The right taco order in San Diego depends on where you're standing. At one counter it's adobada on a handmade corn tortilla. At another it's a battered fish taco you should eat before the crunch fades. Sometimes the best move is to skip the familiar order and go for beef cheek, smoked tuna or lamb barbacoa.

These 22 picks cover neighborhood taquerias, seafood trucks, old-school kitchens and a few restaurants that turn tacos into a proper dinner out. Each card tells you what to order first. The list leans south on purpose: Chula Vista and Bonita hold some of the best taco cooking in the county and are worth the drive from downtown. You'll also find picks in the Gaslamp, Barrio Logan, North Park, City Heights, Pacific Beach, La Jolla and Escondido.

The guide is organized by area, so start with where you'll be. If you'd rather choose a taco first, the table sorts every pick by style. Explore the map to find tacos near you.

Best Tacos in Downtown San Diego and Barrio Logan

Downtown's taco counters sit within a couple of blocks of each other in the Gaslamp, so a crawl works on foot. Pick two of Los Chuchys, Tacos El Franc and the F Street branch of Tacos El Gordo, and make one stop about charcoal-grilled beef and the other about adobada or pastor.

In Barrio Logan, Las Cuatro Milpas runs 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Fish Guts opens at noon a few blocks away. Have fried or rolled tacos late in the morning, then get in line for fish. If Fish Guts is closed for its remodel, Mi Gusto Es in City Heights is a short drive.

Tacos El Franc

Tacos El Franc

528 Fifth Ave, San Diego, CA 92101, USA

The asada is the point here: charcoal-grilled top sirloin on a handmade corn tortilla with beans, onion and cilantro, plus salsa and avocado alongside. It's the strongest case downtown for ordering beef over pork. Start with one asada and one adobada, then go back for whichever you liked more. The order: carne asada and adobada, then a mixto if you're still hungry.

Taquería Los Chuchys

Taquería Los Chuchys

543 Fourth Ave, San Diego, CA 92101, USA

Charcoal-cooked meats, pastor from the trompo and handmade tortillas are the foundation here. Order carne asada first, then pastor, and keep it to those two so you can compare them. It sits within a couple of blocks of Tacos El Franc and the F Street El Gordo, and Friday and Saturday service runs until 2:30 a.m. The order: carne asada and al pastor.

Lola 55

Lola 55

1290 F St, San Diego, CA 92101, USA

Lola 55 is where tacos anchor dinner instead of filling a gap before the next plan. The pork belly al pastor brings achiote-seasoned pork, mesquite pineapple and cilantro crema; the cauliflower taco layers eggplant bacon, almonds and golden raisins. Order a couple of different fillings. One detail is easy to miss: the Baja-style fish taco comes with a chorizo-tomato vinaigrette. The order: pork belly al pastor, then cauliflower or smoked carnitas.

Fish Guts

Fish Guts

2222 Logan Ave, San Diego, CA 92113, USA

Heads-up: Fish Guts plans to close temporarily for a remodel once its sister restaurant, Concrete Cowboy, opens across the street, so check before you go. The Estilo Baja is the classic: beer-battered local white fish with slaw, pico de gallo and chipotle aioli on tortillas made in-house. Then come opah done al pastor, blackened swordfish and coconut-battered shrimp. Tacos come two of the same per order, so share. It opens at noon and closes when the fish sells out. The order: Estilo Baja, plus al pastor opah or De Espada swordfish to share.

Las Cuatro Milpas

Las Cuatro Milpas

1985 National Ave Ste 1131, San Diego, CA 92113, USA

Come for the fried and rolled tacos, and leave room for rice, beans and chorizo; the flour tortillas are worth taking home. The Barrio Logan institution reopened in May 2026 inside the Mercado del Barrio complex on National Avenue, a few blocks from its longtime Logan Avenue home, so update any old saved pin. Open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The order: fried or rolled tacos with rice, beans and chorizo.

Best Tacos in the South Bay: Chula Vista, Bonita and Nestor

This is where the list runs deepest. Tacos El Gordo, Las Ahumaderas, Aquí Es Texcoco and De Cabeza El Único all sit on Broadway in Chula Vista. Choose two and change specialties between them: adobada plus lamb barbacoa, or cabeza plus adobada.

On Bonita Road, pair carne asada at Taco Machin with smoked tuna at the original TJ Oyster Bar. Ed Fernandez, farther south in Nestor, serves breakfast and lunch only.

