UAB Guide: Where to Eat, Drink & Stay in Birmingham (2026)

Whether you're a UAB student working out where to eat that isn't the Dining Commons, a parent driving up for move-in, an alum back for Homecoming, a family in town because someone is being treated at UAB Hospital, or a prospective student fitting a campus tour around one good dinner, this guide covers the restaurants, bars, cafes, hotels and campus landmarks worth knowing around the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Three things shape almost every plan you'll make here.

UAB is a city campus wrapped around a hospital, and that changes who's visiting. The university spreads across roughly 636 acres and more than a hundred city blocks of Birmingham's Southside, and it divides into two halves that flow into each other rather than sitting apart. The academic core runs roughly between 12th and 17th Streets South along University Boulevard, with the Campus Green, the Hill Student Center and Sterne Library in the middle of it. The medical district picks up east of about 18th Street South: UAB Hospital, the Kirklin Clinic, Children's of Alabama, the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and Callahan Eye, most of them linked by second-floor concourses and covered crosswalks. UAB Hospital became the fifth-largest hospital in the country in 2026 at around 1,400 beds, and UAB together with UAB Medicine is the largest employer in Alabama. The practical upshot is that "visiting UAB" means very different trips for different people, and half this guide is written for the visitor nobody else writes for: the one who's here for a week because a family member is in treatment.

The good stuff is close, but very little of it is on campus. This is not a college town with one main street. Five Points South is the nearest real district, about half a mile southeast at 20th Street South and 11th Avenue South, and it's a ten to twelve minute walk. Parkside, meaning Railroad Park and Regions Field, is a similar walk north across the railroad. Beyond that you're driving or taking a short ride: Lakeview is a mile and a bit east, Pepper Place about a mile and a half northeast, Avondale closer to three miles, and Homewood is three miles south but on the other side of Red Mountain, which is a ridge, not a road. Nothing in this guide is far. Plenty of it is further than it looks.

Football is downtown, and the fall calendar is denser than you'd expect. UAB plays at Protective Stadium at the BJCC, roughly two miles north of campus and not on it. The dates that matter in 2026: move-in ran August 19 to 23, classes started August 24, Family Weekend is October 2 to 4, and Homecoming week is October 12 to 15 with the game against East Carolina on a Thursday night, not a Saturday, because of the TV window. December commencement runs December 9 to 12 at Bartow Arena and the Alys Stephens Center. See the hotels section for the three weekends when Birmingham runs out of rooms.

Birmingham is a better food city than most people outside Alabama expect, and it has been since Frank Stitt opened Highlands Bar and Grill in 1982. Highlands itself has been closed since March 2020 and Stitt has said it's unlikely to return in the form people remember, so don't go looking for it, but the generation of restaurants that followed it is the reason a campus with 20,000-odd students has this much good eating inside two miles.

The problem with a UAB guide is that the famous restaurants and the student restaurants are not the same restaurants, and most lists only give you the first kind.

The walkable everyday map is Five Points South and the blocks just south of campus. Jim 'N Nick's, Surin West, The Original Pancake House and Chez Fonfon are all on or near 11th Avenue South, ten minutes on foot. The Fish Market is on 22nd Street South. Al's Deli sits in the middle of the hospital district on 10th Avenue South and is the closest thing UAB has to a proper lunch counter. Dreamland is south on 14th Avenue. None of these need a reservation and most of them are under twenty dollars.

Pepper Place, about a mile and a half northeast, is where the grown-up dinners are. Hot and Hot Fish Club, Bettola and Blueprint on 3rd are within a block of each other on 2nd and 3rd Avenues South, with Automatic Seafood a few blocks west. That's the cluster to aim at when parents are paying.

Downtown, along 1st and 2nd Avenues North, is the other dinner option and the one to pick if the trip is as much about Birmingham as about campus.

Two scheduling traps worth knowing before you build a day around anything: Chez Fonfon is closed Sunday and Monday, The Fish Market is closed Sunday, and The Original Pancake House shuts at 2pm every day. On a three-day graduation trip that removes more of the map than you'd think.

The honest version first: UAB does not have a strip of student bars at its gates. It's a commuter-heavy urban university with a large graduate and health-professions population, and the drinking happens in the city's districts rather than in a campus bubble.

What Birmingham gives you instead is four distinct scenes, none more than fifteen minutes away.

Five Points South, ten minutes' walk southeast, is the closest and the most student-adjacent. The Nick is here, and it is an institution.

