Some of the best pub gardens in London are exactly what you'd picture: wisteria, long tables, and a Sunday that gets away from you. Others are big covered beer gardens with heaters and a screen, which is what you want in February. We've included both, plus a few riverside terraces and old courtyards that nobody would call a lawn but we couldn't leave out.

The list runs by area. Each pub's card covers the things that usually wreck the plan: whether you can book outside, when the garden closes, and when kids have to leave. Central London has very few true gardens, so if you're near the West End or the South Bank, start with The Windsor Castle in Kensington or the London Bridge section.

Best Pub Gardens in North London

North London has the deepest bench of real gardens, from Barnsbury up to the edge of Hampstead Heath.

The Albion

The Albion

10 Thornhill Rd, London N1 1HW, UK

Behind this wisteria-covered Georgian pub in Barnsbury is more than 450 square meters of English country garden, with French windows opening straight out of the restaurant. It's a long-lunch pub, and the kitchen backs that up with charcoal-grilled chops and steaks and a proper Sunday roast. The wisteria is a spring bonus, so don't plan your whole visit around it. Details: Book online, or email for 8 or more. The garden closes at 9:45pm. No food 3–6pm Monday to Thursday. Late cancellations cost £25 per person.

The Faltering Fullback

The Faltering Fullback

19 Perth Rd, Finsbury Park, London N4 3HB, UK

The yard here is small, so the owners built up instead of out. Tiers of wooden decking climb through the greenery with tables wedged in wherever they fit, and it looks like nowhere else in London. It's an Irish pub with a Thai kitchen and a very good pint of Guinness, and a big rugby day turns the whole place into a different animal. Details: No reservations, so arrive early. Food starts around 5pm on weekdays and 2pm on weekends. The upper garden levels are stairs only. Children usually until 6pm. Dogs in quiet periods only.

The Spaniards Inn

The Spaniards Inn

Spaniards Rd, London NW3 7JJ, UK

Built in 1585 on the edge of Hampstead Heath, The Spaniards is best as the end of a long walk. The walled garden has plenty of seating, some sheltered tables, patio heaters for cooler days, and barbecues in summer. Give it the whole afternoon, because it's too far out for a quick drink. Details: Book online and ask for the garden. Only some tables are sheltered.

The Canonbury

The Canonbury

21 Canonbury Pl, London N1 2NS, UK

The Canonbury's leafy garden has a dedicated space for groups of up to 30, which makes it one of the easier birthday bookings on this list. In season, the C Shack serves oysters, lobster rolls, and cider-battered fish and chips in the garden from Thursday to Sunday, and the main menu runs alongside it. Details: Book online, or enquire about the group space. Adults only in the pub and garden after 6pm. Dogs welcome.

The Drapers Arms

The Drapers Arms

44 Barnsbury St, London N1 1ER, UK

The food is the point at the Drapers. It's a neighborhood dining pub with a serious wine list and a garden out back, better for a couple or a few friends over a long Sunday lunch than a big group. If The Albion is full, this is the obvious backup a short walk away. Details: Garden tables are booked on request by phone or email.

The Edinboro Castle

The Edinboro Castle

57 Mornington Terrace, London NW1 7RU, UK

Tucked between Camden's markets and Regent's Park, the Edinboro Castle is the easy answer when a group needs outdoor space near Camden. The garden is big and loud on a sunny day, and at night the fairy lights and heaters come on. The railway runs alongside, so this isn't the place for peace and quiet. Details: Book online, or ask about garden hire for bigger groups. Part of the garden is covered, so ask for that side when the forecast looks bad.

The Stag

The Stag

67 Fleet Rd, Belsize Park, London NW3 2QU, UK

Young's reopened The Stag in January 2026 after a major refurb, and the garden got a serious upgrade: a dedicated bar, outdoor screens, year-round cabanas, and a Garden Room with a fireplace and retractable awnings. It's now one of the better cold-weather options in North London. The wings survived, which the regulars would have insisted on. Details: Book online and say which space you want. Sport is terrestrial TV only, so expect rugby internationals, not Sky football.

The Flask

The Flask

77 Highgate W Hill, London N6 6BU, UK

The Flask is here for the pub as much as the outdoor space. It's a centuries-old Fuller's pub in Highgate village with a good-sized courtyard, a full menu, and enough rooms to retreat to if the weather turns. It works just as well for one pint as a full meal. Details: Book online and ask for outside. Dogs welcome. This is The Flask in Highgate, not the Hampstead pub of the same name.

Best Beer Gardens in East London

East London's gardens run bigger and louder, and two of the five here are built to work through the winter.

