Frequently Asked Questions About Boston Wedding Venues
Quick answers to common questions couples ask when comparing wedding venues in and around Boston.
How much does a Boston wedding venue cost?
North Shore and suburban estates usually charge $5,000–$15,000 for the venue in peak season (Willowdale, Turner Hill, Floriana, Elm Bank) plus catering around $130–$160 per person, while Castle Hill is $24,000–$30,000. Downtown hotels sell per-person packages of roughly $185–$386 with food-and-drink minimums of $45,000–$80,000. Landmark venues run higher still: the Boston Public Library's sample totals range from $62,800 to $177,800, and a Fenway Park wedding starts around $83,000. Most quotes add 20–26% in service and admin fees plus Massachusetts meals tax.
When is the best time to get married in Boston?
May through October is peak season, with September and October — fall foliage — the most in demand. Estates hold tented weddings from May to October and move indoors the rest of the year at much lower prices: Floriana's winter Saturdays are $3,000 against $9,500 in peak season, and Tupper Manor drops to $2,500 from January through April.
Should we marry in the city or on the North Shore?
In the city you get hotel ballrooms, museums, and landmarks within reach of guests' hotels — the Boston Public Library, the Museum of Science, the harborfront hotels. The North Shore (Ipswich, Topsfield, Beverly), about 30–45 minutes away, has historic estates with gardens, ocean views, and sailcloth tents, and the western suburbs (Lincoln, Wellesley) have deCordova and the Garden at Elm Bank. Out-of-town venues usually mean arranging shuttles from hotels.
Do Boston estates use tents?
Many do. From May to October, Willowdale, Floriana, Castle Hill, deCordova, and Turner Hill host dinner under a Sperry-style sailcloth tent, usually included in the rental, with a mansion, ballroom, or courtyard as the rain plan. From November to April these weddings move indoors and the guest count drops — Willowdale goes from 240 to 125.
Can we bring our own caterer?
Rarely. Many estates and hotels cater in-house (Willowdale, Floriana, Tupper Manor, and the hotels), Turner Hill requires its exclusive caterer and bar, deCordova requires one of seven preferred caterers, the Museum of Science works with MAX Ultimate Food, and Castle Hill uses Gourmet Hospitality. At SoWa Power Station all alcohol must come through the venue.
Where should our guests stay?
For a city wedding, the hotel venues — Raffles, Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, the Langham, Boston Harbor Hotel, and Fairmont Copley Plaza — put guests upstairs, and most include a suite for the couple. Tupper Manor in Beverly has a 91-room hotel on site. Other North Shore and suburban estates don't have rooms, so plan on a hotel block and shuttles.
How many guests can Boston wedding venues hold?
Estates usually top out at 220–250 under a tent in season, and downtown hotels at roughly 150–250. The Museum of Science holds 400 and the Boston Public Library 325 or more, and SoWa Power Station's 25,000 sq ft main floor can take far larger weddings.
What time do Boston weddings end?
Most venues sell a five- to six-hour event window. Floriana ends at 10:30 PM on Fridays and Saturdays and 10 PM on other nights, Castle Hill's events generally run 6–11:30 PM, and SoWa Power Station's full-day rental runs until midnight. Extra hours are often available — Turner Hill charges $1,250 per half hour.
