San Diego has a beach bar for every kind of afternoon, from a beer on a boardwalk deck in Pacific Beach to fire pits at Hotel del Coronado. The catch is that beachfront, ocean-view and near-the-beach aren't the same thing, so we've labeled every pick by its setting. The guide is organized by area: Pacific Beach and Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, La Jolla and Coronado, and North County.

Pacific Beach and Mission Beach Bars
Pacific Beach and Mission Beach share one boardwalk, so this is where to start if you want a drink with the sand right in front of you. For a classic afternoon, begin at Lahaina, then pick a second stop that suits the group: Baja Beach Cafe for margaritas, Waterbar for a longer sit-down or PB Shore Club for more energy. Crystal Pier, at the foot of Garnet Avenue, is open again after its storm repairs and makes an easy walk between stops.

Lahaina Beach House
710 Oliver Ct, San Diego, CA 92109, USA
The simplest version of a San Diego beach bar: a cold beer, an outdoor deck and the ocean right there. Burgers and tacos give you a reason to stay without making it a meal. It closes earlier than most Pacific Beach bars, with a posted 9 p.m. close.

PB Shore Club
4343 Ocean Blvd, San Diego, CA 92109, USA
A second-story bar over the boardwalk that works as a daytime stop or the start of a night out. The view is wide and the sports screens keep the room loud. Pick it when your group wants energy, and go early if the view matters.

Waterbar
4325 Ocean Blvd, San Diego, CA 92109, USA
The easy answer when everyone agrees on the beach but not on what comes after. Bar seating, communal tables, cocktails and a seafood-focused menu can stretch one drink into dinner. Friday and Saturday service runs much later than the rest of the week.

Baja Beach Cafe
701 Thomas Ave, San Diego, CA 92109, USA
The cheerful pick for oversized margaritas, nachos and a patio right by the sand. The shareable menu suits a group that doesn't want a formal dinner, and brunch is just as good a use of the setting, especially if your day starts with chilaquiles.

JRDN
723 Felspar St, San Diego, CA 92109, USA
Where we'd go when the beach outing should feel more put-together. The oceanfront setting at TOWER23 does the work, with a real cocktail list, a raw bar and surf-and-turf. Stick to the bar for a lighter visit, or book a table for dinner.

World Famous
711 Pacific Beach Dr, San Diego, CA 92109, USA
On the Pacific Beach waterfront since 1970, with seafood, bar specials and a beach view. The weekday specials are served in the bar only, Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to close, so sit there on purpose if that's why you came.

Pacific Beach AleHouse
721 Grand Ave, San Diego, CA 92109, USA
For when the beer matters as much as the view. The Sky Deck looks out over the ocean and the in-house brewery fills the taps. It's a raised deck set back from the boardwalk, so ask for the Sky Deck when you book.

Firehouse
722 Grand Ave, San Diego, CA 92109, USA
A rooftop with ocean views and fire pits that draws a crowd before dark, then turns into a night out with DJs and events. Go when the group wants cocktails and some energy, and check the event calendar for evening visits.

The Beverly Beach Garden
4190 Mission Blvd, San Diego, CA 92109, USA
Rooftop cocktails and ocean views in a more designed, contemporary space on Mission Boulevard. It took over the old El Prez, so search for it by its current name. It's an elevated-view pick, not a boardwalk-front bar.

Draft at Belmont Park
3125 Ocean Front Walk, San Diego, CA 92109, USA
Settles the beach-day argument: the patio handles the sun, the long tap list handles the beer, and the 31-foot indoor screen handles the game. An easy pick for a mixed group; just decide up front whether you want the ocean or the screen.

Cannonball
3105 Ocean Front Walk, San Diego, CA 92109, USA
Sushi, cocktails and open-air ocean views on a rooftop above Belmont Park. Better for a date or a slow afternoon than for a game. Book if you're eating, try the weekday afternoon happy hour for something lighter, or aim for a Thursday acoustic set.

Sandbar Sports Grill
718 Ventura Pl, San Diego, CA 92109, USA
Fish tacos, a full bar and sports, with an upstairs Sky Deck that makes the location worth it. Ask for the Sky Deck by name, since downstairs is a different experience. The venue calls itself family-friendly until 10 p.m.

The Pennant
2893 Mission Blvd, San Diego, CA 92109, USA
A South Mission neighborhood bar with a rooftop deck, for when beach-town character matters more than a front-row ocean view. It's a casual after-the-beach stop, not an oceanfront lounge, and it's 21 and over.

Ocean Beach Bars and Rooftops
Ocean Beach is more laid-back, and most of its best views come from upstairs. Everything here sits near the west end of Newport Avenue, so two stops on foot is easy: start with a rooftop beer at OB Brewery, then head to Wonderland for sunset or The Holding Company if you'd rather end with live music. The OB Pier is still closed, so enjoy it from the shoreline.