The Chesham Arms

The Chesham Arms

East London Public House, 15 Mehetabel Rd, London E9 6DU, UK

The Chesham is a proper Hackney local and a registered community asset, with a big garden, a raised terrace, and two fireplaces for when the garden isn't an option. There's no full kitchen, but Yard Sale Pizza delivers to the pub, so an afternoon pint can turn into dinner without anyone moving. Details: No bookings. Opens 4pm Monday to Friday and noon on weekends. The garden has no wheelchair access, the terrace does, and there's no accessible toilet. Dogs welcome.

People's Park Tavern

People's Park Tavern

360 Victoria Park Rd, London E9 7BT, UK

Right on Victoria Park, this is one of East London's best spots for losing an afternoon: big tables, a big garden, and a crowd that isn't going anywhere. It's built for groups, with karaoke and a function room upstairs, and the Greenhaus keeps the outdoors-indoors feeling going once it gets cold. Details: Book the garden online for 4 to 30, since the main bar and Greenhaus book separately. Tables run 3 hours. Groups over 10 may need a £5 per person hold. Under-18s until 7pm. Dogs welcome.

The Crooked Billet

The Crooked Billet

84 Upper Clapton Rd, London E5 9JP, UK

If you want a beer garden you can trust in any weather, start here. A recent refurb put a retractable roof over most of this huge Clapton garden, then added heaters and blankets. Screens run throughout, so the football and rugby take over on match days. Bring friends, not a book. Details: Book ahead for weekends and big fixtures. The roof covers most of the garden, not all of it.

The Scolt Head

The Scolt Head

107A Culford Rd, London N1 4HT, UK

The Scolt Head is a good neighborhood pub that hasn't forgotten what that means. The garden is smaller and easier than the big East London beer gardens, and nobody makes you order a full meal to sit in it, so it's a drinks-first option that still has a good kitchen behind it. Details: Book outside online for Monday to Friday daytimes only. Evenings and weekends are first come, first served, and the pub asks you not to email about it. All sport is first come, first served.

The Black Eel

The Black Eel

41 Kingsland High St, London E8 2JP, UK

Exale Brewery's biggest pub took over the Grade II listed F. Cooke pie and mash shop on Kingsland High Street and kept the tiles and the shopfront. Out back is a surprise: a leafy 150-seat garden with a pétanque court, a boat you can sit in, and a covered area called the eel tank. Riley's runs the kitchen, and the Sunday roast is worth planning around. Details: Book online. The garden closes at 10pm and goes one-in, one-out when it's full. Opens 3pm Monday to Wednesday and noon the rest of the week.

Best Beer Gardens in South London

South London has the biggest gardens on this list, and several of them are set up for groups. If you're planning a birthday, the huts at The Castle and The Leather Bottle are the first places to look.

The Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh

204 Ferndale Rd, London SW9 8AG, UK

The Duke says it has the biggest pub garden in South London, and on a sunny Saturday it's hard to argue. There's a jumbo screen outside, DJs inside on Saturdays, and Jerk Valley of London running the kitchen. It's also a short walk from Brixton Academy, and they'll hold your bag during a show. Details: The garden closes at 9:30pm unless there's a screening, and sport outside has no commentary. Opens 4pm Monday to Thursday, 3pm Friday, and noon on weekends. All bookings need a £25 card hold. No children after 5pm on weekends or 7pm on weekdays. Dogs welcome.

The Leather Bottle

The Leather Bottle

538 Garratt Ln, Earlsfield Rd, London SW17 0NY, UK

The Leather Bottle's garden goes on for a while: decking, two outdoor bars, hidden corners, and huts that hold 12 to 30 people, one with its own fireplace and TV. It's one of the easiest places in South West London to get a big group outside without anyone standing around. Don't come looking for a tiny secret garden. Details: Book a table or hut online. Burger Shack currently runs Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. Dogs welcome.

The Castle

The Castle

38 Tooting High St, London SW17 0RG, UK

The huts here are actual mini castles, with sofas inside, and they hold 10 to 35 people. The garden itself is covered and heated, which makes it one of the safest bets in London for a winter birthday or a rugby afternoon. Burger Shack handles the food outside. Details: Book a hut well ahead for groups. Each one has its own capacity, so check the hut against your numbers.

The Avalon

The Avalon

16 Balham Hill, London SW12 9EB, UK

The Avalon has three outdoor spaces that work very differently. The rear garden, with mature trees, wooden booths, and a giant feasting table, is the reason to come on a warm day, but it only runs April to September. The covered, heated courtyard and terrace are open all year. Details: The rear garden is weather permitting and first come, first served. Only groups of 10 or more who are eating can book it, by email. Courtyard and terrace reservations are also for 10 or more.

