MD 21771, USA

The safest all-around farm pick, with 60-plus acres of trees and a pre-cut area if enthusiasm for sawing fades. Cut-your-own prices are simple: white pine $65, Douglas and Canaan firs $85 (up to 9 feet) and Colorado blue spruce $85 (up to 6 feet), plus Maryland sales tax. Saws, carts, shaking, baling, pin-stand drilling and string are all free, and the hot cider donuts are a good reason to linger. Details: November 21–December 23, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; closed Thanksgiving. Free hayrides November 27–29 and December 5–6, weather permitting. 5501 Detrick Road, Mount Airy.

Mayne's Tree Farm

Mayne's Tree Farm

3420 Buckeystown Pike, Buckeystown, MD 21717, USA

A family farm in Frederick County that's been selling trees since the 1970s, and a straightforward countryside outing without much of a production. Cut your own white pine, Douglas, Fraser, Canaan or concolor fir, or take a pre-cut Fraser or Douglas if you'd rather not. Hayrides run on weekends. Details: Usually from the Friday after Thanksgiving, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. daily, until the trees run out. 3420 Buckeystown Pike, Buckeystown; 301-662-4320.

Dreamland Christmas Tree Farm

Dreamland Christmas Tree Farm

2700 Sumantown Rd, Middletown, MD 21769, USA

The one for families who want the tree to be part of a bigger afternoon. Besides the fields and a pre-cut section there's a Christmas shop, café, playground, fires to warm up by and pens with pheasants and turkeys. Get the day right, though: Tuesday through Thursday evenings are pre-cut and shop only. Details: November 21–Christmas Eve, closed Mondays and Thanksgiving. Tuesday–Thursday 5–8 p.m.; Friday noon–7 p.m. (Black Friday 10 a.m.–7 p.m.), with fields closing at 5; weekends 9 a.m.–5 p.m. 2700 Sumantown Road, Middletown.

Snickers Gap Tree Farm

Snickers Gap Tree Farm

34350 Williams Gap Rd, Round Hill, VA 20141, USA

The best setting of the six: 37,000 hand-shaped Douglas firs and Colorado blue spruce on a Blue Ridge hillside looking over the Loudoun Valley, with thousands over 10 feet if you've got the ceiling for it. Everything up to 7 feet is one price. They'll lend you a saw and rope, then shake and bale your tree, but staff don't tie trees to cars, so bring straps. A tarp makes the haul back much easier, and an 11-foot spruce takes three or four people. Details: Opens November 27; Thanksgiving weekend 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m., then weekdays 1–5:30 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Don't count on Christmas week: the last two seasons ended December 14. 34350 Williams Gap Road, Round Hill.

Evergreen Acres

Evergreen Acres

12801 Hazelwood Dr, Nokesville, VA 20181, USA

Go this year, because there won't be another. The Nokesville farm is selling trees for the 36th and final time, with about 3,000 white pines from 5 to 15 feet and 400 Norway spruce from 7 to 10 feet. White pine is $110 and Norway spruce is $160, both with tax included. There's also a cheaper third field at $50, and clearance white pines that drop from $80 on opening weekend to $40 on the last day. Arrive early or late in the afternoon to miss the 10:30–2:30 rush. No reservations; leashed dogs welcome. Details: November 27–December 20. Weekends and November 27 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; weekdays 1–4:30 p.m. 12801 Hazelwood Drive, Nokesville.

Before You Buy a Christmas Tree in DC

  • Measure first. Check the ceiling, the width of the room and the stair turn or elevator, and remember the stand and topper add height.
  • Compare the whole bill. Add tax, a stand, delivery or gas, and setup. A farm tree isn't automatically cheaper once you've counted the drive.
  • Get it into water fast. Ask for a fresh cut, use a stand that holds plenty of plain water and keep it topped up, away from radiators and vents.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to buy a Christmas tree in DC?
Thanksgiving weekend through the first week of December gives you the most choice. Gaver and Dreamland open November 21, and some city lots start around the same time. Don't count on a late bargain: Snickers Gap's last two seasons ended December 14, and popular lots can sell out.
Where can I cut my own Christmas tree near DC?
Butler's Orchard, Gaver Farm, Mayne's and Dreamland in Maryland, and Snickers Gap and Evergreen Acres in Virginia. You can't cut your own inside the District. Butler's has required reservations; the others have taken walk-ins.
Can I buy a Christmas tree in DC without a car?
Yes. Almost Heavenly, North Star and Mike's Hauling Service all deliver and can set the tree up inside. If you live near a lot, a small tree is walkable, but work out how you'll carry it first.
When is the National Arboretum Christmas tree sale?
November 27 to December 6, 2026, with a holiday market on December 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can also pre-order for home delivery or pickup.
Are there school and scout tree sales in DC?
Yes, and they're usually short. Cleveland Elementary's sale runs November 27–29 at Sandlot Uptown. Brent and Miner elementaries and the Capitol Hill scouts held early-December sales last year, and John Eaton Elementary runs one too, so watch for their 2026 dates.
Where can I buy an artificial or living Christmas tree?
Foliage by Frager's on Capitol Hill carries artificial trees alongside fresh ones. Nalls Produce in Franconia stocks small live trees you can plant afterward; a cut tree can't be replanted.
How do I get rid of a Christmas tree in DC?
DC Public Works collects trees curbside each winter, with last season's pickup running in January and February. Take off the lights, decorations and stand, and don't bag it. If you're in an apartment, ask your building manager, or book removal when you order delivery from Almost Heavenly.
