Central Park Boathouse Wedding Guide (2027): Cost, Capacity & Insider Tips
How a wedding works at the Boathouse on the Lake in Central Park: what the Lake Room costs after fees, why 200 seats is the ceiling, how guests get in from Fifth Avenue and where to put them up.

The Boathouse sits on the eastern shore of the Lake, a six-minute walk into Central Park from Fifth Avenue and East 72nd Street. Guests leave their taxis at the park wall, walk or ride the event shuttle along the park drive, and arrive at a low brick building with a copper roof and the rowboat dock beside it. Dinner is in the Lake Room, where the windows open straight onto the water.
This is a catered restaurant venue, not a blank space. The kitchen, bar, staff, tables, chairs, linen and china come with it. Bedrooms do not, and neither does a driveway.
For 2027, pricing is a $10,000 venue fee plus $400 or $450 per person for five hours of food and open bar, before a 12% administrative charge, a 12% service charge and 8.875% sales tax. For 150 guests with the ceremony on site, plan on roughly $140,000–$200,000 once a planner, photography, flowers and music are added.

The RoamRecs Take
New Yorkers have been rowing from this corner of the Lake since the 1860s. Calvert Vaux, who designed the park with Frederick Law Olmsted, built the first boathouse here in the 1870s. The building you see now opened in 1954, in red brick and limestone under a copper roof, paid for by the investment banker Carl M. Loeb and his wife Adeline. That is why half your older guests will still call it the Loeb Boathouse. It became a proper restaurant in 1983 and then a film set, most famously in When Harry Met Sally.
The city owns it. Legends Hospitality, the company behind the food at Yankee Stadium and One World Observatory, took over in 2023 on a ten-year license after the previous operator closed, and reopened the restaurant in March 2024. What you are booking is a professionally run catering operation in a building your parents will recognize.
The reason to choose it is simple: you get Central Park without betting the day on the weather. The ceremony and dinner both happen indoors, with the Lake outside the glass and rowboats going past. You are also not building a wedding from nothing. The kitchen, the service team and the furniture are already there, which takes real work off your plate compared with a loft or a raw event space.
We would bring 120 to 180 guests. The room seats 200, but at 200 the dance floor and the band are competing with the tables for the same floor. At 150 you can have a full band, two bars and room to move.
The tradeoff is money and the last quarter mile. The per-person price drives the bill, and the charges and tax add a third on top. Negotiating the room fee saves you a little; trimming the guest list or choosing the lower bar tier saves you a lot. And nobody is dropped at the door. Guests arrive on foot or by shuttle, so the arrival has to be planned as carefully as the dinner.
For a wedding of 50 or fewer, ask about the Fireside Room instead. The Lake Room's pricing does not shrink neatly with the guest list.
Best for: Couples who want a seated dinner for 120 to 180 on the water in Central Park, with the kitchen and staff handled for them.
Think twice if: You need more than 200 seats, want everyone under one hotel roof, have a caterer you love, or cannot imagine the night ending at midnight.

How Much Does a Central Park Boathouse Wedding Cost?
2027 pricing
- Venue fee: $10,000
- Premium package: $400 per person for five hours
- Ultra Premium package: $450 per person for five hours
- On-site ceremony: $3,000, with an additional hour of service and welcome bubbles
These are the Boathouse's wedding prices for 2027.
Both packages cover a cocktail hour with six passed selections and a reception station, a plated starter, a choice of two entrées, dessert, and coffee, tea and wine poured at the table. Both include an open bar and a specialty cocktail. The $50 difference is the bar. Ask for the two brand lists side by side and decide whether your guests would notice.
You also get a tasting for four, printed menus and an anniversary dinner for two, worth $250.
What the charges do to the bill
Every $1,000 of venue and catering spend becomes $1,339.40 on the invoice. The 12% service charge is the gratuity and goes to the catering staff. The 12% administrative charge is not a tip and stays with the house. Sales tax is charged on the base plus the administrative charge.
Do not add another percentage tip for the service team on top. Hand an envelope to anyone who went out of their way, and leave it there.
A real quote: 200 guests on a winter Saturday
For a winter Saturday in 2027, the Boathouse quoted $130,591.50 for 200 guests on the Ultra Premium package, from 6 p.m. to midnight, with no ceremony. That figure included a one-time $2,500 discount on the venue fee, which has since expired. Half was due as the deposit.