The Herne Tavern

The Herne Tavern

2 Forest Hill Rd, London SE22 0RR, UK

Despite the name, The Herne is in East Dulwich, not Herne Hill. Its garden is tucked away behind the pub with real planting in it, and it sits right across from Peckham Rye Park, which gives you a simple Sunday: a walk, a roast, and no further plans. Details: Book online and ask for the garden. The kitchen opens at 5pm on Mondays.

Perry Hill

Perry Hill

78-80 Perry Hill, London SE6 4EY, UK

Perry Hill is the family pick in this part of South London. It calls itself family friendly and means it, with a huge heated beer garden, food from noon every day, and Sunday roasts until they run out. Bring the dog too. Details: Book heated garden tables online or by email. Dogs welcome throughout.

Fox & Firkin

Fox & Firkin

316a, 316 Lewisham High St, London SE13 6JZ, UK

The Fox & Firkin has a sprawling garden with a 1950s railway carriage parked in it, which tells you most of what you need to know. It's a brewery, music venue, and pub in one, with Freewheeling Pizza slinging wood-fired slices from a van in the garden and live acts most weeks. Details: Tables can't be booked during events, so check the calendar first. The carriage can be hired for private parties. Family friendly until 8pm. Step-free access to the garden.

The Plume of Feathers

The Plume of Feathers

19 Park Vista, London SE10 9LZ, UK

Greenwich has plenty of river views, and the Plume is the better idea after a walk in the park. It's a traditional pub right by Greenwich Park with an award-winning garden behind it, a good place to finish a day around the museums. Details: At weekends, garden bookings are for 12–12:30pm arrivals only, then it's walk-in. Call to book a section for a group. Sunday lunch runs in three booked sittings, and the kitchen closes at 5pm on Sundays.

The Ship

The Ship

41 Jews Row, London SW18 1TB, UK

The Ship is a party with a river view. It's a big, social Thames-side terrace in Wandsworth, with rugby on screens inside and out and a crowd that's settled in for the day. Come here for the scene, not for a quiet bench. Details: Over-21s only from 5pm Fridays and 3pm Saturdays. Book a table online, or go through the events team for outdoor party spaces.

Best Pub Gardens in West London

West London gives you the most range: a courtyard in Kensington, huge gardens out toward Ealing, and the best stretch of riverside pubs on this list.

The Windsor Castle

The Windsor Castle

114 Campden Hill Rd, London W8 7AR, UK

This is about as close to central London as a good pub garden gets. The Windsor Castle pairs a courtyard beer garden with a wood-paneled Victorian interior, so you've got somewhere just as good to go if it starts to rain. It's on the Notting Hill and Holland Park side of Kensington, and it's a better fit for a date or small lunch than a crowd. Details: Book online and ask for the courtyard. It's small and popular, so don't turn up with a large group.

The Eagle

The Eagle

215 Askew Rd, London W12 9AZ, UK

The Eagle's garden feels bigger and greener than anything on Askew Road has a right to. The bookable huts are the draw for groups, and the My Place hut is fully covered, so you can stop checking the forecast. Burger Shack and a full pub menu cover the food. Details: Book a hut online; each seats 15, or 20 standing. The garden closes at 9pm Sunday to Thursday and 10pm Friday and Saturday.

The Drayton Court

The Drayton Court

2 The Avenue, London W13 8PH, UK

A Fuller's pub and hotel in West Ealing with a very large garden that's open to anyone, not just overnight guests. There's wood-fired pizza and a covered Aperol Lounge, and on busy summer days you'll often find a Siren pop-up bar and an all-day barbecue. It's the one to pick when room to spread out matters more than being somewhere fashionable. Details: Outdoor tables go through the pub's online request form, which isn't an instant confirmation. The barbecue and pop-up bars are summer extras, so don't count on them.

The Swan

The Swan

119 Evershed Walk, Acton Ln, London W4 5HH, UK

The Swan is tucked off Acton Lane in Chiswick, with a large lawned garden, a patio, and a Mediterranean menu with an Italian lean. It feels more like a local's secret than a Thames-side pub, and it suits a slow weekend lunch or a weekday dinner with a few friends. Details: No weekday lunch: it opens at 5pm Monday to Friday, with the kitchen from 5:30pm, and at noon on weekends. Book ahead and ask for the garden.

The Crabtree

The Crabtree

Rainville Rd, London W6 9HA, UK

If you want a pub garden and the Thames in the same afternoon, this is the one. The Crabtree has a spacious beer garden, riverside terraces, and a full kitchen, plus a Crabshack grill from spring to autumn when the sun's out. It's a good reward after a walk along the river. Details: Book online and say which area you want, because a garden table and a river view aren't the same thing.

