Going out in your 30s can mean a few different things. Some nights you want two seats at a bar, a well-made drink and enough quiet to actually talk. Some nights dinner turns into another round. And some nights you want a band or a dance floor and end up out later than you planned.
Phoenix does all three, but the good bars are spread out. Downtown and Roosevelt Row have the most variety in one walkable area. Melrose and Central Phoenix bring neighborhood bars, live music and the city's LGBTQ+ nightlife. Arcadia and the Biltmore area mix destination cocktail bars with reliable locals' spots. Scottsdale, Tempe and one Paradise Valley resort bar round out the list.
This guide covers 37 bars: 28 in Phoenix, one in Paradise Valley, five in Scottsdale and three in Tempe. They're grouped by area, not ranked. Expect mixed ages; the night of the week and what's on the calendar shape a room more than any over-30 label.

Pick the Time as Carefully as the Bar
For drinks and conversation, aim for roughly 6–8 p.m., especially in smaller rooms like Bar 1912, Highball, Sauvage and Mixela. The same bars can be louder and more crowded later in the night.
For music and dancing, choose the event first. Valley Bar, Crescent Ballroom, Thunderbird, The Womack, Rhythm Room, Boycott and Charlie's feel completely different from one night to the next. And because Phoenix is spread out, pick one area and a main stop instead of trying to cross the city in one evening.
Downtown Phoenix and Roosevelt Row Bars
Downtown has the widest range in one place: serious cocktail rooms, a dive with late food, a beer patio, two music venues and an underground game room. Roosevelt Row works on foot; the rest of downtown is a short ride away.

Pretty Penny
509 E Roosevelt St, Phoenix, AZ 85004, USA
Pretty Penny comes from the team behind several of Roosevelt Row's best cocktail bars, and the drinks are as serious as the seafood-leaning, internationally inspired menu. It's a dressed-up room that still feels relaxed, good for a date or two couples settling in for the night. Good to know: Reserve for Friday or Saturday; weekend walk-ins are a gamble.

Rough Rider
1001 N Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85004, USA
Rough Rider sits in the basement of the Ten-O-One building, a Teddy Roosevelt-inspired room built around 19th-century-style cocktails and a full dinner menu. It covers drinks and a real meal in one stop, and finding the entrance is part of the fun. Good to know: Book ahead for dinner and weekends.

BARCOA Agaveria
829 N 1st Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85003, USA
BARCOA has two moods at one address: a casual upstairs cantina with a patio, and a dark basement bar devoted to tequila, mezcal and sotol. Start upstairs while friends trickle in, then head down once everyone's ready to drink agave properly. Good to know: Reservations are available, and the bar runs private tastings for groups.

Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour
1 W Jefferson St, Phoenix, AZ 85003, USA
Bitter & Twisted fills the ground floor of the historic Luhrs Building, once home to Arizona's Prohibition headquarters. The illustrated cocktail book runs for dozens of pages, and the room is big enough for a group meeting before a Suns game or a concert. Go early for conversation; later it's loud and busy. Good to know: 21+. Reserve or join the waitlist, and plan for downtown parking on event nights.

Little Rituals
132 S Central Ave 4th Floor, Phoenix, AZ 85004, USA
Take the Residence Inn elevator to the fourth floor and you'll find the bar named Best U.S. Hotel Bar at the 2025 Spirited Awards. The drinks are precise without being fussy, the windows look out over downtown, and the full kitchen means you can make a night of it. Birthdays and anniversaries land well here. Good to know: Seated, 21+ and limited capacity. Reservations are strongly recommended and are usually held for two hours.

Gracie's Tax Bar
711 N 7th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85007, USA
Gracie's moved into an old tax-prep office and kept the sign. Inside it's a women-owned, LGBTQ+-friendly neighborhood dive with wood paneling, board games, mini pitchers of house beer and bar food served late. The jukebox has won local Best Jukebox honors more than once. Come for one round and stay for four. Good to know: Walk in. It stays open late; check the website for current days.

The Theodore
110 E Roosevelt St Ste c, Phoenix, AZ 85004, USA
Another Teddy Roosevelt tribute on the street named for him, The Theodore pours around two dozen taps heavy on Arizona breweries, plus local sake, mead, cider and wine for anyone skipping beer. The bar opens onto a patio along Roosevelt Street, which makes it an easy meeting point, especially on First Fridays. Good to know: Walk in. Check the calendar for trivia and tastings.