Wonderland Ocean Pub
5083 Santa Monica Ave Ste 2B, San Diego, CA 92107, USA
Gets the balance right between a big view and a casual bar. The raised room lets the ocean dominate, the menu stays approachable, and the sunset toast adds a small ritual. Arrive well before sunset if you want a window seat.

South Beach Bar & Grille
5059 Newport Ave, San Diego, CA 92107, USA
Tacos and a drink at the beach end of Newport Avenue, no staging required. The fish tacos are the reason to come hungry. Ask for a view seat since not every table has one, and note that fall and winter closing times vary.

OB Surf Lodge
5083 Santa Monica Ave #1f, San Diego, CA 92107, USA
The daytime counterpart to Wonderland upstairs, with a surf-themed room and patios facing the beach. Best for a late breakfast or lunch that drifts into a drink. It closes at 3:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, so save sunset for later in the week.

OB Brewery
5041 Newport Ave, San Diego, CA 92107, USA
Beer brewed on site and a third-floor rooftop above Newport Avenue. The buildings between it and the water can't build up, so the view is staying put. Come for a neighborhood brewery with a raised outlook, not a beach club.

The Holding Company
5046 Newport Ave, San Diego, CA 92107, USA
Works when the beach is the opening act. The rooftop has ocean views, fire pits and an Asian-fusion menu, and the live-music room gives the night somewhere to go. A table isn't a ticket, so check show times and age policies first.
La Jolla and Coronado Beach Bars
These are the more polished, view-driven picks. In La Jolla, both bars sit a few doors apart on Prospect Street, high above the Cove. In Coronado, both share Hotel del Coronado's address but offer different experiences: Beach & Taco Shack is down on the sand, and Sun Deck is the raised, fire-pit version. There's no need to do both unless you're making a long afternoon of it.

George's at the Cove
1250 Prospect St, La Jolla, CA 92037, USA
The polished end of coastal drinking, with La Jolla Cove below. Pick the open-air Ocean Terrace for an afternoon or sunset meal, or the partly indoor Level2 for more shelter. A standard terrace booking doesn't guarantee an edge table.

Duke's La Jolla Barefoot Bar
1216 Prospect St, La Jolla, CA 92037, USA
A more casual, tropical take on La Jolla: island-inspired food and cocktails over the Cove, no full dinner required. Head upstairs to the Barefoot Bar, not the dining room. The bar menu starts at 3 p.m., which makes it an easy afternoon stop.

Sun Deck at Hotel del Coronado
1500 Orange Ave, Coronado, CA 92118, USA
The indulgent version of a beach day, with ocean views, cocktails, shareable food and fire pits. Good for a date or showing visitors around. Regular service is walk-in only, so arrive with some flexibility.

Beach & Taco Shack at Hotel del Coronado
1500 Orange Ave, Coronado, CA 92118, USA
The literal beach bar: tacos, tropical cocktails, beer and wine served on the sand. Choose it over Sun Deck when being on the beach matters more than a raised view. Live music plays Friday through Sunday afternoons.
North County Beach Bars: Del Mar, Cardiff and Oceanside
Del Mar, Cardiff and Oceanside are their own outings, not stops to tack onto a Pacific Beach crawl. Pick the one closest to where you're staying, or make an afternoon of heading up the coast.

Monarch Ocean Pub
1555 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar, CA 92014, USA
Our North County pick for a sociable bar with a big ocean backdrop, set above the coast in Del Mar Plaza. It doesn't take reservations or validate parking in the plaza garage, so plan for a wait and a parking bill.

Jake's Del Mar
1660 Coast Blvd, Del Mar, CA 92014, USA
The Del Mar pick when being right on the beach matters more than being above it. Floor-to-ceiling windows put the coast front and center. Go for cocktails and the bar specials, or reserve if you're staying for dinner.

Pacific Coast Grill
2526 S Coast Hwy 101, Cardiff, CA 92007, USA
Two levels of bars, decks and patios on the ocean side of Coast Highway, one of the best settings in this guide. A drink here easily becomes oysters, sushi or a full seafood meal, so book a table if you plan to eat.

Cardiff Beach Bar @ Tower 13
2633 S Coast Hwy 101, Cardiff, CA 92007, USA
The relaxed counterpoint to Pacific Coast Grill: a full bar, craft beer, dog-friendly patios and more than 25 TVs. It's across the highway from the sand, so come for the beach-town afternoon and the game, not an ocean panorama.

The Rooftop Bar at Mission Pacific Beach Resort
201 N Myers St, Oceanside, CA 92054, USA
The dressier finish up the coast: lounge seating, cocktails, small bites, DJs and a wide view from the sixth floor of Mission Pacific. A bar visit doesn't include the pool or cabanas, and evening age restrictions apply.
Before You Go
Ask for the part of the venue you want. At Sandbar, PB AleHouse, OB Brewery, George's and Duke's, the view lives in one area: a Sky Deck, a rooftop, a terrace or an upstairs bar. Request it by name, and know that a request isn't always a guarantee.
Give sunset some breathing room. Arrive 45–60 minutes early when the view is the point, and bring a layer for an outdoor table.
