Boston does happy hour a little differently. Massachusetts doesn't allow bars to discount drinks for part of the day, so the deals here come on a plate: $1 oysters, cheap tapas, half-price apps, and bar food generous enough to count as dinner.

This guide covers 25 picks across Boston and nearby Cambridge, Somerville and Brookline, with the deal, the hours and the seating rules for each. Most are oyster deals, because that's where Boston's happy hour is strongest. The rest are tapas, Mexican, Italian and pub food for anyone who'd rather skip the raw bar.

If one deal is the whole reason you're going, check the venue's menu first.

Downtown Boston Happy Hours: Financial District, Waterfront and West End

Downtown has the best rooms for the money, but watch the clock: several oyster deals here end at 5pm. Vermilion and The Merchant run later. The Seaport isn't on this list; we couldn't confirm a current food deal there worth planning around.

Vermilion

Vermilion

115 Federal St, Boston, MA 02110, USA

The 55-foot bar under a Dale Chihuly sculpture makes this the dressiest room on the list, and the bar menu keeps the bill sensible. Oysters plus a pizza is a proper snack for two, and the chicken skewer covers anyone skipping seafood. Details: Mon–Fri, 3–6pm. $1 chef-selected oysters, $10 tuna tartare, $10 pizzas, $8 chicken skewer, $6 fries. Bar only, walk-in, first come, first served.

The Merchant

The Merchant

60 Franklin St, Boston, MA 02110, USA

A downtown brasserie with a three-hour oyster window, long enough to arrive after work and still order a second round. Friday is the night for it: oysters at the bar, then dinner or the next stop. Details: Monday and Friday, 4–7pm. $1 oysters.

State Street Provisions

State Street Provisions

255 State St, Boston, MA 02109, USA

Wellfleet oysters steps from Long Wharf and the New England Aquarium. With a 5pm finish, this one is for a day off, an early exit from work or a break from sightseeing on the harbor. Details: Mon–Fri, 3–5pm. $1 Wellfleet oysters. Order before 5pm.

Fin Point Oyster Bar & Grille

Fin Point Oyster Bar & Grille

89 Broad St, Boston, MA 02110, USA

An oyster bar off the lobby of The Dagny hotel, and one of the few downtown deals that runs through the weekend. It suits hotel guests, a Thursday or Friday early finish, and weekend afternoons when the rest of the Financial District is quiet. Details: Thu–Sun, 2–5pm. $1 oysters.

Alcove

Alcove

50 Lovejoy Wharf, Boston, MA 02114, USA

A waterfront restaurant on Lovejoy Wharf, right behind North Station and TD Garden. That makes it the obvious first stop before a Celtics or Bruins game, or before a commuter train home. Details: Mon–Fri, 3–5pm. $1 oysters with a drink order.

Legal Sea Foods - Park Square

Legal Sea Foods - Park Square

79 Park Plaza at The Heritage on the Garden, Boston, MA 02116, USA

Boston's own seafood chain runs this deal at five branches, which makes it the easy answer when a group is coming from different parts of the city. Park Square is the only one running it every day and until 6pm; Copley covers Back Bay on weekdays. Details: $1 oysters, 50-cent littleneck clams, $2 shrimp cocktail, $9 bar bites. Park Square daily, 2–6pm; Copley Place Mon–Fri, 3–6pm; Downtown Crossing, Long Wharf and Harborside Mon–Fri, 2–5pm. Bar area, dine-in only; excludes holidays and selected promotional dates.

Back Bay, Kenmore and Fenway Happy Hours

This stretch has the best weekend and late-night coverage on the list. Most of these deals are bar or lounge only, so a dining-room reservation won't get you the happy-hour menu.

Row 34 Kenmore

Row 34 Kenmore

498 Commonwealth Ave, Boston, MA 02215, USA

The most complete happy hour on the list: oysters, a taco and a $15 burger or fish and chips means one stop can cover dinner. It runs on weekends too, a few minutes' walk from Fenway Park. Details: Mon–Fri, 4–6pm; Sat–Sun, 3–6pm. $1 chef-selected oysters (12 per person), $4 shrimp ceviche tacos, $15 fish and chips or bacon-cheddar burger. Bar and lounge only.

