Boston's best holiday shopping is spread across a handful of walkable neighborhoods, so pick one and give it an afternoon. Beacon Hill is the classic, with books, kitchen gifts, paper and chocolate along a few blocks of Charles Street. Coolidge Corner in Brookline is the one we'd pick for getting a whole list done.

For a market day, head to Snowport in the Seaport or SoWa in the South End. In December, Harvard Square has two markets on overlapping weekends. This guide covers 45 shops and markets across Boston, Cambridge, Brookline and Somerville, plus three routes. One tip: clothing is exempt from Massachusetts sales tax on the first $175 of each item. Updated November 2026.

Three Boston Shopping Routes

Pick one and leave time for a meal.

Beacon Hill, about two to three hours. Walk up Charles Street from Blackstone's to Flat of the Hill, Beacon Hill Books and Beacon Hill Chocolates, then finish at December Thieves and Rugg Road. Go Tuesday to Saturday so Flat of the Hill is open.

Coolidge Corner, about two to three hours. Start at Brookline Booksmith, then hit Maruichi Select, Boston General Store and Fire Opal on Harvard Street. Finish at Eureka! on Beacon Street.

Harvard Square, about two to three hours. Start at Harvard Book Store, then Cardullo's and Cambridge Artists' Cooperative. On December 11–13 or 18–20 add the Holiday Fair, and on December 12–13 or 19–20 add the Black Business Holiday Marketplace.

Before You Go

Pick one neighborhood. One good cluster makes a better afternoon than five famous stores across the city.

Check holiday hours. Hours here are regular hours unless noted, and many shops change them in December. Several close one day a week.

Buy food last. Save chilled items and chocolate for the end of the day, and keep them out of warm bags.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best holiday shopping in Boston?
Beacon Hill is the classic pick for a walk, and Coolidge Corner in Brookline is our pick for getting a whole list done. Back Bay is best for brands and indoor shopping, and the South End is strong for handmade work.
When are Boston's holiday markets in 2026?
Snowport runs November 6–December 27 and SoWa runs November 20–December 27. The Harvard Square Holiday Fair is December 11–13 and 18–20, and the Black Business Holiday Marketplace is December 12–13 and 19–20.
Is Snowport or SoWa better for shopping?
Snowport is free and outdoors, with more food, drinks and things to do. SoWa is indoors and costs $10, and it's the better pick for handmade gifts. Neither is open on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day, and SoWa is closed Mondays.
Where can I buy gifts made in Boston?
Start with Trove on Tremont and Boston Public Market, then try the maker markets. A local shop doesn't mean every item was made here, so ask about the piece you're buying.
Where can I shop indoors when the weather is bad?
The Prudential Center, Copley Place and Boston Public Market are the easiest year-round options, and SoWa is indoors during its season. Bow Market's shops are indoors, but you'll walk outside between them.
Where can I shop on Christmas Eve in Boston?
Snowport closes at 6 and SoWa closes at 4. Neighborhood shops often close early too, so call first. Fire Opal in Coolidge Corner, for example, closes at 3.
Where can I find gifts on a smaller budget?
Used books at Brattle or More Than Words are a good start. Cards from Albertine Press or Rugg Road, a small food gift or a puzzle from Eureka! also work well.
