Best Christmas Lights & Holiday Displays in Charleston (2026)

Run a business in this guide, or want yours added? Get in touch. Or get featured.

Charleston doesn't keep its holiday lights in one tidy downtown district. The biggest show is on James Island, the prettiest free displays are scattered across the peninsula, and many of the best neighborhood streets are across the Cooper River in Mount Pleasant.

That spread is part of the fun. You can build a completely different night around a drive-through light show, a downtown walk, a candlelit historic house, a waterfront parade or a slow loop through neighborhoods where residents go all out. Below are the displays worth planning around for 2026, from the big ticketed shows to the free stops and one-night events locals come back to every December.

Most major events have announced their 2026 schedules. Cougar Night Lights and the Holiday Parade of Boats haven't yet, so those cards are marked 2026 dates TBA.

The Major Christmas Light Shows in Charleston

These are the two ticketed shows worth building a whole evening around. Buy ahead for both, since prices go up closer to the night.

Holiday Festival of Lights

Holiday Festival of Lights

871 Riverland Dr, Charleston, SC 29412, USA

Charleston's biggest light show: a three-mile drive through James Island County Park with 750+ displays, plus a festival village with a train, carousel, marshmallow roasting and Santa through Dec 23. Nov 13 to Dec 31, nightly 5:30 to 10 p.m. Pick a green or yellow night, buy online and arrive right at opening or after 8. Open Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Details: from $15 per car online; one admission covers up to 15 people.

Aquarium Aglow

Aquarium Aglow

100 Aquarium Wharf, Charleston, SC 29401, USA

The best walk-through display and Charleston's top rain plan. Dozens of light installations indoors and out, plus Scuba Claus in the Great Ocean Tank. A 7 or 7:30 p.m. slot is usually cheaper and calmer. Details: select nights Nov 20 to Dec 31, 5:30 to 9 p.m., timed entry, from about $25.95 adults. Park at the 24 Calhoun Street garage.

Free Christmas Displays in Downtown Charleston

These four sit within an easy walk of each other between King Street, Meeting Street and Marion Square. Park once and do them together.

The Charleston Place

The Charleston Place

205 Meeting St, Charleston, SC 29401, USA

The hotel's holiday train is the draw: a working miniature railway winding through alpine villages and a model mountain around the grand lobby staircase, a Charleston tradition for more than two decades. Free. Go on a weekday before dinner or later in the evening, and keep the stairs clear for hotel guests.

Cougar Night Lights at Cistern Yard

Cougar Night Lights at Cistern Yard

66 George St, Charleston, SC 29424, USA

Thousands of lights hang beneath Cistern Yard's live oaks in a canopy inspired by Spanish moss, synced to music students help pick. Free. 2026 dates TBA; last season shows ran every half hour from 5:30 to 9 p.m., early December through New Year's Day. A 15- to 20-minute stop timed to a show.

American Gardens Holiday Village

American Gardens Holiday Village

174 King St, Charleston, SC 29401, USA

The best all-in-one downtown stop: a 40-foot tree, a Venetian-style carousel, a holiday market and Santa on select Saturdays. Nov 27 to Dec 31; free entry, some activities charge. Start here at dusk, then walk to The Charleston Place. No parking or public restroom in the garden.

Hotel Bennett

Hotel Bennett

404 King St, Charleston, SC 29403, USA

A life-size gingerbread house built by the hotel's pastry team, on view from Nov 21. The free tree lighting is Thu, Dec 3, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with caroling and Santa. Pair it with Marion Square and Cistern Yard for a free family evening.

One-Night Holiday Events Worth Planning Around

These only happen once, so put them on the calendar now. Fri, Dec 4 is crowded: Light the Lake, Christmas in the Circle and the Aiken-Rhett candlelight tour all land that night.

Light the Lake at Colonial Lake

Light the Lake at Colonial Lake

Colonial Lake, Charleston, SC 29401, USA

For one night, about 1,000 luminaries ring Colonial Lake and a decorated tree glows in the water, with music, crafts and hot chocolate. Fri, Dec 4, 5 to 8 p.m. Free. Arrive before sunset to watch it light up, and walk or take a rideshare since parking is tight.

