San Francisco isn't a city where you can wander into any neighborhood at 12:30 a.m. and assume dinner will sort itself out. The places that do stay open cover more ground than you'd expect, though: foil-wrapped Mission burritos, bubbling Korean stews, ramen after a show, diner breakfasts, burgers, Indian-style pizza and a few bar kitchens worth ordering from.
Everything here is sorted by when the kitchen stops cooking, not when the bar stops pouring. If it's already past 1, start with the after-2 a.m. list; if you want a real dinner around 11, skip to the midnight section. Hours shift, especially after 1 a.m. and on Sundays, so check the same-day schedule before crossing town.
If it's earlier than you think and you'd rather eat on a deal, start with our San Francisco happy hours guide instead.

Food Open After 2 A.M. in San Francisco
The places to know when dinner has turned into an after-midnight emergency. Most of these keep cooking until 3 a.m. or later on at least some nights.

El Farolito
2779 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA
The default answer when a night in the Mission ends with everyone realizing they forgot to eat. Meats get a good char on the plancha, the burritos are big without falling apart, and the super quesadilla is exactly the kind of excess that makes sense at 2 a.m. Bring cash to be safe, and expect a line once the bars let out. Details: 2779 Mission St · Until 3 a.m.; 3:30 a.m. Thu–Fri; midnight Sun

Cocobang
550 Taylor St, San Francisco, CA 94102, USA
A real sit-down restaurant at an hour when most of the alternatives come in a wrapper. The room stays loud and the menu is built for passing plates: Korean fried chicken, corn cheese, seafood pancake, tteokbokki and bubbling stews. On Friday and Saturday it's the best bet in the city for a full group meal after 2. Details: 550 Taylor St · Until 2 a.m.; 4 a.m. Fri–Sat

Grubstake Diner
1525 Pine St, San Francisco, CA 94109, USA
An old railcar diner a block off Polk, built for the table where one person wants pancakes, another wants a burger and someone else wants pie and a milkshake. Alongside the breakfasts and cheesesteaks there's a Portuguese section, and the caldo verde is the move on a foggy night. It doesn't open until evening, so this is strictly a night-owl stop. Details: 1525 Pine St · Opens 6:30 p.m. · Until 3 a.m.; 4 a.m. Thu–Sat

HINODEYA Ramen Union Square
219 O'Farrell St, San Francisco, CA 94102, USA
A steaming bowl of ramen beats another slice when the fog's rolled in. HINODEYA's broth is a light dashi rather than pork-heavy tonkotsu, there's a creamy vegan bowl, and the gyoza come with a little cup of dashi for dipping. It's a few minutes' walk from the Theater District, which makes it the easy post-show call. Details: 219 O'Farrell St · Until 1:30 a.m.; 3:30 a.m. Fri–Sat

Taishan Cuisine
781 Broadway, San Francisco, CA 94133, USA
Late-night Chinese food that still feels like dinner: claypot rice, roast chicken, noodle soups, chow fun and stir-fries rather than a short snack menu. It's the strongest full-meal option once the North Beach bars start winding down. Note the 3–5 p.m. break most days, and Thursday is dinner only. Details: 781 Broadway · Until 3 a.m. nightly

Bollywood Pizza
215 Fremont St #2B, San Francisco, CA 94105, USA
Indian-style pies make this a lot more interesting than the usual emergency slice: butter chicken, tandoori chicken, paneer and lamb kebab, with halal meats and vegetarian and vegan pies every day. Open until 4 a.m. every night, it's a lifeline in SoMa and Rincon Hill once the office crowd has gone home. Details: 215 Fremont St · Until 4 a.m. nightly

Big Apple Pizza N Grill
127 Eddy St, San Francisco, CA 94102, USA
Come for the chopped cheese, which they take seriously enough to make several versions of, on a hero or a roll. Pizza, cheesesteaks, burgers, wings and halal rice plates fill out the rest. It's not an elegant evening, but it's a few blocks from Union Square and still cooking at 2:45. Details: 127 Eddy St · Opens 2 p.m. · Until 3 a.m. nightly

Pizza Zone N Grill
178 Valencia St #1116, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA
The late-night utility player near Market and Valencia: slices and whole pies, wings, cheesesteaks, burgers and sandwiches. It's set up mainly for pickup and delivery, so order ahead rather than planning to sit down. Not a destination, but very handy when it's 2:30 and you need something hot. Details: 178 Valencia St (at Duboce) · Until 3 a.m. nightly

Panchita's Pupuseria #2
3091 16th St, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA
A Mission fixture since 1989, making thick griddled pupusas with cheese, beans, pork and loroco. Order a few to share with curtido and salsa, then add plantains if you're still hungry. It only runs late on weekends, and after 1 a.m. it's takeout only. Details: 3091 16th St · Until 11 p.m.; 2:30 a.m. Fri–Sat

24-Hour Restaurants in San Francisco
San Francisco has very few true all-night spots left, and two of these three only go around the clock on certain days. Check the day before you count on them.

