St. John's University Guide: Where to Eat, Drink & Stay in Queens (2026)
Find the best restaurants, bars, cafes, hotels, and campus landmarks near St. John's University in Queens, NY, with a saveable map for students, parents, and visitors.

St. John's Queens campus sits on 105 acres at 8000 Utopia Parkway, in Hillcrest, with Fresh Meadows on one side and Jamaica Estates on the other. It is a genuinely residential corner of Queens, which shapes everything about a visit: the food immediately around the gates is a compact strip of family-run restaurants on Union Turnpike, and the nightlife is somewhere else entirely.
This guide covers where to eat, where to get coffee, where to drink, where to stay and what to see, for the trips people actually make here. A campus tour with a high school junior, move-in weekend, a parent visit in the middle of term, commencement, or an alumni return for a Red Storm game at Carnesecca. It is weighted toward what is close first, then out to Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, Bayside and Flushing, which is where the neighborhood opens up.
Best Restaurants Near St. John's
Almost everything within a ten minute walk of campus is on one stretch of Union Turnpike between 176th and 190th Street, and it is better than it has any right to be. This is a heavily commuter campus with a large kosher and halal student population, and the strip reflects that: a kosher steakhouse, a kosher dairy room, kosher barbecue, halal Bangladeshi a few blocks south. A short trip to Flushing opens up one of the best food neighborhoods in the country, and students make it regularly.
Restaurants

Sup Thai Kitchen
178-19 Union Tpke, Fresh Meadows, NY 11366, USA
Thai street food a seven minute walk from the north side of campus, and the nearby sit-down that works equally well for a study break or a family dinner. The kitchen runs to 10:15 on Friday and Saturday, later than most of the strip.

Nikko Hibachi
177-21 Union Tpke, Fresh Meadows, NY 11366, USA
Tableside hibachi with the chef cooking in front of you, plus a sushi bar and lounge. Banquet space seats up to 150, so this is the default when somebody's birthday needs an audience.

Regina's Pizzeria
176-49 Union Tpke, Flushing, NY 11366, USA
The neighborhood slice shop on Union Turnpike, open daily until 10. Nothing reinvented here, just a dependable pie between classes or on the walk back to the residence village.

Yummy Taco
177-09 Union Tpke, Flushing, NY 11366, USA
Tacos, burritos and combo plates at student prices, from a place that leans into being the St. John's option. Closed Mondays, and it doesn't open until noon.

Double J Deli
168-02 Union Tpke, Flushing, NY 11366, USA
Sandwich counter with 37 specialty heroes before you reach the wraps and cheese steaks, opening at 6am for anyone with an early class. Closer to a 15 minute walk than the 177th Street cluster.

Umi Sushi
177-13 Union Tpke, Flushing, NY 11366, USA
Small sushi counter on the same block as most of the campus regulars, better suited to a quiet dinner for two or three than a big group. Rolls, sashimi and reliable takeout.

Prima Di Carne
178-01 Union Tpke, Fresh Meadows, NY 11366, USA
Glatt kosher steakhouse and sushi bar that took over the old Acquista Trattoria corner in 2025, and the most polished dinner within walking distance of campus. Closed Fridays, so plan parent weekends around it.

Pho Real Viet Kitchen
61-09 Utopia Pkwy, Fresh Meadows, NY 11365, USA
Pho, banh mi and rice bowls about a mile up Utopia Parkway, far enough that it's a deliberate trip rather than a default. Worth the walk in January.

Cooked Klean
188-16 Union Tpke, Fresh Meadows, NY 11366, USA
Bowls, salads, pressed sandwiches and smoothies from a counter that also sells weekly meal plans, which is genuinely useful if you're cooking for one. Closed Sundays.

POSH - Café & Restaurant
190-21 Union Tpke, Fresh Meadows, NY 11366, USA
Kosher dairy restaurant doing pizza, pasta and sushi in a room a step up from the counter-service places nearby. Stays open Saturday nights until 1am, which fills a real gap on this stretch.

