Frequently Asked Questions About Washington, DC Wedding Venues
Quick answers to common questions couples ask when comparing wedding venues in Washington, DC.
How much does a Washington, DC wedding venue cost?
Historic houses rent for about $2,000–$18,000 before catering (Patterson Mansion, the Arts Club, Josephine Butler Parks Center, Dumbarton House, Anderson House). Museums run from $15,000 at the International Spy Museum to $80,000 for the National Portrait Gallery's courtyard. The hotels set food-and-drink minimums from $37,000 at the Fairmont to $70,000 at the Four Seasons, and The Hay-Adams adds a $15,000 room rental to its $55,000 minimum. Expect a 21–25% service charge plus DC's 10% tax on food and drink.
Can we get married at a Smithsonian museum?
Yes, and DC is unusual for it. The National Portrait Gallery's Kogod Courtyard, the National Museum of American History's Flag Hall (from $20,000), the National Museum of the American Indian (a full-building evening buyout for $27,000–$32,500), the Hirshhorn and the Renwick Gallery all host weddings. Events are evening-only, after the galleries close, and use the museums' approved caterers.
When is the best time to get married in DC?
Spring (cherry-blossom season) and fall are peak. Josephine Butler Parks Center's Saturday drops from $9,400 in peak season to $6,500 off-season, Meridian International Center ranges from $18,000 in January–February to $25,000 in September–October, and Anderson House takes $1,000 off in January–March, July and November.
Can we bring our own caterer?
At several historic houses, yes: Josephine Butler Parks Center lets you choose your own vendors, Dumbarton House and Signal House work with outside caterers, and The LINE DC doesn't require its recommended list. Union Station uses Design Cuisine exclusively, the hotels cater in-house, and the museums, DAR and Meridian International Center require caterers from their approved lists.
Is there a curfew for DC weddings?
Often. Meridian International Center ends receptions by 11 PM because it's in a residential neighborhood, Anderson House runs weddings from 6 to 11 PM, and the National Portrait Gallery's events usually run 7–10 PM, with an extra hour at $10,000. All Souls Church ends evening events by 10 PM.
Which DC neighborhood should we choose?
Georgetown has Dumbarton House, the Four Seasons and the Fairmont. Dupont Circle and Embassy Row have Anderson House, Patterson Mansion and the O Museum. Downtown has The Hay-Adams, the Arts Club and the DAR, with the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall. Capitol Hill has Union Station and the Signal House rooftop, and Meridian Hill has Josephine Butler Parks Center and Meridian International Center.
How many guests can DC wedding venues hold?
Most of the historic houses seat 100–150. For large weddings, the National Portrait Gallery holds 800, the O Museum in The Mansion up to 650 for a reception, the Omni Shoreham and the National Museum of American History seat 350, and Union Station's East Hall seats 310. Anderson House welcomes weddings of under 50, and Patterson Mansion's library seats 30.
Do we need a wedding planner?
At some venues it's required: the DAR requires a professional planner, the International Spy Museum a day-of coordinator, and the National Museum of the American Indian a planner for at least the final 30 days. Elsewhere it's optional but recommended, especially at venues where you bring in your own caterer and rentals.
