Plenty of Boston bars can fit six friends. The harder question is where 15 or 25 people can spend a night together without hovering over someone else's table.
These 29 bars handle that well, whether you're planning birthday drinks, a going-away party, a reunion, a work happy hour or a holiday get-together. Some take free group table reservations, some will hold a lounge or a section of the taproom, and a few build the night around an activity. Most are in Boston proper, from downtown pubs and Seaport breweries to Dorchester, Brighton and Charlestown, with three Cambridge and Somerville picks at the end.
Start with the table below, then use the entries for the details that make a booking work: how many people a space actually seats, what the minimum spend looks like and when the crowd changes.

Easy Group Hangs: Birthdays, Going-Away Drinks and Catch-Ups
Start here when the night is mostly about seeing everyone, whether that's a birthday, a reunion or an after-work round that might turn into dinner.

Dorchester Brewing Company
1250 Massachusetts Ave, Boston, MA 02125, USA
Dorchester Brewing is the easiest place on this list to start. It takes free table reservations for 6–24 people, which solves the hardest part of an ordinary group night without turning a birthday into a private event. M&M BBQ is on site, there's a game room, and the enclosed rooftop Hopservatory works year-round, so it's a safe bet for a winter birthday. The drinks go beyond beer, and outside food isn't allowed. Group plan: free table reservations for 6–24; events route for 25+. Cost: no reservation fee for 6–24; food and drinks as ordered.

Democracy Brewing Downtown
35 Temple Pl, Boston, MA 02111, USA
Democracy is the downtown meeting point when friends are coming from all over the city. It has a pub's warmth and a beer hall's communal feel, plus a full kitchen that can turn a couple of rounds into dinner. The Lounge is the sweet spot for a birthday or going-away party, and the Private Dining Room takes over when the list keeps growing. Settle the bar setup when you book: a host tab, drink tickets or everyone on their own. Group plan: Lounge 20 seated / 25 standing; Private Dining Room 60 seated / 65 standing. Cost: event pricing by arrangement.

High Street Place
100 High St, Boston, MA 02110, USA
High Street Place solves the group chat that can't agree on dinner. Everyone orders from whichever of the hall's roughly 20 vendors they want, then meets back at the communal tables. For a casual meetup, treat the open seating as shared space; if a birthday or work happy hour needs a guaranteed home base, book a gathering. It closes earlier than a late-night bar and is usually closed Sundays, so think after-work rather than midnight. Group plan: online requests for 6–40; events team for larger groups. Cost: deposit required for booked gatherings.

Beantown Pub
100 Tremont St, Boston, MA 02108, USA
Beantown is a straightforward downtown pub near Boston Common: beer, pub food, pool tables and not much of an itinerary. The regular pub doesn't take reservations, so it works best for a modest group that can arrive early and stay loose about seating. For an organized birthday, ask about a private party and whether the pool tables come with your space; the pool area is 21+. Group plan: walk-in for regular visits; private parties for larger organized groups. Cost: drinks and food as ordered; private-party terms on request.

The Dubliner
2 Center Plz, Boston, MA 02108, USA
The Dubliner is the pick when the group wants Guinness, a proper dinner and a band. Its Government Center spot also makes it an easy meeting point for friends coming in on different T lines. Book a regular table for dinner, or ask about the private room for a bigger crowd. There's live music Wednesday through Sunday, so an early catch-up and a night built around the band are two different plans. Group plan: table reservations, or a private room through the events team. Cost: group pricing by arrangement.

Back Bay Social
867 Boylston St, Boston, MA 02116, USA
When the guest list has outgrown one dinner table, Back Bay Social keeps the party in the middle of the bar. The Boylston High Tops run along the windows and give a group its own landing spot without walling it off. There's a full menu, so a birthday can start with burgers and run late; go earlier if conversation is the priority. The events team also books the Down Bar at the Retro Room, a separate basement restaurant, so name the space you want. Group plan: Boylston High Tops 30 seated / 40 standing. Cost: event pricing quoted; regular checks add 20% gratuity for parties of 8+.

City Tap Fort Point
10 Boston Wharf Rd, Boston, MA 02210, USA
City Tap makes the food decision easy. Pizza, wings, burgers and full entrées sit alongside a broad drinks list, so the friend who wants a real dinner and the friend who wants another IPA are both covered. Book a regular table if everyone will sit and eat. If people will be standing and drifting in all night, go through the Fort Point events inquiry instead, since a dinner reservation won't cover that. Group plan: regular table booking or a Fort Point event inquiry. Cost: menu prices for regular visits; event terms quoted.

