Athens sits about 75 miles southeast of Columbus in the Appalachian foothills, and the thing to understand before you plan anything is how small it is. The city's population is roughly 25,000 and the Athens campus enrolls about 23,000 students, so town and university are close to the same size, and the university is the town in a way that isn't true at most big public schools. Chartered in 1804, Ohio University was the first university in the Northwest Territory and is the oldest in the state. Court Street runs straight into College Green, which means uptown Athens and the historic heart of campus are the same few blocks. That's the good news. The less good news is that there are only a handful of hotels in town, so book early for anything that draws a crowd.
