Florida International University Guide: Where to Eat, Drink & Stay (2026)

Whether you're an FIU student trying to work out where to eat between a 2pm and a 6pm class, a parent flying in for move-in or Commencement, an alum back for Homecoming, or a prospective student walking the campus for the first time, this guide covers the restaurants, bars, cafes, hotels and campus landmarks worth knowing around Florida International University.

One thing to understand before you plan anything. FIU is a commuter school of more than 54,000 students, and the Maidique campus sits in West Miami-Dade on SW 8th Street, which is Tamiami Trail, a wide arterial rather than a college main street. There is no bar row at the gates. What there is instead is a genuinely good strip of student food a five-minute walk off the east edge of campus on SW 107th and 109th Avenue, the Nicaraguan neighbourhood of Sweetwater immediately north and west, the Cuban institutions running east along SW 8th Street and Bird Road, and the Doral and Dolphin Mall hotel cluster to the north where almost every visiting family ends up. This guide runs outward from campus in roughly that order, because that is how visiting here actually works. Leave buffer for traffic: a three-mile trip in Miami is not a five-minute trip.

Start with the walk. The block of SW 107th and 109th Avenue on the east edge of campus is the only part of this map you can reach on foot, and FIU's own student journalists write about it constantly. Past that it's a car or a rideshare, and the map splits three ways: Sweetwater to the north and west, which is the heart of Nicaraguan Miami and the most interesting eating anywhere near FIU; SW 8th Street and Bird Road heading east, where the Cuban institutions are; and the Westchester and Tamiami restaurants further out that families use for a proper sit-down dinner. The list below runs from campus outward.

Be realistic about this one. FIU is overwhelmingly a commuter school, and there is no student bar strip anywhere near the Maidique campus. The closest thing to a walk-to bar is Sushi Sake's 3pm happy hour, which is why it sits in the restaurants section above. What exists instead is a good sports bar seven minutes out on SW 40th, a Bird Road cluster of cocktail bars and small breweries about ten minutes east, a bowling alley that answers the "what do we actually do tonight" question better than any of them, and the CityPlace Doral venues north of campus near the hotels. Beyond that, students disperse to Coral Gables, Brickell and Wynwood, twenty to thirty minutes east. Tailgating at Pitbull Stadium is the real on-campus social scene, and no bar in this section competes with it on a Saturday in November.

Two of the most useful coffee stops are on campus and one is a genuine local institution a few minutes off it. Between classes, the Graham Center cafecito counter is the busiest few square feet on the Maidique campus. For a real study session, specialTEA on Coral Way is the off-campus room students actually sit in, and it's open late on weekdays. Hours on campus shrink over academic breaks, so check FIU's live dining pages rather than assuming normal chain hours.

There is no hotel walkable to FIU and no hotel on campus. The cluster everyone uses is seven to fifteen minutes north around Doral and Dolphin Mall, which has the twin advantages of being close to Miami International Airport and being connected to campus on weekdays by the free Sweetwater Trolley. That is the practical choice for a tour, a move-in or a game weekend. The alternative worth knowing about is Coral Gables, twenty minutes east, which is a much nicer place to spend an evening and makes sense if the trip is half campus visit and half Miami weekend. Commencement runs across a full week each December and May rather than a single day, which spreads hotel demand more than at most schools, but Family Weekend in late September concentrates it.

The Maidique campus covers 342 acres and was built on the site of the old Tamiami Airport, which is why the preserved control tower still stands on it. It is walkable end to end, with a free internal Panther Mover shuttle if you'd rather not. Visitor parking runs through the Blue, Gold and Panther garages and Lots 3 and 4, paid by PayByPhone app or kiosk at 25 cents per 15 minutes, so a dollar an hour. The route below runs from the centre of campus out to the athletics end.
