UC Berkeley Guide: Where to Eat, Drink & Stay (2026)

Whether you're a Cal student still working out your Telegraph rotation, an incoming Golden Bear learning the city, a parent in for move-in, an alum back for the Big Game, or a prospective student getting a feel for campus, this guide pulls together the restaurants, bars, hotels, and campus landmarks worth knowing near UC Berkeley.

Berkeley rewards knowing three streets. Shattuck Avenue runs the downtown side, west of campus and sitting right on top of BART. Telegraph Avenue runs south from Sather Gate and carries the student end of things. North Shattuck, about a mile north, is where the city's food reputation was built. Nearly everything below sits in one of those three, and with San Francisco roughly half an hour away by train, most visitors here get through a whole trip without a car.

The map splits three ways. Telegraph and the Durant blocks carry the cheap, fast student food. Downtown Shattuck holds most of the sit-down dinners and sits next to BART. North Shattuck, roughly a mile north and long nicknamed the Gourmet Ghetto before the merchants' association retired the term in 2019, is where Chez Panisse and the Cheese Board built Berkeley's food reputation. One warning that catches more visitors than anything else: several of the best rooms here close two days a week, and not the days you'd expect.

Berkeley's nightlife is smaller than the size of the student body suggests, and it sorts cleanly by who you're with. Telegraph and Durant hold the student rooms and the late closes. Downtown Shattuck runs older and calmer, with the brewpub, the music room, and the cocktail bar you'd take a parent to. Cal moved to the ACC in 2024, so home football weekends now pull a different set of visiting fans into town.

Four positions, and the choice is mostly about how far you want to walk. Durant Avenue puts you against the south edge of campus. Downtown puts you next to BART and the restaurants. University Avenue is the value play a mile out, and the Berkeley Hills is the splurge with the view. Book early for mid-May commencement, the second half of August for move-in, Cal Day in April, and home football Saturdays, especially Big Game against Stanford at Berkeley on November 21, 2026. Worth knowing before you book: there is no free parking in Berkeley, street meters cap at two hours, and the university itself tells visitors to take BART.

Berkeley's historic core is compact and almost entirely walkable from Sather Gate, which makes a self-guided loop easy to do in an afternoon. These six run from the south entrance up through the old center of campus and out to the stadium on the east edge. Doe Library and the Campanile both welcome visitors, so check hours before you go.
