A good Hanukkah donut doesn't need much decoration. Give us tender dough, a generous pocket of jam and enough powdered sugar to make eating it in a dark coat a questionable decision. There's still room on the table for pistachio cream, chocolate and a box of flavors everyone insists on cutting in half.

This guide covers Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, from classic sufganiyot and creative boxes to gluten-free and pareve options. We didn't find a Bronx pick we could stand behind yet.

Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday, December 4, and ends after nightfall on Saturday, December 12. That Friday start matters. Bakeries that close for Shabbat shut early on December 4 and stay closed on December 5 and 12, so get your first-night box in the morning.

Best Hanukkah Donuts in NYC

Classic jelly and mixed boxes come first, followed by the more creative options.

Michaeli Bakery

Michaeli Bakery

115A Division St, New York, NY 10002, USA

Michaeli's strawberry jam sufganiyah is the one to beat: light, traditional and not buried under toppings. Last year's richer fillings included dulce de leche, halva and pistachio, plus sfenj, the Maghrebi-style donut. Details: Lower East Side and Upper East Side. Walk in early, since sales have been first-come, first-served. Both shops are closed Saturdays.

Breads Bakery

Breads Bakery

18 E 16th St, New York, NY 10003, USA

Breads is the easy one-stop box for a gathering. Strawberry is the bestseller, and last year's lineup added chocolate, vanilla, mango and pistachio at every location. Details: Union Square, Lincoln Square, Upper East Side, Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park. Buy in store or use the holiday preorder page when it opens. Breads isn't kosher certified.

Orwashers

Orwashers

308 E 78th St, New York, NY 10075, USA

Orwashers is for anyone who hears "Hanukkah donut" and pictures raspberry jelly under powdered sugar. Its hand-filled donuts are there if someone wants chocolate or a different jam. Details: Upper East Side and Upper West Side. Preorders are open now, with pickup starting Thursday, December 3.

William Greenberg Desserts

William Greenberg Desserts

1100 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10028, USA

This is the host gift that doesn't need explaining: a box of 12 with housemade raspberry jam and powdered sugar. It's one flavor, done well, from a kosher bakery that's been around since 1946. Details: Upper East Side and Upper West Side. It's a Hanukkah-only item, so order once the holiday window opens.

Queens Pita Bakery

Queens Pita Bakery

68-34 Main St, Kew Gardens Hills, NY 11367, USA

If you're in central Queens, start here before planning a trip into Manhattan. Past selections have mixed jelly and cream with halva and caramel, which makes for an easy family box. Details: Kew Gardens Hills. Call 718-263-8000 for larger orders. It's closed Saturdays, so check Friday hours for December 4.

Sababa Bakery

Sababa Bakery

540 Kings Hwy, Brooklyn, NY 11223, USA

Sababa is the value pick, with minis at $2.50 and full-size donuts at $3.50 last year. Strawberry jelly, custard and dulce de leche keep the box familiar, and minis are great after a big dinner. Details: Gravesend. Order online or call 718-382-1100. It closes at 3 p.m. on Fridays and is closed Saturdays.

Fan-Fan Doughnuts

Fan-Fan Doughnuts

448 Lafayette Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238, USA

Fan-Fan makes the most inventive holiday box in the city, and last year's included strawberry-sumac jam and labneh cheesecake with baklava crunch. There was also a box of classics for traditionalists. Details: Bedford-Stuyvesant. Preorder ahead. Last year, Manhattan pickup at Mijo at Pier 57 needed two days' notice. The kitchen handles nuts.

Sesame

Sesame

5024 13th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11219, USA

Sesame has a huge following among Brooklyn's kosher bakery regulars, and a Hanukkah run here is a real event. The range goes from raspberry and caramel to lemon meringue and pistachio. Details: Borough Park and Flatbush. Walk in early, since the full menu has only run for about two weeks. Both shops are closed Saturdays.

Doughnut Plant

Doughnut Plant

379 Grand St, New York, NY 10002, USA

Doughnut Plant's sufganiyot aren't the powdered kind. Last year's were blackberry jam-filled with vanilla bean, marzipan or pistachio glaze, plus a $55 menorah-shaped donut. Details: Lower East Side, Upper East Side, Prospect Heights and Long Island City. Preorder and confirm your shop has them. The regular range is kosher dairy and egg-free.

