Austin is one of the few big American cities where a Tuesday night can still end on a honky-tonk dance floor. Where you should go depends on the kind of dancing you're after. If you've never two-stepped, take a lesson at The White Horse, Sagebrush or Donn's Depot and stay for the band. If you'd rather dance without a partner or steps to learn, head to Barbarella, Africa Night at Sahara Lounge or the clubs on West 4th Street.

This guide covers Austin's best honky-tonks, live-band rooms, queer dance parties and a Saturday salsa night, plus three bigger country dance halls just outside the city. A few of these places are dance spots every night; others earn their place on one specific night, and we say which.

Two-Stepping or Line Dancing?

They're different nights out. Two-stepping is partner dancing, and most Austin honky-tonks are built around it; Broken Spoke bans every line dance except the Cotton-Eyed Joe. For line dancing, go to Mavericks North on a Tuesday, Wild West on Thursday or Saturday, or one of Neon Rainbows' BRONCO line-dance nights at Sagebrush.

Austin Honky-Tonks for Two-Stepping

These are the places where two-stepping is the main event. Five of the six teach lessons on set nights, so get there early, learn the basics and stay for the band.

The White Horse

The White Horse

500 Comal St, Austin, TX 78702

The East Side honky-tonk that got a younger crowd two-stepping again after it opened in 2011. There's live country every night, the floor fills early on weekends, and Beth Coffey's lesson is the easiest first step into Austin dancing. Go when: Thursday through Sunday at 7 p.m. for the donation-based lesson (cash or Venmo, no reservations). Cover starts at 7:30, usually $10 Thursday to Saturday and $5 on Sunday. Always 21 and up.

Sagebrush

Sagebrush

5500 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78745

From the team that co-founded the White Horse, Sagebrush has the room the White Horse doesn't: a big wood floor in a 1940s barracks building, a painted West Texas sunset along one wall and a large backyard. The extra space makes it the place to practice what you picked up in a lesson. Go when: Tuesday for Double or Nothing's beginner lesson at 6 p.m. (intermediate at 7), usually $10 cash at the door. Wednesday brings Hill Country Two Step's advanced (7 p.m.) and intermediate (8 p.m.) classes before the band, and Sunday's classes are advanced and intermediate. Neon Rainbows runs queer two-step and line-dance Mondays here on rotating dates.

Broken Spoke

Broken Spoke

3201 S Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78704

Open since 1964 and still run by the White family, this is the classic Texas dance hall, with a country band most nights and a floor that moves counterclockwise. Terri White's lessons are funny, no-nonsense and fill up fast. Go when: Wednesday through Saturday. Lessons run 8 to 9 p.m. for $10 on top of the door charge, so arrive by 7:30 to get in, and bring cash. Tuesday has a band but no lesson; it's closed Sunday and Monday.

Donn's Depot

Donn's Depot

1600 W 5th St, Austin, TX 78703

Built from an old train depot and three retired railcars, Donn's has been going since 1978, and Donn Adelman, hired as the piano player, still plays every week. It has two dance floors, older regulars who are happy to ask newcomers to dance, and a women's restroom inside a caboose. Go when: Wednesday. Double or Nothing's free beginner lesson starts at 7:30 p.m., there's no cover and the band starts at 8:30. You don't need a partner. Friday and Saturday carry a cover.

The Little Longhorn Saloon

The Little Longhorn Saloon

5434 Burnet Rd, Austin, TX 78756

A tiny steeple-topped honky-tonk that's been the Little Longhorn since 1963. Bands squeeze onto a corner stage six nights a week, the dance floor is cramped, and on Sundays from 4 to 8 p.m. the room belongs to Chicken Shit Bingo. Go when: Tuesday or Wednesday at 7 p.m. for Hill Country Two Step's lessons (beginner Tuesday, intermediate Wednesday; free, tips welcome), then stay for the 8 p.m. band. No cover, cash only. Closed Mondays.

Sam's Town Point

Sam's Town Point

2115 Allred Dr, Austin, TX 78748

A South Austin honky-tonk since the 1980s, now owned by Americana musician Ramsay Midwood, who still plays here regularly. Bands play nightly on two stages, one inside and one out on a patio strung with lights, and the floor is big enough to two-step properly. Go when: pick a country bill from the calendar and make it the whole night, since it's a long ride from downtown. There are no regular lessons here right now, so learn the basics somewhere else first.

The ABGB

1305 W Oltorf St, Austin, TX 78704

Go when: Sunday, 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday Best is free and all ages, and you're done in time for dinner.

