Seeing Santa around Washington can mean 15 minutes in a decorated hotel suite, a free selfie in a movie theater lobby or a morning on a historic streetcar. The right pick depends on what your family actually wants: a few sweet minutes with Santa, a photo for the grandparents or a whole day out.
The Fairmont Santa Suite is our first choice for a DC visit that feels like an occasion without taking over the day. Mosaic is our pick for free photos on your own phone, and Bass Pro and Cabela's give you a free printed 4x6. The Willard is the splurge meal and Hard Rock is the easy one. If your kids would rather ride something than pose, go with Holly TrolleyFest or The Polar Express in Baltimore.
This guide covers 32 Santa visits across DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland, including a few favorites that haven't announced their 2026 plans yet. All dates are for 2026 unless we say otherwise, and we'll keep updating it as more details come in.

Where to See Santa in Washington, DC
DC does Santa best as an occasion: a hotel suite, a ballroom breakfast, a night on the waterfront. Most of these need booking ahead. Making a day of it? Our guide to DC restaurants that go all out for Christmas has the rest of your plan. The Wharf's boat parade and Enchant are in our DC Christmas lights guide, and Enchant's skating trail is in our DC ice skating guide.

Fairmont Santa Suite
2401 M St NW, Washington, DC 20037, USA
A decorated hotel suite gives this visit a real sense of occasion, and the 15-minute slot keeps it from swallowing your afternoon. Kids share their lists, you take the pictures yourself, and nobody's selling you a photo package. It's our first pick if you want Santa to be the main event. Details: Saturdays and Sundays, December 5–20, 11:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. $12 per person, up to 10 people per visit, with proceeds going to Horton's Kids. Book a Santa Suite time, not a hotel room. The hotel's Christmas Day brunch with Santa is a separate booking: December 25, 11 a.m.–2 p.m., $160 adults, $40 ages 5–12, free under 5, before alcohol, tax and gratuity.

Framebridge Union Market
1262 4th St NE, Washington, DC 20002, USA
Go here when the finished picture matters as much as the visit. These are quick portrait appointments, so have everyone dressed and ready, and think holiday cards or a gift for the grandparents. Digital images come with a frame purchase, so skip it if you only want a free photo. Details: November 22 and December 5, 9:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. Appointments run about five minutes with a maximum of two children; book a second slot for more kids. Choose the Santa session, not the store's separate pet portrait event.

Santa at The Wharf
101 District Square SW, Washington, DC 20024, USA
The Holiday Boat Parade & Party is the pick for families who want boats, lights and fireworks along with Santa. Photos with Santa are in The Grove, and the whole evening is loud, crowded and fun, so don't expect a quiet portrait. Do Santa first, then find your spot on the water before the boats arrive. Details: Saturday, December 5. Activities start at 5 p.m., boats arrive at 7 and fireworks go off around 8. Free, with no tickets needed. Chairs, coolers, tripods and selfie sticks aren't allowed, and the garages fill fast, so take Metro to Waterfront if you can.

Arena Stage
1101 6th St SW, Washington, DC 20024, USA
Arena's free Santa photo session makes a good indoor afternoon in Southwest, and it lines up with Step Afrika!'s Magical Musical Holiday Step Show. The photos and the show are separate, so pair them only if the show's part of your plan. Details: December 20, 2:30–5 p.m., at the Mead Center for American Theater. Santa photos are complimentary, and show tickets cost extra.

Breakfast with Santa at the Willard
1401 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20004, USA
This is the grand one: a Grand Ballroom buffet with a kids' buffet, a Champagne bar for the adults, cookie decorating, painting and balloon twisting, with Santa making visits through the morning. We'd save it for a family gathering where the adults want the meal to feel special too. It sold out last year, so book early. Details: Sunday, December 6, with seatings at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. $165 adults, $65 ages 5–12, plus a 25% service charge and sales tax. Book through the hotel's holiday team at 202-637-7487.

Santa Brunch at CUT D.C.
1050 31st St NW, Washington, DC 20007, USA
CUT suits families who'd rather sit down to a proper brunch than wait in a photo line. Each table gets a shared spread and picks an entrée, there's a holiday dessert display, and Santa and Mrs. Claus do story time and professional photo opportunities. Book a table inside their hours, since the earliest seating comes before Santa does. Details: Selected dates December 6–20. Brunch runs 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m., and Santa and Mrs. Claus are there noon–3 p.m. $95 per person, $70 for kids 10 and under. Ask for the Santa Brunch, not regular weekend brunch.