Dough Doughnuts

Dough Doughnuts

14 West 19th Street at, 5th Ave, New York, NY 10011, USA

Dough's big brioche donuts suit anyone who'd rather have chocolate than jelly. Its Hanukkah boxes change each year, but they've included berry jam alongside chocolate halva and Nutella. Details: Flatiron, Upper West Side and Astoria. Check your branch for this year's box. Regular donuts are kosher dairy.

Taste of Israel

Taste of Israel

1322 Avenue M, Brooklyn, NY 11230, USA

This kosher candy, nut and dried fruit shop isn't a donut cafe, but its owner has made sufganiyot by hand. Last year's fillings ran from jelly and custard to Dubai chocolate, Lotus and Oreo. Details: Midwood. Call 347-554-8133 to ask which fillings are running and how far ahead to order.

Gluten-Free, Pareve and Alternatives

Gluten-free, dairy-free and pareve are different requirements, so match the bakery to the guest and check the exact product if someone has an allergy.

Modern Bread & Bagel

Modern Bread & Bagel

472 Columbus Ave, New York, NY 10024, USA

This is our first stop for gluten-free sufganiyot, with a whole menu that's gluten-free and nut-free. Last year's brioche donuts came filled with raspberry jam or chocolate ganache. Details: Upper West Side, Upper East Side, Midtown East and Chelsea. Preorder online or check your branch, and ask about dairy if that matters.

By the Way Bakery

By the Way Bakery

2440 Broadway, New York, NY 10024, USA

By the Way's small raspberry jam donuts are baked, not fried, so treat them as an alternative to a classic sufganiyah. Everything's gluten-free and dairy-free, but it isn't vegan, since the bakery uses eggs. Details: Upper West Side and Upper East Side. Preorder 24 hours ahead. If you need OK certification, ask for sealed packaging when you order.

My Most Favorite Food

37-22 13th St, Long Island City, NY 11101, USA

This is the pick for planned gatherings that need pareve sufganiyot, in raspberry or apricot, full size or mini. They contain eggs, so they aren't vegan. Details: Long Island City. Preorder online for pickup or delivery. Last year's order window ran only through the holiday itself.

Daily Provisions

Daily Provisions

103 E 19th St, New York, NY 10003, USA

Daily Provisions stretches the definition of a Hanukkah donut, and that's the appeal. Its holiday cruller is jam-filled and rolled in lemon-infused sugar. Details: Union Square and Upper West Side. Look for its return, since regular crullers on the menu don't mean the Hanukkah version is back.

Good to Know

  • Keep at least half the box classic. A few richer fillings go a long way after dinner.
  • Plan on one donut per person. Add a few extras, or buy minis if there's other dessert. For a tasting, cut several flavors into quarters.
  • Pair nearby shops. Michaeli and Doughnut Plant make an easy Lower East Side run. On the Upper West Side, try Orwashers against a Daily Provisions cruller if it's back.
  • Go to Doughnuts Go Global. Fany Gerson and Caroline Schiff give live demonstrations at the Marlene Meyerson JCC on Sunday, December 6, from 7–8:30 p.m., with Pati Jinich moderating. Registration is through the JCC.

Frequently asked questions

What are sufganiyot?
Sufganiyot are the filled donuts eaten at Hanukkah, traditionally fried yeast dough with jelly and a dusting of sugar. The frying ties back to the miracle of the oil. NYC bakeries also fill them with chocolate, custard and nut creams.
When can I buy Hanukkah donuts in 2026?
Orwashers starts pickup on December 3, and other bakeries have typically started within a few days of the first night. Hanukkah runs December 4–12. Shabbat-observant bakeries close early on Friday, December 4, and stay closed on December 5 and 12.
Do I need to preorder?
For a party-size order, yes, wherever it's offered. Michaeli has run first-come, first-served, so plan on arriving early there.
Which bakeries are kosher?
Check the table above. Breads isn't certified, and kosher doesn't always mean pareve, since Doughnut Plant and Dough are kosher dairy.