The Boathouse does run winter offers. If you are flexible on date, ask what is available before you ask for anything else.
The minimum spend
That winter Saturday carried a $40,000 food-and-beverage minimum, which 100 guests on the Premium package reach exactly. Expect a higher number on a Saturday in May or September.
Extras worth knowing
- Additional hour: $2,500 for the room, plus the bar and food to go with it
- Additional bartender: $175
- Chef-attended station: $250 in labor
- Vendor meals: $75 each
All of these are before the charges and tax.
The package buys five hours of food and bar, and the ceremony adds a sixth. Build the evening to fit: a 6 p.m. ceremony, cocktails at 6:30, dinner at 7:30 and a last dance at midnight.
Estimated Total Wedding Budget
RoamRecs planning estimate for one wedding day with an on-site ceremony. The low end uses the Premium package and the high end Ultra Premium.
- 100 guests: About $105,000–$155,000
- 150 guests: About $140,000–$200,000
- 200 guests: About $170,000–$245,000
Here is how the 150-guest figure breaks down:
- Venue, catering and ceremony, with charges and tax: Roughly $98,000–$108,000
- Planner or coordinator: $6,000–$12,000
- Photography and video: $8,000–$16,000
- Flowers, design and any furniture upgrades: $11,000–$25,000
- Band or DJ, lighting and sound: $6,500–$17,000
- Everything else (guest transport to the park, officiant, stationery, hair and makeup, vendor meals, insurance): About $6,000–$13,000
A 10% cushion on everything after the first line takes you to the headline range.
Hotels, a welcome dinner, a farewell brunch, an afterparty and extra hours are on top. A big floral installation or a ten-piece band will take you past the high end quickly.
What the Venue Fee Includes
The $10,000 buys the Lake Room with its own event entrance, and the people who make it run: an event manager, servers, bartenders, kitchen staff, security, housekeeping, restroom attendants and a coat check. Wi-Fi is included, and so is the shuttle that carries guests in from the edge of the park.
The house furniture is good enough to use: round dining tables, cocktail tables, mobile bars, 210 chairs, linen, china, glassware and flatware. Spend your rental budget on the things guests touch and see up close, such as chairs or a statement linen, and leave the rest.
You also get five parking spaces at the venue. Give them to the band, the florist and whoever is driving the grandparents.
Flowers, music, photography, a planner, lighting beyond the house set-up and a wedding cake are yours to arrange. Dessert is part of the menu, so a cake is optional.
Capacity & Event Spaces
- Lake Room: 200 seated, 350 standing, 250 in theater rows. About 4,300 square feet. Your ceremony, dinner and dancing
- Lake Room patio: Outdoors, beside the room. Your cocktail hour in good weather
- Fireside Room: 50 seated or standing. The right room for a small wedding or a rehearsal dinner
- Main Dining Room: 100 seated, 150 standing. The restaurant; a buyout is a separate booking
- Dockside: 80 seated, 100 standing. The open-air bar by the boats
- Bridal suite: Beside the Lake Room, for touch-ups and a quiet ten minutes. Not somewhere to sleep
How we would use it
Hold the ceremony in the Lake Room with the chairs facing the water. Move everyone to the patio for cocktails while the staff turn the room, then bring them back in for dinner.
Stay with round tables. They are the house inventory, so they cost nothing extra, and the staff know exactly how they fit. Put the dance floor in the center from the start so nothing has to be moved after dinner.
At 200 guests, choose a DJ or a compact band. A ten-piece band and 20 tables do not both fit comfortably.
The best trick the Boathouse has is on the water. One recent couple met their photographer at Bethesda Fountain during cocktails, took a rowboat out for portraits and rowed up to their own cocktail hour. Boats rent from the dock for $25 an hour Monday to Thursday and $30 Friday to Sunday, first come first served, and the last one goes out an hour before dusk. Send a groomsman to hold one.
Rain Plan
This is one of the easier rain plans in New York. The ceremony and dinner are indoors whatever happens, in a heated and air-conditioned room.
The cocktail hour is the piece to settle. In good weather it is on the patio. In bad weather, 150 people need somewhere to stand for an hour while the Lake Room is turned, and the 50-person Fireside Room will not hold them. One recent couple's backup was a sectioned-off part of the restaurant by the bay windows. Ask for the same, and get it written into your contract with the guest count.
Do not plan on a tent. This is a public park, and the indoor plan should be one you like on its own.