Waldorf Astoria Winter Wonderland Family Brunch
1100 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20004, USA
This is the most activity-packed of the downtown hotel meals. Kids get a visit from Santa, professional keepsake portraits, gingerbread decorating with the pastry chefs, letters to the North Pole, face painting and a moon bounce, while the adults work through the carving stations and the holiday waffle workshop. Choose it for a shared family party, not a quick photo. Details: December 12, 11 a.m.–2 p.m. Book the Family Brunch experience on OpenTable, not a regular Peacock Alley table. Prices are shown at booking.

Breakfast with Santa at Hard Rock Cafe
999 E St NW, Washington, DC 20004, USA
Hard Rock is the casual alternative to a ballroom brunch. Breakfast, a craft and a Santa photo keep the morning simple, and it's easy to reach if you're already downtown. We'd pick it when you want the meal without the dress code. Details: December 19, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. $65.30 adults, $44.70 kids 3 and up, and kids under 2 are free. Kids' tickets include a photo with Santa. Buy the Breakfast with Santa ticket, not a regular restaurant booking.

Enchant Christmas at Nationals Park
1500 South Capitol St SE, Washington, DC 20003, USA
Enchant is back at Nats Park for the first time since 2023, and it's the choice when you want a whole evening, not just a picture. This year's light maze is Night of the Nutcrackers, with a skating trail, a snow slide, a holiday village and visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus around it. Details: November 20–December 27, closed Thanksgiving. Hours are Tuesday–Wednesday 5:30–7:30 p.m., Thursday 5:30–8:30 p.m., Friday–Saturday 4:30–9:30 p.m. and Sunday 4:30–7:30 p.m., with Sundays running to 9:30 p.m. from December 20. Tickets are $10–$39. Santa's own hours and photo pricing are still to come.

Jingle Block Rock
Washington, DC 20024, USA
This neighborhood street party around the Southwest Duck Pond is a fun free stop on a weeknight, with pictures with Santa, doughnut decorating, a Step Afrika! meet-and-greet and stilt walkers. Come for the party, and treat the Santa picture as one part of it. Details: December 2, 5–7 p.m., on 4th Street SW near Waterfront Metro. Free.

GoGo Santa at Sycamore & Oak
1110 Oak Dr SE Ste 9, Washington, DC 20032, USA
Keep this one on the calendar for a holiday party in Southeast DC with go-go music, food, drinks and plenty of community spirit. It's still at the save-the-date stage, so the full program will tell you what the Santa part looks like. Details: December 12, noon–5 p.m., 1110 Oak Drive SE. Pricing, registration and Santa details are still to come.

Teddy Bear Tea at Four Seasons
2800 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20007, USA
The hotel's Teddy Bear Tea is one to watch for a dressed-up family outing in Georgetown. Its 2026 Christmas program hasn't been announced yet, and a regular afternoon tea isn't the same event. Details: 2026 dates and prices are still to come.

Where to See Santa in Northern Virginia
Northern Virginia has the region's best free options, plus the long-running mall visits and a very good Old Town waterfront calendar. Mosaic and Fairfax City are the ones to start with if you'd rather not pay for a photo. Both also host holiday markets, covered in our DC Christmas markets guide.

Mosaic
2911 District Ave, Fairfax, VA 22031, USA
Mosaic is our pick for a straightforward free Santa photo. He's inside the Angelika Film Center lobby, so nobody has to pose out in the cold, and there's no package to buy. You'll wait in a first-come line instead of booking a slot, so bring a charged phone and someone to take the picture. Details: November 27, 5:30–8 p.m., then November 28–29 and December 5, 12 and 19, 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Free, with no reservations and no photographer. Pets aren't allowed.

Tysons Corner Center
1961 Chain Bridge Rd, Tysons, VA 22102, USA
Tysons is the classic mall visit, and it runs longer than almost anything else on this list. Meeting Santa is free, and you only pay if you want the professional photos. Santa's on Level 1 near Wasabi, and booking a time cuts down the wait. Details: November 6–December 24, closed Thanksgiving. Hours are 2–7 p.m. on weekdays November 9–25, then 11 a.m.–7 p.m. on weekdays from November 28. Saturdays are 10 a.m.–8 p.m., and Sundays are noon–6 p.m. through November 22, then 11 a.m.–7 p.m. Black Friday is 10 a.m.–8 p.m. and Christmas Eve is 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and Santa takes breaks during the day. Pet Nights are Mondays, November 9–December 14.

