The group chat has agreed on a date. Now comes the hard part: finding a bar that can fit everyone without splitting you across the room, insisting on a three-course dinner or turning a casual birthday into a full venue hire.

The best bars for large groups in London aren't always the biggest. They're the places where you can reserve the right kind of space, get food without running a military operation and settle into the night you had in mind. Sometimes that's a few tables in a beer hall. Sometimes it's a private cocktail room, a railway arch with its own sound system or a pub with its own arcade.

We've organized these by area, because in a city this size that's usually the first question. Start with the table for sizes and booking routes, then use the cards for what each bar is like and the rules worth knowing before the invitations go out.

Central, North and West London

The center has the beer hall, the wine arches and the office-night options. King's Cross is the easy meeting point when friends are coming from all over, and Paddington and West Brompton cover the west.

Albert's Schloss Soho

Albert's Schloss Soho

20-24 Shaftesbury Ave, London W1D 7EU, UK

A German beer hall on Shaftesbury Avenue with Alpine food and live shows Monday to Saturday. Big groups book through the inquiry form, and most dining tables have no stage view. It's over-21s from 6pm, Friday to Sunday, with no fancy dress or large single-sex parties.

The Winemakers Club

The Winemakers Club

41a Farringdon St, London EC4A 4AN, UK

The vaulted arches make it feel like an occasion without balloons or a DJ, so start here for a wine-loving birthday or a long reunion. There's no hire fee, just a minimum spend: from £350 for 20 in the Tasting Room or £750 for 40 in the Half Arch.

Vagabond Monument

Vagabond Monument

51 Gracechurch St, London EC3V 0EH, UK

Everyone pours their own from more than 100 wines, so nobody has to agree on a bottle, and there's a craft-beer wall for everyone else. Plan on one wine card per five to ten guests. Food is shared and made for standing, not a sit-down dinner.

Clays, The City

Clays, The City

55 Moorgate, London EC2R 6LL, UK

Virtual clay-target shooting and cocktails, three minutes from Moorgate station, so an office night has a starting point without anyone caring who wins. The Hide is a private room for up to 30 with a self-serve bar and one four-player peg, so plan on rotations. Saturdays and The Hide are always 18+.

The Racketeer

The Racketeer

105 King's Cross Rd, London WC1X 9LR, UK

A neighborhood cocktail bar with the ease of a pub, and our pick near King's Cross for a group that wants to talk. Around 30 standing fits in the garden room or private basement. Large groups and all Thursday to Saturday bookings need card details. Closed most Mondays.

Big Chill King's Cross

Big Chill King's Cross

257-259 Pentonville Rd, London N1 9NL, UK

Made for the party that's too big for a normal table but too small to hire a whole bar. The Green Room holds 30 and the Deco Lounge 50, with the dance floor close by. Minimum spends vary, so get the figure when you call.

SUPERMAX

SUPERMAX

14-18 Handyside St, London N1C 4DN, UK

A disco in the basement beneath Happy Face Pizza, with cocktails, DJs and a dance floor, for a birthday that should feel like a night out. It's open Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm. Private hire goes up to 100 and is the only option Sunday to Tuesday.

The Star of Kings

The Star of Kings

126 York Wy, London N1 0AX, UK

A proper pub with room to grow, from the back bar to the upstairs Green Room (60 standing) or the basement, Behind The Bookcase (120 standing), with its own bar, stage and CDJs. Patty & Bun does the food. Book by email.

The Grafton

The Grafton

20 Prince of Wales Rd, London NW5 3LG, UK

A pub before anything else, with 29 rotating taps, burgers, and cod and chips. The private karaoke room takes 30 or more, for friends who'd rather sing to each other than brave an open mic. Reserve indoor tables ahead, since outdoor tables can't be booked.

Heist Bank

Heist Bank

5 N Wharf Rd, London W2 1LA, UK

Pizza, beer and games that stay optional, so some people can play while others just talk. The private Games Room takes 20–50 standing or 32 seated, with karaoke, a projector and a Nintendo 64. The Pool Room takes 30–90 standing. Hire fees start at £50.

The Prince

The Prince

The Prince, 14 Lillie Rd, West Brompton, Crossing SW6 1TT, UK

A three-floor pub and sports bar with a garden and three food vendors, built for a dressed-up birthday. Groups under 40 book online. Saturdays are reservation only, and it's over-21s after 8pm on Fridays, all day Saturdays and on bank-holiday Sundays. Tables are only held for 20 minutes.