The Highball

The Highball

1120 S Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78704

The Alamo Drafthouse's bar and event space on South Lamar hosts Native Texan Two Step nights, a lesson followed by a live country band. Neon Rainbows' STAMPEDE queer line-dance parties land here on select Fridays. Go when: Thursday (and some Sundays) for Native Texan nights. Buy tickets ahead on Eventbrite; the lesson starts at 7 and the band at 8. Lessons are often intermediate, so learn the basics elsewhere first. 21+.

Africa Night, Reggae and Salsa

For a dance night with no country music and nothing to learn, these three are the picks.

Sahara Lounge

Sahara Lounge

1413 Webberville Rd, Austin, TX 78721

A far East Side dive and music venue whose Saturday Africa Night is one of Austin's great dance nights. A free buffet comes out at 7 p.m., then live Afrobeat, reggae and Afro-Latin bands play late, with house band Zoumountchi closing the night. Nobody here is watching your footwork. Go when: Saturday, 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Get there early for the buffet, which runs until it's gone, and expect a modest cover that's cheaper in cash. Fridays often bring Latin and cumbia bands.

Flamingo Cantina

Flamingo Cantina

515 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701

Sixth Street's long-running reggae club, booking live reggae, ska and roots acts. The crowd comes for the band, which makes it a very different night from the bars around it. Go when: Wednesday for Dreadneck Wednesdays with the Mau Mau Chaplains, 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., $5 and 21+, with Jamaican food from Winston's Kitchen.

Gloria's Latin Cuisine at The Domain

3309 Esperanza Crossing, Suite 100, Austin, TX 78758

A Latin restaurant that turns into a salsa club once dinner service ends on Saturdays, with live Latin bands and a DJ playing until 2 a.m. It's the most dressed-up night in this guide. Go when: Saturday, 11 p.m. to 2 a.m., $10 cover. No lesson is included, so come knowing the basics. The dress code rules out sneakers, athletic wear, caps, baggy clothes, graphic tees and work boots.

Country Dance Halls Near Austin

Bigger rooms worth the drive when you want space, line dancing or a whole night in one place. Sort out the ride home before you go.

The first Tuesday of each month is beginner night.

Mavericks Dance Hall Buda

Mavericks Dance Hall Buda

275 Old San Antonio Rd, Buda, TX 78610

The south-side Mavericks opened in 2019, with George Strait playing a surprise set to break it in. It has a big wood floor, five bars and a patio, and it's the easier drive of the two if you're staying south of downtown. Go when: Wednesday to Saturday from 7 p.m., with patio DJs Thursday through Saturday. Lessons aren't on a fixed schedule, so check the calendar. 21+.

Wild West

Wild West

401 E Whitestone Blvd, Cedar Park, TX 78613

A large suburban country club that splits its week by style, so you can choose a two-step night, a line-dance night or a Latin night instead of hoping one bar covers everything. What to Know Before You Go Dancing in Austin

Go early. Lessons start between 6 and 8 p.m. If you turn up at 11, you've missed the easiest way in.

Bring cash. Broken Spoke, Sagebrush, the Little Longhorn and the Continental's day-of covers all run on it.

Learn the floor. Two-steppers travel counterclockwise around the room, with faster couples on the outside. Ask before taking someone's hand, take a no gracefully, and wear shoes you can turn in, since sneakers grip and new boots hurt.

Plan the ride home. Sam's Town Point, Sagebrush and the three dance halls aren't anywhere near downtown, so pick one place and give it the whole night.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I try two-stepping for the first time in Austin?
The White Horse (Thursday to Sunday at 7 p.m.), Donn's Depot (Wednesday at 7:30, free) and Sagebrush (Tuesday at 6) all run beginner lessons before the band. The Little Longhorn's free Tuesday class is the smallest and most low-key. Pick whichever night fits your trip.
Do I need a partner?
No. The group lessons at Donn's Depot, Sagebrush and the Neon Rainbows nights rotate partners, so plenty of people come alone or with friends.
Where can I go line dancing in Austin?
Mavericks North on Tuesdays, Wild West on Thursdays and Saturdays, and Neon Rainbows' BRONCO nights at Sagebrush and STAMPEDE parties at The Highball. Skip Broken Spoke for this; it doesn't allow line dancing beyond the Cotton-Eyed Joe.
Where can I dance in Austin without country music?
Barbarella and the clubs around West 4th Street for DJs, Sahara Lounge's Saturday Africa Night for live bands, Elysium for goth and '80s, and Gloria's at The Domain for Saturday salsa.
Is there anywhere for people under 21?
The ABGB's Sunday Best is free and all ages. Wild West is 18+ on Wednesdays and runs a Saturday teen night for ages 13 to 17, and Oilcan Harry's is 18+ most nights after 8. Almost everywhere else in this guide is 21 and up.