Fairfax City Holiday Market
10415 North St, Fairfax, VA 22030, USA
This is the easiest free Santa stop for anyone with a dog. The market brings 30-plus local vendors and live entertainment to Old Town Square, with a selfie-style Santa session one weekend and a pet session the next. Details: Photos with Santa are December 6, 1–4 p.m. Paws and Claus is December 13, 1–4 p.m., and other animal friends are welcome too. Both are free. Bring your own camera.

Fashion Centre at Pentagon City
1100 S Hayes St, Arlington, VA 22202, USA
If you want a standard mall portrait without driving far from central DC, this is the one. It's a focused photo stop, not a holiday production, and booking ahead saves you from turning up on a day Santa's off. Details: November 14–December 24, except November 16–19 and Thanksgiving. Santa doesn't work every mall hour, so choose a time from the booking calendar, where photo packages are priced.

Burke Lake Winter Wonderland
7315 Ox Rd, Fairfax Station, VA 22039, USA
Burke Lake works best for kids who'd love the train and carousel even without Santa. The photo becomes one stop in a full park day with crafts and holiday activities, so dress for being outside. The holiday train is a miniature one, which is exactly right for little kids. Details: December 5–6, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. $20 online or $25 at the door if tickets remain. Presales end the Thursday before.

Reston Holiday Parade
11900 Market St, Reston, VA 20190, USA
Reston is for families who want the parade as much as Santa. Start with the morning procession at Reston Town Center, then stay for visits and photos with Santa. The tree lighting doesn't come until the evening, so decide ahead of time whether you're staying all day. Details: November 27. The free parade runs 11 a.m.–noon, Santa visits and photos follow, and the tree lighting is at 6 p.m.

Alexandria Holiday Tree Lighting
1A Prince St, Alexandria, VA 22314, USA
This is a community tree lighting with Santa as part of the celebration, and it has a new home this year. Head to Waterfront Park, not Market Square. It's a cheerful early-season evening, though it won't feel like a one-on-one visit with Santa. Details: November 21, 6–8 p.m. Free. Parking's limited in Old Town during the City Hall renovation, so take Metro to King Street and hop on the free King Street Trolley.

Torpedo Factory Holiday Festival
105 N Union St, Alexandria, VA 22314, USA
In 2025, Santa pulled up to the Alexandria waterfront on a fireboat, then met families inside the art center with free timed tickets. It's one of the best Santa arrivals in the region and falls on the same day as Alexandria's boat parade, December 5. The 2026 festival details are still to come. Details: Free timed tickets were limited in past seasons. The Holiday Boat Parade of Lights is December 5, 5:30–8 p.m., with dockside activities from 2 p.m.

Waterskiing Santa
0 Cameron St, Alexandria, VA 22314, USA
Yes, Santa really does waterski down the Potomac on Christmas Eve. It's a show first, so come for the spectacle and take your photos from the shore. Details: December 24 on the Old Town waterfront, free to watch. The 2026 start time is still to come.

Fair Oaks Mall
11750 Fair Oaks Mall, Fairfax, VA 22033, USA
Santa's arrival at the mall's holiday market is a fun kickoff if you're nearby, and it's a separate thing from the regular photo schedule. Details: Santa arrives November 14 at 5 p.m. Regular photo appointments are on the mall's calendar.
Where to book
Where to See Santa in Maryland
Maryland has the region's dedicated sensory-friendly session, its biggest holiday resort and the best Santa outing for kids who love streetcars.

Westfield Montgomery
7101 Democracy Blvd, Bethesda, MD 20817, USA
This is the pick for families who need a sensory-friendly visit. Santa Cares is a calm session before the regular crowds, built for children and families with special needs. The standard portrait calendar runs right through Christmas Eve if that suits you better. Details: Regular photos are November 20–December 24 in Macy's Court on Level 1. Santa Cares is Sunday, December 6, 8:30–9:30 a.m., and needs its own reservation. Photo packages are priced at booking.

Bethesda Winter Wonderland
7898 Woodmont Ave #7800, Bethesda, MD 20814, USA
Bethesda feels like a neighborhood celebration, with a holiday market and a casual outdoor Santa stop. Come for the market at noon if you like, but Santa doesn't arrive until mid-afternoon. Details: December 5, noon–4 p.m., on Norfolk and Cordell Avenues, with Santa 2–4 p.m. Free. Bring a new toy for Toys for Tots.

