The best holiday shopping in Chicago isn't one long march up Michigan Avenue. For gifts with personality, start in Andersonville or Lincoln Square. For the classic festive outing, head to the Loop. And for a serious maker-shopping day, put One of a Kind on the calendar.

This guide covers holiday markets, independent gift shops, bookstores, food gifts and the big-brand trips worth making, from a small host present to something worth saving for. Pick one area and give it an afternoon, then add a market only if its dates fit your day.

Holiday Markets Worth Shopping

These five are the markets where the shopping itself justifies the trip. Daley Plaza and Wrigleyville are the ones for atmosphere, One of a Kind is the serious gift run, Randolph Street is for vintage and Renegade is for anyone still shopping a week before Christmas. Our Chicago Christmas markets guide has the full list. Friday, November 20 is the busiest start to the season: Christkindlmarket opens at both sites and the city tree lights that evening, with the ceremony at 6 p.m. It's fun, but it's no way to get a gift list done. If you do go that night, the tree and the rest of the free downtown displays are in our Chicago Christmas lights guide.

Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza

Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza

50 W Washington St, Chicago, IL 60602, USA

This is Chicago's classic Christmas market, and the one to pick when the day should feel unmistakably like Christmas. Come for ornaments, seasonal decorations and something warm to drink. It's better as a festive browse than as a place to finish a long list, and a weekday daytime visit gives you more room to shop. Details: Nov 20–Dec 24. Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Sun–Thu 11 a.m.–8 p.m. Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Free admission. 50 W Washington St.

Christkindlmarket Wrigleyville

Christkindlmarket Wrigleyville

3635 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60613, USA

Gallagher Way is the easier pick when the North Side suits your day, and it's the one market that keeps going after Christmas. The mix leans toward ornaments and small seasonal gifts, and the setting outside Wrigley Field does a lot of the work. Some of the Winterland attractions around it cost extra. Details: Nov 20–Dec 31, closed Dec 25. Mon–Thu 3–9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.–7 p.m. Thanksgiving, Dec 24 and Dec 31 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Dec 21–23 and 28–30 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Free market admission. 3635 N Clark St.

One of a Kind Holiday Show

One of a Kind Holiday Show

222 W Merchandise Mart Plaza, Chicago, IL 60654, USA

Our first choice for a serious maker-shopping day. Jewelry, ceramics, art, textiles and specialty goods all sit under one roof, so you can compare without crossing the city. Go with a list and a budget, and give it real time. You won't get much out of skimming the aisles on the way to dinner. Details: Dec 3–6. Thu–Sat 10 a.m.–7 p.m., Sun 10 a.m.–5 p.m. $15, good for all four days; under 12 free. 7th floor of THE MART, 222 Merchandise Mart Plaza.

Randolph Street Holiday Markets

Randolph Street Holiday Markets

1340 W Washington Blvd, Chicago, IL 60607

Go here when the best gift is something nobody else will be carrying. Vintage clothing, jewelry, antiques and decorative pieces make it a different trip from a new-goods craft fair. Shop with the person's taste in mind, and be ready to decide on the spot when you find a one-off. Details: Nov 14–15 and Dec 12–13. Sat 10 a.m.–7 p.m., Sun 10 a.m.–5 p.m. $19 online, $20 at the gate; under 12 free. Free parking in the lot. 1340 W Washington Blvd.

Renegade Craft: Chicago Winter

Renegade Craft: Chicago Winter

1200 W 35th St, Chicago, IL 60609, USA

Renegade is the late-December answer when you still want a gift to feel chosen. Independent artists and makers fill Bridgeport Art Center, with a Friday evening session plus the weekend. It's the winter fair in Bridgeport, not the summer one in Wicker Park. Details: Dec 18–20. Fri 5–8 p.m., Sat–Sun 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Indoors. Suggested $5 entry. Bridgeport Art Center, 1200 W 35th St.

