One thing decides almost every plan you make here, so learn it first: the Lehigh River. Lehigh's Asa Packer campus sits on the hillside above South Bethlehem, and the South Side is where students actually live their week, along Third Street, Fourth Street and Broadway. Downtown Bethlehem, with its Moravian historic district and the Main Street restaurant strip, is on the north bank, about a mile away over the Fahy or Hill to Hill bridge. Both sides are worth your time and they feel like different towns. Everything below is labelled by which side of the water it sits on.

Lehigh eating splits along the river. The South Side, on Lehigh's side, is the everyday one: Third Street and Fourth Street hold the delis, the distillery and the rooftop, all within a walk of campus. Downtown Bethlehem, over the bridge, is where the nicer tables are, clustered on Main Street and West Broad within a couple of blocks of each other. Then there's Bolete, which is neither, and worth the drive anyway.

Lehigh's drinking is a South Side affair, and it's smaller and more brewery-led than the size of the student body suggests. Molly's is the student bar; the two breweries within walking distance of campus are the grown-up alternatives, and both are genuinely good. Over the river, downtown has one taproom worth crossing for, mostly because of the building it's in. One scheduling warning that will save you a wasted walk: Bonn Place keeps a very short week.

Three of these are on the South Side within a walk of campus and two are downtown, and the split matters more than usual because the two downtown ones are genuinely different in character. The trap to internalise: almost every cafe here shuts in the early afternoon. If a late breakfast is the plan, go early.

Bethlehem's hotel market is small and it is not only Lehigh that fills it. The city's festival calendar, Musikfest in particular, moves rooms in a way the academic calendar never does, so read the FAQ below before you book anything in early August or in the run-up to Christmas. Geography is the first decision: south of the river puts you near campus, SteelStacks and Wind Creek, while north puts you on Main Street in the historic district with the restaurants at the door and a bridge between you and the campus.

Two things shape a visit to Lehigh. The Asa Packer campus is built into a hillside, so a walking tour means real hills and steps, and comfortable shoes are not optional. And the athletics venues are not on it: Goodman Stadium and Stabler Arena sit on the Goodman Campus over in Saucon Valley, a drive rather than a walk. A sensible route on foot is Alumni Memorial Building, Linderman Library, Packer Memorial Church, then down to Zoellner. One more practical note, and Lehigh says it plainly on its own visitor pages: campus parking is enforced, so use the visitor spaces in the Alumni Memorial garage.