Santa at Gaylord National
201 Waterfront St, Oxon Hill, MD 20745, USA
Gaylord makes sense when Santa is one part of a big National Harbor holiday day. He's in Christmas Village, and meeting him here requires a photo package, so go elsewhere for a free hello. The package is also separate from ICE! tickets and hotel stays. Details: November 14–December 24. Choose a session online. Personal photos aren't allowed, and several guests can appear in one package.

Holly TrolleyFest
1313 Bonifant Rd, Colesville, MD 20905, USA
For kids who love anything on rails, this beats a mall portrait easily. You ride a historic streetcar along the museum's mile-long woodland line, where Santa and Mrs. Claus are waiting, and there's a garden railway, crafts and hot chocolate back at the museum. Details: Saturdays and Sundays from November 28, 10:30 a.m.–5 p.m. $15 per person, and reservations are required. Museum memberships and Family & Friends passes don't apply. Tickets go on sale soon.

Mall at Prince George's
3500 East-West Hwy, Hyattsville, MD 20782, USA
The mall in Hyattsville has offered a Black Santa for decades, and families travel for it. Its photo set was in Macy's Court last season. 2026 dates haven't been posted yet, so watch the booking page. Details: Last season ran November 14–December 24, with photo packages sold at booking.

Santa Fly-In at College Park Aviation Museum
1985 Corporal Frank Scott Dr, College Park, MD 20740, USA
An aviation-loving kid won't forget watching Santa land at the world's oldest continuously operating airport. The 2025 event added crafts and photos with an English- and Spanish-speaking Santa, and arrival depends on the weather. Details: The 2026 date is still to come. Tickets were $13, or $10 for county residents, in 2025, and photo slots needed registration.

The Capital Wheel
141 American Way, Oxon Hill, MD 20745, USA
Santa photos with a ride on the National Harbor wheel sound like a fun add-on to a Gaylord day. The 2026 calendar is still settling, so wait for the photo dates before buying a wheel ticket. Details: 2026 dates and pricing are still to come.
Where to book
Santa Visits Worth the Drive
These take more of a commitment, so make each one the main event of your day.

Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's
7000 Arundel Mills Cir Suite E-2, Hanover, MD 21076, USA
A free printed 4x6 with no package to buy is a rare thing, and Santa's Wonderland delivers it at both Hanover and Gainesville. You also get a shareable video. Pick whichever store is closer, book a slot, and skip the upgrades if you don't want them. Details: November 8–December 24. Free reservations open seven days ahead, so choose your store and date on the booking page. Bass Pro Shops is at Arundel Mills in Hanover, and Cabela's is in Gainesville.

The Santa Experience at Salamander
500 N Pendleton St, Middleburg, VA 20117, USA
Salamander Middleburg turns the visit into a small countryside outing: a wagon ride to Santa's Workshop, about 10 minutes with Santa, a photo, a stuffed animal for the kids and s'mores by the fire. It's a real group purchase, so it's best when grandparents or cousins are coming too. Details: November 27–29 and December 6, 12, 13, 18, 20, 22, 23 and 24. From $285 for up to eight people, and sales are final. Arrive 15 minutes before your wagon, and dress for time outdoors and in a barn. This is the Middleburg resort, not Salamander Washington DC.

The Polar Express in Baltimore
901 W Pratt St, Baltimore, MD 21223, USA
Make this the whole day. The performance, train ride and North Pole activities add up to a much bigger production than a Santa stop, with Santa woven into the story. Pajamas are very much encouraged. Details: November 28–29; December 5–6, 12–13 and 19–22. Nonmember Bronze tickets start at $60 adults and $50 kids on November 28–29, and later dates and higher classes cost more. The experience runs about two hours in all. Use the event entrance off Arlington Street, with parking at 1100 James Street, not the main museum entrance on West Pratt.

Tips for Seeing Santa in the DC Area
- Book as soon as slots open. Bass Pro and Cabela's release visits seven days ahead, and the hotel meals fill first.
- Watch out for December 5. The Wharf, Alexandria's boat parade, Bethesda, Burke Lake, Mosaic and the Fairmont all have Santa events that Saturday. Pick one and leave room to enjoy it.
- Skip the lap if it's not working. A wave or a quick family photo beside Santa counts, and a hesitant kid will have a better time without the pressure.