Loop and Michigan Avenue Shops

The Loop is the classic holiday outing, and Michigan Avenue is where the familiar brands make a complicated list easier. The museum shops are the secret here: they're the best bet downtown for something that doesn't look bought in a hurry. For a drink after, see our guide to Chicago's Christmas bars and pop-ups. Macy's Santaland runs on the fifth floor through December 24; our where to see Santa in Chicago guide covers how booking works.

Macy's on State Street

Macy's on State Street

111 N State St, Chicago, IL 60602, USA

For the old-fashioned downtown shopping day, start in the historic Marshall Field's building. Fashion, beauty and home are all here, and the rest of the Loop's holiday stops are close by. It's the right anchor when your list includes familiar brands. Details: Santaland runs through Dec 24. The Walnut Room is a separate reservation. 111 N State St.

BUDDY

BUDDY

78 E Washington St, Chicago, IL 60602, USA

This small shop inside the Chicago Cultural Center sells work by local artists, from prints and publications to jewelry and small objects. It's the antidote to a generic souvenir, and an easy add to Daley Plaza and Macy's. Details: Daily 11 a.m.–5 p.m., closed holidays. 1st floor south, Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E Washington St.

Art Institute Museum Shop

Art Institute Museum Shop

111 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60603, USA

A good museum shop lets you buy for someone's interests, not their clothing size. Come for art books, collection-inspired accessories and gifts that nod to the famous lions, especially for the person who'd rather unwrap a beautiful book than another scented candle. Details: Mon, Wed and Fri–Sun 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Thu 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Closed Tuesdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. 111 S Michigan Ave.

Chicago Architecture Center Design Store

Chicago Architecture Center Design Store

111 E Wacker Dr, Chicago, IL 60601, USA

For someone who loves Chicago's buildings as much as its food, this is an easy place to get the gift right. The shelves lean toward architecture, city history and design, and there's plenty for curious kids. Take a look at the river while you're there. Details: 111 E Wacker Dr. Second Design Store at the Marquette Hub, 136 S Dearborn St, open Wed–Sat 11 a.m.–6 p.m.

P.O.S.H.

P.O.S.H.

613 N State St, Chicago, IL 60654, USA

P.O.S.H. is for the host who already has enough wine glasses but would love a really good one. Vintage hotel silver, restaurant china and European finds sit alongside new pieces, so a small serving piece or odd little cup looks collected, not ordered in bulk. Details: 613 N State St.

The Shops at North Bridge

The Shops at North Bridge

520 N Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60611, USA

Sometimes the best holiday shopping is just getting the list done. North Bridge gives you familiar retailers and a break from the cold, with Nordstrom as the anchor. Pair it with a museum shop for something more personal. Details: Stores stay open during the center's makeover. 520 N Michigan Ave.

Garrett Popcorn Shops

Garrett Popcorn Shops

625 N Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60611, USA

A popcorn tin isn't the most obscure Chicago gift, and that's the appeal. It works for an office, a household or a host, and this shop fits a Michigan Avenue day without a detour. Details: 625 N Michigan Ave.

MCA Store

MCA Store

220 E Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60611, USA

The MCA Store is the answer when "something interesting" is the entire brief. Artist products, design objects, jewelry, books and playful gifts give you more room to surprise someone than a department store does, and you don't need a museum ticket to shop. Details: Closed Mondays. No museum admission needed; use the store entrance at Chicago Ave and Mies van der Rohe Way. 220 E Chicago Ave.

900 North Michigan Shops

900 North Michigan Shops

900 N Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60611, USA

At the north end of Michigan Avenue, 900 suits a polished, brand-led day. Bloomingdale's and the building's boutiques give you an indoor start, and Oak Street is nearby for more luxury browsing. It's the route for a specific designer wish list, not a bag of stocking stuffers. Details: Mon–Sat 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Sun noon–6 p.m. Bloomingdale's Mon–Sat 10 a.m.–8 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.–7 p.m. 900 N Michigan Ave.