Earls Kitchen + Bar Prudential

Earls Kitchen + Bar Prudential

800 Boylston St #107, Boston, MA 02199, USA

A big Canadian-chain restaurant in the Prudential Center with a year-round rooftop patio and a menu wide enough for a group that can't agree. The 9pm window, Sunday to Thursday, makes it one of the few Back Bay deals after a late show or game. Details: Mon–Fri, 3–6pm; Sun–Thu, 9pm–close. $7 fish tacos, $10 crispy chili tofu, $14 crispy rice sushi, $16 petite steak frites. Lounge and patio only.

STK Steakhouse

STK Steakhouse

222 Berkeley St, Boston, MA 02116, USA

A high-energy, dressed-up steakhouse near Copley Square with the widest schedule on this list: an afternoon window every day, running to 6:30pm on weekdays, and a late window five nights a week. It works as the start of a night out rather than a quiet drink. Details: Mon–Fri, 2:30–6:30pm; Sat–Sun, 2:30–5:30pm; Sun–Thu, 10pm–close. $3, $6 and $9 bites. Bar, lounge and patio.

Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar Fenway

Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar Fenway

61 Brookline Ave, Boston, MA 02215, USA

A taqueria and oyster bar that saves its deals for late night, which suits a night that starts after a Red Sox game or a late shift. Monday is the oyster night; Tuesday is the taco night. Details: Mon–Tue, 10pm–12:30am. $1 oysters Monday, half-price tacos Tuesday.

South End Happy Hours

The South End is the best neighborhood for a happy hour that turns into a night out: two tapas bars with clear pricing and an oyster deal that runs all day Monday.

Barcelona Wine Bar

Barcelona Wine Bar

525 Tremont St, Boston, MA 02116, USA

A Spanish wine bar on Tremont Street where the happy-hour snacks come bundled, so three plates for $14.50 is an easy opening order for two. Patatas bravas, croquetas and a spinach-chickpea cazuela are on the list, so a mixed table, vegetarians included, can share. Details: Mon–Fri, 4–6pm. One snack $5.50, two $10, three $14.50.

Estragon Tapas

Estragon Tapas

700 Harrison Ave, Boston, MA 02118, USA

A Spanish tapas bar with a 5–7pm window, one of the few on this list built for people who work until 5. Space in the bar and lounge is limited, so a group should get there near the start. Details: Mon–Thu, 5–7pm. $6 tapas. Bar and lounge only, first come, first served.

Black Lamb

Black Lamb

571 Tremont St, Boston, MA 02118, USA

A South End brasserie with a daytime oyster deal every day of the week. Monday is the reason it's here: the deal runs all day, which makes it the rare oyster special that still works at 8pm. Details: Daily, 11am–5pm; all day Monday. $2 chef-selected oysters.

South Boston, East Boston, Charlestown and Brighton Happy Hours

These are neighborhood picks: the place to go if you live nearby or are already in the area.

Local 149

Local 149

149 P St, South Boston, MA 02127, USA

A City Point neighborhood pub with a cheap special every weekday, so it works as a Monday dinner as well as a Friday after-work stop. Trivia runs Monday and Tuesday nights at 7pm. Bono Restaurant & Catering

Bono Restaurant & Catering

271 Meridian St, East Boston, MA 02128, USA

A Latin American restaurant on Meridian Street with two happy hours every day, which makes it Eastie's easy default for an early or a late bite. The bar runs on fresh-fruit cocktails, and the house horchata turns up in one of them. Details: Daily, 3–6pm and 9pm–close. $8 baskets and apps: popcorn chicken, fried shrimp, tostadas, papa loca, nachos. Bar only.

