Best Cozy Bars in Chicago: Fireplaces & Hidden Lounges
Fireplace pubs, library rooms, candlelit cocktail bars and old taverns worth settling into.

Run a business in this guide, or want yours added? Get in touch.
A cozy bar gives you a reason to stay for another round: a fireplace worth sitting beside, a booth you can sink into, a room quiet enough to talk. Chicago has plenty of them, and they matter a lot more once the temperature drops.
This guide covers 42 cozy bars across the city, from fireplace pubs and library rooms to candlelit cocktail bars, hotel lounges and unpretentious taverns, plus five more worth knowing. They're grouped by neighborhood, and each one comes with where to sit and how to get a seat.
One thing to know: a fireplace in the room doesn't mean it's lit every night, or that you'll get the seat next to it. If the fire is the point, call ahead and go early.

More Cozy Bars in Chicago Worth Knowing

2833 W Armitage Ave, Chicago, IL 60647, USA
A dark restaurant-bar with black walls, a liquor wall with a rolling ladder and a menu that runs from burgers to oysters. No reservations.

Fireside Restaurant & Lounge

A Mediterranean-leaning wine and apéro bar for an earlier, lighter evening. Walk-ins are welcome, and tables for two book on Tock.
How to Get the Coziest Seat
Go early. Fireside seats, booths and couches go first, and most of these rooms are at their best before the late crowd arrives. Weeknights are easier than weekends.
Ask for the room. At Wilde and Lady Gregory's that's the library, at After it's the Sound Booth and at Scofflaw it's the back parlor. Several fireplace rooms, including The Galway Arms, Ten Cat Tavern and The Getaway, also book for private parties, so check before you go.
Check the calendar. Live music, trivia and DJ nights change the feel of a room, and Billy Sunday's Tuesday silent reading is a different evening altogether.