Andersonville and Lincoln Square Shops

These are the two best neighborhoods for independent gift shopping. Andersonville is our all-around pick, with local art, books and Chicago gifts along Clark Street around Foster. Lincoln Square is the tighter walk, and it's especially good for home gifts, kids and small luxuries. A weekday or Saturday works best there, since Merz closes Sundays. In Andersonville, the Swedish American Museum's Julmarknad adds a holiday market on December 4–6.

Andersonville Galleria

Andersonville Galleria

5247 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60640, USA

Start here when the list is long and the people on it have little in common. Independent artists and small businesses share one address, with art, jewelry, home goods and clothing to browse. It's the quickest way into Andersonville if you can't spend the whole afternoon on Clark Street. Details: 5247 N Clark St.

Transit Tees

Transit Tees

5226 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60640, USA

Chicago references work best when they feel like an inside joke, not airport merchandise. Transit Tees turns the city's trains, neighborhoods and food into shirts, prints, games and small gifts. It's an easy answer for someone who moved away, a new Chicagoan or the friend with strong opinions about their train line. Details: 5226 N Clark St. Also at 1371 N Milwaukee Ave, Wicker Park.

Foursided

Foursided

5061 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60640, USA

Foursided is where to go when a gift needs a little more personality. Cards, artwork, vintage finds and small objects make it good for stocking stuffers and hosts, and for finishing off a present properly. Details: 5061 N Clark St.

Women & Children First

Women & Children First

5233 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60640, USA

A book becomes a better gift when it comes with a reason you chose it. This feminist independent bookstore is a natural stop for fiction, children's books and LGBTQ+ writing, and it's a great place to shop with one person in mind. Details: Closed Nov 26–27. 5233 N Clark St.

Cowboys and Astronauts

Cowboys and Astronauts

1478 W Summerdale Ave, Chicago, IL 60640, USA

For the person who insists they don't need anything, try a useful upgrade. Cowboys and Astronauts mixes menswear with accessories, home pieces and gifts, so a good hat is the easy move when you know someone's style but not their measurements. Details: 1478 W Summerdale Ave, just off Clark.

Gethsemane Garden Center

Gethsemane Garden Center

5739 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60660, USA

Gethsemane adds something different to an Andersonville day: plants, garden-minded gifts and a gift shop for the friend who cares about their windowsill and holiday table. It's a walk north of the main cluster, so do it first and work south. Keep any plant covered on the way home. Details: 5739 N Clark St.

Midwest Nice

Midwest Nice

4619 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL 60625, USA

Midwest Nice is where we'd look for a gift that says something about the person getting it. Art and independently made goods set it apart from a general gift store, and a print can be a far more personal buy than another candle. Details: 4619 N Lincoln Ave.

Neighborly

Neighborly

4710 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL 60625, USA

Neighborly is an easy recommendation for someone with good taste and a small apartment. Home goods, artwork, pottery and stationery lean toward the handsome everyday object, which makes it great for hosts and new homeowners. Details: 4710 N Lincoln Ave. Also at 1554 N Milwaukee Ave, Wicker Park.

ENJOY, An Urban General Store

ENJOY, An Urban General Store

4723 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL 60625, USA

When the assignment is "fun, useful and not wildly expensive," start here. Socks, games, cards and kitchen novelties make it the place for office exchanges, stocking stuffers and the last few people on your list. Details: 4723 N Lincoln Ave. Also at 5307 N Clark St, Andersonville.

Merz Apothecary

Merz Apothecary

4716 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL 60625, USA

Merz is the pick for a small luxury someone will actually use. Its shelves make soap, bath products and grooming essentials feel like proper gifts. Fragrance is personal, so go with a bath or body gift unless you know exactly what they like. Details: Closed Sundays. 4716 N Lincoln Ave.

