Bozeman is easy to read once you know the two poles. Campus sits about a mile and a half south of downtown, with the student-priced food clustered on West College Street and Tai Lane right at its edge. Main Street holds almost everything else: the breakfast places, the sit-down dinners, the bars, and all but one of the hotels. The Gallagator trail connects the two, Bobcat Stadium and the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse anchor the south end of campus, and Bridger Bowl, Big Sky, and Yellowstone are all close enough that visitors usually try to fit one in.

Eating around Montana State splits cleanly by distance. West College Street and Tai Lane, both a short walk or a two-minute drive from the dorms, carry the cheap and dependable end. Main Street downtown holds the breakfasts, the group dinners, and the meals you book for graduation. One useful thing to know before you plan anything: Bozeman kitchens close early, and most of Main Street stops serving around nine.

Bozeman roasts a lot of its own coffee, and three of the five stops below roast in house. Two sit within a few blocks of campus and two anchor opposite sides of Main Street downtown. One warning worth taking seriously: the latest any of these closes is 6pm, so students working past dinner end up at Renne Library rather than a coffee shop.

Bozeman's drinking geography is simple: one brewery and one sports bar near campus, and everything else on four blocks of Main Street. What trips visitors up is Montana law, not distance. Breweries have to stop serving at 8pm and distillery tasting rooms close at 8 as well, while bars holding full retail licenses run to 2am. That's why Bridger Brewing is an early-evening plan and Main Street is a late one.

This is the part of a Bozeman trip that actually requires planning. The city has roughly 2,535 hotel rooms across 31 properties, which is not much for a town that hosts Cat-Griz, Family Weekend, ski season and Yellowstone traffic. Almost everything below is downtown, a mile and a half from campus, with one exception that sits closer. Montana State publishes a free self-guided walking tour that runs 1.3 miles, 17 stops and about an hour, starting at the Strand Union Building.