Lucky's Indoor Outdoor
817 N 2nd St, Phoenix, AZ 85004, USA
Lucky's is two bars in one: a vintage-feeling room inside and a big backyard with a 1970s trailer bar, picnic tables, bocce and rotating food trucks. Friends can drift between the two instead of guarding one table, which is exactly what a group with staggered arrivals needs. It fills up later, so come early for seats. Good to know: Walk in. Contact the bar ahead for large gatherings or a buyout.

Valley Bar
130 N Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85004, USA
Valley Bar is down an alley off Central Avenue and below street level. The Rose Room, named for former Gov. Rose Mofford, pours drinks named after Arizona politicians. There's a game room with Skee-Ball and shuffleboard, and the music hall hosts bands, comedy and DJ nights. A show makes the night, but it works without a ticket too. Good to know: The bar is walk-in. Shows need tickets, and some have age limits.

Crescent Ballroom
308 N 2nd Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85003, USA
Crescent is a roughly 550-capacity music room with a lounge and kitchen attached, so you can eat, drink and walk into the show without moving the car. Pick the night by the lineup and build the rest of the evening around door time. Good to know: Tickets, door times and age rules vary by show.

LATHA
628 E Adams St, Phoenix, AZ 85004, USA
LATHA sits on Heritage Square, the last original residential block of the Phoenix townsite, and cooks food from across the African diaspora with cocktails to match. Friday nights usually bring live music, so dinner tends to run into the rest of the evening. It's a strong pick for birthdays and friend groups who want more than a standard bar. Good to know: Reserve, and contact the restaurant ahead for groups of more than eight.

The Duce
525 S Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85004, USA
The Duce fills a 1928 brick warehouse with a bar, the old bleachers from St. Mary's High School, ping pong, cornhole, shuffleboard and foosball. It's a roomy, playful choice for a group that wants something to do besides drink, and it hosts parties and events on top of that. Good to know: Check the calendar; some events are ticketed and have their own rules.

Central Phoenix, Melrose and Uptown Bars
North of downtown, the bars get more neighborhood-driven: Arizona-focused cocktails and the city's LGBTQ+ bars along Seventh Avenue, natural wine on McDowell Road, and a rooftop and live music in Uptown. Plan on short rides between clusters.

Bar 1912
4130 N 7th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85013, USA
Bar 1912 is the evening bar at the back of Valentine, and its menu is a love letter to Arizona, built on local ingredients and the state's history, down to a set of drinks named for Arizona's Five C's. The room is small, so bring one other person and a long conversation, not a birthday group. Good to know: Mostly walk-in, so expect a wait at peak times.

Highball
1514 N 7th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85007, USA
Upstairs at Seventh Avenue and McDowell, Highball has leather Chesterfields, chandeliers and one of the city's most decorated bar teams; co-owner Libby Lingua was a top-four finalist for U.S. Bartender of the Year in 2026. Early in the evening it's a seated cocktail date. On weekends it gets loud in the good way, and a shareable punch bowl helps with small groups. Good to know: Reserve, especially on weekends. The bar is on the second floor, so ask about accessibility. Groups of 11 or more should email ahead.

Thunderbird Lounge
710 W Montecito Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85013, USA
Thunderbird is a '70s-flavored lounge in the historic Wagon Wheel Building, with arcade games, cheap cans and a busy weekly calendar: karaoke, drag bingo, a Jeopardy! bar league, DJ parties and ticketed shows. On a quiet night it's an easy place to talk. On an event night it's a party. Good to know: Walk in. Some shows are ticketed and 21+.

The Womack
5749 N 7th St, Phoenix, AZ 85014, USA
The Womack is a dim, indoor-outdoor cocktail lounge with live music most nights and a soul-leaning sound. Get there before the band starts for a conversation and a good seat, then let the music take over. Good to know: Check the music schedule and arrive before the set.

Don Woods' Say When
400 W Camelback Rd Bldg F, Phoenix, AZ 85013, USA
On top of the Rise Uptown hotel, Say When is a 1960s-style rooftop lounge from Ross Simon, the cocktail mind behind Bitter & Twisted, with fire pits and views of the skyline and Camelback Mountain. Sunset is the reason to come. Treat it as a great first round, not an all-nighter. Good to know: Check current days before you go, and book ahead for larger parties.