East London

The widest spread here, from private cocktail rooms in Shoreditch to long afternoons in Hackney Wick, a beer hall in Walthamstow and a big corporate option at Canary Wharf.

Callooh Callay

Callooh Callay

65 Rivington St, London EC2A 3QQ, UK

Cocktails are the point here, in low-lit rooms that beat an open-plan party bar for a milestone birthday. The upstairs JubJub takes 40 with its own bar and bartender, and the Back Lounge takes 50. There's no hire fee, just a minimum spend on food and drink.

Queen of Hoxton

Queen of Hoxton

1 Curtain Rd, London EC2A 3JX, UK

A few different nights out in one building: rooftop, main bar, then basement club. In winter the rooftop has fire pits and a heated yurt, but it's mostly walk-in and depends on the weather. A limited number of tables take up to 30, so check exactly what your booking includes.

Flight Club Shoreditch

Flight Club Shoreditch

2A Worship St, London EC2A 2AH, UK

Social darts gives a work night something better than asking which department everyone's in, with food and drinks brought to your oche. Each oche takes 12, and you can book up to 36 online. Games run up to 90 minutes. It's 18+ after 5pm and all day Saturday.

CRATE Hackney Wick

CRATE Hackney Wick

Unit 7 Queen's Yard, London E9 5EN, UK

Beer, pizza and the canal: about as much plan as a long Hackney Wick afternoon needs. Indoor tables book for 4–20, and bigger groups email. Canalside seats are always first come, first served, so book inside if you need a guaranteed base. Outdoor tables are heated.

Howling Hops Tank Bar

Howling Hops Tank Bar

Unit 9A Queen's Yard, White Post Ln, London E9 5EN, UK

Ten tanks behind a 10-meter bar, plus a resident kitchen, so beer lovers get excited and nobody has to treat it like a tasting. Reserve for groups over six, especially on weekends, and come for casual drinks and food, not a private room.

People's Park Tavern

People's Park Tavern

360 Victoria Park Rd, London E9 7BT, UK

A real choice of settings: the main bar, the garden or the Greenhaus, its winter spot for enjoying the outdoors from inside. Online bookings go up to 30 for three hours. The upstairs function room holds 70, with karaoke and its own bar, for a £250 charge.

Big Penny Social

Big Penny Social

1 Priestley Way, London E17 6AL, UK

Start here when your group has outgrown a pub table but doesn't need its own party. A beer hall, garden and sourdough pizza leave room to mingle and little to organize, with indoor curling this winter. Weekend bookings of 16 or more need a £50 card hold, charged only for a no-show.

Pergola on the Wharf

Pergola on the Wharf

Crossrail Pl, Canary Wharf Estate, London E14 5AR, UK

More celebratory than the nearest office pub, with no darts or set program. Spaces run from 12 to 700, and the minimum spend covers food and drinks, which helps if the company is paying. It's 21+ on Fridays after 5pm, all day Saturday and on bank-holiday Sundays.

South London

London Bridge gives you street food, outdoor tables and cocktails within a short walk of each other. Farther out, Deptford, Peckham, Brixton and Battersea are better for a real party, with rooms you can make your own.

Flat Iron Square

Flat Iron Square

45 Southwark St, London SE1 9HP, UK

The answer when the group can agree on drinks but not dinner, with street food, bars and live sports on one site. Groups of 20 or more use the inquiry form. The garden is covered and heated. It's closed Mondays, and Sundays finish at 8pm.

Vinegar Yard

Vinegar Yard

72-82 St Thomas St, London SE1 3QX, UK

An outdoor yard by London Bridge where a group can book real space, with outdoor tables for 10–50 for two and a half hours. It only opens Wednesday to Saturday, and Saturday is the only day it opens before 5pm. Most of the site moves under heated tents from late fall.

The Last Talisman

The Last Talisman

171 Bermondsey St, London SE1 3UW, UK

Cocktails and Asian-inspired food for a birthday that starts with dinner and carries on with drinks. The mezzanine takes 30 standing, or 50 in its extended layout, and hire-only Mala Madre takes 90 standing or 60 seated. Closed Sundays, and Mondays are private hire only.

Electric Shuffle London Bridge

Electric Shuffle London Bridge

10 Bermondsey St, London SE1 2ER, UK

Shuffleboard with live leaderboards, a bar and food, so the group has something to do while it talks. Bookings take 2–32, and events from 33 to 350 go through the group inquiry. Only over-18s can play. Book a drinks table if you want to stay on after the game.

