Santa Cruz works differently from most college towns. The campus sits on 2,000 acres of redwood forest and meadow on a hillside above the city, and almost everything in this guide except the campus landmarks is down in town, a bus ride or a short drive away. The areas to know are downtown along Pacific Avenue, where most of the restaurants and bars are; the Westside along Mission, Swift, and Ingalls Streets, which is closest to the campus entrance and holds the breweries; and the beach and Boardwalk stretch along Beach Street and West Cliff Drive, where most of the hotels sit. Everything below is organized so you can find what you need fast.

Santa Cruz dining concentrates downtown along Pacific Avenue and the blocks around it, where students, locals, and visitors all end up. The Westside along Mission Street carries a few of the long-running breakfast institutions, and the beach end has the casual lunch spots. Almost nothing is walkable from the colleges themselves, so plan on the bus or a car.

Santa Cruz nightlife splits between Pacific Avenue downtown, which carries the music venues and the late crowd, and the Westside industrial blocks off Swift and Ingalls Streets, where the breweries and the distillery bar sit. The Westside is the calmer, more parent-friendly end and the one closest to the campus entrance. Note that UCSC has no football team, so there's no game-day bar rush here the way there is in most college towns.

Nothing in Santa Cruz is walking distance from the UCSC colleges, so the question isn't how close you can get to campus, it's which part of town you want to wake up in. The beach and West Cliff hotels give you the ocean and the Boardwalk; the Ocean Street and downtown properties put you closest to the restaurants and bars; and the Mission Street hotels sit on the road that runs out toward the campus entrance, which shortens the morning drive up the hill. Commencement weekend in June and move-in in late September clear the closest rooms first.

UCSC is spread across a wooded hillside rather than arranged around a single quad, so a first visit is more of a drive-and-walk than a loop. These seven give you the shape of the place, from the first college built in 1965 to the meadow that sells the campus better than any brochure.
