I'll be upfront: I am very picky about matcha. I grew up in China and spent a lot of my life in Asia, so good matcha was just part of life. Moving to Minnesota, finding a cup that actually tastes like matcha (and not green sugar milk) became a bit of a mission.

Good news: the Twin Cities matcha scene has seriously leveled up. There's a tea house milling its own matcha, a pop-up whisking every single drink by hand, and plenty of cafes doing fun flavors that are worth the hype. Here's where to go.

How I judge a matcha

Quick cheat sheet so you know what to look for:
  • Color. Good matcha is bright, vibrant green. If it looks dull or brownish, that's a sign.
  • Taste. It should be smooth and a little earthy, not bitter or chalky.
  • Texture. No clumps. A well-made matcha is whisked until it's silky.
  • Sweetness. A great matcha doesn't need a ton of syrup to taste good. Try it unsweetened or lightly sweetened at least once.

Northeast Tea House

If you take matcha seriously, start here. Northeast Tea House mills its own matcha from tencha leaves, on one of only a handful of matcha mills in the country. That's about as fresh as it gets. It's served in beautiful pottery, and the whole place is built for slowing down.

Heads up: it's a laptop free zone, so this isn't your study spot. Come to sit, sip, and actually enjoy it.

SK Coffee

Want that Northeast Tea House quality in a latte? SK Coffee in Whittier uses their matcha. Get the iced honey matcha. The Whittier spot is tiny and fills up fast, so it's more of a grab and go. They also have a St. Paul coffee bar and roastery, where reviewers say the baristas really know their matcha.

Okome House

Matcha soft serve! Okome House in Longfellow is a Japanese spot just a few blocks from Minnehaha Falls, and its matcha soft serve isn't overly sweet, which I love. Get the matcha and vanilla twist if you want it a little sweeter. Pair it with a walk to the falls.

A few matcha tips

  • Ask for it less sweet. Most cafes will happily cut the syrup, and you'll actually taste the matcha.
  • Try different milk types; different people like different kinds. I know oat milk supposedly tastes really good with matcha, but I'm a die-hard fresh milk fan.
  • If you see a matcha that's clumpy or dull, don't give up on matcha. Try one of the spots above instead!

Save the collection so you're never stuck with a sad matcha again. And if you have a matcha spot I need to try, send it my way. You know I'll be picky about it.

Till next time :)

Hi! I’m Alex. I’ve lived all around the world, so I’ve had a lot of practice finding my favorite spots in a new city. I’m not a 6am alarm kind of traveler. I’d rather grab a good coffee and wander until I find something worth sharing. I’m currently based in St. Paul, and these are the spots I’d send my besties to.