The White Cross

The White Cross

Riverside House, Water Ln, Richmond TW9 1TH, UK

There's no garden at The White Cross, just riverside tables in the middle of Richmond's waterfront, some of the best sunsets in London, and the Thames itself for entertainment. Keep the plan simple: a walk, a drink, and a meal if a table opens up. Details: Outdoor tables can't be booked, so get there early on a sunny day. The Thames rises around the building at high tide, the pub posts a live tide tracker, and it keeps wellies on hand so people can still get in.

The Anglers

The Anglers

3 Broom Rd, Teddington TW11 9NR, UK

The Anglers has the best riverside garden for a whole day out, right on Teddington Lock with its own pontoon for boats, canoes, and paddleboards. Some of the garden gets table service on fine days, the rest is casual, and parts are covered and heated. On sunny days a pizza shack, barbecue, and outside bar often run from morning to evening. Details: Order the full menu at numbered outside tables. Private areas can be booked. Dogs welcome throughout. Under-18s until 9pm.

Outdoor Pubs Near London Bridge and Bermondsey

None of these three is a lawn, but they're the best outdoor pub seats near the center of town: a historic courtyard, a covered garden, and a jetty over the Thames.

The George Inn

The George Inn

75 Borough High St, London SE1 1NH, UK

The George is a 17th-century galleried inn owned by the National Trust, and the courtyard under those white wooden galleries is one of the great places to have a pint in London. It's right by Borough Market, so expect a crowd and a bit of noise, and go for the setting more than any peace and quiet. Details: Courtyard tables fill fast. If you're booking, ask for outside.

The Woolpack

The Woolpack

98 Bermondsey St, Bridge, London SE1 3UB, UK

The Woolpack's garden is covered and heated, with tables and private booths, so a plan on Bermondsey Street doesn't have to depend on the weather. It's an easy meeting point near London Bridge, and the kitchen runs all day until 9:30pm. Details: Book online, by phone, or by email. Under-18s until 5pm Monday to Friday, 3pm Saturday, and 7pm Sunday. Dogs welcome, including in the garden.

The Mayflower

The Mayflower

117 Rotherhithe St, London SE16 4NF, UK

The Mayflower's wooden jetty sits right above the Thames in Rotherhithe, with the old pub behind it. It's a small space and a big part of why people make the trip, so it suits a couple or a few friends who don't mind waiting for a seat. Details: The jetty is walk-in only. Bookings cover the ground-floor pub and upstairs restaurant. Dogs are welcome on the ground floor and the jetty.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best pub gardens in London?
For a classic garden, start with The Albion in Barnsbury or The Spaniards Inn in Hampstead. The Faltering Fullback is the most distinctive, and The Anglers in Teddington is the best for a riverside day out.
Which London beer gardens are covered or heated?
The Crooked Billet has a retractable roof over most of its garden, plus heaters and blankets. The Castle in Tooting and The Woolpack in Bermondsey are both covered and heated, as are The Avalon's courtyard and terrace. The Stag has year-round cabanas and a Garden Room, and Perry Hill has bookable heated tables.
Can you book a table in a London pub garden?
Sometimes, and a standard booking won't always put you outside. The Faltering Fullback and The Chesham Arms take no bookings, and the jetty at The Mayflower and the outdoor tables at The White Cross are walk-in only. The Drapers Arms books garden tables by phone or email, and The Scolt Head only takes outdoor bookings on weekday daytimes.
Which London pub gardens are good for families?
Perry Hill and The Anglers are the easiest choices. Check the cutoffs elsewhere: under-18s have to leave The Canonbury by 6pm, People's Park Tavern by 7pm, and Fox & Firkin by 8pm. The Duke of Edinburgh's limit is 5pm on weekends, and The Woolpack's is 3pm on Saturdays.
Which London pub gardens are dog friendly?
Perry Hill and The Anglers welcome dogs throughout, and so do The Leather Bottle, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Canonbury, and The Chesham Arms. The Faltering Fullback only allows them in quiet periods, and The Mayflower allows them on the ground floor and jetty.
Are London pub gardens wheelchair accessible?
It varies, so check the route to your table before you go. The Faltering Fullback's upper levels are stairs only, though its ground floor is accessible. The Chesham Arms has no wheelchair access to the garden, but its terrace is reachable, and Fox & Firkin has step-free access to its garden.
What's the best pub garden near central London?
Real gardens are rare in the center. The Windsor Castle in Kensington is the closest true pub garden, while The George Inn and The Woolpack are the best options near London Bridge.