Rain matters more on the way in. Have the shuttle running continuously from Fifth Avenue, put someone at the park entrance with umbrellas, and tell guests in advance that the coat check is there for wet coats and walking shoes.
Accommodation & Where Guests Should Stay
Nobody sleeps at the Boathouse. Get ready at your hotel and treat the bridal suite as a place to fix your hair, not start it.
Put guests on the Upper East Side if you can. The park entrance is at 72nd and Fifth, and anyone staying in the 70s can walk to it.
- The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel, 35 East 76th Street: Where we would put the couple and both sets of parents. A few blocks from the park entrance, and the right kind of lobby to leave from in a wedding dress
- JW Marriott Essex House New York, 160 Central Park South: The better choice for a large room block, with space for a welcome party. It is at the bottom of the park, so guests will need a car up Fifth Avenue
- Hilton Garden Inn New York/Manhattan-Midtown East, 206 East 52nd Street: The lower-priced option for friends watching their budget. A short cab ride or the 6 train north
Keep the block to one or two hotels. If you run a coach from the hotel, it stops at Fifth Avenue and guests change to the Boathouse shuttle. Tell the coach company that before they quote.
Catering & Vendor Requirements
Food and drink
The Boathouse does all the food and drink. You cannot bring a caterer. Menus can be customized, and vegan and gluten-free courses are part of the wedding offering.
Use the tasting to decide the two entrées and to settle the small things that change the bill: children's meals, a late-night snack, and whether you want a cake on top of the plated dessert.
Your own team
Bring the florist, photographer and band you want. The Boathouse approves outside vendors and asks each for a certificate of insurance, and it has a preferred list if you would rather start there.
Hire a planner, or at least a coordinator for the final month. The Boathouse's event manager runs the room and the kitchen. Someone else needs to run the hotel block, the shuttle timing, vendor load-in through the park and the rain call.
Vendors cannot drive up when they like. Deliveries into the park are by permit and arranged with the venue, so give your florist and band the load-in window early. A recent proposal allowed set-up from noon for a 6 p.m. start.
Music and the end of the night
Plan on a midnight finish. If you want to keep going, book a bar on the Upper East Side for the afterparty. One couple ran coaches from Fifth Avenue to theirs and hired pedicabs to carry guests from the Boathouse to the park entrance all night, which guests loved.
Ceremony Options
Most couples marry in the Lake Room and walk straight into cocktails. It is the best option at this size. Asking 150 guests to gather elsewhere in the park and then walk to dinner adds a permit, a rain risk and a lot of walking in heels.
If you want a church, the Upper East Side has plenty within a few blocks of the park. St. Jean Baptiste on Lexington Avenue at 76th Street is one that Boathouse couples have used, with portraits in the park on the way over.
A small ceremony elsewhere in Central Park needs an NYC Parks special-event permit for groups of 20 or more ($25), and the rules on chairs, decoration and amplified sound are tight. Save it for an elopement.
For the paperwork: a New York City marriage license costs $35, there is a 24-hour wait before you can use it, and it lasts 60 days. A friend can officiate with a one-day license for $25.
Getting There & Transportation
Tell guests to take a taxi to East 72nd Street and Fifth Avenue. Put those exact words on the invitation and the wedding website. A driver given only the venue name has nowhere to pull up.
From there it is about a six-minute walk, or a ride on the shuttle that comes with every Lake Room event. From the West Side, the walk from West 72nd Street and Central Park West is about 12 minutes.
Start the shuttle 45 minutes before the ceremony and keep it looping until the last guest has left. The park is dark at midnight and nobody wants to walk out in heels.
- Subway: The 6 to 77th Street, or the B or C to 72nd Street on the West Side
- Parking: The Boathouse points drivers to the garage at 910 Fifth Avenue
- Step-free access: The event space and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. Tell the venue in advance about any guest who cannot manage the walk
Airports
- LaGuardia (LGA): About 30–60 minutes. Tell guests to fly here if they have the choice
- JFK: About 60–90 minutes
- Newark (EWR): About 60–100 minutes
Do Wedding Guests Need a Car?
No. A car is a liability on the Upper East Side. Taxis, the subway and their own feet will cover the whole weekend.
Best Time of Year for a Central Park Boathouse Wedding
Pick September. The park is still green, the average high is in the mid-70s, the summer humidity has eased and the evening light on the Lake is at its best. May and early June are next, with the park in new leaf and highs in the 70s.
