Minnesota is the rare Big Ten school that sits inside a
real city, and the geography is worth learning before you arrive. Campus
straddles the Mississippi: the East Bank holds the stadium, Coffman Union, and
most of the classroom buildings, with Dinkytown just north and Stadium Village
just east, while the West Bank sits across the river toward downtown. The Green
Line light rail runs straight through all of it, with three campus stations,
which means downtown Minneapolis, the North Loop, and St. Paul are genuinely
reachable without a car. Between August move-in, football and hockey weekends,
parents weekend, and May graduation, visitor demand spikes several times a
year, so everything below is organized to help you find what you need fast.
Best Restaurants Near Campus
Eating around the U works in layers. Dinkytown and Stadium
Village hold the cheap, fast, walk-between-classes staples, Prospect Park and
Southeast Como carry the sit-down dinners and the beer, and the North Loop and
Northeast lock in the celebration meals a short light rail ride away. Stadium
Village, the commercial strip on the east edge of campus, is also pinned on the
map as an orientation point rather than a single restaurant.

Fourteen counter stools in a Dinkytown alley about ten feet wide, cooking breakfast since 1950 and a James Beard America’s Classics winner in 2004. There are no tables and there is usually a line behind you waiting for your seat, which is the whole experience. Open daily, mornings only.
Afro Deli & Grill: Minneapolis
720 Washington Ave SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414, USA
Somali and East African cooking crossed with Mediterranean and American plates, right in Stadium Village on the East Bank. Founder Abdirahman Kahin was named the SBA’s U.S. Small Business Person of the Year in 2023, and this location is the easiest introduction to a cuisine the Twin Cities does better than almost anywhere in the country.
Shuang Cheng

Cantonese seafood in Dinkytown since 1990, with live tanks and a kitchen that has outlasted most of the block. Andrew Zimmern has said the steamed walleye with ginger and scallion would be his last meal in Minneapolis, which is about as strong an endorsement as a Minnesota fish gets.
Kbop Korean Bistro

Quick, bowl-format Korean in Dinkytown with weekday lunch specials and a free public ramp directly across the street, which is not nothing in this neighborhood. Closed Sundays and Mondays, so check the day before you walk over.
Wally's Falafel and Hummus

Counter-service Middle Eastern a few doors from Al’s, doing falafel, chicken shawarma, and house pita at prices built for a student budget. Open daily and fast enough to work between classes.
Surly Brewing Co.
520 Malcolm Ave SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414, USA
The destination brewery in Prospect Park, with a cavernous beer hall, a pizza room upstairs doing New Haven-style apizza, Saturday tours, and a festival field that hosts outdoor concerts. Worth correcting a persistent myth: the beer hall announced a permanent closure back in 2020 and is very much open today. Pizza Upstairs is closed Mondays.
Blue Door Pub University
1514 Como Ave SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414, USA
Home of the Blucy, the Blue Door’s stuffed-burger answer to the Jucy Lucy, in a neighborhood room a few minutes northeast of campus. The chain started in St. Paul in 2008 and this is the location students actually get to. Closed Mondays.
Brasa Premium Rotisserie- Northeast Minneapolis

Caribbean and Creole-leaning rotisserie in a converted service station, opened in 2007 by Alex and Margo Roberts of Alma. Slow-roasted meats with yuca, plantains, and cornbread, and a counter format that keeps it casual enough for a weeknight with family.

Alex Roberts won a James Beard Best Chef: Midwest award here in 2010, and the building now holds three things at once: the tasting-menu restaurant, a more casual all-day cafe, and a seven-room boutique hotel upstairs. The single best walkable option for a graduation dinner or a parents weekend splurge.
Owamni

Sean Sherman’s Indigenous restaurant, which won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in 2022 as Owamni and reopened in June 2026 at the Guthrie Theater under the name Indígena. The new room roughly doubles the old one and adds an oyster bar and a chef’s table, with bison, elk, and venison on an expanded menu. The most distinctive meal in Minneapolis and the one to book furthest ahead.
The Market At Malcolm Yards

A food hall in a restored Prospect Park industrial building, with nine chef-run stalls, a full bar, and a self-pour tap wall under the old grain silos. It works as a proving ground for local operators, so the roster changes, which also makes it the easiest place to feed a group that can’t agree on anything.

Two concepts sharing one Dinkytown storefront: Sicilian slices on one side, cheesesteaks on Amoroso rolls shipped in from Philadelphia on the other. The kitchen runs to 2am most nights, which makes it the default end to a Dinkytown evening.
Spoon and Stable

Gavin Kaysen’s North Loop flagship, open since 2014 in a 1906 horse stable that gave the place its name. Kaysen took Best Chef: Midwest in 2018, and this remains the reservation Minneapolis families chase for graduation weekend. Roughly two miles from campus, so plan on the light rail or a ride.