Warren Tavern

Warren Tavern

2 Pleasant St, Charlestown, MA 02129, USA

Built in 1780 and named for Dr. Joseph Warren, this Charlestown tavern counts Paul Revere among its early regulars. The weekday oyster deal runs until 6pm, and the pub menu is there if a snack turns into dinner. Details: Mon–Fri, 3–6pm. $1 oysters.

Tasca

Tasca

1612 Commonwealth Ave, Brighton, MA 02135, USA

A Spanish restaurant on Comm Ave with $5 tapas early in the week, cheap enough that ordering one more plate is never a debate. It's an easy low-key date or catch-up in Brighton. Details: Mon–Wed, 4–6pm. $5 tapas from the separate special menu.

Happy Hours in Cambridge, Somerville and Brookline

These eight are outside Boston proper and worth the trip. Harvard Square alone covers three plans: a cheap dinner, early oysters and late oysters.

Grendel's Den

Grendel's Den

89 Winthrop St, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA

A Harvard Square pub that takes half off everything on the food menu, every day, until 7:30pm. Because nothing is limited to a short snack list, everyone orders what they want, which makes it the best cheap dinner on this list. Details: Daily, 5–7:30pm. Half off all food with a $5 drink minimum per person.

Grafton Street

Grafton Street

59 John F. Kennedy St, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA

An Irish-style pub and grill with the square's early oyster window. Parking in the Harvard Square garage upstairs is validated after 4pm, which is rare enough around here to be worth knowing. Details: Mon–Fri, 4–6pm. $1 local oysters.

Russell House Tavern

Russell House Tavern

14 John F. Kennedy St, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA

The late-night oyster stop, starting when nearly every other deal on this list has ended. It gives a show, a dinner elsewhere or a long night in the square one more stop. Details: Sun–Thu, 9–11pm; Fri–Sat, 10pm–midnight. $1 oysters. Excludes special events and selected holidays.

Althea

Althea

2 Columbia St, Cambridge, MA 02139, USA

Vialé's sister restaurant, a short walk away on the ground floor of the 907 Main hotel, with a raw bar, smoked dishes and a big seasonal patio. Oysters run until 6pm every day, so you can start here and still make Vialé before its 7pm cutoff. Details: Daily, 2–6pm. $1 oysters.

Vialé

Vialé

502 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA 02139, USA

A Central Square Italian restaurant built around handmade pasta, with $1 oysters every day until 7pm. A dozen oysters and a bowl of pasta is an easy weeknight dinner. Details: Sat–Thu, 5–7pm; Fri, 4–7pm. $1 oysters, dine-in only.

The Painted Burro

The Painted Burro

219 Elm St, Somerville, MA 02144, USA

A Mexican restaurant in Davis Square and a break from the oyster deals elsewhere on this list. Weekends are the better bet; the weekday window is a single hour. Details: Mon–Fri, 5–6pm; Sat–Sun, 3–5pm. Half-price appetizers.

Posto

Posto

400 Assembly Row, Somerville, MA 02145, USA

An Italian restaurant at Assembly Row with half-price starters in the bar and lounge. With a 5pm finish, it fits around shopping or an early finish at work, not an after-work drink. Details: Mon–Fri, 2–5pm. Half-price appetizers, bar and lounge only.

Punch Bowl

Punch Bowl

700 Brookline Ave, Brookline, MA 02446, USA

A hotel restaurant inside the Hilton Garden Inn with an oyster deal every afternoon, and the only Brookline pick on this list. It's a simple stop before dinner, any day of the week. Details: Daily, 3–5pm. $1.25 oysters; ends when dinner service starts.

Make the Most of It

Pick the time before the neighborhood. If you leave work at 5:30pm, start with the deals that run to 7pm or later. The 3–5pm oyster windows are for a day off or an early finish.

Sit where the deal is. Many offers are bar or lounge only, and a dining-room reservation can put you in the wrong room. Vermilion, Estragon and Black Lamb seat the bar first come, first served.

Arrive mid-window. Showing up ten minutes before the cutoff leaves little time to find a seat and order.