Timeless Toys

Timeless Toys

4749 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL 60625, USA

This is the stop for a child whose interests deserve more thought than a big-box aisle. Games, puzzles and imaginative toys give you plenty of directions to go. Bring the child's age, a rough budget and one thing they're excited about. Details: 4749 N Lincoln Ave.

West Town, Logan Square and Lincoln Park Shops

Think of these as separate outings, not one walk. Pick the shops that suit your list and build around one area. Mondays are a bad day for this side of town, with Virtu and Katherine Anne's Armitage shop both closed.

Paperish Mess

Paperish Mess

1945 W Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60622, USA

Paperish Mess rewards paying attention to the person on your list. Original art and independent goods sit alongside cards, candles and smaller objects, so there's room for a meaningful present and a finishing touch. It's great for the friend who notices illustration and packaging. Details: Tue–Fri noon–6 p.m., Sat 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.–5 p.m. 1945 W Chicago Ave.

Komoda

Komoda

2448 W Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60622, USA

Komoda works when you want something personal without buying clothing: jewelry, scent, soaps and other small luxuries with more character than a prepacked holiday set. Pair it with Paperish Mess, farther east along Chicago Avenue. Details: 2448 W Chicago Ave.

Virtu

Virtu

2035 N Damen Ave, Chicago, IL 60647, USA

Virtu is a good place to slow down and choose one meaningful thing. Artisan jewelry, ceramics and handmade objects suit a significant present, not a frantic stocking-stuffer sweep, so come for someone whose taste you know well. Details: Closed Mondays. 2035 N Damen Ave.

Festive Collective

Festive Collective

2643.5 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60647

Some people want a restrained holiday palette. Others want the ornament that makes everyone laugh. Festive Collective belongs to the second camp, with celebratory décor, party supplies, cards and playful gifts for a colorful holiday home. Details: 2643.5 N Milwaukee Ave, across from the Logan Theatre.

Katherine Anne Confections

Katherine Anne Confections

2745 W Armitage Ave, Chicago, IL 60647, USA

This is the stop for a chocolate gift that feels considered. Truffles, caramels and marshmallows make an easy host present or thank-you, and a warm drink turns the pickup into a nice little outing. Details: 2745 W Armitage Ave, closed Mondays. Also at 3653 W Irving Park Rd.

Art Effect

Art Effect

934 W Armitage Ave, Chicago, IL 60614, USA

Art Effect is the Lincoln Park answer to a varied list. Clothing and accessories sit alongside home, kitchen and baby gifts, plus Hanukkah as well as Christmas items, and the surrounding blocks of Armitage are good for more browsing. Details: 934 W Armitage Ave.

The Spice House

The Spice House

1512 N Wells St, Chicago, IL 60610, USA

A good spice gift is practical without being dull. This is our pick for the home cook, the serious griller or the friend who hosts often and already owns the equipment. A small set built around how they actually cook beats the biggest box on the shelf. Details: Mon–Sat 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Sun 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving. 1512 N Wells St, Old Town.

Pilsen and Hyde Park Shops

Both neighborhoods deserve their own afternoon, not a token stop after a North Side day. Pilsen is especially good for craft and food gifts, and Wednesday through Saturday is the window if you want Chocolat Uzma. Hyde Park is the natural choice for readers, and it works best Tuesday through Saturday, when both bookstores are open.

Chocolat Uzma

Chocolat Uzma

917 W 18th St Ste 101, Chicago, IL 60608, USA

Chocolat Uzma is the pick for someone who'd appreciate a familiar gift with a different flavor story. South Asian-inspired combinations set its small-batch chocolate apart. Make it the first stop of your Pilsen day, because it closes early. Details: Wed–Sat 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. through the fall; December hours can change. 917 W 18th St, Suite 101, enter on 18th Street.