Chief Smokehouse
180-10 Union Tpke, Fresh Meadows, NY 11366, USA
Kosher Texas-style barbecue about as close to the campus edge as food gets, built around brisket and smoked wings. New enough that it's worth checking hours before you walk over.

Sagar Restaurant
168-25B Hillside Ave., Jamaica, NY 11432, USA
Halal Bangladeshi and desi cooking down on Hillside Avenue in Little Bangladesh, cheap and generous in a way the Union Turnpike strip isn't. A short walk from the south end of campus.

Nan Xiang Soup Dumplings - Flushing
39-16 Prince St #104, Flushing, NY 11354, USA
The soup dumpling name everyone in Flushing sends you to first, and the anchor for a food trip students actually make. Order the pork xiao long bao and give them a minute to cool.

New World Mall
136-20 Roosevelt Ave, Flushing, NY 11354, USA
Basement food hall with a couple of dozen regional Chinese stalls, which is the right answer when a group has fifteen dollars each and four different opinions. Open late.

The Hindu Temple Society of North America
45-57 Bowne St, Flushing, NY 11355, USA
The Ganesh Temple canteen sits in the basement here, serving South Indian vegetarian food where a dosa costs less than a sandwich. Closer to campus than Flushing's Main Street, and the building is as much of a reason to go as the food.
Best Bars Near St. John's
Worth being straight about this one: there is no bar within walking distance of campus. The Sly Fox Inn on Union Turnpike, which filled that role for decades, has closed, and the blocks around the gates are residential. Everything below is a drive, a bus or a rideshare, and it clusters in three directions. Kew Gardens and Forest Hills are about three and a half miles west, Bell Boulevard in Bayside is roughly four miles north, and two nearer options sit about a mile and a half out. New York is 21 to drink, and most of these run very late.
Bars

Austin's Ale House
82-70 Austin St, Kew Gardens, NY 11415, USA
Kew Gardens pub with twenty craft taps, a full bar and a 4am close, which is why it anchors most nights out in this direction. Sort out a rideshare before you go.

Forest Hills Station House
106-11 71st Ave, Forest Hills, NY 11375, USA
Gastropub steps from the Forest Hills LIRR doing cocktails and elevated pub food, and the easiest place to take parents for a drink without it feeling like a student bar.

Cobblestones Pub and Biergarten
117-18 Queens Blvd, Forest Hills, NY 11375, USA
Big Queens Boulevard pub with a beer garden out back, open 9am to 4am seven days a week. There's room for a group that keeps growing.

Tap House
72-07 Austin St, Forest Hills, NY 11375, USA
Austin Street sports bar running to 4am, best treated as one stop on a Forest Hills crawl rather than the whole evening.

Hangar 11 Burgers & Brews
119-11 Metropolitan Ave, Kew Gardens, NY 11415, USA
Burgers first and beer close behind, with karaoke and fight nights running past 3am. Good when half the group wants dinner and the other half wants a bar.

Bourbon Street
40-12 Bell Blvd, Bayside, NY 11361, USA
Cajun kitchen and bar on Bell Boulevard with live bands and Monday karaoke, and the closest thing to a proper night out that Queens offers St. John's students. Treat it as a planned trip.

Fillmore's Tavern
166-02 65th Ave, Fresh Meadows, NY 11365, USA
The closest full bar to campus, in a building that has been a tavern since 1912. Both kitchen and bar shut by 10 or 11, so think dinner-and-a-drink rather than a late one.

One Station Plaza
21310 41st Ave, Bayside, NY 11361, USA
Beer garden and restaurant by the Bayside LIRR with twenty taps, live music and dog-friendly outdoor seating. Pairs naturally with the rest of Bell Boulevard.

