Chicago has a Santa for every kind of family, from the full Macy's production on State Street to a free hotel-lobby hello and a ride on a decorated train. The right one depends on what you're after: a good photo, a festive meal or a whole day out.

Macy's Santaland is where we'd start for the classic version. Bass Pro and Cabela's give you a free printed photo, Lights Festival Lane has free photos downtown on November 21, the Marshall Field's Walnut Room is the big breakfast, and the Illinois Railway Museum is the one for train kids.

All dates are for 2026, and we last checked everything in November 2026. Timed visits fill early, so book as soon as you've picked one.

Where to See Santa in Downtown Chicago

Downtown has the big names: Macy's on State Street, the Magnificent Mile, and hotel and museum visits you can fit around a day in the Loop. If you're making a meal of it, our guide to Chicago's most festive Christmas restaurants has more ideas.

Macy's Santaland

Macy's Santaland

111 N State St, Chicago, IL 60602, USA

Macy's is the classic Chicago Santa visit, and State Street makes it easy to build a morning around it with the holiday windows and a walk through the store. Book a slot, head to the fifth floor and plan on a line, because your reservation is when you join the queue. Pets aren't allowed, though service animals are. Details: Nov. 7–Dec. 24, Friday–Sunday through Nov. 22, then daily. Free to visit; photo packages from $44.99. Reservations release seven days ahead at 6:30 a.m. Central. Floor 5, 111 N. State St.

Marshall Field's Walnut Room Breakfast with Santa

Marshall Field's Walnut Room Breakfast with Santa

111 N State St, Chicago, IL 60602, USA

Santa and Mrs. Claus join a festive buffet in one of Chicago's best-known holiday dining rooms, so this is the one to book when the meal matters as much as the meeting. It's a separate booking from Santaland, so leave a good gap if you're doing both. Pick Breakfast with Santa when you reserve, not the regular Great Tree breakfast. A table right by the tree isn't guaranteed. Details: Sundays Dec. 6, 13 and 20, 8:15–11 a.m. $49.95 adults, $29.95 ages 12 and under, ages 2 and under free, plus tax and gratuity. Credit card required to hold the table. Floor 7, 111 N. State St.

Santa at 900 North Michigan Shops

Santa at 900 North Michigan Shops

900 N Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60611, USA

This is the one to book when the picture's the whole point. The vintage sleigh and sparkling pine-tree set look more like a holiday portrait than a mall photo stop, and the digital photo lands in your email. Kids get a plush toy while supplies last. Days can fill up, so don't wait. Details: Nov. 21–Dec. 24. $55, including a digital photo. Level 3, 900 N. Michigan Ave. Parking is $13 for three hours when you validate at the Santa set; the garage entrance is on Rush Street.

The Langham, Chicago

The Langham, Chicago

330 N Wabash Ave, Chicago, IL 60611, USA

The Langham's second-floor lobby gets you a Santa visit with no tickets, no reservation and no need to be a hotel guest. It's an easy stop on a downtown walk, and it's the rare Santa who's still around on Christmas Day. On Dec. 25, the hotel's Frost and Feast Christmas Brunch (11 a.m.–5 p.m., reservations required) includes a Santa visit for kids too. Details: Dec. 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 24 and 25. Free lobby visit. Your ticket covers the museum too, so stick around afterward. Santa Days are the splurge: an elf-led tour of the decorated Santa Suite, a visit with Santa, hot cocoa, holiday treats, crafts, face painting and a letter-writing station. At $60 a person it's more of an outing than a photo stop, so it's best with kids old enough to enjoy all of it. Details: Nov. 27, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; Dec. 4 and 18, 3–6 p.m. $60 per person, under 2 free. 323 E. Upper Wacker Dr.

Santa at Skydeck Chicago

Santa at Skydeck Chicago

233 S Wacker Dr, Chicago, IL 60606, USA

Skydeck's a good call if you've got visitors in town or older kids who've outgrown a mall photo, because the view does most of the work. Regular Santa photos run all season, and there are two bigger versions: Santa on The Ledge and a Santa lunch. Use the visitor entrance on Jackson Boulevard. Details: Photos Nov. 14–Dec. 24, closed Thanksgiving, hours vary by day; admission and photos sold separately.