The Tall Ship
1 E Pier Dr, Boston, MA 02128, USA
In warm weather, The Tall Ship turns group drinks into an occasion: a 245-foot ship moored at Pier One, skyline views across the harbor and an outdoor venue built around it. Book a Waterfront Lounge so the group has a home base, or a Harbor Hut if you're there for a game, since the huts face the big screen. It's an outdoor, seasonal venue, so check what's running on your date before you book. All food comes from the venue, cakes and desserts included. Group plan: Waterfront Lounges for 8–15, one large lounge for 25; Harbor Huts for 8–15; up to 3.5 hours. Cost: minimum spend that varies by day and time, plus a $50 booking fee and 20% gratuity.
Beer Halls and Breweries for Big Groups
The best brewery picks give a group more than room to stand: tables you can actually reserve, real food and enough on the menu for the friends who don't drink beer.

Harpoon Seaport
306 Northern Ave, Boston, MA 02210, USA
Harpoon is the classic big-table Boston beer outing: long communal tables, fresh beer, bar pies and a hot dog menu from chef Ken Oringer. Regular seating is first come, first served, so this is a planner's pick, not a last-minute one. For 16–32 people, request a two-hour multi-table event at least three weeks out. The outdoor area is seasonal; in winter you're in the beer hall. Outside food isn't allowed. Group plan: two-hour multi-table events for 16–32, requested at least three weeks ahead. Cost: $50 per person minimum spend plus fees; food and drink all count toward it.

Night Shift Brewing Lovejoy Wharf
1 Lovejoy Wharf #101, Boston, MA 02114, USA
Night Shift on Lovejoy Wharf is built for a pizza-and-beer meetup that sees where the night goes. The waterfront setting helps, and the drinks list covers the friends who'd rather skip beer. Regular service is walk-in; to hold space for the whole group, go through private events. It's steps from TD Garden, which is handy before a game or concert and crowded for the same reason, so pick a quieter night if catching up is the point. Group plan: walk-in regular service; events inquiry for reserved space. Cost: food and drinks as ordered; event terms quoted.

Lord Hobo Boston
2 Drydock Ave, Boston, MA 02210, USA
Lord Hobo lets a group settle into its own section without leaving the taproom behind. The semi-private high-top area includes part of the bar, and smaller slices of it can be booked for groups under 30. The full section grows with the guest list, and the full kitchen covers both after-work drinks and a birthday dinner. Ask for an indoor setup in colder months; the patio is separate, not extra winter seating. Group plan: partial high-top section for groups under 30; full section 56 seated / 70 standing. Cost: event terms quoted.

Trillium Fort Point
50 Thomson Pl, Boston, MA 02210, USA
Trillium Fort Point is worth planning ahead for when good beer and good food are the whole point. The taproom, the upstairs Headroom with small plates and cocktails, and a seasonal roof deck give it more range than a typical tasting room. Regular reservations top out at eight, and private or semi-private events start at 10; for nine, call. Events carry a food-and-beverage minimum but no separate room fee, and only purchases on the one host tab count toward it. Group plan: reservations for 1–8; private and semi-private events from 10. Cost: food-and-beverage minimum on one tab, plus tax, gratuity and admin fees.

Mighty Squirrel Taproom & Kitchen Fenway
1 David Ortiz Dr, Boston, MA 02215, USA
Mighty Squirrel's two-story taproom, a block from Fenway Park, has the clearest booking tiers on this list: tables for 1–6, large-party reservations for 7–24 and private events for 25 or more. The kitchen goes well past brewery snacks, so it suits a group that wants to eat together. Drinks are beer, hard seltzer and nonalcoholic options rather than a full cocktail list. Red Sox games and concerts pack the neighborhood, so book around them or lean into them. Group plan: 1–6 standard; 7–24 large-party booking; 25+ private events. Cost: regular menu prices or event minimums, depending on the booking.

Notch Brewing Brighton
525 Western Ave, Brighton, MA 02135, USA
Notch Brighton is a change of pace from downtown: long beer-hall tables, a biergarten at the Charles River Speedway and food from the stalls around it. Outside food is welcome any time, and dogs can join you in the biergarten. Notch pours its own beer, a gluten-free radler and NA beer, with no wine or cider, so make sure that works for a mixed crowd. It's 21+ after 8 p.m., and the outdoor space depends on the weather. Group plan: casual taproom visits or a reserved event area. Cost: reserved areas carry a rental fee and a minimum.