PreGame Sports Bar & Lounge
178-23 Hillside Ave., Jamaica, NY 11432, USA
Hillside Avenue sports bar, and the only other drinking option within a mile and a half of campus. Straightforward, and close enough to reach without committing to a night in Forest Hills.
Best Cafes Near St. John's
Set expectations here. The near-campus options are bakeries and dessert counters rather than laptop spots, and most of them close by 7. The places students actually settle into for a few hours are either on campus, at the Starbucks in D'Angelo Center and the library cafe in St. Augustine Hall, or a short drive out. The two genuinely good study cafes are the furthest away, which is the trade.
Cafes

Lulu's Bakery
179-04, 06 Union Tpke, Flushing, NY 11366, USA
Italian bakery for pastries, cakes and a coffee on the way past, with a few tables but not the room for a laptop session. Doors shut at 7.

Insomnia Cookies
176-69 Union Tpke, Fresh Meadows, NY 11366, USA
Warm cookies late into the night, and the chain's first Queens location when it opened in 2025. More of a 1am reward than a study spot.

The Artisan Crepe
177-07 Union Tpke, Fresh Meadows, NY 11366, USA
Sweet and savory crepes plus bubble tea and smoothie bowls, in the space students already knew as the crepe place. Fine for a short sit with a coffee.

Tea Mania New York
82-27 164th St, Jamaica, NY 11432, USA
Boba, mochi donuts and croffles in a room big enough for a group to settle into, which suits hanging out better than a solo work session. Halal.

Matari Coffee Co.
179-30 Hillside Ave., Jamaica, NY 11432, USA
Yemeni coffeehouse on Hillside Avenue, part of a small chain, and the nearest place with genuine coffee-shop atmosphere rather than a counter and two stools. Check hours before a late run.

The Panorama Of My Silence-Heart Cafe
84-73 Parsons Blvd, Jamaica, NY 11432, USA
Vegetarian and vegan cafe run by the Sri Chinmoy community, and about as quiet as Queens gets. Daytime only, 9 to 3, closed Mondays.

Coffee Cloud
138-28 Queens Blvd, Briarwood, NY 11435, USA
Greek coffeehouse in Briarwood with free wifi and seating built for staying a while. It's the one off-campus study spot St. John's itself points students toward. Closes at 6.

GREY Cafe
195-19 Northern Blvd, Flushing, NY 11358, USA
The Torch's pick for studying, with a large room, indoor and outdoor seating and hours that run to 11 most nights. Far enough out that you'd drive or take the bus.

The Oasis Cafe
196-30 Northern Blvd, Flushing, NY 11358, USA
Open to midnight on weeknights and 1am at weekends, with a garden out back and enough seating to spread out. The best late study option in range, and it doubles as a dinner spot.
Best Hotels Near St. John's
One thing to know before you book. St. John's own area-hotel page lists only airport and Manhattan properties, nothing in Fresh Meadows or Flushing, so it is a useful list but a poor guide to what is actually closest. The two Fresh Meadows Marriotts are about a mile and a half from the gate and are the real answer for a campus visit. Everything else is a trade between price, space and how much you care about the airport.
Hotels

Courtyard by Marriott New York Queens/Fresh Meadows
183-15 Horace Harding Expy, Fresh Meadows, NY 11365, USA
The closest hotel to campus at about a mile and a half, and Marriott's own listing names St. John's. No free breakfast here, though the Bistro does grab-and-go and Starbucks.

Fairfield by Marriott Inn & Suites New York Queens/Fresh Meadows
183-31 Horace Harding Expy, Fresh Meadows, NY 11365, USA
Next door to the Courtyard and the better family value, since the hot breakfast is included. Same drive to campus, usually a lower rate.

SpringHill Suites New York JFK Airport/Jamaica
140-35 Queens Blvd, Jamaica, NY 11435, USA
Don't let the name mislead you. This one sits on Queens Boulevard rather than at the airport, which makes it the closest all-suite option to campus when you need the extra room.

