A good night out in your 30s isn't necessarily a quiet one. Some nights you want a comfortable seat and a real conversation. Others you want to meet people, hear a great band, or dance until the lights come up. The trick is picking a bar that fits the evening, so you're not spending half of it wishing you were somewhere else.
This guide covers 36 Nashville bars for all of those moods, organized by area. There are polished cocktail rooms, easygoing places to become a regular, patios for catching up with friends, and music rooms that deserve more than a quick stop.
We're not promising a room full of thirtysomethings. We're recommending places where the drinks, the setting and the way the night unfolds give you a good reason to be there.

East Nashville Bars: Cocktails, Neighborhood Spots and Honky-Tonks
Most of this list lives east of the river. East Nashville and Inglewood have the city's deepest bench of neighborhood bars, cocktail rooms and music spots, most of them a short ride apart along Gallatin, Woodland and Five Points. One Madison honky-tonk closes out the section for nights built around the band.

Martha My Dear
2503 Gallatin Ave, Nashville, TN 37206, USA
When someone says "good drinks, but nothing too involved," send them here. The cocktails have some imagination, there's a pool table, and the room works as well for a date as for an ordinary catch-up with friends. Plan: Start early. The happy-hour menu makes it an easy first stop, and it's comfortable enough that you may not leave.

Attaboy
8 Mcferrin Ave, Nashville, TN 37206, USA
There's no menu to read. You tell the bartender what you like and the drink comes out of the conversation, so Attaboy is at its best when the company is the point of the night. Plan: It's first come, first served, with a firm limit of six per party. Two to four people is the sweet spot, and it pays to be relaxed about the wait.

The Fox Bar & Cocktail Club
2905B Gallatin Pike, Nashville, TN 37216, USA
The Fox makes a cocktail and a snack feel like a full evening instead of a holding pattern before dinner. The room is intimate, the drinks are inventive and the bar food is thoughtful. Plan: Reserve a table for a date or any night when getting seated matters. It suits a small group better than a loosely organized birthday crowd.

Chopper
1100 B Stratton Ave, Nashville, TN 37206, USA
Proof that a serious cocktail bar doesn't have to act serious. The robot-filled tropical room gives the night personality, and the drinks give you a reason to stay past the first photo. Plan: No reservations, so come early if you want to sit together. Food comes from the Maiz de la Vida truck and is ordered separately. Closed Mondays.

Pearl Diver
1008 Gallatin Ave, Nashville, TN 37206, USA
Vacation energy on an ordinary night. Booths, a patio and a long tropical drinks list give a group plenty of ways to settle in, and the new owners have added a tropical barbecue menu. Good for a celebration or a double date that wants festive without a club. Plan: Mostly walk-in. For a group, ask about booth and cabana options rather than hoping everyone fits at the bar.

Urban Cowboy Public House
103 N 16th St, Nashville, TN 37206, USA
The bar behind the East Nashville hotel is easy to make a whole night of. Cocktails, an inviting backyard and Roberta's pizza turn one drink into a relaxed date or group hang. Plan: It's open to the public and doesn't take reservations.

Lakeside Lounge
921 Woodland St, Nashville, TN 37206, USA
For nights when nobody wants to make a decision. Drinks, food and pool give the evening just enough shape, whether it's a few friends, an easy date or a solo stop. Plan: Earlier is better for conversation. The kitchen runs late, which helps when one drink turns into several.

Schulman's
1201 Porter Rd, Nashville, TN 37206, USA
Booths, tavern food, a patio and a bar where a martini makes as much sense as a beer. It has everything a regular spot needs and doesn't try to be more. Plan: Grab an early booth for a long catch-up. This is a home base, not an occasion.

Mickey's Tavern
2907 Gallatin Pike, Nashville, TN 37216, USA
Skip the cocktail menu and play something instead. Pool, foosball, darts and a jukebox keep things moving between conversations. Plan: It's next door to The Fox, which makes it a natural second stop after something more polished. Smoking isn't allowed inside but is on the covered deck.

Village Pub & Beer Garden
1308 McGavock Pk, Nashville, TN 37216, USA
Beer, mules, pub food and a porch, for nights when the real plan is just seeing your friends. Plan: It's 21 and over, outdoors included. Smoking is allowed on the patio, so sit inside if that bothers you.

The Authentique
925 Gallatin Ave #103, Nashville, TN 37206, USA
Here the wine is the point, not an afterthought. French bottles and savory crêpes make a long sit-down feel like the obvious move. Plan: Walk-ins are welcome, but book Friday or Saturday if settling in together matters.