Samuel Adams Boston Taproom
60 State St, Boston, MA 02109, USA
The Sam Adams taproom is the big, easy downtown beer hall: three floors, long community tables and a rooftop patio, right beside Faneuil Hall. It's a natural meeting point for a group that's mostly there for beer and conversation. Food is on the lighter side, so eat first or plan to move on to dinner nearby. Walk-in seating is shared, so for a bigger group, ask the taproom about holding an area before you send the invite. Group plan: communal walk-in seating; ask the taproom about reserved space. Cost: drinks and food as ordered.
Cocktail Bars and Lounges for Group Drinks
For a dressier birthday or a drinks-first party, a reserved lounge or bar area usually fits better than a dining-room table.

Bostonia Public House
131 State St, Boston, MA 02109, USA
Bostonia answers one of the most common group questions: can we reserve somewhere for drinks without organizing a whole dinner? The Drink Rail is built for exactly that, with room for up to 20 and the option to spill into the adjacent bar for about 30. It's standing room, so plan on mingling and appetizers. If everyone needs a chair, the 1880 Room seats up to 30, and the Board of Trade Room takes about 50 seated or 90 standing. Group plan: Drink Rail up to 20 standing; 1880 Room up to 30 seated. Cost: event terms quoted.

Carrie Nation Restaurant & Cocktail Club
11 Beacon St, Boston, MA 02108, USA
For a cocktail-focused birthday, Carrie Nation's back Speakeasy has the setting: dark wood, lounge seating and billiards, with the full restaurant menu if the plan includes food. Ask specifically for the Speakeasy, private or semi-private. The venue also books its Beacon Room and main dining room, so a generic reservation won't necessarily put your group where you pictured it. Group plan: private or semi-private Speakeasy; other dining rooms also available. Cost: event terms quoted.

Bully Boy Distillers
44 Cedric St, Boston, MA 02119, USA
Bully Boy gives a cocktail crowd something different: drinks made with the distillery's own spirits, plus a lounge and pinball tucked behind the bar. Bring your own food or have it delivered. Regular visits are walk-in, Thursday through Sunday, and it's 21+ and cashless. It's a destination in Newmarket rather than a stop on a downtown crawl. Group plan: Lab Space up to 20; Barrel Room up to 65; private cocktail classes up to 16. Cost: drinks as ordered; rooms and classes quoted.
Bars With Games and Activities
A booked activity gives everyone a reason to show up on time. Pick something people can rotate through, and sort out where the group will eat before or after.

Flight Club Boston
60 Seaport Blvd Ste 215, Boston, MA 02210, USA
Flight Club works especially well when half the group hasn't met. The darts games give everyone something to do, scoring is automatic, and nobody has to be good at it. Walk-ins can use the bar, but reserve a lane if darts are the reason you're going. It's cashless, 21+ after 6 p.m. Sunday through Friday and 21+ all day Saturday. Group plan: online booking for 2–12; events for 13+. Cost: darts from $14 per person for 60 minutes; food and drinks extra.

SPIN Boston
30 Melcher St, Boston, MA 02210, USA
SPIN gives a group a place to gather and something to do once everyone arrives. It suits birthdays and reunions where people want to circulate and keep swapping opponents. The weekend party packages bundle a section with dedicated tables, extra seating, stationed food and a bar package, and they open 30 days out. Bigger groups or other nights go through private events. It's 21+ after 9 p.m. Group plan: tables up to 10; weekend party packages for 4–20. Cost: packages from $50 per person for two hours with beer, wine and two food items.

PKL Boston
64 C St, South Boston, MA 02127, USA
PKL is made for a group that wants to play something together without needing everyone on a court. Five indoor pickleball courts, shuffleboard, cornhole, a lounge and Pig Beach BBQ leave room for the competitive friends and the ones who'd rather watch. Events pair the court or space rental with a food-and-beverage minimum; guests can run separate tabs toward it, but the host covers any shortfall. Group plan: up to 12 social guests per court; small-group events up to 24; larger events from 25. Cost: court or space rental plus a food-and-beverage minimum, tax, gratuity and an admin fee.

Urban Wild
100 Hood Park Dr, Boston, MA 02129, USA
Urban Wild is the move when the party needs room to spread out. Bowling is the main draw, with two big bars, ping-pong, shuffleboard and lawn games around it. Tell the team how many people will bowl and how many will just hang out, then book lanes plus a gathering space. Hood Park is off the usual bar circuit, so put the exact address in the invite. Evenings are 21+, so check the age policy for a mixed-age group. Group plan: events from 10; lanes plus a gathering space. Cost: bowling or event package pricing; group space quoted.