Sauvage
149 W McDowell Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85003, USA
Sauvage grew from a tiny bottle shop into the historic Helen Anderson House, and the inside feels like a well-stocked friend's living room: antique chairs, settees, curio cabinets and a constantly rotating list of natural wines. Early evening is for a long catch-up; on DJ nights the same rooms turn into a dance party. Midweek chef pop-ups are worth planning around. Good to know: Check the calendar for chef dinners and DJs, and ask ahead for groups of six or more.

The Joy Lush Club
24 W Camelback Rd Ste D & E, Phoenix, AZ 85013, USA
Joy Lush is a neighborhood beer and wine bar and bottle shop with hard-to-find pours, games and a real nonalcoholic list. It closes earlier than most bars here, which is part of the appeal for a weeknight catch-up. It's also a short walk from the Central/Camelback light-rail stop, a rare convenience in Phoenix. Good to know: Closed Mondays. It winds down early, so don't plan it as a last stop.

Rhythm Room
1019 E Indian School Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85014, USA
This is the Rhythm Room's last season. Harmonica player Bob Corritore opened the club in 1991 and is closing it on May 30, 2027, so any show between now and then doubles as a goodbye to one of Phoenix's best small rooms for blues, roots and rock. Pick an artist you want to see and go. Good to know: Tickets and age rules vary by show.

Boycott Bar
4301 N 7th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85013, USA
Boycott is Arizona's only lesbian bar and one of the few left anywhere in the country, with a hot-pink sign that reads "A Place for Everyone." Owner Audrey Corley started it as a roaming party before settling on the Melrose strip in 2017, and the calendar still runs on DJs, drag, karaoke and line dancing. Good to know: 21+. Check the calendar for the night you want.

Charlie's Phoenix
727 W Camelback Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85013, USA
Charlie's has been the city's country-western gay bar since 1984, with two-stepping under the disco boots, drag shows, karaoke and a big patio with its own bars. Free early-evening line-dance lessons make an easy first visit; stay late and the dance floor takes over. Good to know: 21+. Check the calendar for lesson nights, shows and cover.
Arcadia, Biltmore, East Phoenix and Paradise Valley Bars
The east side splits into destination cocktail bars and comfortable locals' places along Indian School Road. One main stop plus a nearby second is usually all a night needs.

Century Grand
3626 E Indian School Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85018, USA
Century Grand is one building with separate experiences: Platform 18, set inside a vintage Pullman train car; UnderTow, a rum-forward tiki bar built like the hull of a 19th-century clipper ship; and the rotating Grey Hen Rx. The setting is the point, so make it the centerpiece of the night. Good to know: Reserve Platform 18 and UnderTow, especially on weekends. Seatings are timed.

Sunny's Lounge
2701 E Indian School Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85016, USA
When the beloved dive Shady's closed, the Century Grand team took over and kept the dark, windowless, wood-paneled room and the pool table, then upgraded the drinks. They built it as the bar they want industry people to land in after a shift, which tells you the mood. It's also an easy next stop after a Century Grand seating. Good to know: Walk in. Check for DJ nights and guest-bartender shifts.

The Wandering Tortoise
2417 E Indian School Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85016, USA
The Wandering Tortoise is pickier about its 22 taps than most beer bars, with a lean toward IPAs and sours, plus wine by the glass and a bottle shop for the drive home. There's no kitchen, so food trucks often park out front. Expect board games, a relaxed crowd and plenty of room to talk. Good to know: Small room and a small shared lot, so keep groups manageable.

Mixela
3410 N 24th St, Phoenix, AZ 85016, USA
Mixela is a small aperitivo bar from a couple whose backgrounds run from Venezuela to Mexico to Monaco. Wine by the glass, local beer, Arizona-made sake and spritz-style cocktails come with crudos and small plates, and the nonalcoholic list is real. The compact room fits a date or two close friends far better than a party. Good to know: The weekly schedule is limited, so confirm hours before you go.

The Dirty Drummer
2303 N 44th St, Phoenix, AZ 85008, USA
The Dirty Drummer has been pouring for more than four decades and still feels like it, with a country-and-western jukebox, grilled wings and weekend shows from local country, Americana and indie bands. Weekly karaoke fills the gaps. It's a real neighborhood bar, not a theme. Good to know: Check the entertainment calendar; table reservations are offered for some shows.

The Little Woody
4228 E Indian School Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85018, USA
The Little Woody is dark, lodge-like and made for a small crew: whiskey, cocktails and bar games, with none of the production of the cocktail destinations down the road. It's a good late stop after dinner in Arcadia. Good to know: Walk in. Earlier is better if you want a table.