Rice Vice
3109 Ambrose Ave, Nashville, TN 37207, USA
Proper Saké brews on site, which makes this a real sake bar rather than a cocktail bar with a sake list. You don't need to know much going in, and working through it together is half the fun. Plan: It's off East Trinity Lane, so treat it as its own trip rather than a Five Points walk. Think drinks and snacks, not dinner.

Rosemary & Beauty Queen
1102 Forest Ave, Nashville, TN 37206, USA
More momentum than a seated lounge. The house-bar setup and outdoor space give a group room to spread out, which makes it a strong meeting point for a celebration. Plan: Parties of seven to 25 can request a reservation. Use it for anything planned.

The Lipstick Lounge
1400 Woodland St, Nashville, TN 37206, USA
A longtime lesbian-owned bar with a real community around it. Karaoke gives the night a shared focus, and the patio and food give you a break from the microphone. Plan: Check the entertainment schedule and get on the karaoke list early if you plan to sing.

Skinny Dennis
2635 Gallatin Pike, Nashville, TN 37216, USA
The Brooklyn honky-tonk's Nashville outpost books serious country and roots acts in a dive-bar room built around a big horseshoe bar. It's the easiest way to get a two-stepping night without going downtown. Plan: Check the lineup. Most nights are free, some shows are ticketed, and seating is generally first come, first served.

Dee's Country Cocktail Lounge
102 E Palestine Ave, Madison, TN 37115, USA
A 1970s-style room with live music, pool, darts and outdoor space. For people who pick a night by the lineup, it's a complete evening. Plan: Choose your night by the act and check for tickets or a cover. Madison is a separate trip from downtown, so sort out a ride.

Germantown and Downtown Nashville Bars: Dressed-Up Drinks and Live Music
Germantown covers the dressed-up end of the list. Downtown and Printers Alley are for a band or a good cocktail, with one Broadway pick for when traditional country is the point. For the full Broadway rundown, see our guide to the best honky-tonks and bars on Broadway.

Le Loup
1400 Adams St, Nashville, TN 37208, USA
Up a staircase from The Optimist, Le Loup is worth the trip on its own. A velvet-and-marble room, serious cocktails and raw-bar seafood make it right for an anniversary or drinks with friends who like a sense of occasion. Plan: Build the evening around it rather than dropping in. It's currently open Thursday through Saturday evenings.

Mother's Ruin
1239 6th Ave N, Nashville, TN 37208, USA
Half cocktail bar, half neighborhood hangout. Good drinks, food and a room that gets livelier as the night goes on make it easy for friends or a casual date with no set ending. Plan: Regular seating is walk-in only. Come early to talk, later for more energy.

Barrel Proof
1010 4th Ave N, Nashville, TN 37219, USA
A deep whiskey selection without the formality of a tasting. Pull up a bar seat, ask for a recommendation and let the conversation carry the night. Plan: Get to the bar early, before the seats fill.

Monday Night Preservation Co.
1308 Adams St, Nashville, TN 37208, USA
Beer, cocktails, wine and plenty of outdoor seating make this the low-stress pick when your group can't agree on what to drink. Plan: Food is mostly snacks, and outside food is welcome. It's family-friendly by day, so evenings are the better bet for an adults' night.

Bar Roza
211 Arcade Alley, Nashville, TN 37219, USA
Aperitivo-style drinks and shared plates in a small room off the Arcade. The night stays about your company, not a stage or a rooftop crowd. Plan: Use it as a first stop before music in Printers Alley, a short walk away, or settle in for drinks and bites.

Four Walls
The Joseph, a Luxury Collection Hotel, 401 Korean Veterans Blvd Floor 2, Nashville, TN 37203, USA
A small, design-heavy cocktail bar tucked inside The Joseph hotel. It's the pick for a date or a nightcap when you're happy to spend a bit more for the setting. Plan: Take the dedicated elevator from the hotel lobby. Reserve when getting seated matters, and keep the group to a handful.

Robert's Western World
416 Broadway # B, Nashville, TN 37203, USA
Our Broadway pick when you want traditional country played well, not the biggest building with the most famous name on it. Plan: Afternoons and early evenings give you more room. Stay for a full set and tip the band.

Skull's Rainbow Room
222 Printers Alley, Nashville, TN 37219, USA
Live jazz, dinner and burlesque on select nights make Skull's a planned night out rather than a bar stop. Plan: Dinner reservations and burlesque packages are booked separately, so pick the experience you want. Late-night cover charges can apply.