Mestiza

Mestiza

1444 W 18th St, Chicago, IL 60608, USA

Mestiza is a strong stop for a gift with color, craft and personality. Its art, jewelry and home goods take you somewhere different from a conventional holiday shop, whether you want something small or a piece to display. Details: Mon–Fri 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Sat–Sun 11 a.m.–5 p.m. 1444 W 18th St.

Tienda Tzintzuntzán at the National Museum of Mexican Art

Tienda Tzintzuntzán at the National Museum of Mexican Art

1852 W 19th St, Chicago, IL 60608, USA

The museum's shop makes it easy to pair a good gift with an afternoon of art. Browse Mexican craft, textiles, jewelry, books and smaller objects. Museum admission is free, which makes this one of the nicest stops of the season. Details: Tue–Sun 10 a.m.–5 p.m., closed Mondays. Free admission. 1852 W 19th St.

The Silver Room

The Silver Room

1506 E 53rd St, Chicago, IL 60615, USA

The Silver Room is the place to start a Hyde Park gift run when the person you're buying for cares about accessories and personal style. Jewelry and design-minded pieces make it a different kind of stop from the neighborhood's bookstores. Details: 1506 E 53rd St.

57th Street Books

57th Street Books

1301 E 57th St, Chicago, IL 60637, USA

For a reader, an unhurried browse can be half the pleasure of holiday shopping. This is the Hyde Park stop for general reading, children's books, mysteries, science fiction and cookbooks, and the easier start when you're buying for several ages and tastes. Details: Tue–Fri 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Sat–Sun 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Closed Mondays and Thanksgiving. 1301 E 57th St.

Seminary Co-op Bookstore

Seminary Co-op Bookstore

5751 S Woodlawn Ave, Chicago, IL 60637, USA

Seminary Co-op is for someone who'd happily spend an afternoon following a subject from one book to the next. Its literary and scholarly focus suits history readers, academics and anyone whose wish list runs more niche than the holiday bestseller stack. Details: Mon–Fri 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Sat 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Closed Sundays and Thanksgiving. 5751 S Woodlawn Ave.

Suburban Malls and Outlets

These two are for a big brand-shopping day, and neither belongs on a neighborhood route.

Fashion Outlets of Chicago

Fashion Outlets of Chicago

5220 Fashion Outlets Way, Rosemont, IL 60018, USA

Go when outlet shopping is the point of the trip, especially if Rosemont or O'Hare already fits your plans. It's all indoors and heavy on designer names. Compare the actual item and final price before assuming the outlet tag is the best deal. Details: Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Black Friday 6 a.m.–9 p.m., Christmas Eve 9 a.m.–6 p.m. First three hours of parking are free, then $21 up to 12 hours. 5220 Fashion Outlets Way, Rosemont.

Woodfield Mall

Woodfield Mall

5 Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg, IL 60173, USA

Woodfield makes sense when you need a broad range of familiar stores and want to stay indoors all day. It's a conventional mall, not an outlet center, and a separate suburban outing, so save the neighborhood shops for another day. Details: Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Black Friday 6 a.m.–9 p.m., Christmas Eve 8 a.m.–6 p.m. 5 Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg.

Three Chicago Shopping Routes

Pick one and leave time for a meal.

The classic Loop afternoon. Start at Macy's for the department-store list, walk to Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza, then pick up something more personal at BUDDY or the Chicago Architecture Center Design Store. Allow three to four hours. The market runs through December 24.

Andersonville, gifts for almost everyone. Foursided, Transit Tees, Women & Children First, Andersonville Galleria, then Cowboys and Astronauts just off Clark. Add ENJOY for a small-gift sweep, or start at Gethsemane and work south if you're buying plants. Allow three to four hours, and skip Women & Children First on November 26–27.

Pilsen, chocolate first. Get to Chocolat Uzma before it closes, then head west for Mestiza and the shop at the National Museum of Mexican Art. Allow about three hours, Wednesday through Saturday, and leave time for the museum itself.