Charleston Holiday Parade & Tree Lighting

Charleston Holiday Parade & Tree Lighting

329 Meeting St, Charleston, SC 29403, USA

The city parade runs from Broad Street near Colonial Lake up Meeting Street to Marion Square, where the tree lighting follows. Sun, Dec 6; parade at 3 p.m. Free. The route starts closing around 2, so get downtown early and park a few blocks from the square.

Mount Pleasant Christmas Light Parade

Live Oak Dr & Coleman Blvd, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464, USA

The region's biggest one-night light event: fireworks, then bands and glowing floats from Live Oak Drive down Coleman Boulevard to Patriots Point Road, with Santa on a firetruck. Sun, Dec 13, starting at 5:30 p.m. Free. Arrive 60 to 90 minutes early with chairs, and park with your exit in mind.

Lights Up at Mount Pleasant Towne Centre

Lights Up at Mount Pleasant Towne Centre

1218 Belk Dr, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464, USA

A polished kickoff night with performances, Santa and a 44-foot tree. Sat, Nov 21, 6 to 8 p.m.; tree and laser show at 7:30. Free. Eat first or book dinner after, and don't arrive at 7:20 expecting a good spot.

Christmas in the Circle

Christmas in the Circle

Park Cir, North Charleston, SC 29405, USA

A true neighborhood tree lighting: a 40-foot Norway spruce with ornaments made by local schoolkids, plus choirs, Santa and cocoa. Fri, Dec 4, 5 to 8 p.m.; lighting at 6:30. Free. The tree stays lit through New Year's Day, so come back on a quiet weeknight for photos.

Holiday Parade of Boats

Holiday Parade of Boats

Vendue Range, Concord St, Charleston, SC 29401, USA

Decorated boats parade from the Cooper River through Charleston Harbor into the Ashley River. 2026 date TBA, usually a Saturday in mid-December. Free. Watch from the Battery or Waterfront Park, arrive before dark, bring a layer and check the schedule for weather.

Historic Charleston Holiday Tours and Decorations

These are less about light shows and more about seeing Charleston's historic homes dressed for the season. The house museums and Boone Hall also tell the full story of these properties, including the enslaved people whose labor built and sustained them, and that context is part of the visit, not a footnote.

Candlelight Tour of Private Homes

Candlelight Tour of Private Homes

147 King St, Charleston, SC 29401, USA

A self-guided evening through decorated private historic homes normally closed to the public. Thu, Dec 10, 5 to 8 p.m.; ticketed, addresses sent three to five days before. Book early, wear flat shoes and skip a mid-tour dinner reservation. No photos on private property.

Nathaniel Russell House Candlelight Tour

Nathaniel Russell House Candlelight Tour

51 Meeting St, Charleston, SC 29401, USA

The polished choice: a 45-minute candlelight tour of a celebrated Federal-era house. Fri, Nov 20 and Sat, Nov 21; entry every half hour 5:30 to 7 p.m. $45, ages 12 and up.

Aiken-Rhett House Candlelight Tour

Aiken-Rhett House Candlelight Tour

48 Elizabeth St, Charleston, SC 29403, USA

The moodier counterpart: a preserved rather than restored house that's striking by candlelight. Fri, Dec 4 and Sat, Dec 5; entry every half hour 5:30 to 7 p.m. $45, ages 12 and up. Not wheelchair accessible or stroller friendly.

Joseph Manigault House

Joseph Manigault House

350 Meeting St, Charleston, SC 29403, USA

A quieter daytime stop, decorated with natural materials that would have been on hand in the early 1800s Lowcountry. Dec 5 to Dec 27; included with regular admission. Go in the afternoon, then walk to Hotel Bennett and Marion Square as the lights come on.