Gopher nightlife stays close to home. Dinkytown and
Stadium Village carry the student bars you can walk to from a dorm, Southeast
Como holds the neighborhood dives that have been there for generations, and the

Pouring on the east edge of campus since 1939, a block from the stadium and about as close to a true campus institution as Minneapolis has. Regulars will tell you it’s the oldest bar by the U, and while Manning’s makes a competing claim, nobody disputes how many generations of Gophers have started a Saturday here.
Blarney Pub & Grill

The Dinkytown standby, upstairs and loud, and the room most students name first when you ask where they go out. One catch worth planning around: it’s closed Sunday through Tuesday, so this is a Wednesday-to-Saturday bar only.
Sally's Saloon

The Stadium Village patio bar, rebuilt into a newer apartment building after the original closed in 2013 and reopened a couple of years later. Game days and the first warm week of spring are when it earns its reputation.
Town Hall Brewery

Brewing at Seven Corners on the West Bank since 1997, which makes it one of the older brewpubs in the state and a decorated one at the Great American Beer Festival. Closed Sundays, and a good pick when you want a pint and a real dinner in the same stop.

A Southeast Como neighborhood bar with karaoke midweek, Thursday trivia, and weekend brunch, in the space that used to be Sporty’s. Where grad students and people who live in the neighborhood go when Dinkytown feels too young.
Manning’s Restaurant & Bar

Family-run on Como since 1932 by the family’s own account, serving breakfast from the morning and drinks until 2am on weekends. Unpretentious, dark, and the neighborhood counterweight to the student bars a few blocks south.
Best Hotels Near Campus
The campus corridor along University Avenue SE has a
genuine cluster of hotels, all on or near the Green Line, and that’s where most
families should look first. Downtown and the North Loop hold the nicer rooms,
and the light rail makes them workable, but they’re a ride from campus rather
than a walk. Rooms tighten hard around move-in, home football Saturdays, and
graduation, so book early and book refundable.

Collegiate-themed rooms, the Beacon Public House downstairs, and a Topgolf Swing Suite. This is the default booking for campus tours, move-in, and game weekends, and the first to sell out.

A straightforward 117-room hotel on the University Avenue corridor with free hot breakfast, an indoor pool, and a light rail station about a block away. The practical family pick when the Graduate is full or overpriced.

Converted from the old Holiday Inn Metrodome in 2013, this 265-room hotel sits on the downtown side of I-35W with an indoor pool and a lot of event space. It markets itself as being at the U, which oversells it slightly, but the West Bank is a walk and the East Bank is a short ride.
Canopy by Hilton Minneapolis Mill District

Opened in 2019 in the Mill District, two blocks from the Guthrie, with 183 rooms, a rooftop spa area, and the UMBRA restaurant downstairs. The pick when you want the riverfront and downtown rather than a campus parking lot, with the U about two miles up the line.
Hewing Hotel

A 124-room boutique hotel in an 1897 brick-and-timber warehouse in the North Loop, opened in 2016 and best known for the rooftop cedar sauna and the pool that becomes a hot tub in winter. Tullibee handles the Nordic-leaning dining. Not walkable to campus, but the most memorable room on this list.
Hotel Ivy, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Minneapolis

Built around the Ivy Tower, a 1930 ziggurat originally designed as a church and one of the more unusual buildings in Minneapolis. The 136-room hotel was completed in 2008, has a spa and a skyway connection, and sits about two miles from campus.

Next door to the Hampton and the better call for longer stays, since every room is a suite with a kitchen. Half a mile to campus and the stadium, free hot breakfast, indoor pool, and a rooftop patio with a firepit. Good for families splitting a week around move-in.
Four Seasons Hotel Minneapolis

The city’s top-end stay, opened in 2022 on the upper floors of the RBC Gateway tower with 222 rooms, a spa, and the largest outdoor pool plaza downtown. Mara and Socca Café both come from Gavin Kaysen, so you can eat very well without leaving the building. Book this for a milestone graduation weekend, not a routine campus visit.

Huntington Bank Stadium

Gopher football’s home since 2009, when the program returned to campus after 27 seasons in the Metrodome. The horseshoe seats 50,805 and was designed to expand toward 80,000 if the demand ever arrives. It carried the TCF Bank Stadium name until 2021, and it filled in as the temporary home of both the Vikings and Minnesota United. The Stadium Village Green Line station sits right across 23rd Avenue.

Walter Library

The 1924 Roman Renaissance landmark on Northrop Mall, red brick and Bedford limestone, restored in a $63 million project finished in 2002 and now home to the Science and Engineering Library. One important note for visitors: the University requires a U Card for library access, so admire the exterior and the Mall unless you’re with a student who can walk you in.
Weisman Art Museum
333 E River Rd, Minneapolis, MN 55455, USA
Frank Gehry’s crumpled stainless steel building on the bluff above the Mississippi, opened in 1993 and free to enter every day. Two things to check before you go: it’s closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and a window replacement project has several galleries temporarily shut through summer 2026, so confirm what’s open on the museum’s site.
