Whether you're a UC Davis student still working out your downtown rotation, an incoming Aggie learning the town, a parent in for move-in, an alum back for Picnic Day, or a prospective student getting a feel for campus, this guide pulls together the restaurants, cafés, bars, hotels, and campus landmarks worth knowing near UC Davis.

Davis makes this easy in a way most college towns don't. Downtown sits directly against the north edge of campus, close enough that the walk from the Quad to a restaurant table takes about ten minutes. Nearly everything below is inside that walkable core, clustered on G Street, E Street, and the numbered streets between them. The handful of exceptions are called out as such, and this being the most bike-friendly city in the country, a bike closes most of those gaps faster than a car.

Best Restaurants Near UC Davis

Downtown Davis carries almost all of this, and the geography is refreshingly simple: 3rd Street runs the casual student end, D and E Streets hold the sit-down dinners, and G Street mixes food into the bar strip. Everything here is walkable from campus except Taqueria Guadalajara, which sits north on Covell. Two coffee houses are grouped in at the end of this section, because in Davis they function as much as places to eat as places to caffeinate.

Taqueria Guadalajara

Taqueria Guadalajara

640 W Covell Blvd, Davis, CA 95616, USA

No-frills taqueria on West Covell, north of downtown. The kind of place students go for cheap, fast Mexican food rather than atmosphere, and the one restaurant here you'll want wheels for.

Zia's Delicatessen

Zia's Delicatessen

616 3rd St, Davis, CA 95616, USA

Sandwich counter on 3rd Street between campus and downtown, best used as a quick lunch stop rather than a sit-down meal.

The college pizza place on G Street, right in the middle of the bar strip. Cheap way to feed a group before or after a night out.

Ali Baba

Ali Baba

220 3rd St, Davis, CA 95616, USA

Student shorthand in Davis for a cheap breakfast burrito, handed over fast at the counter on 3rd Street. Not a place for a nice meal, and that's the point.

The Mustard Seed

The Mustard Seed

222 D St #11, Davis, CA 95616, USA

The obvious choice when you want a proper dinner without leaving downtown Davis, doing California cooking in a small dining room. Worth booking ahead on big weekends.

Guads Tacos & Beer

Guads Tacos & Beer

231 3rd St, Davis, CA 95616, USA

Downtown taqueria on 3rd Street turning out tacos and Mexican plates with beer alongside. Doors open at 8am, so it also covers an early meal before a campus tour.

Delta of Venus

Delta of Venus

122 B St, Davis, CA 95616, USA

An independent coffee house going since 1993, with a patio, regular live music, and a Caribbean dinner menu on weeknights. Brunch runs every morning, and it's one of the more distinctly Davis places on this list.

Mishka's Café

Mishka's Café

610 2nd St, Davis, CA 95616, USA

Downtown Davis's main independent coffee shop and a reliable place to sit and work for an hour. Good first stop before a campus tour.

Best Bars Near UC Davis

Davis nightlife is a short walk and a narrow map. G Street holds the student bars, with Wunderbar and Woodstock's a few doors apart, and Three Mile Brewing tucked into the same block. The calmer rooms sit a street or two over, and Sudwerk is the one worth the trip east. Note that this is a college town without a big football Saturday economy, so the busiest nights are ordinary weekends and Picnic Day rather than game days.

Featured bars to check out

G St Wunderbar

G St Wunderbar

228 G St, Davis, CA 95616, USA

The G Street dive most UC Davis students have a story about. Cheap drinks, bar games, and a crowd that skews young.

Sudwerk Brewing Co.

Sudwerk Brewing Co.

2001 2nd St, Davis, CA 95618, USA

Brewing German-style lagers in Davis since 1989, out on 2nd Street with a big patio, and the grown-up option when downtown feels too undergrad. Draws alumni and locals, and it's about a mile and a half east of the core, so bike or drive.

University of Beer - Davis

University of Beer - Davis

615 3rd St, Davis, CA 95616, USA

Long tap list and plenty of TVs on 3rd Street, which makes it the default for watching a game with a group. Loud when something's on.

Froggy's

Froggy's

726 2nd St, Davis, CA 95616, USA

A downtown bar and grill that pulls a genuinely mixed crowd of undergrads and Davis locals, with no cover and a kitchen putting out burgers and sandwiches. DJ, trivia, and karaoke nights depending on when you turn up.