Tacos El Gordo

Tacos El Gordo

556 Broadway, Chula Vista, CA 91910, USA

Adobada is the order that built the line here: spiced pork shaved onto a handmade corn tortilla with fresh toppings. Add a second taco with a different filling, like cabeza or suadero, before spending the rest of your appetite on fries. Go to Broadway for a Chula Vista outing and the F Street branch for a downtown meal. Both stay open until 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 4 a.m. Friday and Saturday. The order: two adobada tacos, then cabeza or suadero for contrast.

Las Ahumaderas

Las Ahumaderas

1011 Broadway, Chula Vista, CA 91911, USA

Range is the draw. Alongside asada and adobada you'll find cabeza, lengua, suadero, tripa and birria, so a group can pass plates and cover a lot of the menu. The campechano combines two proteins; our move is asada with crispy tripa, plus a separate adobada taco. The order: adobada and a campechano with asada and tripa.

Aquí Es Texcoco

Aquí Es Texcoco

520 Broadway 5 & 6, Chula Vista, CA 91910, USA

The smart order here starts with a plate of lamb, not a list of tacos. Get barbacoa, tortillas and lamb broth, then build your tacos at the table. It's a slower rhythm than a taqueria counter, which makes it a good pick when you want to sit down with someone. Keep the focus on the lamb the first time. The order: lamb barbacoa with tortillas and lamb broth.

De Cabeza El Único

De Cabeza El Único

1043 Broadway #108, Chula Vista, CA 91911, USA

Here cabeza stops being the unfamiliar option at the bottom of the menu. Start with cachete, or beef cheek, and a cup of consommé con carne, then add lengua, the surtido mixed order or green chorizo depending on how far you want to go. If you've already eaten plenty of tacos in San Diego, this is the stop that will feel different. The order: cachete, surtido or lengua, and consommé con carne.

Taquería Revolución

Taquería Revolución

3001 Bonita Rd, Chula Vista, CA 91910, USA

When everyone at the table wants a slightly different taco meal, Revolución handles it well. Order carne asada or adobada as a plain taco, then the same meat as a quesataco; one filling in two formats shows the difference better than a new filling each time. Birria with a side of its broth takes the meal another direction. The order: an asada taco and an adobada quesataco.

Taco Machin

Taco Machin

4228 Bonita Rd, Bonita, CA 91902, USA

Begin with the carne asada taco: grilled steak, guacamole, onion, cilantro and salsa. When you want cheese and something more substantial, the asada mulita is the next move. There's plenty beyond steak, including crispy tripa, braised lengua, beef cheek and a nopal taco. The original TJ Oyster Bar is just down Bonita Road. The order: carne asada taco and an asada mulita.

TJ Oyster Bar

TJ Oyster Bar

4246 Bonita Rd Ste B, Bonita, CA 91902, USA

The original Bonita location is a small counter-style room where the cooking happens right in front of you. Order a fish taco as your reference point and a smoked tuna taco as the reason you came; the smoked tuna comes with cheese and eats heavier, so pace the rest of the order. Taco Machin is just down Bonita Road. The order: fish taco and smoked tuna taco.

Ed Fernandez Restaurant Birrieria

Ed Fernandez Restaurant Birrieria

2265 Flower Ave D, San Diego, CA 92154, USA

A birria specialist near the border in Nestor, open Wednesday through Sunday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. The slow-cooked beef comes in tacos or as a bowl of chile-and-spice broth with tortillas, and broth belongs in the order either way. Start with a plain birria taco; the Quesotaco con Nervio adds tendon for a richer bite and the Quesotaco Extremo is the other house signature. The order: a birria taco, a quesataco and broth.

Best Tacos in Central San Diego: North Park, City Heights and Mission Valley

Neighborhood taquerias, seafood trucks and the city's strongest vegetarian and vegan options. Oscar's also has a Hillcrest branch here; its card is in the coast section below.

Tacos El Panson

Tacos El Panson

4433 El Cajon Blvd, San Diego, CA 92115, USA

Skip the usual asada-and-pastor pairing. Tripa, suadero, cabeza and other traditional cuts are why this City Heights taqueria belongs in your rotation, and the handmade tortillas give them a proper base. Put tripa at the center of the meal and ask for it crisp if that's how you like it. The order: tripa and suadero, or carnitas mixed with tripa.

Mariscos Mi Gusto Es

Mariscos Mi Gusto Es

4425 Home Ave, San Diego, CA 92105, USA

Mi Gusto Es works when one person wants battered fish and another wants smoked seafood or a gobernador taco. Start with pescado, then add smoked marlin or gobernador. An aguachile tostada is good for sharing, but don't let it replace the tacos. This is a seafood truck on Home Avenue, so come for the mariscos menu, not the setting. The order: battered fish plus smoked marlin or gobernador.