Bourbon Street Blues & Boogie Bar
220 Printers Alley, Nashville, TN 37201, USA
For when the group wants a band and some noise. Blues and soul on stage plus Cajun and Creole food mean you can stay for the whole night. Plan: Reserve seating if sitting together matters. Reservation charges are separate from the cover, and a two-drink minimum applies.
Gulch, Edgehill and Wedgewood-Houston Bars: Cocktails, Jazz and Dancing
This stretch south of downtown has two very different nights in it: serious cocktails, jazz and a rooftop in the Gulch, and a walkable run of bars on Houston Street in Wedgewood-Houston.

The Patterson House
700 8th Ave S Fifth Floor, Nashville, TN 37203, USA
One of Nashville's defining cocktail bars, now on the top floor of the Bill Voorhees Building. Bring a date or a small group that wants the drinks to be the whole point. Plan: Book ahead on weekends, though walk-ins are welcome. The entrance is on Fogg Street behind the building.

Rudy's Jazz Room
809 Gleaves St, Nashville, TN 37203, USA
Give the night a clear purpose: pick a show, order cocktails and New Orleans-inspired food, and actually listen to the band. Plan: Book the specific show and seating. A dinner-table reservation doesn't include admission.

L.A. Jackson
401 11th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37203, USA
Skyline views, cocktails, shareable food and DJs. This is the scene-forward pick for a birthday or a night out that wants to feel like one. Plan: Go early for the view and more room. General seating is first come, first served, and a limited number of tables for up to eight can be reserved Thursday through Sunday.

Old Glory
1200 Villa Pl Unit 103, Nashville, TN 37212, USA
A former boiler room gives Old Glory a character no rooftop can fake. It's a memorable first drink that sets up the rest of the night. Plan: Look for the golden-triangle entrance off Edgehill Avenue. Check the event calendar if you're hoping to talk.

Bastion's Big Bar
434 Houston St Ste 110, Nashville, TN 37203, USA
An easy start to a Houston Street night: good cocktails, nachos and a relaxed room that suits a casual date or a group of friends. Plan: Head to the Big Bar side, where seating is first come, first served.

Never Never
413 Houston St, Nashville, TN 37203, USA
A former welding shop with a patio, for a night that feels loose rather than planned. Plan: Come earlier to catch up and check the event calendar. Bastion and Flamingo are steps away.

Flamingo Cocktail Club
509 Houston St, Nashville, TN 37203, USA
A night out in your 30s doesn't have to mean armchairs. DJs, a dance floor and a dressed-up crowd make this the place to actually dance. Plan: Check the calendar and any event tickets before you go. Friday and Saturday have a dress-up expectation. The entrance is around the side of the building, at the pink rear.
West Nashville, Green Hills and Melrose: Neighborhood Bars for an Ordinary Good Night
These are spread out enough that each one is its own plan, which suits nights when you'd rather settle in somewhere than bar-hop.

Otto's
4210 Charlotte Ave, Nashville, TN 37209, USA
Thoughtful cocktails, draft beer and approachable food. It's the west-side bar for after-work drinks, a casual date or just seeing a friend. Plan: Come for happy hour if you're watching the bill. It's an easy spontaneous pick on this side of town.

The Centennial
5115 Centennial Blvd, Nashville, TN 37209, USA
A neighborhood bar, a drink and something to eat, for nights when nobody wants anything more complicated. Plan: Despite the name, it's in The Nations, nowhere near Centennial Park.

The GreenHouse Bar
2211 Bandywood Dr, Nashville, TN 37215, USA
Drinks inside an actual plant-filled greenhouse. It turns a regular night into a small occasion without becoming a formal cocktail outing. Plan: Seating is first come, first served. It's in Green Hills, so make it the destination rather than a stop on the way.

Melrose Billiard Parlor
2600 8th Ave S #108, Nashville, TN 37204, USA
A basement bar with pool, ping-pong and other games, for a group that wants something to do besides stand around holding drinks. Plan: Come early if you need a table. Choose it for the games, not for polished cocktails.
Three Nashville Nights We'd Actually Plan
A cocktail date that doesn't end too formally. Start at The Fox, then walk next door to Mickey's Tavern. You get a considered drink first and pool, a jukebox and a casual second round after.
Wedgewood-Houston with an optional dance floor. Start with drinks and nachos at Bastion's Big Bar. Move on to Never Never for a social stop, or to Flamingo if there's an event you want to dance to. All three are on Houston Street.
Downtown built around music. Open with a drink at Bar Roza, then pick Skull's Rainbow Room or Bourbon Street Blues & Boogie Bar for the main event. Choose one show and commit to it rather than squeezing both in. If the night runs long, our late-night food guide has you covered.
Two more for specific nights: our first-date bars guide for when the company is new, and the bachelorette party guide for when it's a big group. Start the day with our best brunches in Nashville.