Parkside, ten minutes north across the railroad, is Good People Brewing next to Regions Field, which is as easy as group drinks get.

Downtown, on 1st and 2nd Avenues North, is where the cocktails are. Collins Bar and Cayo Coco are both about a mile north.

Avondale, three miles east on 41st Street South, is the night out that's worth the car. Avondale Brewing and Saturn are two doors apart, which makes it the one district where you can park once and stay put.

On game days: UAB plays in the American Conference, which rebranded from the American Athletic Conference in 2025, having moved up from Conference USA in 2021. The rivalry to know is the Battle for the Bones against Memphis, played for a hundred-pound bronze rack of ribs, a trophy that references both cities' barbecue. In 2026 that game is in Memphis. The home dates that will fill bars are Navy on Friday, September 25 and East Carolina on Thursday, October 15, both primetime on ESPN.

Two things to know before you plan around coffee here.

The first is that the old answer is gone. Lucy's Coffee & Tea, the UAB coffee shop for 27 years, closed in 2020 and still ranks well in search. If an older alum tells you to meet at Lucy's, that's why.

The second is that these five do different jobs. Bandido and FILTER are the walk-from-campus study options. Red Cat is the early-morning one, open from 6:30am, which makes it the right first stop before a 9am campus tour. Frothy Monkey is the one that also does an actual meal. Whammy is the one to go to if you care about coffee for its own sake.

Worth knowing separately: Red Cat also runs a counter inside UAB Hospital-Highlands on 11th Avenue South, and there's a Starbucks in the Hill Student Center and another on the second floor of the hospital's North Pavilion. If you're spending days in the medical district, those are your options rather than these.

For a campus visit, move-in, Family Weekend or commencement, stay in the 20th Street South corridor. The Hilton, the Courtyard, Hotel Indigo and the Residence Inn are all within a ten minute walk of the academic core, and they are the first four things in Birmingham to go when dates get announced.

For a medical center stay, book the same corridor but think in weeks, not nights. The Residence Inn's kitchen suites are the right call for anything longer than a weekend. Worth knowing that UAB Medicine has discounted patient rates at the Courtyard and the Hilton, arranged through Guest Services rather than the booking site, so call rather than clicking. Families of cancer patients should ask their care team about the American Cancer Society's Joe Lee Griffin Hope Lodge on Ireland Way, which is free with a referral, and families of children being treated at Children's of Alabama about the Ronald McDonald House at 1700 4th Avenue South, one block from the hospital and also referral-based.

For a trip that's as much about Birmingham as about campus, go downtown to the Elyton or the Redmont, or south over the mountain to the Valley Hotel in Homewood. All three are drives or long walks, and all three are better hotels for it.

The dates to book early for. Move-in ran August 19 to 23, 2026, and classes began August 24. Family Weekend is October 2 to 4, 2026, with football against Samford on the Saturday. Homecoming week is October 12 to 15, with the game against East Carolina on the Thursday evening. December commencement runs December 9 to 12, 2026, with most ceremonies at Bartow Arena and doctoral hooding at the Alys Stephens Center. Spring 2027 dates weren't published when this guide went up; spring 2026 ran late April into the first weekend of May, so plan on that window.

Three collisions worth knowing about, because they're the kind of thing you discover once. Move-in week runs straight into the Sidewalk Film Festival, held August 24 to 30 in the downtown theatre district, about a mile from campus. The weekend before Homecoming week is the worst of the year: the Barber Vintage Festival and Furnace Fest both run October 9 to 11, 2026, so rooms are tight from that Friday through the Thursday Homecoming game. And the Magic City Classic, on October 31, 2026 at Legion Field, is the single biggest hotel-demand event in Birmingham. UAB is away that weekend, so it won't stack with a home game, but the city will still be full.

UAB is an open urban campus rather than a gated one, and most of what's worth seeing you can simply walk into. The academic core is compact and pleasant on foot; the medical district next to it is dense and high-rise and reads as a different place entirely, which is accurate, because it is.

Two pieces of local vocabulary save confusion. University Boulevard is the old 8th Avenue South, renamed in 1981, so older maps and directions may use either. And 21st Street South is signed as Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard, which trips up more visitors than it should.

Four of the nine below are city landmarks rather than campus ones. Railroad Park, Vulcan and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute are included because a visitor with a free afternoon should go to them, and Protective Stadium is here because that's where the football is, whatever the campus map suggests.