Wiki Bar

Wiki Bar

234 D St, Davis, CA 95616, USA

A small cocktail bar tucked in beside Cafe Bernardo downtown, better suited to a quiet drink than a loud night out. The house pour is the Wiki Wacky Woo, and it's the easiest recommendation here for parents.

Three Mile Brewing Co.

Three Mile Brewing Co.

231 G St Ste 3, Davis, CA 95616, USA

An independent Davis brewery with a small taproom just off G Street, brewing on site since 2016. Easy place for a relaxed pint if the student bars a few doors down aren't what you're after.

Best Hotels Near UC Davis

Davis has a small hotel market, and the choice comes down to three positions: on campus, downtown, or south of the freeway. Hyatt Place sits on campus itself at the Old Davis Road entrance. The downtown cluster puts you in the middle of the restaurants and a ten-minute walk from the Quad. Hyatt House is further out but the only one with full kitchens. Move-in, graduation, and Picnic Day weekend clear the close-in rooms first, and Picnic Day in particular fills the whole town.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best restaurants near UC Davis?
It depends on the occasion. Students run on Ali Baba for breakfast burritos, Woodstock's for pizza, and Burgers and Brew when a group needs feeding. Parents tend toward The Mustard Seed for a real dinner, Mikuni for sushi, or Cafe Bernardo when the timing is awkward. Crepeville and Delta of Venus are the brunch answers. Almost all of it is downtown and walkable from campus.
Where do UC Davis students eat on campus?
First-years mostly eat at the dining commons, which are all-you-care-to-eat and tied to the residence areas: Segundo, Tercero, and Cuarto. Everyone else gravitates to the Coffee House in the Memorial Union, student-run since 1968 and now seven counters feeding around 7,000 people a day, with the Quad as its front lawn. Latitude, near the Tercero halls, is the other one worth knowing, splitting its menu across Latin American, Asian, European, and Indian and Middle Eastern stations, and it takes a card at the door rather than requiring a meal plan. The Silo covers quick counter food, a market, Peet's, and rotating food trucks. One caveat for summer visitors: Segundo and Cuarto close between quarters, so on-campus options thin out considerably.
Where do UC Davis students go out?
Mostly G Street and the blocks around it. G St Wunderbar is the student dive, Froggy’s pulls a mixed crowd with no cover and a kitchen, and University of Beer is where a group ends up to watch something. The calmer end runs to Wiki Bar for a cocktail and Three Mile Brewing for a quiet pint, with Sudwerk out east when you want a patio and a bit of distance from undergrads.
Where should parents stay when visiting UC Davis?
Hyatt Place if being on campus matters, since it sits at the Old Davis Road entrance by the Mondavi Center. The downtown cluster, meaning the Best Western Plus Palm Court, Aggie Inn, and Hilton Garden Inn, puts restaurants at the doorstep and campus a ten-minute walk away. Hyatt House is the one to book when a family needs a kitchen for several nights. The closest rooms go first on big weekends.
Is the area around UC Davis walkable?
Unusually so. Downtown Davis runs right up against the north edge of campus, and nearly every restaurant, bar, and hotel in this guide sits inside that core. Taqueria Guadalajara on Covell, Sudwerk on 2nd Street, and Hyatt House in south Davis are the exceptions. Davis is also the most bike-friendly city in the country, the first to earn platinum status from the League of American Bicyclists, so a rental bike covers the gaps easily.
What is Picnic Day and should I plan around it?
Picnic Day is UC Davis's annual open house each April, one of the largest student-run events in the country, drawing north of 70,000 people for a parade, exhibits, and a full day of campus events. It's free and genuinely worth seeing, but it's also the single hardest weekend of the year to get a hotel room or a restaurant table in Davis. Book months out or plan a different weekend.
Do you need a car when visiting UC Davis?
Not for most of a visit. Downtown and campus are walkable, Unitrans runs buses through town including a few restored London double-deckers, and Amtrak's Capitol Corridor stops downtown with direct service from Sacramento and the Bay Area. A car helps if you're staying in south Davis, heading to Sudwerk, or making a day trip into wine country.
What should I see when visiting UC Davis?
Start on the Memorial Union Quad to get the shape of campus, walk past Shields Library on its north edge, then find the Stargazer Egghead by North Hall for the obligatory photo. Head south toward Old Davis Road for the Manetti Shrem Museum, which is free, and the Mondavi Center next door. Save real time for the Arboretum, which is the thing most visitors remember. Downtown is a ten-minute walk north whenever you want lunch.