Renaissance New York Flushing Hotel at Tangram
133-36 37th Ave, Flushing, NY 11354, USA
The nicest room in the area, attached to the Tangram mall in downtown Flushing with real dining downstairs. This is the one to book for commencement.

Hyatt Place Flushing/LaGuardia Airport
133-42 39th Ave, Flushing, NY 11354, USA
Free breakfast and a walk to downtown Flushing's food and the 7 train, which makes it the pick if you want a day in Manhattan bolted onto the campus visit.

Best Western Queens Gold Coast
220-33 Northern Blvd N/A, Bayside, NY 11361, USA
Bayside option that puts you next to the Bell Boulevard restaurant strip, which beats an airport frontage road for an evening. The strongest non-Marriott choice in range.

Marriott New York JFK Airport
135-25 142nd St, Jamaica, NY 11436, USA
On St. John's own area-hotel list and a sensible base if you're flying into JFK, with a free airport shuttle. Parking is valet only at 55 dollars a day.

Residence Inn by Marriott New York JFK Airport
142-30 135th Ave, Jamaica, NY 11436, USA
Suites with full kitchens and free hot breakfast, which makes it the best of the airport group for a family staying several nights. Also on St. John's list.

New York LaGuardia Airport Marriott
102-05 Ditmars Blvd, East Elmhurst, NY 11369, USA
St. John's lists it, and it works if you're flying into LaGuardia, but the Grand Central Parkway drive stretches badly at rush hour. Book it for flight convenience, not campus access.
St. John's Campus Landmarks
The Queens campus is compact and walkable, and a self-guided loop takes about an hour. The academic core sits around the Great Lawn in the middle, the athletics buildings run along the northern edge near Union Turnpike, and the residence village is to the south. Everything below is a short walk from everything else.
Campus Landmarks

The Great Lawn
80-00 Utopia Pkwy, Jamaica, NY 11439, USA
The central green that the main academic buildings face, and the right place to start a first walk around campus. It's also where the big student events land, including the summer concert.

D'Angelo Center
80-00 Utopia Pkwy, Jamaica, NY 11439, USA
The student life building: 127,000 square feet of classrooms, clubs, a cafeteria and a fourth-floor ballroom, topped by a bell tower with a gold-leaf torch modeled on the Statue of Liberty. Come here to see how the place actually runs day to day.
St. Thomas More Church
80-00 Utopia Pkwy, Jamaica, NY 11432, USA
The university's first freestanding church, opened in 2004, with Italian mosaics, Vincentian stained glass and a 9/11 memorial shrine. Worth stepping inside even if you're not staying for a service.
St. John's University Libraries
80-00 Utopia Pkwy, Jamaica, NY 11439, USA
St. Augustine Hall holds the main library, with a 16-foot university seal set at the entrance. Prospective students should ask about study zones and how busy it gets at peak hours.

Carnesecca Arena
80-00 Utopia Pkwy, Jamaica, NY 11432, USA
Built in 1961 as Alumni Hall and renamed in 2004 for Lou Carnesecca, whose statue stands in the lobby. It seats 5,260 and is the loudest room on campus when the Red Storm are home.

Belson Stadium
80-00 Utopia Pkwy, Jamaica, NY 11439, USA
The 2,168-seat soccer stadium, built on a platform above a mostly underground parking garage, which is a very Queens solution to a very Queens problem. Both soccer programs play here.

Jack Kaiser Stadium
80-00 Utopia Pkwy, Jamaica, NY 11439, USA
The on-campus baseball park at the Utopia Parkway end, and an easy stop to combine with Belson and Carnesecca on an athletics loop.

Taffner Field House
80-00 Utopia Pkwy, Jamaica, NY 11439, USA
The main recreation and athletics building, with the Joe Lapchick statue in the courtyard outside. Useful for a sense of what students actually use week to week.

Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall
Jamaica, NY 11439, USA
One of the more distinctive buildings on campus, tied to the Center for Asian Studies, and a stop most self-guided tours walk straight past.