July and August average in the mid-80s and feel hotter. The room is air-conditioned, but the patio and the walk in are not, so hold the ceremony late and keep portraits short.
October is the gamble that pays best: fall color around the Lake, highs in the mid-60s, and dusk early enough that you should take portraits before the ceremony.
Winter works here in a way it does not at most park venues, because nothing depends on being outside. Come for the room, the bare trees and the lower price, and plan cocktails indoors.
It rains about four inches a month in New York all year. No month is the dry one.
If you are marrying in 2027: Bethesda Fountain
Bethesda Fountain, a short walk from the Boathouse, has been switched off and fenced for restoration since August 2026, and the work is expected to take about a year. The Terrace and its tiled arcade are open. For a 2027 wedding, plan portraits at Bow Bridge, under the arcade and along the Mall, and treat the fountain as a bonus if the fences are down.
The Weekend, and What to Do Around the Park
The Boathouse is one evening. The rest of the weekend belongs to the Upper East Side, which is the easiest neighborhood in Manhattan to give to out-of-town guests.
Friday. Hold the welcome party near the hotels, not across town. A private room at a neighborhood restaurant on Madison or Lexington keeps everyone within walking distance of bed.
Saturday morning. Send guests into the park. The model sailboats on Conservatory Water are at 74th Street, the Alice in Wonderland statue is beside it, and Bow Bridge and the Ramble are a short walk further in. The Boathouse rents its rowboats to anyone from 10 a.m.
Sunday. The Boathouse restaurant serves brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is a good way for family to see the Lake again in daylight, and it takes bookings for groups.
For the wedding website:
- Museums: The Frick Collection at 70th and Fifth, the Metropolitan Museum at 82nd, and the Neue Galerie at 86th, all on the same side of the park as the wedding
- Coffee and lunch: Via Quadronno on East 73rd Street, Sant Ambroeus on Madison Avenue, Café Sabarsky inside the Neue Galerie
- A burger and a beer: JG Melon on Third Avenue at 74th Street
- A nightcap: Bemelmans Bar at The Carlyle
- For guests on the West Side: Strawberry Fields is just inside the park at West 72nd Street, on the way to the Boathouse
Best For / Things to Consider
Best For
- Weddings of 120 to 180 guests
- Couples who want Central Park and a dependable indoor plan in the same venue
- Couples who would rather choose a menu than hire a caterer, rentals and staff
- New York families, and guests visiting the city for the first time
- Winter weddings
Things to Consider
- The charges and tax add a third to every dollar of food, drink and room
- No one can be driven to the door
- No bedrooms, so getting ready and the afterparty happen elsewhere
- In-house catering only
- A wet-weather cocktail hour needs a second space agreed in advance
- It is a public park. Expect rowers, runners and the odd onlooker in your photographs
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- What is the venue fee and food-and-beverage minimum for our date, and is there a guest minimum on Saturdays?
- Are any seasonal or winter offers available?
- Where do our guests have cocktails if it rains, and can that space be written into the contract?
- Can we see a floor plan for our guest count with the dance floor and our band drawn in?
- What time must music end, and can we buy a later finish?
- Where does the shuttle pick up on Fifth Avenue, how many does it carry, when does it start and stop, and can it take a wheelchair?
- Is the patio ours alone during cocktail hour, and is it covered or heated?
- Can we reserve a rowboat for portraits, and is the gondola available to hire?
- What are the bridal suite hours, and when can vendors load in and out?
- What is on each bar list, and what does a late-night snack or a sixth hour of bar cost?
- Is there a cake-cutting fee, and what do children's meals cost?
- What are the payment dates and the cancellation and postponement terms?

Tavern on the Green. The other restaurant wedding inside Central Park, on the west side near 67th Street. Choose it if you want a courtyard more than you want water, or if most guests are staying on the West Side.
JW Marriott Essex House. A hotel ballroom on Central Park South. The Grand Salon seats 200 with a dance floor and everyone goes upstairs at the end of the night. Better if keeping the group in one building matters more than the Lake.
Prospect Park Boathouse. A 1905 Beaux-Arts boathouse on the water in Brooklyn, with up to 150 for dinner and dancing and catering by Purslane. Better for a smaller list and a couple who live in Brooklyn.

For the Boathouse, the question is whether dinner on the Lake is worth a high per-person bill and an arrival on foot. For 150 guests in September, we think it is.