Orphan Andy's
3991 A 17th St, San Francisco, CA 94114, USA
Red stools, booths, neon and a menu big enough to cover a solo tuna melt, pancakes after the Castro Theatre or chicken-fried steak at an unreasonable hour. It's been the neighborhood's after-bar living room since the 1970s and changed hands this summer, with the new owner keeping it running overnight. The Monte Cristo, patty melt and a milkshake are the classic order. Details: 3991 17th St · 24 hours Tue–Sat; until 9:45 p.m. Sun–Mon

Pinecrest Diner
401 Geary St, San Francisco, CA 94102, USA
A straightforward downtown diner that's been on this corner since 1969: omelets, pancakes, burgers, sandwiches and eggs-and-potatoes plates. It works just as well for a quiet solo meal as for a tired group coming out of the bars around Geary. Don't assume it's all-night early in the week. Details: 401 Geary St · 24 hours Wed–Sat; until 11 p.m. Sun–Tue

Bob's Donuts
1720 Polk St, San Francisco, CA 94109, USA
The answer for a huge apple fritter, a warm glazed or a dense buttermilk bar after the Polk Street bars close. Bob's moved one block in 2025 from its original storefront into a bigger shop with more seating, and it still never closes. Not dinner, but the city's most dependable late-night sweet. Only the Polk Street shop is 24 hours. Details: 1720 Polk St · 24 hours daily
Late-Night Food Until 1 or 2 A.M.
These won't carry you to sunrise, but they open up a lot more of the city between midnight and 2, including the west side, where late options are thin.

Beep's Burgers
1051 Ocean Ave, San Francisco, CA 94112, USA
A drive-up burger stand that's been on Ocean Avenue since 1962, neon rocket sign and all. Get a cheeseburger, the garlic fries the local teens swear by and a Twinkie shake. It's the obvious stop near City College and the southwest corner of the city. Details: 1051 Ocean Ave · Until 2 a.m. nightly

Uncle Boy's
245 Balboa St, San Francisco, CA 94118, USA
A neighborhood burger counter with cheeseburgers, fried chicken sandwiches, onion rings and a decent veggie burger. It's the Inner Richmond answer when you don't want to cross town. Early-week hours are less predictable, so check before a Monday or Tuesday run. Details: 245 Balboa St · Until 2 a.m. Thu–Sun

The Popular Izakaya
704 Post St, San Francisco, CA 94109, USA
The former Public Izakaya, now running under a new name a door down. It's a casual Japanese spot for drinks and small plates a short walk from the venues on Post and Geary. Go with a few friends and order a spread rather than one dish each. Details: 704 Post St · Until 2 a.m.; closed Wed

Pho De Nguyen
501 6th St, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA
A proper bowl of broth and noodles does a lot of good at the end of a long night. Go for the pho dac biet or the oxtail pho. This is a weeknight play: it closes before midnight on Saturday, so don't plan a weekend 1 a.m. visit around it. Details: 501 6th St · Until 2 a.m. Mon–Fri; 11:45 p.m. Sat

Sam's Burgers
618 Broadway, San Francisco, CA 94133, USA
A tiny flat-top counter that's been feeding Broadway since 1966. Hot cheeseburger, fries and a stool at the counter, nothing more needed. On Friday and Saturday it's the most reliable thing to eat in North Beach at 1:30. Details: 618 Broadway · Until midnight; 1 a.m. Thu and Sun; 2 a.m. Fri–Sat

Taqueria Guadalajara
4798 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94112, USA
Out past the Mission's main burrito corridor, with generous super burritos, super quesadilla suiza, tortas and nachos. The al pastor has serious local fans. Lines are usually shorter and seats easier to find than at the busiest Mission counters. Details: 4798 Mission St · Until 1 a.m.; later Fri–Sat

Toyose
3814 Noriega St, San Francisco, CA 94122, USA
Hidden in a converted garage, Toyose is one of the west side's most memorable late group meals: seafood pancake, kimchi fried rice, whole fried chicken and doenjang stew. The kitchen closes a little before the doors do, so get there by 1 on weekends. Details: 3814 Noriega St · Until midnight; about 1:30 a.m. Fri–Sat