Carnitas Las Michoacanas

Carnitas Las Michoacanas

6513 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92115, USA

Make pork the whole plan. Start with carnitas tacos, and for a group, order carnitas by the pound and build tacos around the meat at the table. Ask which cuts are available when you order. This pick is the University Avenue restaurant in Rolando, not a similarly named business elsewhere in the county. The order: carnitas tacos, or carnitas by the pound for sharing.

City Tacos

City Tacos

3028 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92104, USA

City Tacos gives vegetarians real choices, not one token option. The portobello combines mushrooms with beans, corn, greens and cheese, and the chile relleno centers a battered chile güero filled with Oaxaca and cotija. Meat eaters can go for the Mexicali. The portobello and zucchini tacos can be made vegan on request, but both come with cheese as standard, so ask. The order: portobello and chile relleno; Mexicali for a steak option.

Tacotarian

Tacotarian

4332 30th St, San Diego, CA 92104, USA

The whole menu is plant-based, so vegan diners can order anything without a string of questions about toppings. Start with the seitan al pastor, made with achiote and pineapple, then add the jackfruit birria with consommé. Choose it when the whole meal needs to work for vegan diners; everyone else can order from the same menu. The order: seitan al pastor and jackfruit birria.

Kiko's Place Seafood

Kiko's Place Seafood

Corner of hazard center dr. And, Mission Center Rd, San Diego, CA 92108, USA

A seafood-truck lunch, not a restaurant occasion. Start with the battered fish taco, where the light batter and hot fish do all the work. Order modestly, eat while everything's hot, then decide on a second round. Several Kiko's-related listings exist around San Diego, so navigate to the Mission Valley truck at Hazard Center Drive and Mission Center Road. The order: Baja-style battered fish tacos.

Best Tacos on the Coast and in North County

Smoked fish in Pacific Beach, an easy stop during a La Jolla day, and Escondido's adobada for anyone exploring North County.

Oscar's Mexican Seafood

Oscar's Mexican Seafood

746 Emerald St, San Diego, CA 92109, USA

The smoked fish taco, with cabbage, avocado and cheese, sets Oscar's apart from every other battered-fish stop. For something more loaded, the Taco Especial piles on smoked fish, shrimp and scallops. Pair either with a simple battered fish taco. Emerald Street is the branch for a Pacific Beach day; University Avenue in Hillcrest is handier if you're staying central. The order: smoked fish and battered fish, or the Taco Especial as the main event.

The Taco Stand

The Taco Stand

621 Pearl St, La Jolla, CA 92037, USA

The Taco Stand fits into a La Jolla day without rearranging it. The al pastor pairs rotisserie-marinated pork with pineapple, onion and cilantro salsa, while the Sonora goes richer with steak, melted cheese, pinto beans and guacamole on a flour tortilla. There's also a Baja fish taco and a mushroom taco labeled vegan. The order: al pastor and Sonora.

TJ Tacos

TJ Tacos

802 E Valley Pkwy, Escondido, CA 92025, USA

Handmade tortillas, generous guacamole and Tijuana-style fillings give Escondido a taco destination of its own. Start with adobada, then add asada; there's no need to complicate it. This is a North County stop, not something to tack onto a downtown dinner. The order: adobada first, carne asada second.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best tacos in San Diego?
It depends on the style. For Tijuana-style adobada, start at Tacos El Gordo. For fish tacos, go to Fish Guts or the smoked fish at Oscar's. For birria, it's Ed Fernandez; for lamb barbacoa, Aquí Es Texcoco.
What's the difference between Tijuana-style and Baja-style tacos?
Tijuana-style usually means meat tacos from the taqueria tradition across the border: adobada shaved off a trompo, charcoal-grilled asada and handmade corn tortillas. Baja-style usually means a battered, fried fish taco with cabbage or slaw and a creamy sauce.
Which San Diego taco spots are open late?
Both Tacos El Gordo locations, on F Street downtown and Broadway in Chula Vista, serve until 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 4 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Los Chuchys runs until 2:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Ed Fernandez and Las Cuatro Milpas are daytime-only.
Where should vegan and vegetarian diners go for tacos in San Diego?
Tacotarian's menu is entirely vegan. For a mixed group, City Tacos has several vegetarian tacos and vegan versions on request, and The Taco Stand has a vegan mushroom taco. Ask about cheese and sauces either way.
How much should I budget for tacos in San Diego?
Plan on $15–25 per person before tax and tip for two or three street tacos and a nonalcoholic drink. Specialty seafood tacos, composed restaurant tacos and cocktails push the total higher.