Buster Mantis

Buster Mantis

3-4 Resolution Way, London SE8 4NT, UK

Two soundproofed rooms in the Deptford railway arches, and you choose the soundtrack. Alpha holds 55 standing or 24 seated with its own bar, and Omega holds 80 standing or 32 seated. It's open Thursday to Sunday only, and Sundays close at 6pm.

Prince of Peckham

Prince of Peckham

1 Clayton Rd, London SE15 5JA, UK

A party atmosphere without cutting your guests off from the pub. The semi-private Terracotta Room takes 30 seated or 50–60 standing, with a hire fee plus a drinks-only minimum. The venue controls the music, and it's over-21s after 8:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Jumbi

Jumbi

Unit 4.1, Copeland Park, 133 Copeland Rd, London SE15 3SN, UK

A hi-fi music bar and restaurant built around the sounds and flavors of the African-Caribbean diaspora, for when the music matters as much as the drinks. Email for larger groups. Friday and Saturday bookings end at 9pm, there's no guest list, and steep steps mean it isn't wheelchair accessible.

Mother Kelly's Vauxhall

Mother Kelly's Vauxhall

76 Albert Embankment, London SE11 5AW, UK

For when nobody wants a set menu, an activity or a nightclub: a big railway arch with around 30 taps, two outdoor areas and Stackin Dough pizza Tuesday to Saturday. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are by email only. It's step-free, with an accessible restroom.

The Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh

204 Ferndale Rd, London SW9 8AG, UK

For the birthday plan that's really just a big table, some drinks and an afternoon together, with Jerk Valley in the kitchen. Bookings go up to 20 with a £25 no-show card hold. Space is held for up to an hour, and the garden closes at 9:30pm.

Pergola Brixton

Pergola Brixton

Brixton Village, Coldharbour Ln, London SW9 8PS, UK

A rooftop party, not a quiet corner, with a retractable roof that takes some of the risk out of the weather. Groups under 50 use a standard reservation, and the arches take up to 120 standing. Private spaces carry a drinks-only minimum spend. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

The Thieves

The Thieves

51 Lavender Gardens, London SW11 1JW, UK

The former Four Thieves is now a pub with arcade games, darts, karaoke and pool, plus Lucky Chip burgers, for when nobody can agree on one activity. The function room takes 80 seated or 120 standing. It's 18+ after 8pm and closed Mondays, and there's no elevator to the arcade.

How to book a large-group bar in London

Lead with the kind of evening, not just the headcount. "Thirty people for standing birthday drinks, with food available and guests arriving between 7 and 8pm" gets a far better answer than "Do you take large groups?" Say whether everyone needs a seat and whether you want music or conversation.

Find out what counts toward the minimum. A hire fee, a minimum spend, a deposit and a card hold are all different things. At The Prince, Pergola Brixton and Prince of Peckham, the minimum is drinks only, while at Pergola on the Wharf and Callooh Callay, food counts too. Ask who covers any shortfall.

Check the day and the door. Plenty of good group bars don't open seven days a week, and some set their own age limit above the legal 18. Booking terms and prices also tighten from mid-November, so plan early for December.

Frequently asked questions

Which London bars have no hire fee for groups?
Callooh Callay, The Winemakers Club, The Prince and both Pergola venues charge no separate hire fee during normal hours. You agree to a minimum spend instead, and it varies by room and date.
Can a large group just turn up without booking?
At some venues, yes, but it's a poor plan if staying together matters. Mother Kelly's Vauxhall and Big Penny Social both welcome walk-ins, while The Prince doesn't take walk-ins on Saturdays at all. For a sizable birthday or work night, secure your space first.
Which London bars can take 100 people or more?
Big Penny Social is the simplest place to start. Albert's Schloss has Ludwig's Tavern for up to 120, The Star of Kings' basement holds 120 standing, and The Thieves' function room takes the same. SUPERMAX's private hire goes up to 100.
Which bars are good for a large group in winter?
Big Penny Social, Mother Kelly's Vauxhall and Heist Bank are all easy indoor choices. For outdoor space that still works in the cold, Flat Iron Square has a covered, heated garden, Vinegar Yard moves under heated tents and Queen of Hoxton's rooftop has a heated yurt.
Do London bars have age limits for groups?
Yes, several set their own above the legal drinking age of 18. Albert's Schloss, The Prince, Prince of Peckham and Pergola on the Wharf all have over-21s rules at certain times, so check before you invite everyone.
Where can a large group watch sports in London?
Flat Iron Square's Taproom has 19 screens and a giant main screen, and The Duke of Edinburgh shows games on seven indoor screens plus a garden projector. For American football, see our guide to the best NFL bars in London, which covers more bars that take group bookings.
