Elon University Guide: Best Restaurants, Bars & Hotels (2026)

Whether you're an Elon student still working out your regular spots, a first-year learning the town, a parent in for move-in or Family Weekend, an alum back for Homecoming, or a prospective student seeing the place for the first time, this guide covers the restaurants, bars, cafes, hotels and campus landmarks worth knowing around Elon.

The first thing to get straight is the geography, because almost everyone books the wrong thing at least once. Elon University is not in Burlington. It's in the Town of Elon, a separate municipality of about 11,000 people in Alamance County, and the campus runs right into a small downtown you can walk to from the quad. That downtown is genuinely compact: two or three blocks on Lebanon Avenue, Haggard Avenue and Williamson Avenue, holding most of the places students use daily. Burlington is about ten minutes east and holds the hotels, the chains and the older local institutions. Graham, the county seat, is another five minutes on and has the prettiest square in the county. Nothing outside downtown Elon is walkable, and the practical answer for most visits is a car.

The second thing worth knowing is that the university's whole identity runs through a stand of oak trees. The founders picked a railroad stop called Mill Point in 1888 because the site was covered in them, and named the college Elon, from the Hebrew word for oak. Then on 18 January 1923 a fire destroyed the Main Building and most of the college's records with it, and Elon rebuilt around the same quad over the next two years. That's why the mascot is a Phoenix, adopted in 2000 to replace the Fightin' Christians, and why new students are handed an acorn Under the Oaks at Convocation and collect an oak sapling in the same spot at Baccalaureate four years later. The campus is now about 700 acres, designated a botanical garden since 2004, with roughly 6,200 undergraduates.

Elon's eating map has three rings and they serve completely different purposes. Downtown Elon, a few minutes' walk from the quad, is where students eat most days: two restaurants from the same pair of alumni, a pizza place with named farms behind its toppings, a diner in a converted fast-food building, and a Chapel Hill deli that opened an outpost here. Burlington, ten minutes east, is where the older institutions and the family dinners live, plus the drive-thru that wins the students' late-night vote every single year. And then there's one outlier ten minutes west in Gibsonville that answers the question every Elon parent eventually asks, which is where to eat on graduation night.

One warning that catches families out constantly, so it's worth saying up front: a lot of downtown Elon closes on Sundays. The Root, TANGENT, Skid's and Prego's are all shut. Plan accordingly.

Elon's drinking geography is short and easy to learn, which is unusual and mostly a good thing. Two of the four places students actually use are on Haggard Avenue within a walk of campus, one is a plaza bar just north, and one is the Philadelphia pub on Lebanon. Beyond that you're driving: downtown Burlington has a co-operatively owned brewery that's worth the ten minutes, and there's a Bavarian beer garden out past Whitsett for people who care about lager. There is no stadium bar strip at Rhodes, so game days spread across town rather than concentrating anywhere.

This is a short section and it's dominated by one place. The Oak House is the default meeting point in Elon and wins both the coffee and the tea vote in the student poll most years, and it changes character completely after dark. Beyond it, the sweet stop downtown is a small ice-cream counter that Elon's own admissions office sends visiting families to, and the best breakfast in the area is a fifteen-minute drive away on the Graham courthouse square. On campus there are two more options a visitor can use mid-tour, the Acorn Coffee Shop inside Belk Library and Irazú in Moseley Center, both covered in the campus landmarks section below.

The honest hierarchy here is short. The Inn at Elon is the only hotel on campus and it is the one everybody wants, so it goes first on Family Weekend, Homecoming and Commencement. After that, the surprise is that the closest alternative isn't in Burlington at all: the Burke Manor Inn in Gibsonville is a short drive from campus, closer than the interstate hotels, and it has the best restaurant in the area downstairs. Everything else is the I-40/85 corridor in west Burlington, ten minutes out, where the trade-offs are the familiar ones of breakfast, suites and parking. Several of those properties carry a negotiated Elon University rate, so ask for it by name when you book. There is no hotel in downtown Burlington or downtown Graham, so a walkable downtown stay isn't an option here.

Book early. Move-in is Friday 21 August 2026, Family Weekend is 25 to 27 September, and Homecoming and Reunion Weekend is 9 to 10 October, and those three weekends take the local supply out.

The campus was designated a botanical garden in 2004 and is an ArbNet Level II accredited arboretum with more than 5,800 trees, which is genuinely unusual and almost nobody outside the university knows about it. The Trees of Elon Trail runs past 125 marked trees over about 1.25 miles and takes roughly ninety minutes. The visitor-facing part of campus is compact and walkable in an hour. Start at Moseley Center to get oriented, walk the historic quad the university rebuilt after the 1923 fire, cross Scott Plaza past the fountain, and finish either at the lake or up at Schar Center depending on whether the visit is about atmosphere or athletics.

The one stop that isn't a building is Under the Oaks, the founding oak grove the university takes its name from. New students are given an acorn there at Convocation in August and graduating seniors collect an oak sapling in the same place at Baccalaureate in May. Worth knowing that Commencement itself has moved indoors to Schar Center, so if someone tells you Elon graduates under the oak trees, that's Baccalaureate they're describing.
