The thing to understand about Sewanee is the scale. The university sits on a 13,000-acre Domain atop the Cumberland Plateau with around 1,700 undergraduates, and the village at its gates is small enough to walk end to end in a few minutes. That village has gotten considerably more interesting in the last few years, with LUNCH opening in 2023 and Judith in late 2024, but it's still a handful of doors. Monteagle, six miles east, is where the rest of the hotels and a good share of the restaurants are. Sewanee is 93 miles southeast of Nashville and 52 miles northwest of Chattanooga, so most visits start with a drive.

Sewanee's dining situation changed fast. Two of the best restaurants on the plateau opened within two years of each other in a village that had neither, so a campus that used to mean a drive to Monteagle for anything beyond a sandwich now has a Michelin-listed counter and a chef-driven dinner room inside walking distance. Monteagle still carries the volume: the special-occasion steakhouse, the pizza place that seats a group, and the reliable middle. Note the hours before you plan around any of it, because several of these keep short weeks.

Sewanee's daytime eating is where the village earns its keep. The Blue Chair is the one everybody names, doing double duty as the bakery in the morning and the tavern at night, and Cup and Gown covers the late hours inside the library. The two worth driving for are both off the Mountain: a deli in Monteagle and a bakery in Tracy City that has been open since 1902.

With 1,700 undergraduates and no commercial strip to speak of, Sewanee's nightlife is two rooms. Shenanigans is the town pub and has been for decades, drawing students, faculty, hikers, and anyone passing through. Tiger Bay Pub is the on-campus option and runs latest. That's the list, and locals will tell you it's enough.

There is exactly one hotel on campus, and everything else is in Monteagle six miles east. The Sewanee Inn is the obvious answer and the first thing to sell out, so the practical question for most families is which Monteagle option to take: the Victorian B&B on the Assembly grounds, the calm inn on Main Street, the family lodge with cabins and a pool, the chain, or a treehouse. Move-in, Family Weekend in early October, Homecoming in November, and Commencement in May are the weekends that fill the whole plateau.

Most campus tours are a walk between buildings. Sewanee's is a walk to the edge of a plateau. The Domain runs to 13,000 acres and the best stops on it are the ones where the ground stops: the Memorial Cross, Green's View, Morgan's Steep. Pair those with All Saints' Chapel at the center of campus and Abbo's Alley running below it, and a first visit is essentially one loop with a car for the far ends.
