A cozy bar makes staying put feel like the plan. Sometimes that's a sofa by a fireplace, sometimes it's a twelve-seat cocktail room, and sometimes it's an old pub where nobody minds if you nurse one beer for an hour.
DC does all of these well. This guide sticks to indoor rooms you'd actually want to linger in, and it tells you which room to ask for, because at half of these places the cozy part is one specific corner of the building.

Cozy DC Bars With Fireplaces
These are the rooms with an actual fire going in cold weather. At most of them the fireplace is in one specific room, so the tip on each card tells you which one to ask for.

Tabard Inn
1739 N St NW, Washington, DC 20036, USA
The lounge is the cozy part: fireplace, mismatched sofas, art on every wall. Ask for the lounge, not a restaurant table. Jazz in the lounge Sunday and Monday evenings.

Chez Billy Sud
1039 31st St NW, Washington, DC 20007, USA
Le Bar à Vin (the wine bar at Chez Billy Sud): wood paneling, a wood-burning fireplace, and the full bistro menu served at the bar. Walk-in only, and a restaurant reservation doesn't cover it. Get there near the 5 p.m. open once it's cold.

600 T
600 T St NW, Washington, DC 20001, USA
A 25-seat rowhouse cocktail bar with a small wood-burning fireplace almost every seat can see. Book indoors if the fire is the point; the heated patio is a different night. Wed to Sat, with jazz nights.

Maison Bar À Vins
1834 Columbia Rd NW, Washington, DC 20009, USA
The Lutèce team's wine bar in a brownstone with five Victorian fireplaces and a 1,000-bottle list. 2026 James Beard finalist for Best New Restaurant. First-floor bar is for walk-ins; back tables take Resy. Closed Mon and Tue.

The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown, Washington, D.C.
3100 S St NW, Washington, DC 20007, USA
The Living Room, the hotel's lounge: exposed brick, deep seating, and a big wood-burning fireplace. Ask for The Living Room by name; Degrees Bistro is a separate restaurant. Opens at 3 p.m.

Iron Gate Restaurant
1734 N St NW, Washington, DC 20036, USA
The dinner pick. The fireplace is in the indoor dining room; the bar is in the enclosed carriageway out front. Book the dining room for a fireside dinner, or go to the carriageway for just a drink.
Intimate Cocktail Bars and Low-Lit Rooms
Small rooms, serious drinks, and seating you may need to plan for. A few of these don't take reservations at all, and a couple only take them for certain tables.

McClellan's Retreat
2031 Florida Ave NW, Washington, DC 20009, USA
A cocktail bar that still acts like a neighborhood bar: rotating list, deep whiskey shelf, snacks. Go early for easy conversation. Open from 4 p.m. Mon to Sat, closed Sundays for now.

OKPB
3165 Mt Pleasant St NW, Washington, DC 20010, USA
Small upstairs room where the drinks are the entertainment and the menu changes constantly. No reservations: put your name down in person and wait for a text. Parties max six, walk-up only, nuts are the only food. Half-price martinis and Manhattans weekdays 5 to 7.

Denson Liquor Bar
600 F St NW Lower Level, Washington, DC 20004, USA
Subterranean Art Deco bar with reservable booths (two hours each). Bar seats are walk-in. Look for the Denson lights at 6th and F and take the stairs down. Food menu too.

L'Annexe
2917 M St NW, Washington, DC 20007, USA
The library room off the zinc bar is the reason to come: house-infused spirits, a few small plates, properly tucked away. Message the bar directly to ask for a library table; a standard Resy booking won't guarantee one. Closed Mon.

The Fountain Inn DC
1659 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20007, USA
A small, serious cocktail bar and restaurant built around rare spirits. Reserve for dinner and drinks. Tastings and spirit flights are a separate booking, and there's a private floor for small groups.

The Wells
727 C St SE, Washington, DC 20003, USA
Deep green walls, copper, low light, and a menu built around gin. The martini bar on this list, behind a green door next to The Duck & The Peach. Wed to Sat only; reserve and go at 5 for the first-hour happy hour.

Bar Charley
1825 18th St NW, Washington, DC 20009, USA
For the night when one person wants a cocktail and another wants a steak. Snug room, real food menu. Book an early indoor table if you're there to talk; it fills at dinner.

St. Vincent Wine
3212 Georgia Ave NW, Washington, DC 20010, USA
The garden gets the attention, but the indoor lounge is the cozy part, especially Monday nights when the jazz moves inside. Wine, cocktails, and a real food menu. Check the music calendar first.
Cozy Hotel Bars and Lounges
DC's hotel bars are some of the most comfortable rooms in the city, and most of them open in the afternoon, which makes them the answer for a rainy day or an early drink.