Christmas at Boone Hall

Christmas at Boone Hall

1235 Long Point Rd, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464, USA

The house and grounds dressed with live trees, magnolia wreaths and ornaments made from sweetgrass, cotton and berries. Dec 7 to Jan 1; included with regular admission. The free Christmas Tree Festival at Boone Hall Farms runs Nov 21 and 22. A daytime visit; leave time for the property's full history.

Holiday Displays Worth the Drive

Each of these is its own outing from downtown Charleston, not an add-on to a peninsula night.

Celebrate the Season

Celebrate the Season

900 Stony Lndg Rd, Moncks Corner, SC 29461, USA

A smaller, calmer and cheaper drive-through, ideal for families north of the city. Nov 27 to Dec 30, 6 to 9 p.m.; closed Dec 24 and 25. Details: $10 per car; $20 on Holiday in the Park nights (Dec 11 to 13 and 18 to 20) with Santa, crafts and food.

Summerville Old Time Christmas

Summerville Old Time Christmas

Summerville, SC 29483, USA

Small-town Christmas around the town tree in Hutchinson Square, with food trucks, vendors, Santa and a shop-window contest. Tue, Dec 1, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.; lighting at 6. Free. Drive through Nexton afterward.

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island

1 Sanctuary Beach Dr, Kiawah Island, SC 29455, USA

The best resort-style Christmas outside downtown, known for lavish lobby decorations and an elaborate chocolate display. Free to view; some activities ticketed. Worth it if you're staying on Kiawah or making a full island day of it, but a long drive just for the lobby.

The Best Charleston Neighborhoods for Christmas Lights

Residential displays change every year, so think of these as routes with good odds rather than promises about any one house. Go between 6 and 9 p.m. in the first three weeks of December, drive slowly, keep the music down, don't block driveways and stay on public streets.

The best overall loop is in south Mount Pleasant: start in Hidden Cove, continue through Coopers Landing and Hidden Bridge Drive, and finish in I'On or Old Village. Allow about 90 minutes.

South Mount Pleasant Loop

South Mount Pleasant Loop

I'On, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464, USA

End the Mount Pleasant loop here: wreaths, porches and pretty streets rather than flashing displays. Allow about 90 minutes for the full loop.

North Mount Pleasant: Liberty Hill Farm and Carolina Park

North Mount Pleasant: Liberty Hill Farm and Carolina Park

Carolina Park Blvd, Mt Pleasant, SC 29466, USA

Pairs with Liberty Hill Farm, especially around Agate Bay Drive and Goodwater Street. Easy to combine with the Mount Pleasant Towne Centre tree.

Park Circle and Otranto

Otranto, North Charleston, SC 29406, USA

Add on after the Park Circle tree for decorated streets in a quieter North Charleston neighborhood. Best on a weeknight after Christmas in the Circle.

West Ashley and Summerville: Carolina Bay and Nexton

West Ashley and Summerville: Carolina Bay and Nexton

3009 Amberbrook Ln, Charleston, SC 29414, USA

West Ashley's best bet for a light drive. Big enough to turn up a few good clusters most years; make it an after-dinner add-on.

Three Easy Charleston Christmas-Light Itineraries

The free downtown walk. Start at American Gardens around dusk for the tree, carousel and market. Walk to The Charleston Place for the train, then head north to Hotel Bennett and Marion Square, and finish with a Cougar Night Lights show at Cistern Yard. Allow about two hours without a long dinner. On Fri, Dec 4, add Light the Lake by rideshare.

The big family night. Make the Holiday Festival of Lights the whole evening. Arrive around 5:30, drive the loop, park for the train and village, roast marshmallows and take a second lap on the way out if the line is short. Don't try to squeeze a downtown stop in afterward.

The Mount Pleasant drive. Start at Mount Pleasant Towne Centre, then work through Hidden Cove and Coopers Landing and finish in I'On or Old Village. On Sun, Dec 13, swap Towne Centre for the Christmas Light Parade and do just one neighborhood afterward.

The Bottom Line

First time in Charleston at Christmas? Spend one evening walking the free downtown displays and save another for the Holiday Festival of Lights. Pick one part of the region per night instead of crossing the whole metro at once.
