Franklin & Marshall College Guide: Where to Eat, Drink & Stay in Lancaster (2026)

Whether you're an F&M student figuring out which downtown places are worth the walk, an incoming Diplomat learning Lancaster, a parent driving in for move-in, an alum back for True Blue Weekend, or a prospective student walking College Hill for the first time, this guide pulls together the restaurants, bars, hotels, and campus landmarks worth knowing around Franklin & Marshall College.

The geography here is easy to hold in your head. F&M sits on 220 acres on College Hill, the highest ground in Lancaster, bounded roughly by Harrisburg Avenue, College Avenue and Buchanan Park. Downtown and Penn Square are about a mile east, which F&M itself calls a 15- to 20-minute walk, and Lancaster's Walk Score of 81 is not marketing: most of what you need genuinely works on foot. Harrisburg Avenue runs west past campus and turns into Harrisburg Pike, where the suburban hotels sit. Move-in for first-years lands on August 20, 2026, True Blue Weekend takes over campus October 23 to 25, and Commencement for the Class of 2027 is Saturday, May 15. Lancaster punches well above its size on food, and F&M sits at a useful angle to it. West James and West Lemon Streets, a five to ten minute walk off campus, hold the closest real meals. Penn Square and the blocks around it, a mile east, hold the market, the brunch spots and the nicer dinners. One thing to know before you plan anything: a lot of the best places here close two or three days a week, and Central Market only opens Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Check before you drive over.

F&M is a small school in a city with a genuinely good bar scene, which means the drinking splits by distance. Hildy's, in Chestnut Hill just off College Avenue, is the closest thing to a campus bar and the only one you'd walk to without thinking about it. Everything else is downtown, clustered north and west of Penn Square, and reachable on the same one-mile walk that gets you to the market. The list runs from campus outward.

F&M publishes a list of preferred hotel partners with an F&M rate, and two of the hotels below are on it: Lancaster Arts Hotel, which the college puts at half a mile from campus and is the closest hotel to F&M by a clear margin, and Cork Factory Hotel at a mile and a half. Downtown gives you a walkable weekend around Penn Square; Harrisburg Pike and Fruitville Pike give you suites, kitchens and free parking a short drive out. Book early for True Blue Weekend in late October, which collides with the closing weeks of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, and for Commencement in May.

F&M's core walks in well under an hour. Campus visits run through the Lombardo Welcome Center at 933 Harrisburg Avenue, which is where student-guided tours start and where visitors park; tours run Monday through Friday plus select Saturdays, information sessions Monday through Friday, and on-campus interviews Fridays only. Book through the admission portal. One quirk worth knowing: F&M has no chapel and no separate visitor center, and Commencement happens indoors at the Alumni Sports & Fitness Center rather than on a lawn.
