A good Halloween night in San Diego doesn't have to mean a wristband, five crowded bars and a costume you regret by 9 p.m. Sometimes the better plan is a proper dinner surrounded by decorations, a cocktail in a room that looks like a crashed spaceship, or an early evening of pizza and Halloween lights by the beach.
Our first picks are Barbarella for a decorated dinner, Cutwater for the biggest food-and-drink takeover, Swan Bar for Halloween cocktails and MOTHERSHIP for something genuinely otherworldly. Below are 14 restaurants and bars worth building an evening around, from seasonal makeovers to places that feel spooky all year, plus the parties worth knowing about from October 29 to 31. The two Carlsbad picks sit in their own North County section, so you can plan them as a separate outing.

Halloween Takeovers: San Diego Restaurants and Bars That Go All Out
These are the places that transform for October, with decorations, themed menus or a full seasonal concept. Most wrap up on Halloween night.

Barbarella
2171 Avenida De La Playa, La Jolla, CA 92037, USA
Barbarella goes all in on Halloween, and its already charming La Jolla Shores dining room gets a much more theatrical personality for the month. It's the rare restaurant where showing up in costume feels normal, even though the main event is sitting down to a good dinner. Most nights that means Italian-leaning coastal cooking: pasta, wood-fired pizza and seafood. On October 31, a limited Halloween à la carte menu replaces the regular one, so book that night knowing your usual order won't be there. Costumes are encouraged. Reserve through OpenTable.

Cutwater House of Spirits
9750 Distribution Ave, San Diego, CA 92121, USA
Cutwater's tasting room becomes House of Spirits through October 31, with full Halloween scenery, themed cocktails and dishes that play along, like ghost-shaped meatballs and a jet-black burger. It's a proper dinner destination, which sets it apart from pop-ups that only pour drinks. There are two ways in. A regular restaurant booking gets you the decorated tasting room and seasonal menu. The Cutwater Crypt is a separate, smaller 90-minute experience at $30 a person, with a welcome shot and a souvenir glass. Book the restaurant for a casual group dinner and the Crypt when Halloween is the whole point of the night.

Nason's Beer Hall: Boos and Brews
570 J St, San Diego, CA 92101, USA
For October, Nason's turns its beer hall into a haunted witches' tavern (Boos and Brews) while keeping the comfort food, big beer list and games that make it easy for a group. It's the low-pressure pick when half your friends want Halloween scenery and the other half just want a beer and something filling. The month's calendar adds movie nights, tarot and parties on specific dates, but the room alone earns the spot. Weekday happy hour runs 3–5 p.m. if you want a cheaper start before the night gets busy.

The Haunting at Swan Bar
2933 Adams Ave, San Diego, CA 92116, USA
Swan Bar's The Haunting is for anyone who wants the Halloween bar itself to be the destination. Vintage Halloween imagery, jack-o'-lanterns and a horror-movie mood fill the room, and the drinks follow suit with names like Widow's Whisper, Poison Apple and Scream-sicle. There are spirit-free options, too. It runs October 2–31, Tuesday through Saturday, 4 p.m. to midnight. It's 21+ and walk-in only, so get there near opening if you want a seat. Plan dinner elsewhere and treat Swan as the cocktail stop.

MOTHERSHIP: The Cocooning
2310 30th St, San Diego, CA 92104, USA
MOTHERSHIP is already set inside a crashed spaceship on an alien planet. For Halloween, The Cocooning adds a creeping growth, eerie sounds and the sense that the ship's surroundings have turned hostile. It's a far more original premise than another haunted mansion. The Cocooning runs October 13 through November 1, with the full food and drink menu plus seasonal cocktails. Reservations are for 90 minutes, walk-in tables are also available, and the kitchen closes at 10 p.m. Expect darkness, lighting effects and unnerving sounds, which is great for some guests and a lot for anyone sensitive to that kind of thing.

