Canada had its Thanksgiving on October 12, but you don't have to skip the American one on Thursday, November 26. Toronto won't be shut down for it, so the trick is knowing who's actually doing something that day. A few places are, and this year there's a very good reason to be in a bar by 8:20 p.m.: the Bills host the Chiefs on Thanksgiving night.

For the easiest turkey dinner, start with Hemingway's in Yorkville. For turkey and football with friends, book Saint John's Tavern. For Chiefs-Bills, Real Sports is the first call. And if you'd rather stay in, Afro Feast will bring a Ghanaian Friendsgiving spread to your door.

Every American Thanksgiving Option in Toronto

A turkey dinner, a football night and a Friendsgiving at home are three different plans, so start with the one you want.

Where to Get a Turkey Dinner on American Thanksgiving

Two of these are set for November 26. The other three are worth a quick call, because their American Thanksgiving plans hadn't been posted when we checked.

Hemingway's

Hemingway's

142 Cumberland St, Toronto, ON M5R 1A8, Canada

It takes a New Zealand-run pub to make American Thanksgiving this easy. Hemingway's has been serving this dinner for years, and at C$25 for turkey, all the fixings and a slice of pumpkin pie, it's the simplest plan in the city for a couple, a few friends or anyone on their own. Details: Served 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. while supplies last, so go early rather than late. The pub has 20 TVs, but live music runs 8 to 11 p.m., so ask about sound if you're staying for Chiefs-Bills.

Saint John's Tavern

Saint John's Tavern

117 John St, Toronto, ON M5V 2E2, Canada

This is the one for friends who care about the game as much as the turkey. The three-floor pub puts football on every screen from 4 p.m., and for C$25 you can add a turkey dinner with the fixings, an Everyside beer and a Fireball shot. There's a vegan option too, which helps if your group doesn't all eat the same way. Details: Book the American Thanksgiving experience, not a regular table, for parties of up to eight. A 20% gratuity goes on every bill that day.

Allen's

Allen's

143 Danforth Ave, Toronto, ON M4K 1N2, Canada

Allen's has run an annual American Thanksgiving dinner for decades, which makes it the closest thing Toronto has to a tradition. It's a dinner-first choice near Broadview station, with a serious whisky list and a dining room built around Ontario farms. Call for this year's menu, price and seating times.

The Blake House

The Blake House

449 Jarvis St, Toronto, ON M4Y 2G8, Canada

Dinner in an 1891 Jarvis Street mansion beats a pub booth if you want the day to feel like an occasion. The Blake House served American Thanksgiving last year, so call to see what's planned for November 26 and whether takeout is on offer.

STK Toronto

STK Toronto

153 Yorkville Ave, Toronto, ON M5R 0B4, Canada

STK is running a turkey dinner this November, but it's listed for participating US locations, so call before you plan around it. If Toronto's in, this is the dressy option: a DJ-driven steakhouse where half the table can have turkey and the other half steak. It opens at 3 p.m.

Where to Watch the NFL on Thanksgiving in Toronto

The night game is the big one here. Canada is the Bills' biggest fan base outside the US, and Buffalo hosts the Chiefs at 8:20 p.m. Neither the Leafs nor the Raptors play at home that night, so the bars by the arena won't be fighting a game crowd.

GameKickoff (Toronto time)
Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions1 p.m.
Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys4:30 p.m.
Kansas City Chiefs at Buffalo Bills8:20 p.m.
Real Sports

Real Sports

15 York St, Toronto, ON M5J 2Z2, Canada

Real Sports is where Toronto's Bills fans gather, and the bar is the team's official watch party destination. If Chiefs-Bills is the whole point of your night, this is the first call: a 39-foot screen, a short walk from Union Station, and a room full of people who care how it ends. Details: Bookings open three weeks out, so reserve now. Seat requests aren't guaranteed and bar stools are first come, first served. Parties of eight or more get one bill with 18% gratuity, and groups of 12 or more use the catering inquiry form.

Gibbons Irish Pub

Gibbons Irish Pub

26 Duncan St, Toronto, ON M5V 2B8, Canada

Gibbons is the adults-only football party, starting at 8 p.m. in time for Chiefs-Bills. Tickets run from free to C$35 plus fees, depending on the category. No turkey here, so eat first or order off the pub menu. Details: Ages 19 and over. Check what your ticket includes.

The Loose Moose

The Loose Moose

146 Front St W, Toronto, ON M5J 1G2, Canada

The Moose has been pouring since 1989 and has one of the biggest draught lists downtown, plus five 80-inch screens around the bar. It's also hosted Bills watch parties, including a Chiefs game, so you won't be alone in your Josh Allen jersey. Five minutes from Union, it's an easy place to settle in with wings and a group. Details: Ask for a screen-facing table and book the Moose itself, not the Antler Room downstairs.

Score on King

Score on King

107 King St E, Toronto, ON M5C 1G6, Canada

Score is the fun one, with 15 TVs, good wings and Caesars piled high with food. It's better for a loose afternoon with friends than for hanging on every snap of a big game. Details: Confirm your game and the sound when you book. Groups of seven or more go through the events inquiry.

Friendsgiving and Thanksgiving at Home

You don't need a whole bird to host. One of these is a shared feast that skips the turkey altogether, and the other is worth a call if you want the traditional plate at your own table.

Afro Feast

Afro Feast

181 Parliament St, Toronto, ON M5A 2Z4, Canada

For a Friendsgiving that goes beyond turkey, this Ghanaian kitchen does a party set built for passing around: jollof, 24 wings, kelewele and okro soup for C$299, enough for about 8 to 10 people. A C$599 set feeds about 18 to 20. Details: Delivery and catering only, no walk-ins. Order direct at 437-453-5210 by Sunday, November 22, with a C$150 minimum and a 50% deposit. Delivery in the Toronto core is C$12–15, free over C$400.

Summerhill Market

Summerhill Market

446 Summerhill Ave, Toronto, ON M4W 2E4, Canada

Summerhill's holiday dinners are sold by the serving and packed family-style for reheating, which suits a small table better than buying a whole bird. Call the Rosedale store to see if it's doing a turkey dinner for November 26, and how much notice it needs.

Tips for American Thanksgiving in Toronto

  • Book the holiday offer by name. A regular table isn't always the same as the Thanksgiving package.
  • Go early for turkey. Hemingway's sells it while supplies last, and a late arrival is how you end up with a burger.
  • Ask how long the table is yours. A three-game day is a lot to ask of one reservation.

Frequently asked questions

Is Toronto open on American Thanksgiving?
Yes. November 26 is a regular Thursday in Toronto, since Canada's Thanksgiving was on October 12. Most restaurants and bars run as usual, and only a few do anything for the holiday.
Where can I watch the NFL Thanksgiving games in Toronto?
Real Sports is the first choice for Chiefs-Bills. Saint John's has football on from 4 p.m., and Gibbons runs a 19+ party from 8 p.m. All three games are on Thursday, November 26, at 1 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 8:20 p.m.
Where should I go for American Thanksgiving on my own?
Hemingway's is the easy answer. It's a complete meal at a fair price, in a pub where nobody will think twice about a table for one.
Are there vegan or kid-friendly options?
Saint John's advertises a vegan option, so ask what it is when you book. For kids, skip Gibbons, which is 19+, and check age rules at any bar on a big game day.
