Illinois nightlife has a clear split. Green Street in
Campustown is the undergraduate scene, loud and packed and built around game

Best Hotels Near Campus
Only two hotels put you inside campus itself: the Illini
Union Hotel, which is literally on the Main Quad, and TownePlace Suites in
Campustown. Everything else clusters in downtown Champaign, downtown Urbana, or
along South Neil Street, all within a short drive. Champaign-Urbana is a small
market, so Homecoming, Dads Weekend, Moms Weekend, move-in, and graduation all
sell out well ahead. Book refundable and book early.

Alma Mater

The bronze figure with her arms out, made by Illinois alum Lorado Taft and unveiled on Alumni Day in 1929. She stood south of Foellinger until 1962, when she moved to the Wright and Green corner where every graduation photo now gets taken.
Main Quad

The long green heart of campus, laid out on a north-south axis in the early 1900s and framed by the historic academic buildings. The Illini Union anchors the north end and Foellinger Auditorium the south, and on a warm afternoon it’s the clearest picture you’ll get of what student life here actually looks like.
University of Illinois Gies Memorial Stadium

Home of Fighting Illini football since 1923 and a genuine war memorial: the 200 columns along the east and west sides carry the names of Illinois students and alumni who died in World War I. It seats 60,670 on Zuppke Field, took the Gies name in 2025 after a $100 million alumni gift, and is where Red Grange scored six touchdowns against Michigan at the 1924 dedication.
Foellinger Auditorium

The domed rotunda closing the south end of the Quad, dedicated in 1907 and designed by alum Clarence Blackall. It still runs as a lecture hall and performance space, and the copper dome with the pineapple on top came from a 1980s alumni gift.
Altgeld Hall

The 1890s sandstone castle that started life as the university library and later housed the math department, home to the Altgeld Chimes since 1920. Worth walking past for the tower alone, but note that Altgeld is closed for a long-running renovation, the interior phase hasn’t started, and the chimes have not resumed regular concerts. Exterior viewing only for now.
Illini Union
1401 W Green St, Urbana, IL 61801, USA
The student union at the head of the Quad, open since 1941 and modeled on Colonial Williamsburg. Inside are lounges, dining, the bookstore, a 14-lane bowling alley in the Rec Room, and the Illini Union Hotel upstairs. If you only walk into one building on campus, make it this one.