Lost Temple Tavern at LandShark
616 J St, San Diego, CA 92101, USA
Lost Temple Tavern swaps graveyards for an abandoned jungle outpost, with tangled vines, expedition relics and skeletal castaways taking over LandShark at the Margaritaville Hotel. The island-style food and Halloween cocktails match the theme, and the whole thing lands closer to a theatrical vacation bar than a horror show. It runs October 10–31 with free entry. DJs start at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and Halloween night adds a roaming character from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. An event RSVP doesn't hold a table, so book separately if dinner matters.

insideOUT: Enchanted Oasis
1642 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92103, USA
Not everyone wants skeletons looming over dinner. insideOUT's Enchanted Oasis fills its open-air space with glowing trees and oversized butterflies, more enchanted garden than haunted house. The California-Mediterranean menu and themed drinks make it a full night out. The installation runs through October 31. Dining is 18+, and table service needs an OpenTable reservation. The cocktail area takes walk-ins for drinks and light bites, but that doesn't guarantee a dinner table.

Spooky Bars and Restaurants in San Diego All Year
These aren't pop-ups. Their permanent rooms already suit Halloween, which also makes them worth knowing once the decorations come down.

Tahona + Oculto 477
2414 San Diego Ave, San Diego, CA 92110, USA
Start with Mexican food and mezcal at Tahona, then slip into Oculto 477, the speakeasy tucked beside the historic El Campo Santo cemetery. You don't need to believe the ghost stories to feel the setting, and no amount of plastic cobwebs can fake it. It's our pick for a slower, more intimate Halloween date. Oculto 477 is reservation-only, and that booking is separate from your Tahona table. Reserve both.

KINDRED
1503 30th St, San Diego, CA 92102, USA
KINDRED is pretty and menacing at the same time: ornate details, pink wallpaper and an enormous many-eyed creature watching over the room. The metal-tinged look is permanent, so it feels slightly unhinged in any month. It's also a serious vegan restaurant, with seitan skewers, plant-based burgers, fried mushrooms and pasta, plus a long spirit-free drinks list. Most seating is walk-in, with some OpenTable reservations, so an empty booking search doesn't mean it's full. MOTHERSHIP, from the same founder, is a short walk away if you want a second stop.

Noble Experiment
777 G St, San Diego, CA 92101, USA
Noble Experiment is the grown-up, low-light alternative to a Halloween party. A hidden entrance and a wall of gold skulls supply all the atmosphere it needs, and it's best for two people who'd rather focus on a great cocktail than shout over a dance floor. Regular seating is walk-in, first come, first served. Parties of four or more should contact the bar ahead. Go earlier in the evening and keep the rest of the night flexible in case there's a wait.

The Lion's Share
629 Kettner Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101, USA
The Lion's Share feels like an eccentric collector's dining room, with animal portraits, taxidermy and dim, moody corners. The menu leans into game meats, so the food is as distinctive as the room. It also solves a Halloween-weekend problem: the kitchen stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and the bar runs until 2 a.m. That makes it one of the most useful late dinners in this guide. Reserve ahead.

Captain's Quarters
910 Grand Ave Ste 105-107, San Diego, CA 92109, USA
Captain's Quarters doesn't need a pop-up to set the mood. Its richly detailed captain's-cabin room feels like a place to settle in for the evening, and October decorations add to it. The menu has proper small plates and sandwiches, so you can make a seated date of it. Book before 10 p.m. if you want to eat. After that, service is walk-in and mostly drinks.
North County: Halloween in Carlsbad
Both of these are early-evening plans in Carlsbad, about 35 miles north of downtown. Treat each as its own outing, not an add-on to a Gaslamp night. Blitzen's goes back to being a Christmas bar the next day; our guide to the best Christmas bars and holiday pop-ups in San Diego has its full season and the rest of the city's.

The Nightmare Before Blitzen's
2100 Costa Del Mar Rd, Carlsbad, CA 92009, USA
Blitzen's is a Christmas bar at the Omni La Costa that takes a Halloween detour, mixing holiday cheer with spooky details, themed drinks and bites. It feels more like a playful resort outing than a late-night bar, and it's ideal for the friend who starts talking about Christmas decorations before Halloween is over. It's open October 29–31 from 6 to 9 p.m. It's open to the public and walk-in only. Arrive near 6 p.m., since the window is short.

The Camp Store
7201 Carlsbad Blvd, Carlsbad, CA 92011, USA
The Camp Store is the family version of Halloween: pizza, an outdoor beachside setting and a light show set to Halloween music. You don't need to be staying at the campground to come. The free light show starts at 6:30 p.m. nightly through Halloween. Dinner service generally runs 4–7 p.m., so order before the show starts. Bring a layer and give yourself time to park.
