Wedding dress shopping in New York can be overwhelming because there are so many options. You can try dozens of designers under one roof at a traditional bridal salon, make an appointment directly at a designer's NYC flagship, hunt for something vintage, or do some combination of all three.

This guide includes our favorite places to shop for a wedding dress in NYC, organized by the type of appointment. If you have no idea what you want yet, start with the multi-designer boutiques. Once you know the silhouettes and designers you like, add one or two flagships that fit your style.

And don't try to visit eight stores in a day. Three appointments is plenty.

How to plan a wedding dress shopping day in NYC

The biggest mistake is treating NYC bridal shopping like normal shopping. Most bridal boutiques require appointments, appointments can run for an hour or more, and some salons charge appointment fees.

For your first day, book two or three stores with different points of view. If you don't know what you like yet, make at least one of them a multi-designer salon. You'll learn much more from trying on ten different silhouettes than from booking three flagships for designers whose dresses you've only seen online.

Try to group appointments geographically, too. SoHo is particularly easy for a bridal day because you can hit several designer flagships without spending half the day in a cab. Midtown and the Garment District have another big concentration.

Bring the people whose opinions you actually want. More people does not necessarily make the experience better, and some boutiques limit the number of guests you can bring.

Finally: appointment policies change. Check the current fee, cancellation policy and guest limit directly with the boutique before booking.

Best Multi-Designer Bridal Shops in NYC

If you're at the beginning of your search, start here. Multi-designer boutiques let you compare silhouettes, fabrics, designers and price points in one appointment instead of committing to a single fashion house.

Three NYC Wedding Dress Shopping Itineraries

If you want to make a full day of it, group appointments rather than zig-zagging across Manhattan.

SoHo fashion bride

Start with Amsale, then do Galia Lahav, Sarah Seven or Alexandra Grecco, and finish at Happy Isles if you want to throw vintage into the mix.

Uptown luxury bride

Start at Mark Ingram, then choose one or two designer appointments from Vera Wang, Monique Lhuillier, Anne Barge or Oscar de la Renta.

First-time shopping day

Start at a multi-designer boutique like Wedding Atelier, Jaxon James, Spina Bride or Viero. Your goal isn't necessarily to buy the dress that day. It's to figure out what you actually like on your body before you start booking specific designers.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start wedding dress shopping in NYC?
If you don't already have a specific designer in mind, start at a multi-designer bridal salon. Mark Ingram, Jaxon James, Spina Bride, Wedding Atelier, Lovely Bride and Kleinfeld all let you compare multiple designers during one appointment. Once you know that you consistently like a certain silhouette or designer, book the relevant flagship.
How many wedding dress appointments should I book in one day?
Two or three is ideal. Bridal appointments take time, and after a few hours of trying on white dresses, they can all start to blend together. Three thoughtfully chosen appointments will usually teach you more than trying to squeeze in five or six.
Do NYC bridal shops charge appointment fees?
Some do and some don't. Based on our latest research, boutiques in this guide range from free standard appointments to fees of $150 or more for certain designers and appointment types. Policies can also differ between weekday, weekend and premium appointments, so always check before booking.
What should I bring wedding dress shopping?
Wear seamless nude underwear and bring any shapewear you already know you'll want to wear. You don't need the exact wedding shoes yet, but knowing roughly what heel height you expect can help. More importantly, bring a small group of people whose opinions you actually trust.
How far in advance should I shop for my wedding dress?
Starting roughly a year before the wedding gives you plenty of flexibility for ordering, production and alterations. You can absolutely shop later, but your options may depend more heavily on each designer's production timeline and rush availability.
What's the best neighborhood for wedding dress shopping in NYC?
SoHo is probably the easiest neighborhood for designer flagships. Amsale, Galia Lahav, Sarah Seven, Alexandra Grecco, Berta and several other bridal designers are concentrated downtown. For multi-designer salons and additional flagships, Chelsea, NoMad, Midtown and the Garment District have another large cluster.
Is Kleinfeld worth going to?
If you want the iconic NYC bridal experience or a huge selection of designers, yes. If you know you prefer intimate, quiet appointments, one of NYC's smaller ateliers may be a better fit. There's no reason you can't do both.
Where can I find vintage wedding dresses in NYC?
Start with Happy Isles, Allegra Vintij Bridal, Studio Dorothy and Cha Cha Linda Vintage. Vintage inventory changes constantly, so it's worth contacting shops before visiting if you're looking for a particular era, silhouette or size.