Off the Record
800 16th St NW, Washington, DC 20006, USA
The most Washington bar in Washington: lower level of the Hay-Adams, red tufted banquettes, political caricatures. Opens 11:30 a.m. daily, and afternoons beat prime time. A splurge, with a proper alcohol-free list.

Quill at The Jefferson
1200 16th St NW, Washington, DC 20036, USA
The composed end of cozy: soft seating, classic cocktails, and a real bar menu at The Jefferson. Live piano Thu to Sat. Ask about the reservable Cabinet Rooms for something private.

Doyle
1500 New Hampshire Ave NW, Washington, DC 20036, USA
A brighter, midcentury-style lounge looking out on Dupont Circle. Opens 2 p.m. weekdays and 1 p.m. weekends, hours before most cocktail bars, so it's the rainy-afternoon pick.

Silver Lyan
900 F St NW, Washington, DC 20004, USA
A former bank vault under the Riggs hotel with one of the most inventive cocktail menus in DC. Reserve and go early; it gets loud later. Several cocktails come alcohol-free. Closed Mon.

Reynold’s Bar
1320 18th St NW, Washington, DC 20036, USA
Dim, velvet-draped drinking den with its own entrance on 18th St, plus Americana bar bites. Opens 4 p.m. daily. Go early; it turns into a social lounge as the night goes on.
Cozy Pubs and Neighborhood Bars
Beer, booths, and nobody rushing you. These are the places for a long conversation, a pint before a train, or a group that wants somewhere warm without a cocktail-bar wait.

The Sovereign
1206 Wisconsin Ave NW #1, Washington, DC 20007, USA
Fifty Belgian drafts, hundreds of bottles, and mussels and braises to go with them. Proof a cozy night doesn't need cocktails. Reserve if you're eating; opens at 5 p.m.

Saloon
1205 U St NW, Washington, DC 20009, USA
House rules: no TVs, no standing, no martinis. A room full of people sitting down with a beer and talking, on a street known for loud nights. Come with a small group and expect to wait for seats. Closes for a few weeks every August.

Raven Grill
3125 Mt Pleasant St NW APT 101, Washington, DC 20010, USA
The least polished kind of cozy, since 1935: worn booths, cheap drinks, a jukebox in the corner. Cash only, no card reader. Eat first; the only food is chips.

The Pub & The People
1648 North Capitol St NW, Washington, DC 20002, USA
The Pub & The People is the friendly corner pub upstairs. Side Door, the small bar beneath it, is the date pick. Side Door is open Thu to Sat from 6 p.m.; book it by name, since a pub table isn't the same thing.

Mr. Henry's Restaurant
601 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, Washington, DC 20003, USA
Victorian-style pub on the Hill since 1966, with pub food, long hours, and live music upstairs. The pub is walk-in and casual; upstairs shows are ticketed, so check the calendar.

The Crown & Crow
1317 14th St NW, Washington, DC 20005, USA
A basement pub done up like 1890s London: restored oak bar, antiques, chandeliers. Bigger than it looks, so it's the cozy pick for six people. Go early to talk; open until 2 a.m., later on weekends.

Martin's Tavern
1264 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20007, USA
A dark-wood Georgetown tavern open since 1933, with booths that have hosted half of political Washington. Resy for up to six; bigger groups email ahead. Open from 11 a.m., and from 8 a.m. on weekends.

The Dubliner Restaurant
4 F St NW, Washington, DC 20001, USA
Wood paneling, stained glass, and live Irish music nightly from 7:30 p.m., steps from Union Station. Reserve through the site or by phone. Opens early and closes late every day.

Allegory
1201 K St NW #1, Washington, DC 20005, USA
A hidden room behind an unmarked door in the Eaton hotel's library, with a leather couch and a wraparound mural. Walk-in only, no reservations, groups max eight, and waits can run long on weekends. Closed Sun.
How to pick the right cozy bar in DC
Quiet or lively? The Saloon, Quill, and Le Bar à Vin are for talking. St. Vincent, Mr. Henry's, The Dubliner, and late-night Reynold's come with music and a crowd.
Ask for the room, not just the bar. The lounge at Tabard, the dining room at Iron Gate, the library at L'Annexe, and Side Door under The Pub & The People are the seats this guide is recommending.
Book or wing it? For a fixed start time, reserve a Denson booth, a table at The Wells, or Bar Charley. Le Bar à Vin, OKPB, and Allegory don't take reservations at all, so go early or be flexible.