Bay Pocha
2642 Ocean Ave, San Francisco, CA 94132, USA
One long communal table and a menu made for passing dishes around: corn cheese, fried chicken wings, kimchi fried rice, pancakes, stews and bulgogi. It's at its best with six or eight people who want a real meal together. Note the afternoon break between lunch and dinner. Details: 2642 Ocean Ave · Until midnight; 1 a.m. Fri–Sat

Sunset Indian Cuisine
642 Irving St, San Francisco, CA 94122, USA
A welcome break from burgers and pizza near Ninth and Irving, with Indian and Himalayan cooking: curries, tandoori dishes, biryani, momos and naan. Vegetarians have plenty to choose from. Details: 642 Irving St · Until 1 a.m. nightly

Mr Szechuan
890 Taraval St, San Francisco, CA 94116, USA
For spice and substance after midnight: dry pots, chili wontons, mapo tofu, dan dan noodles and chile-heavy meat and fish dishes. Bring a few people so you can share across the menu, and aim to order by about 12:30. Details: 890 Taraval St · Until about 12:30 a.m. nightly
Late Dinner in San Francisco: Kitchens Open Until Midnight
For 10:45 or 11 p.m., when you still want a proper dinner or a bar with food worth ordering. Several of these bars keep pouring after the kitchen closes, so the times below are the food cutoffs. ABV and Horsefeather also appear in our bars for people in their 30s and first-date bars guides, if you want the full picture of either room.

ABV
3174 16th St, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA
One of the safest picks for a serious cocktail and an actual dinner in the same place. The room is relaxed but busy, and the compact menu holds up on its own rather than feeling like bar snacks. There are no reservations, so expect a wait on weekend nights. Details: 3174 16th St · Kitchen until midnight nightly; bar until 2 a.m.

Horsefeather
528 Divisadero St, San Francisco, CA 94117, USA
The late night that still feels like a date. Order the double cheeseburger, the fried chicken sandwich, the Korean crispy wings or the umami fries to go with a good cocktail. On weekends the kitchen runs to 1 and the bar to 2. Details: 528 Divisadero St · Kitchen until 11:30 p.m.; 1 a.m. Fri–Sat

Tempest and Box Kitchen
431 Natoma St, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA
A true dive bar whose Box Kitchen turns out a better burger than it has any right to, plus a fried chicken sandwich, potato skins, popcorn chicken and tacos. Walk-ins are welcome. It's a few blocks from Moscone Center and Yerba Buena, which makes it handy after a conference day. Details: 431 Natoma St · Kitchen until midnight nightly; bar until 2 a.m.

Old Ship Saloon
298 Pacific Ave, San Francisco, CA 94111, USA
A rare late-night food option on the edge of FiDi, in one of the city's historic pubs. Chicken mole nachos, smoked cod fish tacos, burgers and sandwiches are the orders. It's the right stop when dinner has quietly turned into one more drink. Details: 298 Pacific Ave · Kitchen until about 1 a.m.; bar until 2 a.m.

King's Thai Cuisine #2
346 Clement St, San Francisco, CA 94118, USA
Approachable Thai noodles, curries, fried rice and soups on Clement, served until midnight seven nights a week. It's casual and easy for a group that can't agree on anything else. Details: 346 Clement St · Until midnight nightly

Muukata6395
4217 Geary Blvd, San Francisco, CA 94118, USA
Thai tabletop barbecue on a domed charcoal grill ringed by a moat of broth: meat sizzles on top while vegetables, mushrooms and fish balls simmer around the edge. It's best with a group, when dinner is the evening's main event. There's a lunch service too, with a break before dinner. Details: 4217 Geary Blvd · Until midnight nightly

Brazen Head
3166 Buchanan St, San Francisco, CA 94123, USA
An old-fashioned hideaway with almost no sign out front, low light and plenty of booths. French onion soup, prime rib sliders, burgers, steak and classic desserts all fit the mood. There are no reservations, and the bar keeps going late after the kitchen closes. Details: 3166 Buchanan St · Kitchen until 11 p.m. Sun–Tue; midnight Wed–Sat

That's It Market
2699 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA
It looks like a corner liquor store, but half of it is a tortaria known for a giant Cubana torta stacked with several meats, cheese and plenty of toppings. There are a few seats, but plan on takeout. Get there well before midnight if you want the torta, since the counter's cutoff isn't posted. Details: 2699 Mission St · Store open until midnight; 2 a.m. Fri–Sat