Puttshack Boston
58 Pier 4 Blvd., Boston, MA 02210, USA
Puttshack fits a night where the game comes first and drinks or dinner come second. The balls keep score for you, which makes it easy to bring friends who are mostly there for the social side. A party of 7–12 plays in smaller sets of up to six, so plan to regroup afterward, and add a restaurant table if you want to eat together. It's 21+ after 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with an 8 p.m. last tee time for mixed-age groups. Group plan: online up to 12; events for more. Cost: mini golf from $18 per adult per course; food and drinks extra.
Sports Bars and Bigger Nights Out
These are the louder picks. Check the game and event schedule before you settle on one.

Banners Kitchen & Tap
82 Causeway St, Boston, MA 02114, USA
Banners is for the group that wants the game to be the main event. The huge screen, plenty of other TVs and a full menu make it an easy call for a watch party. Event setups range from the main floor to a semi-private mezzanine and private dining, so pick the area based on how much of the screen you want to see. It sits right next to TD Garden, so book ahead of big game and concert nights. Group plan: events from 20; main floor, mezzanine or private options. Cost: group pricing varies by date.

Bell in Hand
45 Union St, Boston, MA 02108, USA
Bell in Hand is for a group that wants the bustle of a downtown Saturday: pub food, several bars and the Faneuil Hall crowd outside. It suits an energetic birthday or reunion more than a quiet catch-up. Booking a room matters more here than at most bars, since a sprawling, packed venue makes it hard for late arrivals to find the group. Group plan: events from 20 in rooms across two floors. Cost: event pricing quoted.

The Greatest Bar
262 Friend St, Boston, MA 02114, USA
The Greatest Bar is for friends who want sports to start the night and a party to finish it. Four floors give it a different feel from a single-room pub. Match the floor and the timing to the plan, since a game outing, a birthday and a late DJ crowd want different setups at the same address. Check the TD Garden schedule before committing. Group plan: parties from 20 across four floors. Cost: event pricing quoted; check entry arrangements for your night.
Large-Group Bars in Cambridge and Somerville
These three are outside Boston proper. They're worth the trip when the location suits the guest list, especially if you plan to settle in for the night.

Aeronaut Brewing Somerville
14 Tyler St, Somerville, MA 02143, USA
Aeronaut is a relaxed Somerville meetup near Union Square, with food from resident vendors, outside food welcome and live music on some nights. It feels more like an evening with friends than a booked event, even with a table reserved. Reserved tables carry fees and a minimum spend, and drinks stay on one card until the minimum is met. Use the Tyler Street address; the Allston taproom is closed. Group plan: reserved tables for up to 40; Barrel Room for 40–120. Cost: table fees and a minimum spend.

Lamplighter CX
110 N First St, Cambridge, MA 02141, USA
For a Cambridge birthday with a room of its own, Lamplighter CX has a downstairs shuffleboard lounge with a game built in. Regular taproom visits are first come, first served; the lounge is a separate event booking. It's close to Lechmere on the Green Line, and outside food is welcome. This is a beer crowd's pick, since there's no full liquor bar. Group plan: shuffleboard lounge 15 seated / 30 standing; taproom is walk-in. Cost: event minimum and fees for the lounge.

State Park
Lower Level, 15 Hampshire St Bldg 300, Cambridge, MA 02139, USA
State Park throws a party that feels like a night at a neighborhood bar. Neon, comfort food, pool, pinball and a jukebox give people something to drift toward without a scheduled activity. The bar treats seven or more as a large party and 12 or more as an event. The Greenhouse has a little separation from the main bar and works for a birthday where some guests want dinner and others only want drinks. Group plan: large party from 7; events from 12; Greenhouse 14 seated / 30 standing. Cost: group terms quoted.
How to Plan a Group Bar Night in Boston
- Decide on seats or mingling first. A reserved standing area can be perfect for a birthday and wrong for a group expecting dinner. "20 people for drinks and appetizers, mostly standing" is much easier for a venue to place than "a big group."
- Ask for the all-in number. A room fee pays for the space, a minimum spend is what the group has to buy, and an activity charge pays for the game. Get the total with tax, gratuity and fees before you collect money from friends, and confirm who covers a shortfall if guests pay separately.
- Check the neighborhood's calendar. Near North Station, look at the TD Garden schedule; in Fenway, check Red Sox games and concerts. For Brighton, Dorchester, Hood Park or Cambridge, put the exact address in the invite.
- Ask before you bring a cake. Bully Boy, Notch, Aeronaut and Lamplighter allow outside food. Dorchester Brewing, Harpoon and The Tall Ship don't.