Jade Bar
5700 E McDonald Dr, Paradise Valley, AZ 85253, USA
Inside Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, Jade Bar has a backlit jade-onyx bar rail, a terrace and one of the best sunset views in the Valley. Come before dark for a date or a special early drink. Some nights there's hand-rolled sushi at the bar, too. Good to know: Walk in. Happy hour runs daily in the late afternoon.
Scottsdale Bars for a Night Out in Your 30s
Scottsdale has more to offer than bottle-service clubs. Four of these bars are in Old Town and walkable together; Tell Your Friends is a drive north and worth planning a whole night around.

The Beverly on Main
7018 E Main St, Scottsdale, AZ 85251, USA
The Beverly kept the dramatic interior of the old Mabel's on Main and loosened the attitude. Go early for a table and a real conversation; by late evening it's one of Old Town's livelier rooms without tipping into club territory. Good to know: Reserve if seating matters. It turns 21+ later in the evening.

Coach House
7011 E Indian School Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85251, USA
The Brower family has run the Coach House since 1959, making it the city's oldest tavern. The main bar is tiny and usually packed, the patio is big with views toward Camelback Mountain, and from late November the whole place is buried in Christmas lights. It's a real tavern after a night of polished concepts. Good to know: Opens early and closes late. Expect crowds at night.

Porters Western Saloon
3944 N Brown Ave, Scottsdale, AZ 85251, USA
Porters fills Scottsdale's first post office, the building with the horse on the balcony, with brick walls, chandeliers and Western-leaning cocktails. It has saloon character without the noise of the themed spots on Main Street, so it works as a calm round between dinner and somewhere livelier. Good to know: Walk in. Check closing times for your night.

Tell Your Friends
17797 N Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85255, USA
Down a staircase beneath The Americano, Tell Your Friends is a Gatsby-inspired lounge with neon, velvet, disco balls and live performers on a small stage. Save it for a birthday or a big date night that deserves a plan. Good to know: Reserve. The upscale dress code is enforced, and an entertainment charge may apply on music nights.
Tempe Bars Beyond Mill Avenue
Skip the Mill Avenue college bars. Tempe's best grown-up options are a brewery taproom in an old house, a historic oyster bar with a huge patio and a music dive that has outlasted almost everything around it.

The Shop Beer Co.
922 W 1st St, Tempe, AZ 85281, USA
The Shop's taproom is a renovated house that once belonged to a Tempe mayor, with a backyard beer garden between the bar and the brewhouse. It's known for Church Music hazy IPA and Crispy lager, and the patio is at its best in the late afternoon. Good to know: No kitchen of its own, so check for the food truck before counting on dinner.

Casey Moore's Oyster House
850 S Ash Ave, Tempe, AZ 85281, USA
Casey Moore's fills a house built around 1910, wrapped in a sprawling patio, with oysters, pub food and a long-running reputation for being haunted. It draws neighborhood regulars and ASU alumni more than the Mill Avenue crowd, and it works for anything from a date to a big group outside. Good to know: Walk in. Arrive before peak hours for a patio table.

Yucca Tap Room
29 W Southern Ave, Tempe, AZ 85282, USA
Yucca has outlasted decades of Tempe bars from a strip-mall corner on Southern Avenue. Three rooms cover live music, vintage pinball and pool, and the calendar runs from local punk to touring indie bands. Go when there's a show you want to see. Good to know: Shows are ticketed and have their own age rules.
Nights to Build Around
Roosevelt Row cocktails and a social finish. Book Pretty Penny for dinner and drinks, walk to The Theodore for a beer on the patio, and finish in the backyard at Lucky's if the group still has energy.
Dinner, then a show. Book Rough Rider or LATHA, then pick a Valley Bar or Crescent Ballroom show. Work backward from door time when you book dinner.
Wine and cocktails on McDowell. Start with natural wine at Sauvage, then head about half a mile west to Highball for a cocktail upstairs.
Melrose cocktails and a party. Begin at Bar 1912, then pick Thunderbird for whatever's on the calendar, Boycott for DJs and drag, or Charlie's for line dancing.
Uptown sunset and music. Catch sunset on the Say When rooftop, then choose an early, easy round at Joy Lush or live music at The Womack.
Arcadia's big night. Make a Century Grand seating the centerpiece, then go to Sunny's for one more cocktail or The Little Woody for a looser finish.
Old Town without the clubs. Start with martinis at AZ/88, move to The Beverly for a second round, and finish at Coach House or the quieter Porters.
